It was a very good film. It was a whodunit meets Hammer Horror, but made a change from the usual Dracula / Frankenstein. The story was engrossing. As a horror it was so so, but as a study in small town politics and paranoia, it was very good. Peter Cushing did sometimes do creepy villains and he made an excellent dodgy doctor.

If I was to think of my favourite British actor, it would be Christopher Lee.
He achieved so much in his illustrious career. Truly a Legend

Just when I get excited because of the old Columbia logo, I see the Hammer Films tag and had to catch my breath. Hammer was amazing. As horror movies go, they were the A24 of their day.
And that opening score? It doesnt get any better for classic horror.

When I was watching Hammer movies in the 60's Christopher Lee scared the bejesus out of me as Dracula ( I saw it in the movies) and wore a rosary around my neck for a week. lol Peter Cushing played a great hero and I miss them both. Their legacy is still here for us to enjoy.

I am a long time fan of Hammer Horror films. They are so well-written and the actors give a top drawer performance. I am especially a fan of the look and feel, the tempo and so much more; the music flows well with the action. I have watched these over many years. Thank you.

I don't think they ever made a bad movie, just "good" and "great".
They also all had a certain "look" about them, that I think was a big part of it, along with all of the classically trained actors, directors, and screenwriters.
This can no longer be duplicated with the idiots that now run the film industry, due to the dumbed-down agenda that has been forced down everyone's throats for the last 40 years or so.

I remember seeing this on one of those Saturday Night BBC2 Horror Double-Bills back in the 1980s. While it's not absolutely perfect, it has a great story that made a change from the usual monsters and therefore a very different lore and feel. The music is extremely eerie. Great cast. Aside from the Hammer regulars, we had Richard Pascoe as the hero, and Patrick Troughton, I think filmed around the same time he was also Doctor Who on TV.

Apparently, Peter Cushing, after his wife had died, loved and missed her so much that he insisted on having a picture of her on set- usually on his desk if there was one.

He was also a Cantina patron, a Stormtrooper, & a Death Star trooper.
In Empire he played a Snowtrooper gunner, & lead stormtrooper.
In Jedi he was the biker scout who fell off the speeder bike, a stormtrooper & also Weequay Jabba's skiff master.

Wonderful stuff. This is one of my faves. Great quality upload too!I love the fact that Hammer had their own original monster. That is to say, it's not the Wolfman, Mummy or anything Universal had previously explored. Different versions of The Gorgon creature could have returned in different time periods. Great performances all round, especially Lee, Cushing and Shelly, who is criminally underrated.

My all-time Hammer fave: the sombre tone, otherworldly sets and haunting score setting it apart from the rest of their horror output. And the divine Ms Shelley, adding still more class to a classy take on the Classics.
