The key moment in the story was actually when he tried his first impersonation as a school teacher. That's when Frank Jr realized he had the power to psychologically CONTROL people and that he could pull off the mind game for much longer than he thought. It took the school a WEEK to catch onto the fact that a boy with no credentials had been teaching classes! I work at Canadian navel base Esquimalt. A couple of year ago I attended a retirement seminar at a training bldg. named after a Canadian Admiral. During the Korean War he had been the navigating officer on board a Canadian destroyer, HMCS Cayuga. Just before they deployed another crew member joined the ship, a doctor. Because destroyers don’t normally get their own doctor, nobody questioned it. He wasn’t a doctor, however, or even a Naval Officer, he was an imposter named Ferdinand Demara. While onboard, he managed to improvise successful major surgeries and fend off infection with generous amounts of penicillin. His most notable surgical practices were performed on some sixteen Korean combat injuries who were loaded onto the Cayuga. All eyes turned to Demara, the only "surgeon" on board, as it became obvious that several of the injured soldiers would require major surgery or certainly die. After ordering personnel to transport these variously injured patients into the ship's operating room and prep them for surgery, Demara disappeared to his room with a textbook on general surgery and proceeded to speed-read the various surgeries he was now forced to perform, including major chest surgery. None of the soldiers died as a result of Demara's surgeries. Apparently, the removal of a bullet from a wounded man ended up in Canadian newspapers. One person reading the reports was the mother of the real Joseph Cyr; her son at the time of "his" service in Korea was actually practising medicine in Grand Falls, New Brunswick. Tony Curtis, father of Jamie Lee Curtis, played him in the movie, The Great Imposter.
one little detail i love and shows carl's nervousness of trying to catch frank in that hotel is when he shows his badge to the cleaning lady, he shows her the wrong side.
Most FBI agents know that people really DON'T look very closely at a badge. I think that's the point. You could literally make a badge that says your name is Mickey Mouse and most people would accept it.
My Mom worked for our local county as an accountant, and used to go to yearly continual learning government finance seminars. One year in the mid-2000's, Frank Abagnale gave the keynote address.
There were 3 times where Carl realizes just how smart Frank really is: 1. When Frank gets around him in the hotel room as Barry Allen 2. When Frank points out it’s the teller who printed the date on the check 3. When Frank tells Carl he studied for two weeks and passed the bar.

Loved this film at the theater. It reminded me of a Tony Curtis film, loosely based on the life and exploits of Ferdinand Demara; The Great Imposter (Universal I.P., 1961).
The white-haired gentleman in the flat cap at 32:06 is the real Frank William Abagnale Jr. It's blurred in the video for copyright reasons, but that's him.
Inside Man with Denzel Washington is a fun one to watch if you haven’t already. Or a Sigourney Weaver film called Copycat, haven’t watched it in a while but enjoyed it a lot.
This is such a classic. Abagnale pulling it all off like that before 21 is something all right. And he knew his limitations, backing off when people's lives could become imperiled. Also like how the real Frank makes a cameo, ironically arresting himself in France.
Except the real Frank is nothing like what's depicted in the movie the only thing based on reality is that he's a con artists through and through which including coning people about his exploits.
Most people (not me) prefer happy endings. I LOVE Clint, but his movies almost always seem to end on a shit note. Even I gotta admit that. Million Dollar Baby was probably my least favorite despite all the love from critics. Saw it in the theater and never will again.
Gran Torino is so, SO overrated. People like to say they like it just because it deals with race. But there is nothing original about it at all. It’s a TV movie of the week.
This is an obscure one, but you might try Sneakers. It's really fun and a great film to watch unfold like this one, and it's got a stellar cast. Enjoyed this as always!

Oh wow legit didn’t know that! At least Amy got her big break a couple of years later and did some excellent films like The Fighter and Arrival, she was great in this though and it would have been a big boost to have co-starred with Leo even though it wasn’t till a couple of years later she came into her own as a performer!

If you liked this, I suggest looking into the show "White Collar". The show is, basically, the aftermath of this movie and shows how Frank (in the show his name is Neil) uses his ability and insight of counterfeit to catch other thieves. Really good show.

So hilarious to watch you twist and trun throughout this movie. -------- I think the parent were always searching for that fairy tale American life. -------- The great job, wife/ husband, community respect, the 3 bedroom house and the white picket fence. -------- Sadly some will go to unprecedented lengths to achieve that dream and that's where Frank got the lessons of life. -------- "The Yankees always win because they are wearing the pinstripes."
Any body that gets the opportunity should read the book. Particularly the part about his stay in foreign prisons. Makes US prisons seem like The Hilton.
I heard a long time ago that Auto Factories had hired ex-Grand Theft auto cons to help them design cars that were hard to steal, like the doors, the Ignitions, ect.
This movie is one of my all-time favorites! You guys seemed to enjoy it a lot too, so I'd like to recommend you a show. White Collar, a USA original, is a show that's kind of like the part of CMIYC we didn't get to see, the adventures of Frank and Hatternaty catching other criminals together. Different characters, but a very similar dynamic, filled with clever capers and tons of charm! I highly recommend it!
this is probably my favorite spielberg movie and i cant explain why. i like the characters of frank and carl, both played by wonderful actors. idk what it is but the movie has me hooked all the way through
As a classic movie buff, I've never gotten into Spielberg's choice of subjects and style. Probably my favorite as well for the way it's constructed and presented as more like the classics before Spielberg started changing the way movies looked and felt.
About your comment about remembering not much from the first time you watched it, I would like to say , in my opinion, you probably used to be a much more passive watcher than now , and now you're much more aware of directors, stories, actors etc.. so it expends your understanding and sensitivity about what makes a good movie.

one little detail i love and shows carl's nervousness of trying to catch frank in that hotel is when he shows his badge to the cleaning lady, he shows her the wrong side.
Most FBI agents know that people really DON'T look very closely at a badge. I think that's the point. You could literally make a badge that says your name is Mickey Mouse and most people would accept it.
@@davestang5454...i really think its just because he was nervous and showed her the wrong side for comedic effect.
My Mom worked for our local county as an accountant, and used to go to yearly continual learning government finance seminars. One year in the mid-2000's, Frank Abagnale gave the keynote address.
Alan C Logan investigated Frank and Frank's story is all fake .
Wonderful movie. I know dicaprio gets all the plaudits but hanks was incredible too
There were 3 times where Carl realizes just how smart Frank really is:
1. When Frank gets around him in the hotel room as Barry Allen
2. When Frank points out it’s the teller who printed the date on the check
3. When Frank tells Carl he studied for two weeks and passed the bar.
If you like detective movies, I recommed "cast a deadly spell" . It present 1948 Los Angeles with a brand new perspective . And it was starring Frederick Ward, aka Earl from Tremors 1&2 .
Yes! I love that movie, but it never gets any love.
this made my day such a great film that more people should watch
I saw this headline, presusumed TBR had probably already seen it, and knew instinctively that Samantha would love it. Fantastic job, guys!
I love the cut of Carl staring at the clock after he let’s Frank fly 😂
Great Reaction,as usual.I thought I had already Subscribed but I,defintely, have now.
At 69 in London,I am not a Film buff and have never seen Leo or Tom act(I know) but, like the rest of the cast and with SS directing, this was fantastic and though I have seen this film,at a friend's house,I still shed a tear when Frank comes back @ 10.10am....
THE most underrated Spielberg movie...Everything is perfect, the story, character, atmosphere, soundtrack, cinematography and recreation of the time period...Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio at their best ! It's pretty much one of the movie who really started to give more serious role to DiCaprio, before that movie there was the ok Gang of New York and The Beach were he still played pretty boy role...after Catch me if you can, you have The Aviator, the Departed, Blood Diamond, Bodie of Lies, Shutter Island and Inception...Crazy what a movie can do to a career !!
There are interviews with the real Frank Abagnale on RUclips. Fascinating guy.
Great job, as usual!
Unfortunately a lot of the stuff he claimed he has done turned out to be fake. So maybe not that fascinating after all.
@@Sandstroem1981 Yep. He was a small time con who cashed some fake checks, not even close to the amount he claimed to have done, and got caught. There's very little evidence for any of the events in this movie or his biography, and plenty of contrary evidence and records proving that he wasn't at these places during the time he claimed to be. His biggest con is probably selling his fake stories to Hollywood and Steven Spielberg.
Ace film from the day
Loved this film at the theater. It reminded me of a Tony Curtis film, loosely based on the life and exploits of Ferdinand Demara; The Great Imposter (Universal I.P., 1961).
been waiting for this movie to get a reaction, I've always liked it!
The white-haired gentleman in the flat cap at 32:06 is the real Frank William Abagnale Jr. It's blurred in the video for copyright reasons, but that's him.
This could only have happened pre-internet. What a difference between this and nowadays!
Love this film, DiCaprio, Hanks & Walken 👌 There’s a great interview with Frank Abagnale on the Johnny Carson Show 👍
Inside Man with Denzel Washington is a fun one to watch if you haven’t already. Or a Sigourney Weaver film called Copycat, haven’t watched it in a while but enjoyed it a lot.
Both are absolutely worth the watch
Copycat is GREAT! They watched Primal Fear, and Copycat has those vibes.
always loved sigourney is that the one where she's being stalked by serial killer
@@FrankOdonnell-ej3hd it is, maybe it hasn’t aged well (watched it years ago now) but remember enjoying it a lot
One of Spielberg's more underrated films along with Munich (check that out for SURE).
Brilliant film, I would love to have this much confidence, at any time in my life lol.
This is such a classic. Abagnale pulling it all off like that before 21 is something all right. And he knew his limitations, backing off when people's lives could become imperiled. Also like how the real Frank makes a cameo, ironically arresting himself in France.
Except it all turned out to be fake.
Except the real Frank is nothing like what's depicted in the movie the only thing based on reality is that he's a con artists through and through which including coning people about his exploits.
Liked this movie a ton. Surprised it beat Gran Torino though.
Oh, wow. _Chinatown_ was in your poll. I don't care if it lost - you have to see it. Let me tell you how good it is: it is among the four or five best screenplays ever written (seriously). Just that. Miss it and it's _your_ loss.
18:50 Leo and Amy were both 28 at the movie's release date of 2002.
Oh wow legit didn’t know that!
At least Amy got her big break a couple of years later and did some excellent films like The Fighter and Arrival, she was great in this though and it would have been a big boost to have co-starred with Leo even though it wasn’t till a couple of years later she came into her own as a performer!
I love the John Williams score.
For me the best part was when he saw a news article in the papers about him. I'm old enough to remember reading that article.
My grandmother used to tell us that if act like you belong somewhere (when you don't) you will be ignored. That's why they are called confidence (con) artists.
granny got it right
16:01 "I think you're going to get more than that." 🤣🤣🤣
Hell yeah, this movie rules!
"Would you like to hear me tell a joke?" 😂😂😂
I love this film, thanks.
"Two little mice fell in a bucket of cream. The first mouse drowned. Before he died, he gave the second mouse this gold watch. The second mouse... hid... this uncomfortable hunk of metal up his ass for two years. Then he was sent home to his family. And now, little Frank, I give this watch to you."
If you liked this, I suggest looking into the show "White Collar". The show is, basically, the aftermath of this movie and shows how Frank (in the show his name is Neil) uses his ability and insight of counterfeit to catch other thieves.
Really good show.
lol Turns out Abignale was lying about his lies!
well put!
I’m just gonna say this, I’ve graduated law school and bombed the bar exam twice already! Is it possible, absolutely isn’t likely not really! By the way, I absolutely love your channel. You guys are great.
Hey Daniel and Sam, you reaction was so awesome. I knew this movie would be right up your alley. A mix of action, entertainment and anixety.
The show they were watching was Sing Along With Mitch with Mitch Miller.
For the fans of this type of storyline/character dynamic, I sincerely recommend the TV series 'White Collar'.
You know your a badass when you have just outsmarted the FBI for years, and they just give up and hire you.....
except it never happened.
Hi guys ❤ ooooohhhh whats going with sopranos im losing it over here 😂😂❤🌷
Any body that gets the opportunity should read the book. Particularly the part about his stay in foreign prisons. Makes US prisons seem like The Hilton.
- “PRISONERS” - (2013) Take my word for it!! 🔥
Frank John Hughes is the guy in Band Of Brothers portrayed StSgt.William Guarnere..
21:28 great dad
38:00 oh y’all should watch Sneakers starring Robert Redford, Sidney Poitier, Dan Akroyd, River Phoenix, and more. Underrated movie
0:24 omg Gone Girl (2014) came sooooo close!
Oh yea.. been waiting for this one......Hey have you guys seen "Inside man" with Denzel & Clive owen.....or "The Game" with Michael Douglas✌
this is probably my favorite spielberg movie and i cant explain why. i like the characters of frank and carl, both played by wonderful actors. idk what it is but the movie has me hooked all the way through
As a classic movie buff, I've never gotten into Spielberg's choice of subjects and style.
