This is the best adaptation of Dunwich Horror ever made, bar none. A superb gem. I've listened to others since finding this one, and I always come back to this.
One of horrorbabbles best pieces of work. You really respected the text, and your own dramatic touches blended seamlessly with it. Much better than most of the stuff on TV.
I love how, in the throes of horror, with this terrible monster in front of him, Armitage just starts describing it in very distinct, scientific terms. Meanwhile the other bystanders are probably just wondering what the hell he's talking about. "It's a squamous, reticulated, anthropomorphic saurian!" "Huh?" "It's a darn weird lizard-man!"
Damn right, comfortable place to sleep, missus asleep but no matter, she will be spared the fear and madness, head phones are on and I'm going to delve deep into the Dunwich Horror, thank you again for your fantastic Audio renditions of Lovecraft!
This feels more like the style of reading Lovecrafts' stories where meant for. Drama. Exclamation. Suspense. All of it animated in the imagination with the aid of theatrics. Well done. : D
I listen to this atleast once a week, sometimes more. Superb! The different characters, sound effects, the art, that groovin original track. Kinda criminal how few click gets imo. Also, When the dog barks again at the end, too good
I love that HPL directly mentions Machen's The Great God Pan, which makes such elegant, expressive, engaging, sophisticated, emotive & excellent use of written English & which clearly inspired HPL & many others. Top-notch adaptation, HB!
I love the dunwich horror. It's one of my favorite cosmic horror stories. I listen to the audio books all the time. I need to dust off my book of lovercraft stories and read them again.
I have been listening to these at work - thank you! You have a gift of reading, you convey the stories really well & it helps me pass the time. I greatly appreciate it. Cheers!
because of my familiarity with this story since i was 11, i didn't pay this much attention. However, i'm quite glad i did. Despite having read it and heard it read MANY times, you, the wonderful Horrorbabble team, put together a version that was a wonderful and even refreshing treat to listen to. Brilliant as always, Ian
This might be one of HBs best works, the respect for the original text but with a personal touch that I really really like. The whole traveling man stops at an Inn, with the barkeep retelling the story instills the whole story with another creepy layer. Thank you HB for all your hard work!
This recording is just so amazing, I must’ve listened to it at least 10 times, please do more of these dramatic adaptations, they set the scene so well
I listened to this after listening to your original recording yesterday, and seeing the improvement side by side is mind blowing! The way you bring the characters to life is amazing!
Love your videos, actually use them as background noice to fall asleep because your voice is soothing. So thank you for your anti insomnia voice. (Also listen to them when reading the Necronomicon)
This is still easily my favorite upload, and one I return to often. In fact, this is the same video that brought me to the channel. What a voice for narration!
When the demon spoke... Absolutely amazing imagination of the dialect that was to be used I must say. Considering it's an unspeakable language but you did an amazing job to recreate or create I guess the proper somewhat sound. Absolutely terrifying it was
WOW listen to your first rendition of this you did 7 years ago. Man you have really have come it to your own. In another 7 years it will be Sir Ian Gordon 👺☠️
The reaction of one of the townspeople in the background after Armitage's line is one of my favorite parts of this 😂 In all this fear and anxiety I feel despite listening to this mid-day, I needed that tension-breaker. I genuinely laughed out loud and had to re-listen to it several times.
Wonderful production! As a radio person I know the work that goes into sfx in drama and you've brought this story to life beautifully. Lovecraft would be proud.
I adore the readings on this channel, but because I use them to fall asleep to, I keep losing my place!!! You have no idea how long Mountains of Madness took! 😅 I especially love the dramatisation in this one!
wow. how many voice actors were involved?! Just two... !? It sounds like an ensemble cast. This is outstanding work HorrorBabble. A narration that draws you into another world...
We pronounce it that way over here, too. Trouble is, the whole Dun-witch thing ended up etched on my brain having heard several audio versions in my early years.
This being my favorite (Well, tied with Charles Dexter Ward) Lovecraft tale, I'm so happy that you gave it this dramatic adaptation. I dare say Lovecraft himself would approve. And all the music is PERFECT. I love this so much! Thank you.
Delightful sinister for this early September. I would love to hear more but must save the unnamed terror for another time definitely going to have sub for more.
Yup I would get my audiobooks from a collection of other channels but after hearing this, my first story with you guys, I done found where I belong!!! Amazing work!!! New sub. New member. Whatever you guys need…I’m in!!!!
The part Henry is describing the dying Wilbert, I would expect he would say: " Stop describing me as a freak you stupid human and help me! I'm bleeding! " Are you familiar with the Necronomion sir? I'm a shoe salesman, not a sorcerer
Just when you thought it couldn't be better. Wonderful opening, great voices, and gorgeous background music. The pacing is masterly. You have outdone yourself.
A wonderful adaptation and reading! As a native New Englander, I'm always interested in the accents used by non-local readers. The landlord is quite good. The salesman is definitely a southerner. "r" should be more like English, "ah" or "eh". "Right" should be more like "roight".
Thanks Carol! We opted for generic accents for this one... I'm not too sure I can pull a 'New England' accent off consistently with material like this. :)
Holy cow man this is still my fave of Lovecrafts works. The way you interpret the speech of the horror honestly sent chills all over my body. An amazing piece of work!
TL;DR 7/10 Great reading and loved the production! Still prefer the 2015 reading though. Recommend everyone go listen to it I've been waiting for this for quite a while now. Your original 2015 recording of TDH is by far my favorite among your readings, I've probably listened to it over 30 times now and I fall asleep to it frequently. I even noticed that you kept the original recording of Wilbur's brother speaking at the end (or did the most perfect recreation I've ever seen.) so I'm very biased in my review of this Dramatic Reading. I actually still prefer the original. But I don't think this is inferior by any means. The intro to the reading is absolutely perfect. The description of the country gets you imagining very rural and backwoods people which we can all imagine. Then the theme song comes in and invades with a very alien tune and gives the sensation of unease that I'm sure the people of Dunwich were feeling upon being confronted by such an unknown being. It really got me right in the mood. One of the very few things I don't like was the lack of Ian voice acting Old Whately and Wilbur. These had me becoming resentful of George for stealing these away.(lol) Also throughout the story I kept wondering how George had such first hand accounts about so many intimate moments dealing with the Whately's and the whole ordeal. I half expected George to be a twist villain at the end. That maybe Wilbur survived and decided to torment people who talked about the incident. I felt that the part that succeeded the best was the discovery of Wilbur at the college. The shriek from Wilbur, the sounds of the breathing in the background, and the final words with their distortions. All of it was perfect and made me feel like I was right there. Any extra background sounds that are added in always get my imagination flowing and allow me to visualize the story much better. I wish there was more when there were descriptions of the invisible horror bending the trees or maybe for the final call of missus Fry. Overall I give it a 7/10. My biggest complaint is that I simply want more of your impressions. I hope you'll take that as a compliment! Keep up the good work guys!
Thanks for the generous feedback, sir! We took a few chances with this one. (And yes, we did indeed keep the original Wilbur's brother recording...!) We're happy that folks still enjoy the original recording. Ian & Jen
I've stipulated in my will, If the need should ever arise... Ian Gordon is my designated life narrator. lol
An excellent choice sir! But I wonder what HIS rendition would be, and what horror THAT might evoke. Beware, and be careful what one wishes for...
I shall procure the services of our extrodinary host for the reading of my manifesto 🤪
"... this odd creature of queer and unusual habit..."

What a skilled salesman, that bartender. Sold thrice the volume he normally would have, with a captivated audience.
