My grandfather bought me Manglord back in 84 and the first thing I did was rip off its head and it didn't reattach to its body. I cried and cried while he tried to superglue it back together. He then took it back to Toys R us demanding a refund. Miss you Gramps.
After tearing off and reattaching Manglord's limbs, I remember propping him up on that stand he came with and watching his limbs slowly come undone. It was kind of a sad moment lol
I tried everything to reassemble the torn limbs. I waited overnight. I tried water. The toy had this unforgettable strange smell, which he didn't mention in the video, which proves that he never had the crushing experience of owning one.
I remember my little brother getting this on Christmas morning. I saw the commercial dozens of times before and decided to snatch it from his hands as I said “watch what it can do” then proceeded to tear it’s arm off.Everyone was in shock as I destroyed his gift and then got my ass beat. Thanks Ideal for the great Christmas memory
Thank you so much for this. As a kid I remember being enthralled with the commercial for this toy, but never got one. As I got older I forgot the name of said toy and began to think I imagined the whole thing. Thanks for helping me realise I'm not as crazy as I seem sometimes to friends and family. 😂
I completely forgot but this brought it all back. Like everyone else. Unwrapped the gift, pulled off his arm, it was obviously never going back together. Threw it away.
Manglor Mountain was one of my favorite toys growing up. You failed to mention that the box art was done by Ken Kelly, the artist who did the classic KISS album covers for Destroyer and Love Gun. The main reason that its collectable today.
I still remember that birthday as the worst of my childhood. Within minutes I had torn all three apart to "create new creatures!" Leaving me with a pile of mushy limbs that my copious tears could not repair.
This has quickly become my favorite toy channel. I love all the top 10 lists, action figure reviews and these toy line retrospectives are insanely informative and entertaining! Keep it up guys!
This was a great video! I always love your Oddities episodes. I've never heard of this point before. This is rather informative and entertaining. Keep up the great work. You guys over a toy Galaxy are awesome
For years I have tried to remember a toy I had when I was young. I remembered a green stretchy guy I dunked in slime. Manglord is the one I had! With the manglava mountain chamber and the other 1st set of figures! You guys helped me solve that mystery, also big fan of all your series btw!
It's cool you have an interest in that. My son studies Johnny Carson's Tonite show. I'm fascinated by people fascinated by something from the past. Other kids today, It better be about today or they could care less.
Yep, same here. Tore off one of Manglord’s legs during the car ride home from Toys R Us, and once the reality sank in that I’d pretty much just trashed my new figure, I felt kinda like Ralphie upon deciphering the secret message - “Son of a b-tch!”
I was a poor kid and had to spend my paper route money to get that piece of shit. Do you have any idea how hard paperboys used to work, for chump change? It was a subcontractor job, and took me about three or four hours every day after school, longer on Sundays. Then there was collecting, hunting down all those cheapskate assholes to pay their paper bill. Then there was community chest day on wednesdays when I had to deliver a second advertising paper for no pay. I used to chuck them in the dumpster behind IGA, and never got one complaint. For all that work I made on average about 80 bucks per month. That was like 65 cents an hour, way below min wage at the time. It's no wonder they could only get little kids to do that fucked up job.
Thank you guys so much!!!! Everyone thought I was crazy trying to describe what these toys were but for the life of me couldn't remember frickin the name? Love your channel and love the oddities segments.
It did kind of work if you did it right, but it is a pretty obvious case of badly exaggerated advertising claims IMHO (not that this was the only toy line to ever do that.
Once again you've brought back another forgotten memory from my childhood, thank you! I had Mangalor the humanoid character, but because of his look at the time, I thought he was Swamp Thing, because I remember seeing the movie "Swamp Thing" around the same time. Anyway, it was a short-lived toy in my house once I realized the parts don't stick back together....ended up look like green poop at that point....rip off.
My Manglor figure was my first exposure to buyer's remorse. I used weeks of paper route money for that thing and destroyed it in the parking lot. I've been sore about it for 34 years. Thanks for the video!
I still remember 9 year old me super excited to get Manglord and one of the dinos. That soon turned to disappointment when after ripping it apart the ripped off part would fall off again pretty easily.
I bought manglord and after ripping him apart a bit it’s true, he didn’t stay together very well. I still feel like it’s overstated a bit in the video, because I remember it sticking ok for a while. I ended up taking him back to the store though. They lured me back with the Manglodemon, but I had a similar experience. I think I took that one back, too.
Awesome video! I had that mountain when I was like 4 and have been trying to remember the name of these things ever since lol. What a weird toy and even weirder family member that actually bought this for me! I remember the mountain slime being an absolute mess. The actual figure was one and done.
Thank you for making this video! I, too, was captivated by this as a 5-year old... but adult me could never remember the name of this toy. No one I've spoken to about it had any idea what I was talking about! (I suppose I should feel grateful I never actually received one... sounds like the idea was way better than the actual toy!)
That's what they like to tell you, but as you see here the market corrected well before bureaucracy stepped in. You can't sell shit and call it chocolate, at least not for very long.
@@lucaspeacock6525 My comment was somewhat tongue in cheek, but you notice that I did add the caveat "almost" ;-) Good point about the self correcting market though.
While the Mangolors themselves were disappointing figures, I always loved my Mangolor Mountain playset! I still have it and appreciate it striking oddness and found a lot of play value in having a badass volcano with a dragon head on it!
35 years later and I have found collective redemption. I distinctly remember thinking it was something I was not doing right, as tried to reconnect Manglor back together. Thank you for reviewing.
I remember those 😲 wanted to get one but never even saw it in stores, I remember asking my folks for one but they couldn’t find them...had to settle for Star Wars toys 🙄 Great video Mr MangLarson, Producer ManGreg 👍🏽😁✌🏽
Green Lantern HG ill probably just keep him just for collective 80s item toy.Im sure Manglord will uprade soon like He-man & power lord toys.80s stuff are back even gizmo.
I had Manglord as a kid, but I swear I thought it was Swamp Thing until watching this video. I still have the stand somewhere (that's what reminded me), no idea where the figure went though. Great vid Dan, thanks for the info!
Nice! I remember these. I had Manglor and was hesitant to tear him apart. Even at that age I was like "I don't know.....", lol. I mean the advertising on the box wouldn't lie to us would they? Alas Manglor got detached and boy was I upset when he wouldn't go back together. I think he eventually found his way to the trash can.
Thank you for doing this video!! I could never remember the name of this toy line. I think I got so angry when they didn't go back together that I just threw it in the trash!! I remember I was so hyped after watching the commercial for these and then when I got them and they tore apart and didn't go back together I was so angry!
Thanks for the vid. I couldn't remember what these things were called. The first time you tour them apart you soon found out what a lie we were sold. ;-)
growing up i thought Manglord was swampthing. I was about to go look up the swampthing toy from the early 80's....and then i saw i was mistaken all these years lol thank you for the great work.
This was one of my favorite toys when I was kid. I had Manglord and the lava pit with cage, I didn't know about the supposed destruction/ reconstruction aspect. I am glad I didn't know, because I just played with it like a normal toy. I was really into slim based toys, and pumping the toung to make the cage raise out of the pit was great.
Excellent video Manglarson!! I never saw these growing up in the uk.. but a friend who moved over here from the states in the late eighties told me tales of this oddity.. and now I truly see it. What a gimmick?!? I ask myself... if only? It’s a shame as Bandai got the Tacky Stretchoid Warriors to work so well and took over the toy shelves.. well briefly anyways. Looking forward to the next oddity.
40 year old here and I didn't have a clue about these until this video. So many of these toy lines that I've never heard of; or they've been pushed in the nether regions of my memory.
Wow. I HAD that playset with the prison thing and the ooze. I had completely forgotten/suppressed this until seeing this video. Worst toy ever - I'm not even sure how or why I had it. I remember ripping off one of the legs and it never went back on. The mang lava was really gross and messy too.
Man, I had forgotten about those!! My neighbor bought a few. I do remember finding out that it was quite overstated that the parts reattached. I also remember that we ultimately decided to see if the parts would melt back together with flame (we were weird kids). Yeah, that didn't help either.. in fact I think they were flammable to add to the parental concern. 😂
Manglord Mountain kinda reminds me of the Battlesaurs Volcano Command Base from the Toy Story special ‘The Toy that Time Forgot’. Quite possibly the greatest toy line that never was. *single tear*
I had the finger also!😂 My buddy down the streets little brother was terrified by the ET movie. So of course I scared the hell out of him with it by telling him that I had cut it off one trying to come through the window one night😂😂😂😂 And yes, that thing would light up years later still! And it was very inappropriate looking after growing up and looking back at it. Lol!
Sorbithane, as a kid I remember seeing a demonstration on that stuff on the show “That’s Incredible “. The guy took a piece of sorbithane, put it over his hand then hit it with a hammer. He didn’t get hurt because the material “absorbed” the shock.
I remember Manglors well!! I couldn't wait to get one when I saw the commercials and the disappointment when I was left with the ripped off limbs I couldn't get stuck back on lol. They really should have quit while they were ahead and just advertised them as stretchy, squishy creatures. That way it could just be on the kids if they broke it or ripped them apart like any other toys lol.
Another home run video!!! I had Manglord and Manglor Mountain as a kid!! I had forgotten about it, but I took it home and ripped the leg off. Once I found out it didn't go back my mom asked if I just wanted to return it for something eles, which I did!!!
I have a memory of opening my Christmas gift, getting a red dinosaur and immediately ripping its head off. I am so glad to finally know what the toy was called. Glad I didn't imagine it.
I remember some kid had opened one of these toys at the store and it was just sitting there on the counter. So the first thing I did was tear his arm off like on the commercial. I was shocked that it didn't actually reattach like the commercial had said. I was happy that I had never bought one after that.
All I have left is the Manglor stand somewhere. I thought there was some angle in the sales pitch that you needed to the Manglor Mountain lava goo to make them re-stick. I remember my Dad or neighbor came up with something that made Manglor rebind. But we could never find the other ones in stores. As mentioned in another comment. Manglor was a magnet for carpet fuzz and pet hair.
This was one of those toys I thought I imagined as a kid until I finally internet searched the shit out of it. I vividly remember seeing the Manglor Mountain in Toys r' Us. I wanted it so bad. Pre-Slime bit oozing goodness.
Totally thought this was a swamp thing type toy. Was trying to remember what it was. That’s crazy. I remember tearing limbs off, and trying to see if I did something wrong with each limb I tore off trying to attach it better, or whatever. Wow, thank you. Mystery solved. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I remember getting manglor mountain for Christmas one year it was awesome I thought. As a kid your imagination forces things to be cooler than they might actually be. Anyway still have the mountain but everything else is long gone
Were there other lines similar to this? This video reminded me of something I'd not recalled for ages. I had something I thought maybe was a Manglord. He could stretch and squish and the same limb thing...but the one I had wore a suit of armor. If you took him out of the armor, he was quick to get hair and fuzz stuck all over, which also further depleted the ability to reattach bits.
I wanted one of these sooo bad as a kid and can remember getting one for Christmas ...I remember there wasn't much slime and when I pulled the arm it ripped off at the elbow and would never stay on...We took it back to our local store call Swallens and exchanging it for something else...for the life of me I cant remember what...
Lmao!! This is great; my Mangalore literally lasted an hour. I begged and begged for the damn thing, and tore the arm off. Needless to say, it wasn't reattach able and went straight to the trash. I thought it was just me so this video is reassuring.
I remember having Manglord! Yes, the put back together part didn't last long. I'm sure it was a toy I bought with my grandmother in tow as I literally would just find something that I didn't need but had to have.
I remember getting this toy while on vacation as a kid. I don't remember ripping it apart but I do remember pretending the pool at the hotel was the ocean and he was an alien in that egg they came packaged in. I threw it in the deep end and went down to get it and ended up slicing my thumb open on the jagged edge where the egg was molded to appear broken.
I remember picking up one of these from a clearance shelf at some point in the late 80's. I never really knew what it was, but it was super disappointing.
I'll never forget getting Manglord for Christmas showing my parents that you could rip off parts and put them back on they thought I was lying and just broke my new toy lol
Back in the 80s, you had these "educational" or "newsworthy" segments during Saturday Morning Cartoons meant for kids, and I remember one of the ("One to Grow On" segment, I think?) where they did a news story of a child who bought a Manglord, and was so upset over it, he wrote a letter to Ideal, telling them about what junk the toy was. Ideal's reaction? They sent him an entire set of every figure and playset for free. (I would have been thrilled had it been me, but that kid wasn't happy at all)
Omg,. I had that Evel Knievel bike! I totally forgot about that! Oh, and uhh, btw...this lighting, although cool looking, is making you look a bit pink, dude! Great bideo
I remember tearing a leg off first thing and it never went back on. Even as a seven or eight year old I felt duped by the advertising and that has shaped my view of advertisements ever since.
Don't know that I remember this series! sorta reminds me of the Stretch Armstrong line though a lot messier. Also grateful we didn't get dan saying 'betelgeuse' a third time we would've really been in trouble. :P
I remember half-heartedly wanting one, out of morbid curiosity, but didn't want to risk taking up Christmas list space with it, over unavoidable suspicion.
You forgot to mention that Manglors were really damn good at picking up tiny hairs, dirt and other detrius out of the carpet and refusing to let it go. Ewwww *shudders*
I remember seeing the commercial for the first line (with the mountain) and looking at my dad telling him I wanted it. He just said "it won't work like the commercial." The next day at school my friend had one, and sure enough, we tore off the arms and they never went back on.
Wow I could never figure out what this God damn toy was. Christmas 1984, 2min out of the package and I rip Mangalore head off never to be put back again. Then proceeded to get yelled at by my father for the rest of the day lol. Thank u for this trip into my childhood.
I was a Barbie and doll lover, but for some reason, I really wanted a Mangalore so my mom got me one for Christmas. I got the mountain and there was slime you put in there and you put the Manglor in there and you pump the tongue and he would rise out and it was pretty cool but the slime dried up and then when you do tear off the limbs, they never reattached they stuck for a little while and fell off, but it was pretty cool all the same.
I had the Manglodemon, and quickly discovered that his arms could be torn off and would stick back on for approximately five seconds. And yes, the substance loved to have hair sticking to it, especially the torn ends. Man, what a crock.
Dude. I had a Manglor (the dude) and he was awesome! I ripped off the arms and legs and managed to get them back on. Mostly. You could tell they had been ripped off but they held on well enough that I carried it around with me for what seems to my blurred memory as quite a long while. You had to keep their parts clean to make it stick.
My neighbors had the mountain playset back when I was a kid. It was always sitting outside by the back basement door. I never knew what it was. I can only imagine the figure lasted all of 2 min. at the house. We just used the mountain to torture GI Joes in lava. Saw it in the box at a toy show last year, first time I had seen it in 30 years.
It was kind of a sad moment lol
all I remember is how bad the parts looked when reattached.
I had that same experience. On Christmas morning. :)
My sixth birthday, same thing
ME TOO. I'm 43 yrs old and i can still feel the pain
Side Note: This Toy Line's superpower was The Power to Attract Carpet and Pet Hair!
Lol
Yes it was
So true.
so they could become...CH CH CH CHIA Chia Pets?
Quality as always. This line was such an enigma to me.
Edit: also astonished the title wasn't "the toyline that stretched the truth"!
Stretched the truth and broke promises.
If they just would have said it can stretch and smush, but leave out ripping off pieces it would have been fine
Yeah that’s the ridiculous part of it. It actually was a cool toy otherwise.
Thank you so much for this. As a kid I remember being enthralled with the commercial for this toy, but never got one. As I got older I forgot the name of said toy and began to think I imagined the whole thing. Thanks for helping me realise I'm not as crazy as I seem sometimes to friends and family. 😂
YES YES YES THANK YOU!

It's on the list for sure.

Discovering this video in 2023, and Mangalors are back, courtesy of the Glyos system!
I can’t get enough of these videos. Toy Galaxy is a blast from the past! I’m 40, so most of these toys were things I either had as a kid, or wanted.

I remember seeing that commercial as a kid and was like "that's not going to work" lol! Never bought a single one. 😁
Until every time you show the thing on your channel, I always forget I had a Manglord back in the day.
Great review, I remember being at a friends house and his disappointment when he pulled the arm off and it was forever broken
I can even remember what they smelled like. Yes, I tore mine limb from limb and felt cheated when I couldn't it back together.

Oh, man!! The smell. Still indescribable in my adult years. Lol!
The manglors set where they came out of the slime scared the shit out of me as a kid
Never heard of Manglors, but I want one, thank you Dan!
Great bideo
I had the Manglizard! I had totally forgotten about them!
"Manglava"? More like "mangma". That was a missed opportunity, Manglarson.
megagene oof that sound like a byproduct of poor hygiene, if you pick up what I’m putting down
I remember half-heartedly wanting one, out of morbid curiosity, but didn't want to risk taking up Christmas list space with it, over unavoidable suspicion.
You forgot to mention that Manglors were really damn good at picking up tiny hairs, dirt and other detrius out of the carpet and refusing to let it go. Ewwww *shudders*
The toys look very cool but it’s a shame they weren’t designed better. Cool idea but bad execution. I will always love your Oddities videos!
Don't remember these toys but did have a Evil Kenevil stunt bike that was one of my favorite toys.
How in the world did I never hear of these until now? I thought I knew every toy that came out in the 80's.
I have one of these, Manglor feels like disgusting sticky play-doh. Even my 5 year old didn't want to touch or play with him.
