I like this one but I think Vault of Horror is my favourite. The opening music is Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor. Edit - Joan Collins is absolutely beautiful in this one.
Great video, though I feel like you underrate the wraparound. There are some interesting subtle touches in it. For example, Joan Collins begins the movie wearing the brooch that her husband gives her for Christmas in All Through The House, giving us a hint that the events we are seeing have already taken place. And the character who will have his heart removed in his segment enters the crypt wearing a red rose over the place where his heart would be.
I saw "Tales From the Crypt" in movie theaters when it was released in the early 1970's. I loved it then and still love it today. It is my favorite Amicus anthology film. I also loved the HBO "Tales From the Crypt" TV series.
OMG! I saw this as a kid on TV and have been trying to figure out what it was for YEARS! I only remember the final story, and in my mind it was a feature length movie. Thank you so much for sharing and unlocking a core memory!!
I really hate what the 80s TV show did to the Christmas segment, They revealed the "twist" early. So it wasn't a hook. Robert Zemeckis directed it! Also the great Ian Hendry is in Polanski's "Repulsion". (A great director despite his despicable personality)
This one has been my favorite in the series since I was 12 years old, and I first watched it because I loved the TV show. Interesting thing about this film is that only the Reflections of Death, and Blind Alleys segments are from the Tales from the Crypt comics. Poetic Justice, and Wish You Were Here are from The Haunt of Fear comics, and And All Through the House is from The Vault of Horror comics
How do you compare the TV version of 'And all through the house' to this version? I enjoy the TV version but it plays it more for laughs and the threat of the murderous Santa is fully on display from early on so the final 'twist' is not as effective. I prefer the original for it's more subtle and surreal atmosphere, just a shame about the terrible red paint they used for blood!
I just re-watched this one last week! I really enjoyed your nuanced review. You brought up some good points some may miss. I appreciate your praise for Peter Cushing's performance, and the 'Poetic Justice' segment.
I'm kind of sure that a couple of these stories were re-adapted in the TV show, I'm sure about the christmass one, but I have suspicions about one or two more.
I'm a big fan of this movie, it's the best anthology in my opinion. I'm with you on the last story, it just seems a little too long for me, but just like you, I appreciate it. My favourite story is the Christmas one, which I watch every Christmas haha, and the next is the Arthur Grimsdyke, Peter Cushing story, although it does upset me, for the cruelty the neighbor shows to him, but revenge is definitely on the cards. Love the movie theme music, written by Bach. All in all a classic movie.
Peter Cushing’s character was a spiritualist ,which was really sad since his wife had just died and he was in deep mourning . The next segment always perked me since the character’s wife asked for him to return the way he was right before the crash.Ok he had an MI and was dead but he was NOT embalmed so the wish was invalid and not binding
I have sympathy for the character 100% BUT he was an OCCULTISM guy who became a ZOMBIE and didn't REST IN PEACE. Thats evil even if it takes out another evil (the rich asshole).
Saw this in Patreon loved it watched it again here love it more this show is a faveorite, also did you see 'vault of horror' with Tom Baker the 4th doctor he was awesome thanks for sharing keep going.
I was going to remark about Tom Baker but I thought nobody else would know him outside of the UK, I have some great creepy memories of him in that kids telly show, I think it was called The Book Tower and although I only remember a little of it, for some reason it seems scary lol
The Cushing segment is the best, with Blind Alleys very well done too. The problem I have with Tales from the Crypt and Vault of Horror is that five stories in an anthology movie is one too many, and the weaker episodes are just too superficial. Cushing, Magee and Joan Collins (three names you don't expect to see in the same sentence) carry their episodes across the finish line.
Hard to decide which I love the most, Tales or House. I saw Tales in a theater when it was brand new. When the hand came through the door in the Joan Collins segment the audience jumped out of their seats!
Yup! Easily my favorite of all the Amicus anthology films. This one hits so hard on every note. I’ll never forget the first time I caught it on HBO or Cinemax back in the early 90s…it was in the tail end of the “Wish You Were Here” segment and I was blown away! Add to that that my Mom chimed in, having seen it during its original release and, of course, she mentioned the “And All Through The House” segment. I was immediately intrigued and anxiously scoured the TV Guide for the next time it’d be on so I could tape it. Absolute classic! Peter Cushing steals the show as far as I’m concerned!
Love this movie and I pretty much agree with your analysis. The All through the night segment is my favorite segment and an iconic Christmas horror story.
My school showed this to us on the last day of school. I was in 8th grade ('83?) and had never seen a horror movie. It terrified me. I never forgot it. Now, I pretty much only watch horror and this is definitely top 10 for me. And Joan Collins revisiting it on American Horror Story was awesome.
I think I used to have one of the paperback anthologies that Milton Subotsky saw which inspired him to do Tales From the Crypt and The Vault of Horror. It was a mass market paperback format and the stories were reprinted in black and white.
"Blind Alleys" was one of those stories in the comics that ended with the narrator saying "And then some fool turned on/off the lights". In this case, the lights were turned off as the Major was mauled by his now feral dog.
I absolutely love Vault of Horror. Very underrated. I didn’t like it my first time I’ve watched it. But through the years I watched it more, the movie grew on me.
I enjoy this one. The first story is my favorite; I totally agree about the warm, cozy feeling of Christmas punctuated by the blood spatter on the paper...may be the best shot in the film.
First saw this a kid and that image of the killer Santa just freaked me out for years!!!! Joan Collins in fantastic as always! I think Tales From The Crypt is a solid Amicus anthology and rates as number 2 for me in the whole series 👍
Since you like the hand coming out of the grave check out Haunted Honeymoon. I remember my mom freaking out of the guy walking along the wall. So, I told to wait around you are going to see what was up with him. By the end she loved the movie.
The Joan Collins tale was remade for the nineties with the late Mary Ellen Trainor in the Collins role. For the tales from the crypt TV series. The original was better
Wish You Were Here & All Through the House were my faves on this. The TV Series also did a great remake of All Through.... on Season 1 of the show which i usually have on my xmas horror list.
I saw this film in the theater when it first came out. I was too young to watch it, and it scared the living shite out of me 😆 What a classic horror film!
This movie makes for GREAT gateway horror, and was my daughter's best-loved horror movie at around age 9 to 10. (Coraline being second.) Her favorite segment was the Blind School Revenge. I thought she'd really dig Creepshow as a follow up (as these two are BY FAR my best-loved anthology horror movies), but it didn't have nearly the impact.
She was pure seething hatred and she does that better than most. I am surprised, and feeling very old, that nobody seemed to comment about her in Dynasty lol That must be her most famous role, surely???

I worked on it (doing effects and inserts), and generally don't have very good perspective as the films I've worked on. I mostly am too aware of things I regard as faults and/or missed opportunities.. I'd be curious as to your thoughts.) I think it at least had some interesting images.
I love the original Tales From the Crypt movie. I was around 8 when it came out and to honest I really don’t know how old I was when I saw it but I can tell you I have remembered it my whole life I also couldn’t tell you what my favorite episode is because they all have horror, terror and Suspense overload. I am almost as scared of this movie now as I was then. It seems like the scariest movies to me are the ones I saw as a kid the stuff available now is alright but it’s so over the top it’s almost funny. The ones I remember most are Attack of the Crab Monsters From Hell it Came Night of the Hunter Them EXORCIST
I love EC and the related movies but have gripe. Predictably, every story about punishing evil. It’s not scary when you know bad things will only happen to the bad people. That has carried on through Creepshow, and even more recently Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities show on Netflix. If someone’s doing something bad within the first five minutes, you already know what’s going to happen.
this is a great film, but i have a slight nitpick with the peter cushing segmentwhen the zombiefied pc came up to the table the other guy screamed really loud, how come his dad never got up to see what the scream was, i know its a little issue but it bugs me, am i being a bit pedantic

Tocatta and Fugue is my ringtone lol. I get looks

That's my favorite too!
Amicus made the best horror anthology movies!
I finally watched this when I found a two pack DVD of it with Vault of Horror about 15-20 years ago. Both are amazing films.
I’ve got that 2 pack as well! Although I watched all these films as a kid on tv in the 80’s.
