Yes, Barack Sabbath. I love this scene at the end where we see how they did the shot of Karloff on a horse! ruclips.net/video/l3zLx0cFwCE/видео.htmlsi=Wfwmk7SvAYk-PiJf

This movie was head and shoulders above "in a violent nature ". It oozes atmosphere, storytelling, folk horror, and style. This movie will go down as a cult classic just like "the love witch".

There was an anthology back in the 60s called Black Sabbath and the third story is the story of the Wurderlak. The Wurderlak is played by Karloff. Great anthology movie. You have to see it, if you haven’t already.

Having an all-live cast around a single obvious puppet is an interesting choice; for some reason, the clips you've shown makes me think of Jan Svenkmeyer's Faust, which does the same thing (Mephistopheles is a puppet).

x Watched The Iceman Cometh, great movie!
o Thought Maggie Cheung's character Polly was highly impressive, excellent comedic and dramatic performance!
o This was actually the fourth movie I have seen with Maggie Cheung on it, I never expect to recognize actors on foreign films!
o The action scenes for the two lead warriors were fantastic, I especially liked when Fong Sau-ching (Yuen Biao) would stab with his sword when arching his back backwards (like a backwards bridge stab?).
o One of the best dramatic moments of the movie for me was when Fong Sau-ching saw that court drama on the TV and realized that the Ming Dynasty was finished years ago!
o That outfit that Fong Sau-ching wore during the last fight scene, with the shoulder pads attached, is like classic 80s street punk wear!
x I am going to watch Buried Alive tonight!
x I will keep my eye out for The Vourdalak on streaming!

I am now looking forward to this twice as much as before - I am fully behind using a puppet for this.
Like...listen, one of my favourite undeaders ever are the skeletons from A Chinese Ghost Story. (which is like Army of Darkness levels of fake kind of skeleton)
    Great choice by the director!
(side note - since you're getting into Hong Kong cinema - you should 100% watch at least the first AChGS! (though all three are great))

Glad to hear some additional opinions on this. I got to see this at a film fest some months ago. The slower pace, the film grain, the practical effects...it felt like a throwback to horror movies from an earlier time (before synth scores were used). It's not particularly frightening, but the movie gets the job done and does it well.
I'm hoping this gets a physical release at some point (at least blu-ray) because I'd love to add it to my horror collection.
