I met this man unexpectedly when I was in elementary school back in 2004. I was out skateboarding with some friends at the Chase bank on Montana next to Piedras when he pulled up in his iconic black Hummer. He went inside the bank and literally walked back outside with two big bags of who knows what. One bag on each claw. He saw my friends and I skating like 30 feet away from where he was and called us over so he could show us the gadgets he had inside his Hummer. I remember we were all in awe and kept asking him questions of what he did or who he was (at the time we had no idea who he was). He then told us the story of what happened to his hands and showed us how he would drive. After spending some time with us he politely said he had to get going and left. Ever since then I've never seen that man again. I'm not going to lie, it was like some majestic unicorn type of shit when we met him haha. The Legend of El Paso... JJ Arms!🕵️♂️
I went to high school with his nephews back in in like 06-07, They'd always tell us the wildest stories about him and his mansion. Never got to meet him of course but the stories were always cool lol
I grew up 200-250 yrds from his mansion/compound and one of my earliest recollections was his lion roaring at feeding time. Wow, i hadnt thought of that in years.
I heard JJ Armes is selling his estate on North Loop. Let me say JJ Armes is the world's greatest investigator, a icon and one of the greatest man I have ever known. He is a great mentor and El Paso and the world is a better place because of him. Thank you sir
I'm from Alamogordo NM 80-90 miles north of EL Paso, I never met the man but my cousin Richard met him and told me the story behind the man and I would never believe him until I went to his mansion and read some books about him. Awesome man
very interesting and fascinating individual. A true inspiration. I am just starting to learn and know this man. I am currently tracking down a copy of his book.
I met Jay a couple of times about 20 years ago, both at McDonald's. We were both "late bloomers" as dads; I was 45 and he was something older, maybe early 50s. We met at McD's eating Big Macs while our sons, both around 5, played in the playroom. Just by chance I had read his first book "Jay J. Armes, Investigator", that told the stories of his "capers". Most notable was the story of Jay, flying his helicopter into Mexico and rescuing Marlon Brando's son from kidnappers. He's the real deal.
OHHHHH MY GOSH! I was raised in El Paso up to the age of 12 when my Mom moved us to San Diego, California in Feb. of 79. I went to South Loop Elementary then we were sent to Capistrano Elementary because of the TIGUA Indians. WOW. Sooooo many memories, from South Loop we had to cross an old sandy CEMETARY to get to the KENNEDY apartments where we lived. I believe Capistrano was opened in 1977 0r 78 because GREASE and Saturday Night Fever had just premiered.JJ ARMS is a friend of my Dad's, he would drive us by to see the leopards, and other exotic animals from a distance. When he was late from work it was because he had stopped off at JJs to visit. There was an episode just now on "Mysteries At The Museum" about JJ ARMS and I had to look it up here because my TWC went out with the lighting storm.
at 00:25 Within shooting distance of Mexico? His house is over 1 1/2 miles from the border, that's over 7000 feet. Must be one heck of a gun to shoot that far :-)
Correct. Google Earth shows his home is 9,250 feet from the Mexico border. That shooting distance being exaggerated, what else is exaggerated in this video?
When I was a child I met him at El Paso Electric Company events they used to host - he was a special guest. I was so scared of this huge man with hooks for hands - my father had me shake his hook. :) He was very gracious when faced with a scared little redheaded girl who hadn't seen hook hands before.
Long time El Paso resident (since birth). I pass him on my way to my grandmothers. He lives dead center of the poorer region of town. My grandmother would tell me stories about him buying girl scout cookies from my mom guys a legend.
My dad lost his hands when he was 12 and my grandfather took him to talk to J Jay and he inspired my dad and told him that without limbs he could be anything
JJ Armes is truly a legend very intelligent one of the best investigators Nationwide hands down no pun intended. Quite eccentric by the way as his house was in the middle of a literal Zoo and I happeed to live right behind his gigantic Zoo at the time. But now that I heard this I think he's more Awsome.
+chris green Philly His prothestics have at least two movable parts. One part of his prothestics can move and pull the trigger of a gun while the other parts hold the handle.
Why in this DGI day and age, no movie has come out about this incredible guy just shoes how dumb Hollywood is. All they do is sequel, remake, reboot, copycat.
@@Outcast_Crow Read his book. It's out of print but you can get a copy on Amazon. He claims he rescued Brando's son by flying a helicopter into Mexico, among other crazy yarns. But he never flew helicopters. He probably just pad Mexican Federales to go in and get the kid.
He once played an unhinged killer on an episode of "Hawaii 5-0".( the old original show) He apparently fires and field-strips a carbine in the episode.
One reason there's no movie about this guy? While the gist of his story is true, the rest is a mountain of exaggerations, deceptions, pride, self-righteousness, ego and lies of Trumpian proportions. A 1976 article from Texas Monthly by Gary Cartwright is a fascinating study of ego and ambition that's still, even now, oddly relevant.

Lmao I never even thought of that. Shit, and people by the border complain about the freeway
Right?! I remember walking down north loop just to check out the animals.

Nel Arzola north loop
My sister lived on San Jose Road. My nephews went to school with his son.
Because of the tiguas or because a new school just opened up? You can take the person out the ignorance but never the ignorance out of the person.
I live in N.C. now and have for the last 24 years. I also went to South Loop, Camino Real middle, then Ysleta high school. El Paso is my home.

My father had an accident and lost 3 of his fingers on his right hand when he worked for Southern Pacific railroad and was still able to do a lot.

I still want to know how he used a gun. Like how do you simultaneously hold the handle & squeeze the trigger with the hook style prothestics he uses.
+chris green Philly His prothestics have at least two movable parts. One part of his prothestics can move and pull the trigger of a gun while the other parts hold the handle.
How about reloading the gun? Some magazines are hard to reload using both hands and fingers I just dont see him doing that
jose pena He was an episode of Hawaii five 0 called hookman look it up very interesting

How ist his story not a movie yet? Jay j armes the detective with no arms
Um. He has arms, from what I understand. It’s his hands that are prosthetic.
I yet to see his TV SHOWS

He once played an unhinged killer on an episode of "Hawaii 5-0".( the old original show) He apparently fires and field-strips a carbine in the episode.

this guy is awesome!
What a hero
To all the naysayers...where do you get your info from that he’s a fake...or is it just something you say that has no backing?
All that money and he can't buy himself some better hands?
Arthur Serino 😂 😂
