I had both the figure and the van as a kid. For the longest time I would tell people about it and no one knew what I was talking about. Great to see content on this interesting man and awesome toy line.
Omg, I forgot about this figure, I think I may have even had it. I have recollections of the hooks and how they worked , Junkman you're like a time machine, well played!
I had him. I was like 4 or 5. I got to remembering old toys I had and went scouring the internet. I was searching Google like "action figure with hook hands" it was frustrating. I finally found a picture of him and was able to find the commercial after remembering his name.
Life is stranger than fiction... While sifting through eBay Steve Scout & Big Jim lots. I came upon this figure. I thought it was gimmicky and very obscure. And I had never heard of it. I would never of dreamed it was a real guy. Wow! Again Junkman.
I know a guy who blew his left hand off (he was left handed) trying to make a bomb out of an old military shell back in the late 80’s when we were teenagers, he had a claw but never used it.
This video inspired me to pick up the "Jay J. Armes, Investigator" book from 1977. Great read so far. Thanks Junkman. Keep making these awesome videos.
Amazing work, Junkman. A brilliant little documentary about a fascinating and rare toy, and a great representation of what sets Junkman content so far above and beyond the crowd of RUclipsrs that just show their collection off over and over again.
I never had the figure, but definitely remember it. I looked it up a couple of years ago and was shocked to learn it was based on a real person! There is a documentary floating around out there about him that I watched...fascinating! The strangest thing about this tale though is the fact that he is "happy to live in El Paso"!
I remember seeing J J on tv a lot and I had that figure. He was rad. I always had him fight along Steve Austin against Mask-o-Tron John Saxon. IMDB is done by random editor nerds, like wikipedia, they miss a lot of tv bios.
I remember wanting this toy so much after reading the true story in Dynamite magazine; unfortunately 1976 was a lean year for us because Dad's Teamster local was on strike and we couldn't afford it
I had the JJ Armes action figure when I was a kid. I sure wish I still did. This has to be one of the most underrated toys from the 1970's. Maybe would have sold better if Ideal Toys created some bad guy action figures for him to fight.
Dude named Armed loses his arms in accident makes action figure based on fake arms. Imagine if fate had struck differently and the explosion instead hurt his friend Dick.
The 70's had some one of a kind characters. Heard of him but never saw the toys on shelves as a kid. Ideal for the time did decent job matching his likeness.
I did not know any of this! One of the most interesting short videos you've done recently, I think I'll do some research of my own on this fascinating character. Well done, JM!👍 PS, seen all the German ads for porn in the comments section? WTF?
Great and amazing story, my and my friend's used to take those train warning things, we used to throw rocks at them to set them off. I didn't realise they were that dangerous. ✌️
@That Junkman You get an (A+) for this video. Oh, by the by! Since the character of ''James Bond'' came up a few times during this video... Are you aware that many have speculated that the creator of ''James Bond'', (Ian Fleming) likely drew inspiration from one or two real life secret agent he learned of from his time working with ''British Naval Intelligence''? Those include, (but are not limited to). ''Patrick Dalzel-Job'' who was a member of ''30 Assault Unit''. British spy and expert skier ''Conrad O'Brien'', whom Fleming befriended in Austria before the outbreak of World War II. It's has also been speculated that Fleming's own brother ''Peter Fleming'' who took part in covert wartime operations; could have also served as an inspiration for the legendary fictional spy. Perhaps the topic of (real life secret agent who may have inspired James Bond) would make for a cool RUclips video. 😉

he's like the inspector gadget of the 70s

Omg, I forgot about this figure, I think I may have even had it. I have recollections of the hooks and how they worked , Junkman you're like a time machine, well played!
I can't believe I have never heard of this guy before. What a character! It's no wonder he got his own action figure, what a crazy life he's had.
Yeah tell me bout it. Junkman needs his own action figure it could come with a Larry the wompa.
I had him. I was like 4 or 5. I got to remembering old toys I had and went scouring the internet. I was searching Google like "action figure with hook hands" it was frustrating. I finally found a picture of him and was able to find the commercial after remembering his name.
I talked on the phone with him once. He was really kind.
Never heard of J.J. Arms but I have heard of J.J. Walker. Aka J.J. Legs.
Thanks for continuing to do vintage 70s. Everyone has switched to the modern figures.

R.I.P. Jay J. Armes.
I hasd one of these and loved it. Growing up in El Paso Texas he was well known.
Wow. What an incredible story. Somebody should talk Martin Scorsese into making a film about this guy's life.
I had a J J Armes action figure. He and Steve Austin had all kinds of adventures in my backyard.
This video inspired me to pick up the "Jay J. Armes, Investigator" book from 1977. Great read so far.
Thanks Junkman. Keep making these awesome videos.
It needs to be a movie!
It sure does.
Amazing work, Junkman. A brilliant little documentary about a fascinating and rare toy, and a great representation of what sets Junkman content so far above and beyond the crowd of RUclipsrs that just show their collection off over and over again.
that's pretty interesting thanks Junkman didn't know about him
Knowing about his alleged background story, Frank Deux would have been a great sidekick figure

Jay J. Armes passed away on September 19, 2024 at the age of 92. Rest in peace, sir. Interesting guy. He was also a devout Christian.

I'm amazed that I never heard about this character before Norman Reedus mentioned him during his interview on Jimmy Kimmels show.
Never heard of the Action Figure or the man himself. Amazing sounding person.

The J.J. Arms estate was popping.
Junkman, you really make some interesting videos. You got a damn good channel buddy. I hope you realize that.
Thanks

Yes sadly. Deleted them as I can
Next you'll have to cover Ted Vollrath, "the Amazing Mr No Legs".
I had that action figure and van as a kid. Had no idea it was based on a real person until I went looking online to purchase another figure.
hehe, memories, I had J.J. Arms action figure.
Great and amazing story, my and my friend's used to take those train warning things, we used to throw rocks at them to set them off. I didn't realise they were that dangerous. ✌️
ermm get 20 packs of the em , then compile them , lol
@@sdqsdq6274 😆👍👍
I grew up in El Paso, and I remember when we'd pass by his mansion and see his billboard.
J.J. Armes has a better handle on things than J.J. Abrams.
I've got figure, don't know what became of the Mobile Unite. Have the hard cover book on JJ Arms too.
I remember J J and the toys. I thought I was the only one. Im 60 yrs old

oh didnt know that, good have to learn more about that one
I happen to have the Mobile Unit complete in my collection. Sadly, I do not have the figure.
I got to learn more about this guy
Someone needs to make a movie about him
Pretty neat 👍
Too bad they never made a Count Dante action figure, these two could team up or fight each other.
Thumbs up for a bonkers toy!
That was a tasty nugget. 👍
Everything about this story seems like a badly written comic book, yet here we are,
That van is one of the ugliest things I've ever seen in my life....I GOT TO HAVE IT
I believe you are telling the story they claim is true but this story is complete bullshit. This guy is a hoax. I don’t believe anything he claims.
but Marlon B and other said it happen, and his hands are really gone like he says :)
Fraud.
