One of the greatest things about this film is that even after watching it 10, 15, 20 times or more, you still feel those emotional punches - Brooks, Tommy, the big twist, the reunion. Those things still get me every time.

I think one of the most interesting things about this film is how it tricks the viewer... Everything in the film tells you Andy is the main character of the story, he's the center of the narrative, everything Red tells us is about Andy, the movie even starts with his murder trial.. But Andy isn't the main character, Red is. Andy was innocent, he didn't need redeeming, he has no character arc to speak of really.. He's the same when he escapes as he is when he went to Shawshank for the first time. Red is guilty, he says it himself 'Only guilty man in Shawshank' he feels oppressed by the circumstances, telling the parole board what they want to hear and not understanding they see through it.. He has lost all hope, and repeatedly tells Andy that in order to survive he needs to give up hope, but through Andy's friendship, escape, and leaving a present for him Red is 'redeemed' back to a state of hope... The Shawshank Redemption, is Red's redemption.

"what were those two Italian ladies singing about? The song, a short duet (known as a “duettino”) occurs in act three of The Marriage of Figaro. The words to the song (known at the “libretto”) were written by Lorenzo Da Ponte, an Italian poet and opera librettist who collaborated with Mozart on two other operas (Don Giovanni, and Cosi fan tutti). In this duet, the Countess Almaviva dictates an invitation to Susanna, her maid. The invite, addressed to Almaviva’s womanizing husband, Count Almaviva, is for a romantic rendezvous in order to expose his infidelity. Almaviva speaks a line and Susanna repeats it while she writes it down. Here are the translated lyrics without the repetition:
    On the breeze…
    What a gentle little Zephyr
    This evening will sign
Under the pines in the little grove
    And the rest he’ll understand.
It is only when you understand the context and meaning of the operatic song that you can appreciate the irony of its selection, whether intended or not, by Dufresne: the opera singers are writing a letter to expose an infidelity, while it is the discovered infidelity that indirectly leads to Dufresne being framed for the murder of his wife and her lover and being convicted and sentenced to prison."
That money Andy took from the warden is worth about $3,283,224.69 in 2022

@Move_I_Got_This I'll take shawshank anyday over both those film, Gump was pretty good though. Pulp fiction, not so much. Shawshank has something the other two films do not. It covers all aspects of movie making to perfection. Set design, costume design, pacing, dialog, humanity and inhumanity all hit perfectly. Gump was to fantastical. Pulp fiction was to fictional. Both are none the less great films. But you will find as the years go on, Shawshank edges them both out. Sure it's more simple, but sometimes less is more. Neither gump nor pulp fiction is real enough in the long run. Shawshank on the other hand probably did happen to somebody, maybe not exactly the same way, but within the grasp of human reach. I can not say that about the others.

You can also find Tim Robins in a movie titled Mission to Mars ( 2000 ) in which he co-started with Gary Sinise.
Good movie. A bit cerebral, meaning that they don't spoon feed you all the nuances ( or that's how I perceived it ) so pay some attention.

When I was a little fella, Morgan Freeman was on "The Electric Company" encouraging kids to read and learn. "Easy Reader" is the one character he played in that show I recall the most. The man's voice is a huge part of my childhood TV memories. 20 plus years later, this movie comes out and the ending leaves me in tears. Now, 50 years from my childhood...aw man, Red's "I Hope..." it just turns on the waterworks every time. Thanks Easy Reader.

Still hard to believe one of the best feel-good endings in cinema almost didn't happen. The movie originally ended with Red sitting on the bus wondering if he could make it across the border. Test audiences were so disappointed that Red and Andy didn't meet again that the director decided to change the ending and the rest is history.

I cry every time I hear Morgan freeman say “some birds aren’t meant to be caged, their colors are just too bright”. Such a brilliant line if you think about it because speaks on obviously andy being too special to rot away in jail, but is also so poetically true for so many other things in life.

Brooks came in in 1906, out in the late 1950s; he returned to an alien world. Not just cars everywhere, but culture change. He missed 2 world wars, the entry of women into traditional male roles, women getting the vote. When he went in, women were wives, nurses, and/or teachers. Women teachers didn't date; it was very like a nunnery situation. The only women in business were women helping their husbands. Brooks even missed the Roaring Twenties. He entered prison 40 years after the end of the Civil War. 2 years before the Wright Brothers had performed a controlled flight 180ft in 12 seconds. There were no airports or passenger flights. Overseas travel was by ship and took 6 weeks or more. Atomic bombs. Television. An alien environment. And he doesn't know the rules and has no real help.
Did you notice the envelope of bribery money in the pie box the contractor handed the warden?

It amazes me that this movie didn't win any Oscars, but 1994 was such a loaded year for movies - the biggest draw being Forrest Gump. But I will say that Bob Gunton's portrayal of Warden Norton is one of my favorite movie villains of all time. A very underrated actor with a masterful performance.
And James Whitmore's acting as Brooks Hatlen was superb. The others - Freeman, Robbins, Sadler and Brown... simply an incredible ensemble of performers who nailed it.

I studied this film in school. Nearly every shot can be paused and you'll see the composition represents the meaning and emotion of the scene. They use light and shadow to really make you feel what is going on. Before this film, I didn't know that was possible. There are so many little details that you can find. For example...after he escapes and they find the bible he hid his chisel in, guess which chapter its turned to...Exodus. One of my favorite films hands down.

Tim Robbins is excellent in the dramas The Player and Bob Roberts, and is hilarious in the baseball comedy Bull Durham, one of my favorite sports films of all time.
I first became familiar with Bob Gunton, who played Warden Norton, as a kid who grew up listening to the Broadway cast album for Evita, where he played Juan Peron opposite Patti LuPone as Evita and Mandy Patinkin as Che Guevara. Gunton has a gorgeous singing voice! He is also fantastic in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation called The Wounded, where he played an obsessed Star Fleet captain on a revenge mission.

Robbins is the kind of actor who mostly chooses roles that he likes, not ones that will advance his career. So he's mostly in smaller arthouse movies and stuff like that. Biggest other movies he's been in are probably Mystic River, Bull Durham, Jacob's Ladder, and he had small supporting roles in Top Gun and War of the Worlds, among other films. But this is definitely his biggest and best role. I mean how could it not be? Lead, very meaty role in the highest-rated movie of all time.

Thank you for covering this This is probably my favorite movie. So many great lessons wrapped up in a very well told story. In best of yet the characters feel so real because they give them time to tell their story and to grow on screen by the end of it you feel so much for them. It's funny it's a hard movie, because it's a prison movie, but it's also beautiful and shows the tender side that you have to take those little moments like you said take those little wins.
