CORRECTION: The Innocents (1961) should absolutely be on this list, but I completely forgot that it came out this decade. For some reason that film seems older to me. So throw that it, and this is my Top 31! 😅

    • @arlem525

The Innocents is my absolute favorite movie of all-time. Deborah Kerr is phenomenal. The ambiguity if who the actual villain is. Is the governess insane ? Are the ghosts real? It took me decades of watching it to decide. Truman Capote's screenplay is probably the best work he ever did.
For me, it would have been a 3 way tie with Rosemary's Baby and Dracula has risen from the grave, which has my favorite Dracula death in the Hammer series.
Didn't Christopher Lee refuse to speak, because he thought his dialog was dreadful?
Anyway loved the list, you actually had me in suspense over what the top picks were going to be.

I''m also a senior and have loved horror movies for over 60 years. I've seen quite a few of these and agree with many of your rankings. I also made a list of the ones I haven't seen yet. The Birds, Psycho, and Night of the Living Dead are definitely top of the list of any era. One thing about the Night of the Living Dead - when I saw this in the 1970's, it was really unusual to have a black man as the hero - the calm, take charge, caring person. When he survives the night, and hears voices outside in the morning, and realizes he is safe now - he pops his head up only to be shot by a sniper, who assumed he was a flesh eater. I HOWLED at the unfairness! That is one thing that makes this movie a standout.

IMHO Cape Fear should in no way be classified as a horror movie. I would put it squarely in the Suspense/Melodrama category. I mean if Cape Fear is "horror" then The Desperate Hours(the original not the inferior remake) or Straw Dogs(the original not that substandard remake) or The Taking of Pelham 123(the original yada, yada) and a whole bucking funch of other similar movies would have to be reclassified as horror films. Anyway that's my two cents, which is probably a deficit by now thanks to Bidenomics.

My favorites from the 1960s that did not make this list:
-Tales of Terror (1962) - the very first Vincent Price movie that I ever watched.
-Sweet Body of Deborrah (1968) - I suppose it's more of romantic thriller/giallo, but Carol Baker and Jean Sorel are so good-looking. I watched it with my wife and there's a funny scene where the couple is watching a strip tease and Carol asks "Do you find her good-looking?" and Jean responds with "Would you believe me if I said no?" I think I will use that line from now on when she asks me that question in similar circumstances.
-Last Man on Earth (1964) - It's unfortunate that Vincent Price did not make more European films, so we get to see him in one here.
-Spider Baby (1968) - I have a signed photo (by Sid Haig) of this movie
-Blood And Roses (1960) - a great and beautiful adaptation of Carmilla
-The Terror (1963) - The plot doesn't make much logical sense, but the atmosphere is amazing. One of Corman's best.
-Nightmare Castle (1965) - Watched this almost 20 years ago on a public domain DVD collection of classic horror. This led me down the rabbit hole of becoming a classic horror movie nerd. I have a DVD of this signed by Barbara Steele.

So glad you appreciated Hammer’s Phantom, my favorite of the story. I fell in love with Heather Sears and her romance with the Raoul character (Harry in this version) is the best romance of any of the versions. And Herbert Lom, that voice! Hammer’s biggest budgeted film at the time, and a flop in the UK when it was released, but did well everywhere else. The foggy London atmosphere is just far beyond Paris. And the score by Edwin Astley is a masterpiece. It’s just the best version, period. Rosemary’s Baby another great choice and correctly at #1. I love all the Corman Price Poe films, and yes, Pit and the Pendulum is my favorite as well. I agree with most of your choices, but I would put Black Sunday higher for atmosphere and cinematography alone. The opening execution sequence destroyed a lot of young minds! Great list! Wait Until Dark ( has what maybe the best jump scare in any movie in the 60's, and the seeing the finale in a darken movie theater is beyond creepy and scary). Great performances by Alan Arkin and Audrey Hepburn.

The Haunting is the only horror movie to give me the heebie jeebies.
I believe it was Castle that said, "What is seen can be frightening, what is unseen is horrifying."
RE: Rosemary's Baby - Mandela effect being a thing, it was the poster that made you expect the "claw" rising from the basinet. You do catch the eyes at the very last, but just for a second and that's all you see of the baby.

I love old horror movies, too, so I appreciate your zeal. I really love the 60s and 70s stuff like Hammer, American International, et al. spilling into more graphic and sick 80s giallo. It all started with a love of occult paperbacks from writers like Dennis Wheatley, Black Sabbath music, and when my mother took me to see The Omen when I was 13 and it effed me up and traumatized me, in a weirdly good and satisfying way. I think that's why the scariest movies to me have a horrific aspect mixed with some supernatural element that you can't really battle or do much about. There are so many offbeat and interesting films people know nothing about. My favorite actors are Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, and Barbara Steele. One I always remember and come back to is "Nightmare Castle" with Barbara Steele from 1965.

Before I watch the video; all my views of 1960's Horror are midrange. The Raven, The Masque of Red Death, Witchfinder General, The Last Man on Earth, Three Faces of Fear, and Night of the Living Dead. Vincent Price was still at the top of his game in this era.

You don't have to see the baby in Rosemary's Baby.
The look of horror on her face and asking "What have you done to it's eyes?" is enough.

Black Sabbath scared the beejesszus out of me as a kid. That old witch was like a precursor to that spinning head girl in the 70s, IYKYK.

A very nice list. Also very cool you ranked The Plague of the Zombies that high. I can also recommend The City of the Dead (1960) and The Haunted Palace (1963) but you probably already know those movies.

If you dig Viy, search for a series called Gogol. Nikolai Gogol authored the source material for Viy. He's kind of a Russian Poe.

I have seen most of these and love them all. As some have already stated, I would have included The Innocents (which you have added) and Village of the Dammed. But as you explained, these are you personal favorites, so all good. Very entertaining presentation.
Gentle recommendation--don't give away the ending, especially when it is key for the particular reasons you correctly mentioned (Rosemary's Baby). I have watched it several times and had almost forgotten that climax--which is a good thing as it adds enjoyment on multiple viewings. I appreciate that you did not do that for other films on the list. Great list and commentary! Really enjoyed it.

Fantastic list! Every one a classic! I gotta say my fave Corman Poe flick is The Fall of the House of Usher, just perfection. Pit is my #2. Glad to see Psycho on there in a high position; it’s my fave Hitch film. Surprising but welcome inclusion of the underrated The Gorgon in a high position; it contains one of Christopher Lee’s most atypical and enjoyable performances.

About Premature Burial DYK that the expression saved by the bell supposedly had nothing to do with sports (boxing). Before there were EKG machines etc, there were burials of people who appeared to be dead. Some people were buried with bell pulls inside the coffin that could be rung and alert caretakers.

Happy to see Viy and Black Sunday here. I would have included a couple of Japanese films in my list, they were knocking it out of the park in the 60s with Jigoku, Kwaidan, Onibaba, and the like. Herschell Gordon Lewis would probably make an appearance, I'm thinking Two Thousand Maniacs! Exterminating Angel would also be on mine. Rosemary's Baby is one of the best horror movies of all time, glad to see it at the top.
    Good list!
