Much better quality recording than the currently existing one!
I played with all 3 characters:
00:00 Ax Battler
16:22 Tyris Flare
31:21 Gilius Thunderhead -

The good old days when I finished the game with one credit and 6 kids where standing aside me in awe.... Best game ever
This was my one coin game, i used to watch veterans play and when i finally was "allowed" to play with them you had to be able to keep up!
Seriously? That's pretty impressive
Absolutely 💯
Sounds like a scene from Strange Things
@@dragondynastywarrior506 lol. 80s/90s were the best
Classic. Music was on point. Always thought it was cool how the bodies actually stayed there discolored lol. The screams were great as wel
ÆÆÆÆÆRRRRRRGGGHHH
screams are from rambo
@@thomaslee2585 i heard one of them that sounded like a scream from conan the barbarian
Nothing compared. Then on genesis they ruined those most awesome points
The music that comes on when they show the map, brings back so many memories and is nostalgic 🔥🔥
the song when they show the map is just hypnotic
As a child I loved the map music, for one of those weird reasons, I associated it with the short segments of storytelling with drawings in-between commercial breaks of 1980s "Believe it or not" with Jack Palance.
The drawing style and music were similar, maybe? I'll check it now.
the enemies AI actually pretty agressive...the comical of the bandits kicking weak people really made something...this game is a masterpiece
Yes omg i miss these days sooooo much and it certainly is a masterpiece
the 32x roughdraft version is missing this 😢 i need it
@russelljones3115 ..yes it was going to the arcades...miss those days 😥🥹
@@russelljones3115...I'll b at the 50 mark in several more months...time is pushing my but out the doe(door) lol
Ah yes, my favorite character...
Ax Equals Battler
And his fearsome nemesis Death Equals Adder!
The way the female enemies die it's like they just broke a nail or something.
lol
"Revenge them for me my friend...."
Alex -1989
You gotta love that 😆
@@j84martinez44 oh yea, finally killed that cheating bastard Death=Adder
I love this game! Death Adder coming to life from the pile of bodies, the music during that final battle, amazing. I played Tyris just for that dragon animation. Happy to have this on a home arcade setup!
Yep especially when he forms up all those body parts scattered around
It's Death = adder. Can't you read? 😂
Ha! We all know you played Tyris just to see those lovely pixels that make up her ass!
Still some of the finest stage-music ever composed for a video-game - so epic and haunting... 😎😎😎👌👌👌🤩🤩🤩
2:06 Fun fact: the sound that guy makes when he dies is actually taken from the movie "First Blood". It's the noise that Mitch makes when Rambo stabs him in the back of the leg at 39 minutes 26 seconds into the movie.
Actually theres three sounds taken from that movie. they also use the part where that guy falls out of the helicopter too, And a sound a guy makes when Rambo hits a guy in jail.
Wonder if they paid for any of these samples lol.
This game was magical for me, even the soundtrack is magic
The death scream from the enemies (AuGH AEIUGHRA) is extremely satisfying.
It comes from the Rambo first blood movie.
@@icemanforeal100 : Conan the Barbarian
Death screams from Conan and the "AWWW GAWD!" scream from First Blood when Lance Galt gets stabbed in the leg
Correction: the "Aww Gawd" is actually David Caruso's character "Mitch". "Galt" falling out of the helicopter is the one you hear when it shows the villager being kicked in the head. The death scream of the first bosses in the game are sampled from "Thorgrim" when he gets impaled in Conan the Barbarian.
@@RedArremer Agreed.
@@thornmountain8129 weirdly enough, in one of the later and more advanced Golden Axe (where Gilius was on the back of one of the big brutes you could play as), one of the weird monster weapon-masters you fight has the same shrieking battle cry of Zula in that bit where Conan sets her free. "eeYAAAHH!" and all, with her little weird butt-flap swingin'~
ooh ooh! and when you kill the skeletons in THIS game, I swear that 'AAACCK!" is from the first Conan, someone gets hit right on the coconut, I think.
@@Nickel_The_Wise - 'tis that; when Thulsa Doom's priest receives Ahnolt's elbow right in the joy-division... 😎
AX=BATTLER... the sword battler.
GILIUS=THUNDERHEAD... but he never uses his head.
He does with his charge attack.
Right?! That's what I said.
Love this game!! When I got my first sega genesis, it came with 6 pack of games...1 game cartridge but 6 games on it
This is my favorite arcade game of all time. I was 4 years old when it came out, just tall enough to reach the controls. There was just something magic about it. Like my bucket of toy plastic figures had some to life on the screen. They way they would scream and turn to stone when they died, horrifying....even as a young kid, as long as you had a few dollars you could see the fun ending and hear that awesome music.....those were the good old days
Agreed. Spent so many of my parents quarters on this hahah They wanted to go out with friends for pizza and this was the only game to play there. It was my “hush” money. I got to play games for a long time, they got to have pizza and beers with friends. Loved this arcade game so much.
The music on the Turtle level rocked back in the day!
I love Turtle Village so much! :,) Still one of my favourite tracks. So epic, but also so melancholic!
Like it's telling the story of struggle not only of our protagonists, but also of the suffering people of this village.
The dragon mounts are what made me remember this game!
Very good having all three for the viewing. For other comments made on the death screams. The shout of "Oh God" comes from the character of Mitch in First Blood. Rambo's first victim in the woods. The shorter shout of pain comes from Commando where after Arnold Schwarzenegger drives down the hill in a 4x4 with no brakes, he grabs a gun and hits a guy with it, and the guy makes that sound. The women and skeletons dying I have never heard anywhere. Good video.
I don't know about the amazons, but the skeletons are from "Conan, the Barbarian", when Conan knocks down a Set priest in order to get his robes and enter disguised.
Damn - I never picked up that Commando one; gonna have to watch it again now! Love that scene - 'he's still coming... crazy bastard!' 👌👌😎😎
@@MrDibara true
@@MrDibara and don't forget from when Thorgrim gets impaled by the trap at the end of the movie
Am I ever glad I’ve found this post. All of these references are bang on and it’s super fucking cool!
I remember playing this arcade. The hitting sounds are as satisfying as I remember.
Love this game, would like to see a proper remake.
I would like to see a movie
In that case it will be a FPS like all remakes.
@@darrinsiberia They could probably get Streets of Rage 4 developer Lizardcube to cover it.
Though I guess even without them, a new Golden Axe would probably feel like a Streets of Rage game with a medieval coat of paint
@@flashn00b I think you're right. I could totally see them just throwing a skin over the SOR4 engine.
Always loved the aesthetics of that game.
This brings me so much joy.
Woah that end sequence, first time i've seen it!.
When I was 12 I finished it in the arcades... It was common in Europe
Never get tired of that "Ah, Gawd!" death scream
It’s from the movie First Blood
@@Matrim42 whese is the very first guy who dies death cry from???
3 prefect runs, well done
No arcade game at this time created such sound and display. The discolored dead bodies and man, those death cries 😮😮 Well ahead of it's time. 👍
Ok, that ending where the characters break out of the game’s arcade cabinet (much to the players’ horror?)... That was right out of nowhere.
But hey, you gotta applaud SEGA for endings like this.
I actually prefer that over the Genesis' version ending, with that overbearingly cliché dialogue from the king.
what are they gonna do once they catch those kids? kill them?
I love the theme on the back ground, always loved it while playing❤️
What a Music of this game still listening in 2019.
When I start my arcade collection this is the first one I’m getting. Probably the first arcade game I remember really playing.
This reminds me of weeks spent at my grandparents caravan on the east coast of England in the late 80s n early 90s. There was a camp shop, and it had an arcade room at the entrance and as soon as you got within 20 feet of the entrance you would hear golden axe lol. Man, I'd spend the whole day in there playing this, double dragon, ninja turtles, rampage, moonwalker, after burner, and streets of rage. Every morning my nan would give me £5 and I'd end up using it all. The arcade machines was 10p a go back then. Although I think after burner may have been either 20p or 50p a play. Good times.
Streets of Rage wasn’t an arcade game though
@@DazzasBoxing I meant streets of rage 2.
Ok but that’s wasn’t an arcade game either, unless they had a console playing it. Anyway just commented as also remember those other arcades
@@DazzasBoxing Yeah, it was obviously a console game first, but they also put it in a coin-op arcade. I must've played it hundreds of times back in 93.
There wasn't much difference (if any at all) between the two, but yeah, it existed, buddy.
They're still out there too.
I've seen the odd one crop up on Ebay and such like over the year's.
He missed out on summoning the dragon.... the most powerful magic in the game.
That's the best animation in the game.
Thank you! Seems he purposely avoided going max magic on the first 2 chars
3 million+ high score on Pac-Man ruined by Death=Adder pulling the cabinet power cord.
STBill 2:35 lol
You all probably dont care at all but does anyone know a way to get back into an Instagram account??
I stupidly forgot my password. I love any help you can offer me
@Albert Randall Instablaster :)
80's arcade game's music and gameplay is the OG of ASMR.
This was my very first video game ever played. 2nd game ever played was Mario 3. I arrived in this country in 1991 at 5 years old. I was staying in a hotel in Laughlin Nevada and this game was there. I would spend hours playing this. So many memories.
Would love to have played this in arcades back in the day... I was introduced to GA on the Sega Genesis years after it had had its heyday.
It was the nuts - it was one of those games that was everywhere in '89 along with Strider and Shadow Dancer. One of our local arcade's had it plumbed into a massive 30" deluxe screen cab, with teeth-loosening stereo sound speakers... you could hear the "OHHHH GAWWD" death-scream from the other side of the room. 😎😎😎😎
AAAAAUUUUGGHHHH GAAAWWWD!!!!
Lol always thought the death scream was ""AHHH SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT""
When I was a kid, I remember my dad going down to the 7-11 to play this constantly. I mean, my mom would send him down for milk and eggs or whatever, then he would be gone for hours and hours. She would have to drag him away from the game and he would have usually spent the money she gave him too on this damn game. As time went by, things got worse and worse, and he actually started to Cosplay or whatever its called in respect to the barbarian in the game.
He dressed up like him in the blue codpiece, and started to carry a sword everywhere he went. He would make mom or me play "Alex" and we would walk across the lawn, and then have to ask him to revenge us or something like that.
The final straw was when he took all of my mom's vases and threw them up in the air trying to do the magic thing. My mom took me and the cat and we went to live with her mom until I was 18 or so. I know my dad was in and out of mental institutions during that time period, but he eventually stabilized and only does this sort of stuff to a lesser degree now. I still haven't seen him.
EPIC comment my dude 😄
@@ggcade8896 I wish we had MAME back then.
I enjoyed this game when I was a teen. Funny thing is I never new that the skeletons actually became longer and larger when they got knocked down...then they shrank again when they got up (10:32). Lol! 😆
No ligaments and tendons to keep the together, that's why.
This game was my childhood
One of the Best Movie Theater arcade games ever
*****
lol if true that's cool tho
The only thing I don't like about Golden Axe is it's to short.
***** well.. i can see your point in a way no doubt but i felt for a arcade game (exclusively for the arcade) it was just right. However you want a long golden Axe Game then the genesis version is the one you want. :)
*****
me too , on 6 pak and a 400+game cartridge
One of the best Roundtable Pizza arcade games ever.
I'm scared of Death Equals Adder.
I had a virtual crush on Tyris equals Flare back then
@@deceiver444 You and everyone else. She practically set my standards for the ideal female form.
@@GenMaster Still to this day!
@@kev3d yeah baby 😁👍🏻
Just found out today that Comedy Central are going to make an animated series about Golden Axe.
hyped
I fell in love the first time I saw this at my local leisure centre.
This game was at the Carnival Grocery store I begged my mom for a few quarters every time we went lol. Good times ♡
The Galt and Mitch screams from First Blood somehow make me laugh every time.
The guy playing this is the guy we all wanted to be growing up.
This game made you feel like such a badass
Maybe i'm seeing things, but to me it feels like Tyris is using her sword much better here than in the megadrive version.
Man I've never been able to retain the dragon right until the end.
4:38 The townspeople screaming always makes me chuckle. And it doesn't help that they look like Hobbits 😂
This was my jam back in the day
Çocukluğum bu oyunlarda geçti be atari salonlarında...ne günlermiş
spent way too much money on this game and alien vs. predator at my local arcade as a kid. Good times
Un clásico que nunca mueren de mi infancia lindos recuerdos
I remember watching Rambo years after I played this, hearing "AWW GAWWWD",,, I IMMEDIATELY called my brother and told him... that was our battle cry...
I watch this video at least 3 times a year. Awsome.
32:16 I love the sound (tokk tokk) when the dwarf hammers the enemies heads with the handle of the ax
One of the very rare arcade games I was able to finish!
Thirty years ago, I said that the dwarf is the best character and I stand by my declaration.
Glad he's got some fans :)
I used to believe that. But it’s been proven that the girl is the best. She has the same strength as everyone else and the most magic. I agree she is harder to use in melee.
I'm pretty sure there's not enough between them to really matter.
@@alexandarjelenic2880 I'm pretty sure her attacks are somewhat faster.
Shorter reach, but she seems to have better innitiative than other characters.
Very nostalgic... my love for GOlden Axe is the arcade version... the Genesis version doesn't cut it. Beating up those little dwarves for their bottles and riding those weird bird dragon mounts
Best arcade ending ever
I like this one better. You get to see every character and every level of their magic.
When does flare show max magic?
I spent my days after school at the local game room until beat the game! Classic!
Me and my friend loved these games.
Love how the dead bodies stay on the ground, unlike the Genesis version. :)
Weirdo
44:50 great ending, those were the times!!
🙂👍The best!! ..and the "winners don't use drugs" screen so reminiscent of the era.
Extraño los 90's...que feliz era en esa epoca
Great ending
Another true longplay, since by the length of the video, you used all three characters.
Factiod: Some of The Male Death sounds are sampled from Rambo First Blood 1: Art Gualt's Fall from the chopper is used when an enemy is stepping on a civilian.... and the Trooper's screams from the wilderness scene...and a 3rd and 4th I can't Place...
I remember when i would be on the final boss and having 8 kids behind me watching. Adrenaline af
Since I played the genesis version first, and then decided to wanted to move on to arcade games by Sega, I like the arcade version golden axe alot more than the genesis version now.
You're amazing!
This would have been beautiful on the Saturn.
Loved this game. Just stood there mesmorized until beating it.
Car scratched by Death=Adder
This WONDERFUL GAME reminds me when I used to be 10 :) :) :) !!!!
cool game especially back then, outrun was cool too and afterburn
Hahaa, stun-locking the bosses is hilariously. One of my favorite games in mid 90s
Death=Adder made me sneeze when I was half-way through squeezing out a poo.
*Fun fact:* Golden Axe uses the cop death scream sound effect from the movie Rambo (part 1). 😇
Good! Great video!
So many quarters but worth every cent.
Thank you
Character: AX-BATTLER
Weapon: Sword.
Oh shit, it was the first Golden Axe I played like a lunatic as a kid. I had it in my mind it was Golden Axe II. I wonder if it was mislabeled in that place. Wound up beating it at the pizza place in town the weekend before we moved away. Good shit.
now making a comeback next year
In the end, a bunch of humans get chased by the enemies for breaking the arcade machine.
This one a must for me
My childhood...I played in 1990 but until today I like
25:05 “you don’t need a sword. Just take these +5 boots and save the world!”
We live in an Era of magic and high adventure!
You may call me.... Alex.
Nostalgia!
This game is fuckin awesome. Everything about it. Its got all the right little touches that put above your avg beat em up.
the final scene, where the villains and heroes actually break out of the video arcade machine and into the real world....that would make an amazing movie idea
That happened
I see where the animations in Battletoads came from
If you notice carefully then You can find that Death Screams of Male enemies are taken from Stallone First Blood Movie. One scream is that when Rambo through a stone to chopper and Cop fell and along the way he screams. And 2nd scream is taken when Rambo hurts a cop in jungle using traps.
and the boss death cry is from conan the barbarian...
@@aerisgainsborough2141 Yes you are right. Boss Death cry is actually Death Cry of Thorgrim in Conan The Barbarian during the Battle of Mounds, when he is stabbed by a big Spike.
@@ALLSTARGAMER so number 1, how did sega not get sued?? number 2 ,where did the skeleton's death cry come???
