Always happy to see Madman get some love. For me, out of all the summer camp slasher movies, this is the one that feels the most like a campfire story. Very good video sir :)
House on Sorority Row is awesome! Much better than I expected...just watched it! My mom is a big "Days of our Lives fan" so she'll think Eileen Davidson's role in this is hilarious
Great list, Daniel! I especially love "The Funhouse." Another one I have a lot of fun with is "Slaughter High," not a really great film, but fun and gruesome with the kills.
Your taste is so great. I'm glad you mentioned rare gems like Just Before Dawn, Final Exam and Alone In the Dark. I love all the films you mentioned here. I'd even add Happy Birthday to Me, Visiting Hours, Hospital Massacre, The Prawler, Graduation Day, Tenebre
I was part of a test audience for Visiting Hours ( before they called it that ) , I was a wee bit disappointed that they cut out a scene where the killer does the camera work, it sets up her fear. All the others are great too.
You mentioned quite of a few of my favourites too. Happy Birthday, Hospital, Prowler and the BEST Tenebrae. I think I'd include Bloody Moon, as it's got some of the most fun lines ever translated into English "That phony Spanish lover, I doubt he's ever made it with a girl or lady" hehehe Eyeball too, such a great fun film.
Great list, hadn’t heard of a couple of these! Also, don’t forget that Jack Sholder not only directed Nightmare Part 2, but also my fave buddy cop movie The Hidden!
The Hidden Rocks!!! Saw it in the theater back then in my early 20s and loved it then, as I still do now. Nightmare 2 was a divergent sequel with 3 feeling like a more natural sequel and reset the course of the franchise. Somewhat maligned with fans who saw its initial release, Freddy's Revenge shows us a weird alternative direction that it could have gone, and it deserves a 2nd look by those who think that they don't care for that one. Anyone?
The Hidden is another favorite of mine, for a sci-fi movie it has an original story, plenty of suspense and action, and Kyle Maclachlan was perfect as the enigmatic FBI agent/alien. Oh and the soundtrack really rocks, too.
Glad to see someone talking about The Funhouse don't think people know about this Tobie Hooper movie. When I watch this I binge watch it along with Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Poltergeist.
Nice list. My #1 favorite slasher is 1981's Hell Night, great atmosphere, characters and ending kill. I also really love My Bloody Valentine, Happy Birthday to Me, and Popcorn.
Hell Night... found it incredibly boring. As for My Bloody Valentine & Happy BDay to Me, they had a full on theatrical release. Glenn Ford was paid at least $1 Million for Happy Bday, adjust that for inflation, a pretty high pay day for a slasher. --- Popcorn, love it, but it was a flop at the time, but it did have a theatrical release as well. Heck, I remember commercials playing for it during The Price is Right. Lol.
Yes! Mine, too. And The Legacy and The Changeling. Also, When Michael Calls .(has an alternate title, too. Can’t remember… but it starred Michael Douglas and Elizabeth Ashley)
I've seen all but two of these (Night Screams and Cemetery of Terror). Three I saw for the first time last year (Madman, House on Sorority Row, The Initiation). The Funhouse I saw on VHS back in the 80s, also reading the novelization by Dean Koontz writing as Owen West. Four of them I saw in the theater on their initial runs (Just Before Dawn, New Year's Evil, Final Exam, and Alone in the Dark). Good list.
The Funhouse... great soundtrack, straight forward plot, and a great climax between the villain and the final girl. The original House on Sorority Row... where three of the actresses were soap opera actresses (Eileen Davidson, Harley Jane Kozak.. and the final Girl.. but I don't recall her name).
Dear Lord, what are you guys smoking? Fall Break (Mutilator) has all the worst qualities a slasher can have; no atmosphere, not a single character that resembles a human being, and slow as hell. The only good thing about is the iconic tagline "By pick, by axe, bye-bye"
I've seen more of these than I figured I had. "Just Before Dawn" and "The Initiation" in particular are awesome, but my favorite of this bunch has to be "The Funhouse." I never get tired of watching that one! I still need to see "The House on Sorority Row"... and "Cemetery of Terror" looks like an absolute blast!
Good list. I’ve seen all (and mostly own) them except for Cemetery… will have to check that one out. Other lesser seen Slashers I’d recommend are Hell Night (1981), Next of Kin (1982), Humungous (1982), The Slayer (1983) and Girls Nite Out (1983)
i always loved T.A.G: The Assassination Game (1982) with Linda Hamilton & Robert Carradine it never got a Release on Bluray and some very rare unofficial dvds in some parts of the world i'm still happy i have the official VHS release u can also watch it on RUclips
Pretty awesome list. "Madman" has some of the best acting in horrifying situations I've ever seen. The characters aren't screaming their lungs out. They're quiet, shocked, and lots of open-mouthed terror (in the kitchen scene in particular).
My favorite B rated 80's slasher movies are The Funhouse, The Burning, Sleepaway Camp, Don't Go In The House, Don't Answer The Phone, and Pieces! Trust me, there are a lot of 80's horror movies that are great but some, sadly, are not so great but I do love the handpainted artwork of the movie posters.
The Fun House was a terrific movie. One of my favorite 80s horror movie. Another great horror film to checkout is called Pieces. A great college campus horror type flick
Great list! Mine would include Stagefright (1987); the aforementioned Slaughter High; and a great companion piece to just Before Dawn, The Final Terror (a handful of "before they were famous" actors in the cast); and Pranks (aka The Dorm That Dripped Blood - also starring Daphne Zuniga. So many I can't think of at the moment... once again, great list!
Cool Friday the 13th shirt! Some great choices. I remember seeing Madman with my friends. Wasn't one of the rules that you couldn't say his name, Madman Mars? Just before Dawn was a classic. I remember seeing it a long time ago. I think the ending had one of the girls survive, by sticking her hand down the killers' throat, suffocating him. Great stuff. I haven't seen Alone in The Dark. It seems to have a good cast. I'm going to have to check it out. Thanks for the videos. They're just what I need to start work!!
Slumber Party Massacre (1982) is a top favorite slasher of mine. Eyes of a Stranger and Night School (1981) are overlooked gems as well. Eyes of a Stranger makes a great double bill with John Carpenter's underseen made for TV thriller Someone's Watching Me! A more modern slasher I highly recommend is Fender Bender. Very well made.
Finally, some love for New Year's Evil! I've always loved that flick. I love that we see the guy from the jump, following him as he changes disguises and attempts to excute his plan, but we don't know who he is yet. A nice change up from the masked killer setup. Also, "He Knows You're Alone" deserves some love.
That's a terrific list of films, including one of my favorites Final Exam. That film is a perfect example of getting to know the characters so that when the killer gets them, it's tough emotionally. The only other film I might suggest is The Dorm That Dripped Blood from 1982. Impressive as a student film that got a theatrical release.
Being a huge horror fan, especially of the 70's and 80's, I've seen all of these. My favorites among these are Just before Dawn and Madman but they are all great. Night Screams is good but I could do without the weird out of place porno clips. Some even deeper cuts I'd recommend are Sorority House Massacre, Killing Spree, Death Screams, Offerings, The Oracle, and Silent Madness. All of these are available on Blu-ray (I own them all along with the ones you mentioned here). I totally agree about liking the characters. Probably why my favorite horror franchises are Nightmare on Elm Street and Child's Play. I must say that I love Madman so much more than The Burning. Madman has likable characters and unique kills. A really great cheesy hot tub scene. The Burning is good but all the characters are terrible. I either find them incredibly annoying or very dull and forgettable. Great list! Please do more of these
Just watched the Basil Rathbone Holmes movie " The hound of the Baskervilles" based on your recommendation from your Holmes video, and I was very surprised how much I enjoyed it, Im much more of a fan of the books and the Jeremy Brett series but Mr. Rathbone was a good Sherlock and I enjoyed the rest of the cast, I will say Dr. Watson was just ok to me, he seemed a bit dim sometimes, a little more than I'd prefer Dr. Watson to be, but thats a minor gripe. I really love the set pieces as well.
While I haven't seen that one of Rathbone I have seen others and he does do a great job as Holmes. Especially in the disguise area as Holmes was so good he could fool his closest friends and there were several from the Brett series that made me go Watson is blind if he can't tell that's Holmes.
Here's mine(in no oder): Mountaintop Motel Massacre, Silent Scream, Unhinged, Blood Frenzy, House of Death, Humongous, Don't Go In The Woods, Butcher Baker Nightmare Maker, The Hills Have Eyes 2(83), Mortuary.
This is a goddam excellent list! The Golden Age of the slasher is my most favorite movie period, and you nailed it with this list. Anytime movies like Final Exam and Madman get some love, I'm happy! I'd also love to see The Final Terror and Without Warning get some love.
I definitely agree, watching slashers during summertime or brighter weather feels very fitting and comforting to me. Some great choices here, especially "Madman".
Yeah, your top 3 are all real standouts. Just Before Dawn is as you say and it was a real surprise to me. Low budget but well done. The Funhouse is one of my favorites. Great atmosphere and like you said the killer situation is great. This movie is really a cut above the rest of the list. But I do love House On Sorority Row. Real suspense and just a surprisingly cool little movie.
I'm not sure how underrated/unseen or even obscure these ones are but I'd say Mortuary, Blood Rage, The Being, Curtains, Pieces and Visiting Hours just to name a few. They are must watch slasher/horror flicks as far as I'm concerned and I most certainly recommend them.
Fantastic takes! Funhouse is an all time fave. Some other (some non-slasher) 80’s gems are Winterbeast, Prom Night II (Haunting of Hamilton High), There’s Nothing Out There… too many to remember or mention
Your energy reminds me of reviews I watched as a kid on tv. Love it! The almost in your face positivity really hits that sweet note for me, and your passion is contagious! Have a like, have a comment. And, have a subscriber! =)
Great list especially stuff like Madman and The Initiation. For me I would recommend Curtains(1983), Edge of the Axe(1988), and Killer Party(1986). All are extremely entertaining, and the mystery element in Curtains and Edge is pretty strong.
Great choice having House on Sorority Row at the top, one of my faves. The Burning & My Bloody Valentine are my faves. I also love Sleepaway Camp 2 for some cheesy fun.
Over the past week, upon your recommendation I watched Funhouse, Cemetery & Sorority, all very good, I even listened to the Hysteria Continues podcast covering them. House on Sorority Row was great, I can't believe ive never seen it before! Thanks 👍
Recently discovered your channel and it’s now one of my favs! I love vintage horror and you keep digging up flicks I haven’t seen. Thank you! My dark horror heart is so happy 😈
Great list. I'm glad you mentioned Just Before Dawn and The Initiation, Madman is really good and I love The House on Sorority Row. I haven't seen New Year's Evil yet
I definitely agree with you on the point of why watchin a slasher is important. To feel a connection with the character, not just a throwaway character for a kill.
The Initiation is a Dallas movie. The "mall" is called the Dallas Market Center, it's actually a distribution center for people who own stores in malls. It's still there but anybody cannot just walk in, you have to have a badge.
Pieces and Motel Hell. Pieces is a Spanish horror film that has the voices dubbed over (it's very obvious in the film). If you can get over that then it's a pretty good movie. Lots of blood and gore
I LOVE that you want to LIKE the characters. THAT is why 80s slashers are so much better and memorable than they are today. Suspense only works when you care about the victim.
Seeing this video and reading the excellent comments has inspired me to list my favourites too. It's a little Euro-centric, but here goes, and it's subject to change as I am old and forget a lot of stuff hahaha: Tenebrae, Stagefright, Death Spa, X-Ray (Hospital Massacre), The New York Ripper, Pieces, Visiting Hours, My Bloody Valentine, Whodunnit, The House on Sorority Row.
I’ve been keeping track of all the slashers from the 80s that I’ve ever watched, for years now. I have seen all of these but Cemetery of Terror so thanks for that one! look forward to watching it
I seen 7 out of 10 love and miss the 80s remember sneaking out after 3rd period to see “The FunHouse” downtown Chicago had 6 movie theaters the Chicago theater, the state lake, the Woods, the McVickers, the Oreintal, and the united artists all in a two block radius each showing 2 to 3 movies for either .99 cents or 1.50 at the most man I truly miss the the 1980s
I swear, no matter how many movies I've watched, seems like there are always more that I've never seen or heard of. The only one here I know of is Funhouse, clearly I have more 80s horror to find and check out! Thanks for opening my eyes a bit!!
So great to see THE FUNHOUSE greeting some acknowledgment! Hands down Hopper’s best film to me. I’m old enough to have actually seen ii in its original release, twice in the theater & once at the drive-in (YES, I was a BIG fan). Unlike most the other films on your list (some of which I also saw in a theater), THE FUNHOUSE had Universal’s money behind it. Unlike some of those 15:49 other films that had limited budgets & means, THE FUNHOUSE was beautifully shot in widescreen Panavision & had a booming Dolby soundtrack (hard to believe fairly new at the time).
I'm always on the hunt for New 80s slashers I havent seen before. Some underrated favourites of mine are Moonstalker, graduation day, Iced, blood hook and one I just found on RUclips called Fatal Pulse which Also takes place in a girls sorority, it's never gotten a dvd release or been on Tubi but it's tons of Fun and deserves a Vinegar Syndrome Release!
Just Before Dawn & The Funhouse are two I like to watch every few months. Interesting characters plus plot for both there. Recently watched Without Warning which also stars Jack Palance & Martin Landau with a sci-fi horror theme going on.
The Burning, The Prowler, Intruder, Hell Night, Blood Rage, Happy Birthday To Me, Prom Night, Terror Train, My Bloody Valentine, Chopping Mall, The Slumber Party Massacre, Maniac, Maniac Cop, Pieces there are just to many
And this really obscure movie called "Killer!" which showed up on Showtime or the Movie Channel in the mid '90s. It was made in 1988 or 1989....very very low budget. I taped it on VHS and then copied it onto DVD.
Here's a bit of unknown trivia. The Funhouse was originally a novel written by Liegh Nichole's which is a pseudonym for Dean Koontz. I love both the movie and novel. The other movies rock too.👍
I look forward to New Year's every year because that means it's time to watch New Year's Evil! I've got the song in my head just thinking about it, lol.
Enjoyed watching your video, and was pleasantly surprised that you recommended both movies I love (ie Funhouse!) and ones I’ve never watched that I’ve now added to my list! Terror Train and Student Bodies also come to mind.
Absolutely agree with on you need to like your slasher movie characters and that's why certain films standout because you like them. Look at Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream, etc think of your favorite slasher and I guarantee there are several likeable characters.
Back in the 80s I got turned off by the vast amount of slackers coming out. I started avoiding them and dipped back into classics by Universal and Hammer. Now as an adult I'm going back and trying to watch what I missed. I can say Madman is one I just watched recently and loved it. We should have had a series and don't remember much talk around it in the 80s. I know people rank The Burning higher but I find that one just boring. Thanks for another great video Daniel
I've seen 5/10 of the films when my parents and I lived overseas. Most of those movies were at the video store. Like Xtro or the Boogens, but the house is very good. You got a new scribe.
I am glad Tubi has a lot of 80s horror/slasher movies. Same with RUclips
Tubi has lots of low budget, obscure gems.
Yeah Tubi introduced me to alot of 80s slasher movies I've never heard of and alot of them are good

the fun house is awesome. i use to date a girl that could have been the twin in the beginning, great movie. scared me as a kid still good today
Lol
That movie was great.
Always happy to see Madman get some love. For me, out of all the summer camp slasher movies, this is the one that feels the most like a campfire story. Very good video sir :)
I agree, at least along side Friday the 13th Part 2.
Must include Sleepaway Camp.
I just watched it last night and tubi , it was really good!
I like Justin
The girl from dawn of the dead in it.
House on Sorority Row is awesome! Much better than I expected...just watched it! My mom is a big "Days of our Lives fan" so she'll think Eileen Davidson's role in this is hilarious
The Funhouse does have great atmosphere. Quentin Tarantino talked about it in his book "Cinema Speculation."
Yes. Tobe did a great job. It's killer movie.
My favorite Tobe Hooper film and one of my favorite Dean Koontz books!
Sleep away camp was something. Especially that shocking ending 😅
🥴🥴🥴🥴
Great list, Daniel! I especially love "The Funhouse." Another one I have a lot of fun with is "Slaughter High," not a really great film, but fun and gruesome with the kills.
I like that one too! Always good to see Caroline Monroe.
Two solid movies.
The Funhouse is one of my favorite horror films of all time.
That’s awesome to hear!
Tobe Hooper was horror master.
I loved it as well!
April Fool's Day (1986) is one of my faves from the 80's.
I loved it as well!

Black Xmas is a really good movie. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it.

The ‘Funhouse’ book is also worth the read!! Dean Koontz….
No love for the Mutilator? Definitely a great regional film with likable characters and creative kills!!!!
Yes, I really enjoyed The Mutilator (Fall Break). Great choice.
That movie is an absolute treasure. It's batshit in only the best ways imaginable.
“Fall Break!” 😂

Concise, clear, enthusiastic commentary. Watching more of your stuff, now.
Great choice having House on Sorority Row at the top, one of my faves. The Burning & My Bloody Valentine are my faves. I also love Sleepaway Camp 2 for some cheesy fun.
I actually saw Final Exam in the theater, when it first came out. One of the few bonuses of being old.
So cool!
I thought for sure Tourist Trap would of made the list!
Can't be an underseen 80s slasher if you don't come out in the 80s, but one more people should see nonetheless.
@@XenogearSolid Yeah, I thought it was 80s...still exceptionally creepy though
The best list I've seen in the years I've watched reviews. The top 5 was fantastic.
Hey, thanks so much!
Over the past week, upon your recommendation I watched Funhouse, Cemetery & Sorority, all very good, I even listened to the Hysteria Continues podcast covering them. House on Sorority Row was great, I can't believe ive never seen it before! Thanks 👍
Good list, 7 out of ten I actually never saw, and I grew up in the cinema in the 80’S.
Recently discovered your channel and it’s now one of my favs! I love vintage horror and you keep digging up flicks I haven’t seen. Thank you! My dark horror heart is so happy 😈
Hey, thank you! Welcome!
Funhouse pulls at the heartstrings heavvvvy in the scene with the boy
Sleepaway camp 2 and 3 were lit
Your videos are so great. I love the endless enthusiasm. Just as entertaining as hearing Tarantino or Eli Roth talking about horror movies.
Wow, what a compliment! Thank you!
Great list. I'm glad you mentioned Just Before Dawn and The Initiation, Madman is really good and I love The House on Sorority Row. I haven't seen New Year's Evil yet
Great video and i LOVE that shirt. That's one of the best I've seen for Friday 3.
An excellent list that actually contains a handful of movies I haven’t seen yet. Nice work!
Thank you!
I definitely agree with you on the point of why watchin a slasher is important. To feel a connection with the character, not just a throwaway character for a kill.
WitchBoard was Underrated. So was Deadly Friend.
Yeah! I like those movies, especially Deadly Friend.
I have seen all of these but Cemetery of Terror so thanks for that one! look forward to watching it
That’s awesome! You must have TONS of slasher knowledge. Respect.
It also used real funhouse props which is why they are so cool!
Love love love Madman, and The House on Sorority Row was wonderfully referenced in my favourite EVER slasher film, Final Girls!
Forgot to put Intruder and The Mutilator on the list too, those are frequent rewatches in my house
I will watch them and afterwards I'll come back here to tell what I thought about them. I'm a fan of the genre.
I'm so glad I found your channel, I'm a huge horror fan and you just put me on the some great movies.
Great list…I’ve seen all but two, but was familiar with them. Definitely gets me in the mood to rewatch some. Have you ever seen “The Final Terror”?
I remember really liking 'the Initiation', but I haven't seen it in decades. I remember that I liked the music really well.
Love the score that runs over the end credits got stuck in my head for years after I heard it.
I’ve been jamming Trick or Treat 1986 lately and I love the rock n roll horror flics.
Im a massive hororhound and have seen all of these. But you pulled some GOOD deepcuts for this list. Well done my friend
Much appreciated! 🤘🏼
great list! All are hidden horror gems! I’d like to add CURTAINS which has one of the best slasher kill scene of all time.
Just Before Dawn & The Funhouse are two I like to watch every few months. Interesting characters plus plot for both there. Recently watched Without Warning which also stars Jack Palance & Martin Landau with a sci-fi horror theme going on.
All 3 you mentioned are solid movies. Palance is legend.
Love this list, got a couple of movies I want to watch now. The channel gives me so many good recommendations.
A great list, and surprisingly I own them all 😄
Same
Nice!!
A+ video!
Awesome films and explanations!
Glad you enjoyed it!
We watched My Bloody Valentine and couldn’t stop with the “Pick Your Friends” jokes; Pick Your Friends Wisely, Pick Your Friends Carefully, etc.
I'm pretty sure "New Years Evil" is the only one I've seen here.
I was hoping The Final Terror made your list.
The Funhouse was probably my favorite movie as a child.
MBV will always be my fav slasher. The unrated and uncut version that you can see is highly recommended 🖤
So glad I accidentally stumbled upon this channel. Fantastic! Thank you! 🙌
Slaughter House is one I really like. It has a great twist at the end.
Awesome list!! The Funhouse is soooo underrated!
I've seen 5/10 of the films when my parents and I lived overseas. Most of those movies were at the video store. Like Xtro or the Boogens, but the house is very good. You got a new scribe.
Graduation day & happy birthday to me both 1981 slasher movies. Both a must watch.
