Giallo has the BEST titles. Twitch of the Death Nerve, Strip Nude for your Killer, Short Night of Glass Dolls, Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key, etc.
Love that you decided to do this video. I have wanted to get more into this genre but didn't know where to start. This fixes that. I have seen Tenebrae and it is excellent! Sidenote - I got to see Goblin live last year. They showed Suspiria and played the music live during the movie. After that they played a medley of their music with scenes from different movies. And since it was in Pittsburgh, they dedicated the show to "our friend, George (Romero)." It was an experience I'll never forget!
Hey, great! Another person who likes "Tenebrae"! It is my favorite giallo as well. "Bird with Crystal Plumage" and "Cat o''Nine Tails" are also my favorites.
I am 67 and a big collector of horror! I can’t tell you how much I enjoy your channel. Every video is so enjoyable and I have learned quite a bit from watching. Just want you to know you have a big fan here in New Jersey! 👻🦇🦇Keep up the good work! I will be watching!
Great list! My personal Top 10 1: Blood and Black Lace 2: The House with the Laughing Windows 3: The Perfume of the Lady in Black 4: Deep Red 5: Don't Torture a Duckling 6: Short Night of Glass Dolls 7: What Have You Done to Solange? 8: Footprints on the Moon 9: The Case of the Scorpion's Tail 10: The Red Queen Kills Seven Times
@@cobwebschannel Yeah. It’s sometimes lumped in with gialli because it’s Argento. There’s only one scene in the film that fits the giallo paradigm, and that’s when the faceless witch cuts Susie’s throat with the switchblade. I always thought that scene was different. Probably because it’s the only kill in the film that’s not supernatural. Like she wasn’t gonna die in the barbed wire anyway. Noise control, I guess.
New subscriber here - great content! I’m into gialli this autumn and I recently watched: The strange vice of mrs Wardh, Bay of blood, The case of the scorpions tail, All the colours of the dark, The case of the bloody iris, and The forbidden photos of a woman above suspicion. Love the vibe in these! Great soundtracks also. Before this I was only familiar with Argento. (Deep Red and The Bird with the Crystal Plumage remain my favs.) Just realised that The red queen kills seven times is available here on RUclips, so that’s up next. 👍
Phenomena is one of my favorites. The actors, the unique story with insect communication, the murders, the maggot pit, and surprises, made this one worth watching again and again. You have a great list that you probably could have made a top 20 giallo list.
Wonderful list Daniel !!!! Giallo is one of my favourite subgenres (Along with Slasher movies). Other Gialli I highly recommend: Una sull'altra, The House That Screamed The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh A Bay of Blood Don't Torture a Duckling The Short Night of the Glass Dolls Torso The House with Laughing Windows The Bloodstained Shadow The New York Ripper
Hi Daniel! I accidentally stumbled upon giallo movies when I was searching for Italian horror movies. Ended up loving the genre. Thanks for another awesome video!
It's always great to see lists like these, even if everyone might not agree on the choices. Hopefully, they inspire people to seek out films they haven't seen yet! I also think there are at least fifty films that are more or less equally good and could easily make a top ten list. Ten of them are: 1. Deep Red/Profondo rosso (Dario Argento; 1975) 2. The Possessed/La donna del lago (Franco Rossellini, Luigi Bazzoni; 1965) 3. Don't Torture a Duckling/Non si sevizia un paperino (Lucio Fulci; 1972) 4. The Perfume of the Lady in Black/Il profumo della signora in nero (Francesco Barilli; 1974) 5. The House with Laughing Windows/La casa dalle finestre che ridono (Pupi Avati; 1976) 6. Footprints on the Moon/Le orme (Luigi Bazzoni, Mario Fanelli; 1975) 7. The Laughing Woman/Femina Ridens (Piero Schivazappa; 1969) 8. New York Ripper/Lo squartatore di New York (Lucio Fulci; 1982) 9. Tenebre (Dario Argento; 1982) 10. Blood and Black Lace (Mario Bava; 1964) Some honorable mentions that could've made the list if I'd done it on another day (or expanded the criteria a bit): 1. Don't Look Now (Nicolas Roeg; 1973) -- Italian co-production 2. Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion (Elio Petri; 1971) 3. The Girl Who Knew Too Much (Mario Bava; 1963) 4. What Have They Done to Your Daughters? (Massimo Dallamano; 1974) 5. The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (Dario Argento; 1970) 6. Short Night of Glass Dolls (Aldo Lado; 1971) 7. The Bloodstained Butterfly (Duccio Tessari; 1971) 8. Who Saw Her Die? (Aldo Lado; 1972) 9. The Suspicious Death of a Minor (Sergio Martino; 1975) 10. All the Colors of the Dark (Sergio Martino; 1972)
Great list Daniel! I've watched around 100 gialli and your selection is quite similar to my own top 10. The actual ranking is subject to change on any given day with the exception of Tenebrae - that one's in a class of its own... Oh, and I agree Suspiria is no way a giallo due to its heavy emphasis on the supernatural. If it was one then Tenebrae would have some competition for the number one slot! 1. Tenebrae 2. Death Walks At Midnight 3. The Strange Vice Of Mrs Wardh 4. The Bird With The Crystal Plumage 5. The Fifth Cord 6. The House With Laughing Windows 7. The Case Of The Scorpion's Tail 8. The Case Of The Bloody Iris 9. Seven Blood-Stained Orchids 10. Deep Red
No Torso or House of Laughing Windows!?! Where is that unsubscribe button? 😂 Just kidding...agree all your top 10 are must see films. Giallo is such a great genre that everyone has a different top 10 list. Great video Daniel!
@@cobwebschannel very surprising, but narrowing the best Giallo down is a tough task. I'm sure it was a tough one to come up with. Keep the Giallo content coming!
Great list! Tenebre is also my #1. The Fifth Cord is in my top 5. It’s probably the most beautifully shot giallo ever in terms of cinematography and the mystery is gripping.
Tenebre would easily be my Number 1 as well. I think I actually watched Scorpion's Tail after hearing you talk about it on your old podcast, and loved it. I need to give Blade in the Dark another shot. The day I watched it I ended up having to watch it in spurts, and that's never a great way to watch anything. I will be watching Death Walks at Midnight soon. That's been on my list forever. Great video, as always. And a list that is hard to argue with. I agree with you on Suspiria as well. No one is calling Inferno or Mother of Tears a giallo, so that categorizing by some for Suspiria has always confused me, but like you said, I don't have any issue with someone considering it a giallo.
Tenebrae was my introduction to Giallo! Loved it! Still my "desert island" favorite...though several others are now up there near the very top :) Nice that you included "A Blade in the Dark" , under-appreciated imo and needs more shout-outs! Just added Severin's Opera 4K last week and Arrow's 4k of Torso to my collection today. Hopefully a Pieces 4k is in our future! Though the Grindhouse 3-disc Special Edition Blu-ray is pretty spectacular! Thanks for doing a Giallo segment! Love your Channel! 😎👍
My friend just recommended your channel and I'm here for it! You are definitely correct that Suspiria is not a giallo, even though it's directed by a guy who made a lot of gialli. LOVE your love for Tenebrae! (And the other two Argento films on there!) Aside from Argento and Bava (and maybe two or three Fulci), I was not aware of any of these directors so I just added a LOT to my movie list! Thanks!
The Killer Must Kill Again, Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I have the Key, and The New York Ripper would be in my top 10 along with many you mentioned. Great video.
Tenebrae is my favorite too! It’s SOOOO good. Such beautiful colors, great murders, coherent plot line and actually good dialogue! Completely agree with your take on it.
Solid list! I was hoping to see What have they done to Solange? And The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh on the list. One i really liked that is not highly talked about is Strip Nude for your Killer
I want to write because you are just ticking off all my favourites. I am one of those hardcore fans you mentioned earlier. Rest assured, your list is top notch. Except for your number one, we share the same favourites.
Hi Daniel. Tenebrae is great. I probably sound like a troll, -Anthony Franciosa is pronounced like 'France' instead of 'k' and he's American. Great movie. Thanks for doing such a great job on your channel. It's so engaging. I'm a 30-year filmmaker and thought I'd comment on his name since you love the movie. Happy Autumn! My favorite season, too.
I absolutely adore Blood and Black Lace. When they announced the limited edition Blu Ray. I HAD to nab it. Lots of new giallos here that I’ve not seen. Look forward to diving into more. Love the channel and the videos as always!
I think every Giallo fan would be different. It's a tough genre to narrow down a top 10. I know people who list Opera as their favorite and it didn't even make his list. Such a deep genre of quality stuff
"Death Walks On High Heels" is in my top-10, but for some reason I didn't enjoy the follow-up "Death Walks at Midnight" very much. They were made by the same director and came a year apart. Most of the cast was the same too. I absolutely love Red Queen Kills Seven Times, the main theme got stuck in my head for eternity. Some other favorites: Autopsy (super nasty and sleazy!), Torso, The Perfume of the Lady in Black, Delirium, Bloodstained Butterfly, A Lizard in a Woman's Skin, The Girl Who Knew Too Much, Blood and Black Lace, Tenebre, Bay of Blood... I forgot the rest, there are so many.
💯 Agree!! Dario Argento's TENEBRE is the Best Giallo Horror Movie Ever Made. It's quite simply a MASTERPIECE!.... Your list already has some great titles like : Blade In The Dark, Deep Red, Bird With Crystal Plumage... but these are the ones that you left out : Dario Argento's OPERA, Mario Bava's BAY OF BLOOD, Aldo Lado's WHO SAW HER DIE, Pupi Avati's HOUSE WITH THE WINDOWS THAT LAUGHED, and to give credit to other countries other than Italy for their own version of giallo is : Nicolas Roeg's DON'T LOOK NOW, and America's own giallo ALICE, SWEET ALICE
Top 10 for me: 1. What have you done to Solange? 2. Tenebre(Shadows) 3. Phenomena 4. Deep Red 5. The bird with the crystal plummage 6. Who saw her die? 7. My dear killer 8. Don't torture a duckling 9. Puzzle 10. The house with the windows that laughed Loads of other good ones as well. I've got three each by directors Luigi Bazzoni and Sergio Martino in my top 30, although they don't make the top 10.
Here is a fun factoid. This is the stuff I geek out on. Anthony Franciosa often went by Tony Franciosa. Tom Waits randomly put him in the lyric of "Going Out West" from the album Bone Machine. Subsequently, that song was used in Fight Club in the scene where they enter a bar. The only other film of his I have seen is The Swinger, It is the film where they use Ann Margret as a human paintbrush. I " "I'm goin' out west where the wind blows tall 'Cause Tony Franciosa used to date my ma"
What a BANGER of a list! So many solid picks and a few I need to check out! Tenebrae is so good! I've always loved the concept. One of the first few argento films I saw
I definitely agree with your top 3 being some of the best giallos made. I love how no matter who is putting together a top ten giallo list, you always have to give a cut-off number for Dario Argento films. Otherwise, you can end up with all Argento films. Some of my other favorites include "Four Flies On Grey Velvet", "Sleepless (aka No Ho Sonno)" and "Shadows In An Empty Room" which is a kind of action cop meets giallo mash-up.
Great list! I have always said someone who wants to start watching giallo films should start with Blood and Black Lace because it is one of the most straight forward giallis.
Thank You for making this list Daniel. Some of these films I have watched like Tenebrae and The Bird with Crystal Plumage which were excellent, looking forward to viewing the others in the coming months. The Curse of the Scorpion's Tail looks very interesting and one I probably would have missed if not for this list. 😊
My top 10 in chronological order: 1. La ragazza che sapeva troppo (The Evil Eye directed by Mario Bava 1963): the beginning of the Italian giallo. 2. Sei donne per l’assassino (Blood and Black Lace directed by Mario Bava 1964): this movie is extremely important both for the giallo and the slasher genre. First movie with the masked killer and the use of colors by Bava inspired Dario Argento for Suspiria. A masterpiece and a milestone by the Master. Mario Bava is the most underrated director of all time. 3. L’uccello dalle piume di cristallo (The Bird with the Crystal Plumage directed by Dario Argento 1970): this movie is very important because changed and improved the Italian giallo. 4. La corta notte delle bambole di vetro (Short Night of Glass Dolls directed by Aldo Lado 1971): I love this movie, so creepy. Kind of horror giallo with an eerie plot about a secret Masonic group. 5. Lo strano vizio della signora Wardh (The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh directed by Sergio Martino 1971): it’s impossible not to put a giallo with the trio Sergio Martino, George Hilton and Edwige Fenech. Great giallo. I love the scene with little cube of ice. Very brilliant. 6. Non si sevizia un paperino (Don’t torture a Duckling by Lucio Fulci 1972): the best giallo directed by Fulci. Great plot with the gorgeous Barbara Bouchet. 7. Cosa avete fatto a Solange? (What Have You Done to Solange? directed by Massimo Dallamano 1972): I love this movie but I can’t say more than this because I don’t want to spoil anything. 8. Mio caro assassino (My Dear Killer directed by Tonino Valerii 1972). I love this movie, one of the best performance by George Hilton. A creepy and sad plot about a little girl kidnapped. Sadly say that kidnapping the children often occurred in Italy back then. In my opinion this movie inspired Dario Argento for Deep Red and the blood splatter you can see when Jane got killed in Tenebrae reminds me the teacher’s death scene in My Dear Killer 9. Profondo Rosso (Deep Red directed by Dario Argento 1975): the giallo masterpiece by Argento. Impossibile not to love this movie. Impossible not to love the amazing performances by Daria Nicolodi and Clara Calamai. 10. La casa dalle finestre che ridono (The House with Laughing Windows directed by Pupi Avati 1976): creepy and with an intriguing plot. Extremely underrated but this is a great giallo.
Great list! I own all but one of these and (actually) have to watch a couple yet since picking them up, but I definitely agree with many of these titles being top tier for me. It's difficult to find a true giallo fan vs Argento fan so I usually have to find time to solo watch. Love the top tens and reviews. I'm a little more broke because of 'em.
Not sure what you'd called a Spanish giallo (perhaps an amarillo) but I love The House that Screamed. Eye in the Labyrinth had a nice twist at the end that I didn't see coming. It also had Sybil Danning in it. Another great one was What Have You Done to Solange?
My favorites: (not in order) What Have You Done to Solange, The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh, Tenebrae, Opera (if that counts?), All The Colors of the Dark,
I have Tenebre, love my Tony Franciosa! Have Suspiria, yes it is supernatural and about witches coven. Have Edwinge Fenech, Case of the Scorpions Tail. Have Argento's Opera, it is worth a mention, great movie too! I love Giallo genre, I've seen all that is mentioned, except, drum roll, please, Blood and Black Lace. I most definitely will see it. I do have Bava's, Hatchet for a Honeymoon, Stephen Forsyth, so good looking, from Canada. Dagmar Lassander, she is another favourite! Great choices, Daniel. Thank you! Have Deep Red too, I knew I almost forgot one. Plan on adding more to my Giallo collection.😊✌❤
I agree that Suspiria is not a Giallo. But with everything you just described, that brings me back to a conversation we had a couple of months ago about Maxxxine. Everything you said perfectly describes Maxxxine lol
@@cameronscott7304 see I don’t feel that way. I feel like X was the Grindhouse exploitation film of that trilogy. But Maxine was at the very least 70% Gallo.
Interesting multiple Martino & Edwige & George Hilton but no Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh - the superior movie for those 3 in my opinion. Kudos also to Ivan Rassimov a classic villain of giallo. I was happy to see a fellow Goblin fan and I hope you have gotten to see Claudio Simonetti’s band play their soundtracks live in accompaniment to the movie. I saw Demons last fall and they also did their other classics like Suspiria, Zombi, and Tenebre. My top 10 1. Deep Red 2. Short Night of the Glass Dolls 3. The Fifth Cord 4. The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh 5. A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin 6. Hatchet for the Honeymoon 7. The House With Laughing Windows 8. Torso 9. Tenebre 10. Red Queen Kills 7 Times Bird, Scorpion’s Tail, Death Walks, Blood and Black Lace in the top 20, All the Colors a little further down but solid.
The term Giallo comes from the Italian word, "YELLOW" because the horror/murder/mystery books sold in Itally were all yellow. They just coined the term "Giallo" to describe the books and that bled into calling those movies "gaillo" as well. :)
Really enjoy your channel and definitely agree, Suspiria is not a Giallo. No offence meant, but even saying there is a twist at the ending is in fact a "Spoiler".
On the gothic aspect of the giallo mentioned in Red Queen, its important to note that Bava was really into the gothic horror. Black Sunday, Kill Baby Kill, Black Sabbath, etc. I always thought that the girl who knew to much was Bava trying to modernize the gothic and to me it feels like something of an inbetween of the two genres. I'd also say it is a very stylish film though obviously in black and white. There's no film that I wish more was done in color.
Short Night of Glass Dolls is one I never hear anyone talk about. Definitely in my top ten. But Tenebrae is amazing. I think it's my number one as well. And of course Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key is a classic too!
Great list … all very worthy films. Can’t argue with No. 1, it’s a masterpiece. For giallos with a different twist, try Lizard in a Woman’s Skin and Don’t Torture a Duckling. Bava’s Twitch of the Death Nerve (aka Bay of Blood) isn’t quite a giallo, but a fine ride too. Torso has Kendall and a high creepiness factor … but I’ve always found it slow. She’s also in an unhinged offering called Spasmo. It’s obscure but worth a watch.
I understand how you might disagree with Suspiria being a Giallo, but remember it’s still a murder mystery as there is a killer in it. For me Suspiria is a Giallo but one that’s very Supernatural influenced. I go on style and feeling when it comes to Giallo’s.
Highly recommend you watch Amsterdamned. Great premise where the killer scubas through the canals to stay unseen. Also has an amazing scene where a bloody body is hung from a bridge to drag across the glass top of a tourist boat.
Couple of recommendations in case you have not seen. I know when I first got into Giallo it was overwhelming. Eyeball, the other 2 Death Walks films, Your room is a locked vice and the brilliant strange Vice of Mrs Ward. I'm with you on Martino too. My favorite Italian director and anything he does is worth a watch
Yo Daniel, you need to check out husband-wife team Helene Cattet and Bruno Forzani’s work if you haven’t already. They pay great homage to the giallo genre in their movies. Let the Corpses Tan is great!
DANIEL might find the following "gateway" films to this genre: PYRO (1964), BLOOD BATH 9 (this is a US title of an Italian film, the title of which I can't pull up to mind at the moment) Corman purchased an Italian stalker-killer-type film as a kind of "fixer-upper", filming new scenes (shot in Venice,...er, California, that is). I feel a case can be made for a couple of other films that might be US pre-giallo (aka "gateway") projects: DEMENTIA 12, and LADY IN A CAGE (probably pretty thin connection to the later Italian films, but....some crossover). In some ways, PSCHO deserves some credit for sparking this kind of psychologically-based/stylish killer-thriller genre. Sort of gave glimpses of elements that would appear more formalistically in the later Italian films in the giallo (sp?) sub-genre. I'd be curious your response to either PYRO (the lovely Martha Hyer is very stylish in this one) and//or BOOD BATH.
I guess I've never actually seen a Gallo film before and now I want to watch all the ones on your list. I think I may have turned on Blood and Black Lace once a long time ago, but I was like 12 and it was probably over my hesd so I didn't finish it. I do have a question though. A quick clip you showed I think from the No. 9 film on your list showed a woman in an elevator either being or witnessing an attack and it looked like a shot mirrored preciselyi in Brian De Palma's Dressed to Kill so is that film De Palma essentially doing an American Gallo film? It really seems to follow the ingredients livery closely as you've described them as well as his Body Double. What do you think?
In the intro I did show a clip from Dressed to Kill as an example of a non-Italian Giallo. Yes, that movie, and a lot of his work, is an homage to Giallo.
Pupi Avati’s “L’arcano Incantatore” The Arcane Sorcerer” or “Mysterious Enchanter”. This is a beautifully crafted movie, with an extremely handsome actor, gorgeous musical score and a “pull the rug out from under you” finale. Atmospheric, original and damn creepy. Better than “House of Laughing Windows” which was also fantastic
Been a fan of this genre for years ,watched dozens of them and still there are many undiscovered gems. My list is kinda boring, consisting the "usual suspects". Mario Bava's Bay of Blood (Twitch of the Death Nerve) is probably my favorite italian horror/crime film, but it's more of a slasher than a giallo, so the ten are: 10) My Dear Killer 09) The Red Queen Kills 7 Times 08) Torso 07) What Have They Done To Solange? 06) The Fifth Cord 05) Tenebrae 04) The House With The Laughing Windows 03) Don't Torture A Duckling 02) The Strange Vice of Mrs Wardh 01) Deep Red
Personally SUSPIRIA for me will be THE ultimate giallo film! In fact, that was my introduction to the subgenre as a teen... and still in my Top 💯 Favorite Films of All Time!
Is any movie better than Tenebre? It's become my most rewatched Argento movie and one of my top 15 favorite movies of all time. By the way, this is one movie that the 4K upgrade is absolutely worth it. It rocks. When you were talking about The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, it made think that a top ten horror directorial debuts would be a fun video. You may have already seen these but if you haven't, The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave is by the same director who made The Red Queen Kills Seven Times and is definitely worth checking out. One film that would definitely be in my top five giallo that is a must watch is What Have You Done to Solange?. It's one of my all time favorite movies.
I can't remember if it was The Case of the Bloody Iris or The Strange Vice of Mrs Wardh that I saw first around ten years ago, but I am so happy I got into this genre of film and wish I had sooner! And I have to thank Pieces and Inferno for opening the door from European slashers into the world of psychosexual cinema!
x Watched The Dunwich Horror, great movie! o Sandra Dee was very effective as the passive victim! o The isolation of the strange house that Wilber lived in was very intriguing. o It was also intriguing hearing the locals gossip about the history of the Whateley family from their perspective, Nurse Cora (played by Talia Shire) told the friend Elizabeth such an intriguing story about "Weird Wilber" and how their house was like a haunted house. o I thought the effect of the portal opening (?) the first time, with only glimpses of the scenes of characters in it, was the most effective as it allowed there to be more mystery. o The flashing changing colors on the screen when "The Old Ones" was very original! x Watched Gidget, great movie! o The set-up for a type of dreamy surfing story was amazing, would love to go surfing for the summer in the exact same set-up! o Loved all the classic set pieces and cars, everything on the movie looked classic and pretty! o Another genius plot point was the Luau! † At Doane University, we used to have a yearly Luau on campus, such a unique and memorable time o Sandra Dee is an absolute phenomena in the role, she brings so much charisma, fun, charm, and romance to movie! † She is a director's dream for a lead role! x The Sandra Dee Double Feature (The Dunwich Horror + Gidget) is a total superwinner, LOVE IT! x On a side note...there is a tv series about Satanic Panic that is going to be released on October 18th called Hysteria!, it has Bruce Campbell as a Guest Star. x Also, there are some awesome horror movie trailers for The Front Room and The Substance! x I am moving Hitman and Cape Fear to November (Noirvember) x I am doing Wild Vehicles Double Feature with Maximum Overdrive then Runaway Train tomorrow night on the 24th. o I am going to play the music video "Maximum Overdrive" by 2 Unlimited before Maximum Overdrive and play the song "Runaway Train" by Soul Asylum after Runaway Train. o I remember seeing Maximum Overdrive on one of your other videos. x I added The Bird With the Crystal Plummage, The Case of the Scorpion's Tale, and Tenebrae to my January Watchlist, I am moving around a lot of movies so it is likely to be for an earlier Watchlist. x A morbid story for you...I saw two of those spectre cats this week. o One was a black cat and I buried in the area where I bury the dead animals. o Then there was one spectre cat that wasn't dead!?! † It certainly looked dead but then it was moving and making these strange gutteral sounds. † Even when it seemed dead I put it in the hole that I dug and it all of a sudden started to move again! † I all of a sudden became a Guy Carrell and was totally paranoid of burying it alive...it sat there three days before I was able to put it in the hole and be 100% certain it was dead (that is, if it really ever existed...)
I think it's fair to call Suspiria a giallo if All the Colours of the Dark can be considered one. Regardless, they're both amazing films! I haven't seen everything on this list, so I definitely have some catching up to do!
Giallo has the BEST titles. Twitch of the Death Nerve, Strip Nude for your Killer, Short Night of Glass Dolls, Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key, etc.

Other Gialli I highly recommend:
Una sull'altra,
The House That Screamed
The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh
A Bay of Blood
Don't Torture a Duckling
The Short Night of the Glass Dolls
Torso
The House with Laughing Windows
The Bloodstained Shadow
The New York Ripper
Great list, thanks!!
Tenebre is definitely No. 1, but Strange Vice of Mrs Wardh is my number 2! Love the video, would a top 10 Mummy movies video be on the cards..?
Hi Daniel! I accidentally stumbled upon giallo movies when I was searching for Italian horror movies. Ended up loving the genre. Thanks for another awesome video!
Hey, thank you!
It's always great to see lists like these, even if everyone might not agree on the choices. Hopefully, they inspire people to seek out films they haven't seen yet! I also think there are at least fifty films that are more or less equally good and could easily make a top ten list.
Ten of them are:
1. Deep Red/Profondo rosso (Dario Argento; 1975)
2. The Possessed/La donna del lago (Franco Rossellini, Luigi Bazzoni; 1965)
3. Don't Torture a Duckling/Non si sevizia un paperino (Lucio Fulci; 1972)
4. The Perfume of the Lady in Black/Il profumo della signora in nero (Francesco Barilli; 1974)
5. The House with Laughing Windows/La casa dalle finestre che ridono (Pupi Avati; 1976)
6. Footprints on the Moon/Le orme (Luigi Bazzoni, Mario Fanelli; 1975)
7. The Laughing Woman/Femina Ridens (Piero Schivazappa; 1969)
8. New York Ripper/Lo squartatore di New York (Lucio Fulci; 1982)
9. Tenebre (Dario Argento; 1982)
10. Blood and Black Lace (Mario Bava; 1964)
Some honorable mentions that could've made the list if I'd done it on another day (or expanded the criteria a bit):
1. Don't Look Now (Nicolas Roeg; 1973) -- Italian co-production
2. Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion (Elio Petri; 1971)
3. The Girl Who Knew Too Much (Mario Bava; 1963)
4. What Have They Done to Your Daughters? (Massimo Dallamano; 1974)
5. The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (Dario Argento; 1970)
6. Short Night of Glass Dolls (Aldo Lado; 1971)
7. The Bloodstained Butterfly (Duccio Tessari; 1971)
8. Who Saw Her Die? (Aldo Lado; 1972)
9. The Suspicious Death of a Minor (Sergio Martino; 1975)
1. Tenebrae
2. Death Walks At Midnight
3. The Strange Vice Of Mrs Wardh
4. The Bird With The Crystal Plumage
5. The Fifth Cord
6. The House With Laughing Windows
7. The Case Of The Scorpion's Tail
8. The Case Of The Bloody Iris
9. Seven Blood-Stained Orchids
10. Deep Red
I loved this! I'm a big fan of Argento and Bava but never dug much deeper so there are some here I'll check out for sure.
Thanks so much for your list. Your reviews are so heartfelt, earnest, and driven
No Torso or House of Laughing Windows!?! Where is that unsubscribe button? 😂 Just kidding...agree all your top 10 are must see films. Giallo is such a great genre that everyone has a different top 10 list. Great video Daniel!
Yes! Torso is another great one!
Thanks! I have seen those 2, just didn’t make my list.
@@cobwebschannel very surprising, but narrowing the best Giallo down is a tough task. I'm sure it was a tough one to come up with. Keep the Giallo content coming!
Yes, "House of the Laughing Windows" is a top ten for me.
@@cayoooga that ending!!
Great list! Tenebre is also my #1. The Fifth Cord is in my top 5. It’s probably the most beautifully shot giallo ever in terms of cinematography and the mystery is gripping.
What Have You Done to Solange (1972). Like that one.
Thanks!
Thanks for touching on these movies I am addicted to them.I did see Tenebrae and that lead to others
The Killer Must Kill Again, Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I have the Key, and The New York Ripper would be in my top 10 along with many you mentioned. Great video.
Your Vice etc is my favourite movie title EVER!
@@ericjourdain892What about The Slasher Is The Sex Maniac? 😄 A great little giallo movie (aka So Sweet, So Dead)
Glad to see so many people praising House With Laughing Windows. Pure classic Giallo.
I like to throw out Slaughter Hotel 1971 as one of my favorites.
Rosalba Neri 😍
Tenebrae is my favorite too! It’s SOOOO good. Such beautiful colors, great murders, coherent plot line and actually good dialogue! Completely agree with your take on it.
Solid list! I was hoping to see What have they done to Solange? And The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh on the list. One i really liked that is not highly talked about is Strip Nude for your Killer
@@rythehorrorguy2851 I commented the same on Solange and Mrs Ward too. 2 great ones
Anything Edwige and I'm happy.
Nice list. All films in it are worthy. Have them all and watched them many times. My order would be different but otherwise a solid list.
Top 10 for me:
1. What have you done to Solange?
2. Tenebre(Shadows)
3. Phenomena
4. Deep Red
5. The bird with the crystal plummage
6. Who saw her die?
7. My dear killer
8. Don't torture a duckling
9. Puzzle
10. The house with the windows that laughed
Loads of other good ones as well.
"
"I'm goin' out west where the wind blows tall
'Cause Tony Franciosa used to date my ma"
What a BANGER of a list! So many solid picks and a few I need to check out! Tenebrae is so good! I've always loved the concept. One of the first few argento films I saw
No Don't Torture A Duckling? That's a freaking amazing film.
Also I have a soft spot for What Have You Done to Solange?
Some really deep cuts on this list, bravo!
*"Sleepless" ( Original Title : "Non Ho Sonno" ) has another great main theme composed by GOBLIN.* ⬅🎸
@@NicholasCorvin I agree. It's one of the best Argento/Goblin themes.
Thanks for the awesome list, I am just getting started and sucked into the giallo genre so now I can start here with your list
Great list! I have always said someone who wants to start watching giallo films should start with Blood and Black Lace because it is one of the most straight forward giallis.
dude. greats picks!
There's always time for G-I-A-L-L-O.
Tenebrae was my very first giallo I've ever seen. I was 15 and loved it from the first moment. Since then I never forgotten Dario Argento ❤
My top 10 in chronological order:
In my opinion this movie inspired Dario Argento for Deep Red and the blood splatter you can see when Jane got killed in Tenebrae reminds me the teacher’s death scene in My Dear Killer
1) thanks for the topic, hard for an American or a non- giallo-centric expert to rate.
2) love your enerygy❤❤❤
The House with Laughing Windows (1976) dir. Pupi Avati is another good one. 👍🏽
Yea agree 100 percent. Seems to fly under people's radar, but would be in my top 10 easy
A+ video!
LOVE IT! Awesome-looking movies and really great to hear more about the intriguing genre!
Amazing top 10 horror film video Daniel.
I’ve only seen the bird with crystal plumage-excited to see all of these others!
Very respectable list. One of my favorites is The Bloodstained Shadow. Very under seen. It’s in the new the latest Forgotten Gialli set.
Not sure what you'd called a Spanish giallo (perhaps an amarillo) but I love The House that Screamed. Eye in the Labyrinth had a nice twist at the end that I didn't see coming. It also had Sybil Danning in it. Another great one was What Have You Done to Solange?
Just watched "Death Walks at Midnight" and you nailed it. Fun movie with a great lead performance.
I'm certainly not a Giallo expert by any means, but Tenebrae is my gold standard. Great list!
My favorites: (not in order) What Have You Done to Solange, The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh, Tenebrae, Opera (if that counts?), All The Colors of the Dark,
Great list! Two others I would recommend for giallo fans are THE STRANGE VICE OF MRS. WARDH and WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO SOLANGE.
I wish Maxxine had leaned more into the Giallo but it's more of an exploitation flick.
@@cameronscott7304 see I don’t feel that way. I feel like X was the Grindhouse exploitation film of that trilogy. But Maxine was at the very least 70% Gallo.
Yes, but Maxxxine wasn't scary at all unlike these Giallo films
@@irina1296 I don’t consider any of these on this list scary at all lol
@@MeanJoeGrizzly I do. At least some of them. Modern-day horror films lost the main thing. They don't scare anymore unlike older films
i love the duo George Hilton and Edwige Fenech
And with Sergio Martino in the directors chair.
Iconic
Great video! I totally agree with your number 1!
Thank you!
My top 10
1. Deep Red
2. Short Night of the Glass Dolls
3. The Fifth Cord
4. The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh
5. A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin
6. Hatchet for the Honeymoon
7. The House With Laughing Windows
8. Torso
9. Tenebre
10. Red Queen Kills 7 Times
Bird, Scorpion’s Tail, Death Walks, Blood and Black Lace in the top 20, All the Colors a little further down but solid.
Suspiria as much as I love it is not a giallo, Blood And Black Lace is superb, I didnt even know that many colours existed before I saw it lol
The JAWS hat is everything!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈
I have yet to see a Giallo! Looks like I have a great place to start!
Thanks for this! I'm excited to watch Scorpions Tail and Death walks at night, as well as revisit Tenebrae (that score! 😍)
There’s always room for giall-o! 😀
I understand how you might disagree with Suspiria being a Giallo, but remember it’s still a murder mystery as there is a killer in it.
For me Suspiria is a Giallo but one that’s very Supernatural influenced.
I go on style and feeling when it comes to Giallo’s.
Tenebrae is my favorite Argento and probably my favorite giallo. It is perfection.
Totally!
Deep Red is my fave. David Hemmings actually used to live in the tiny town in England where I live! Also great in blow up ❤
What's the movie at 1:38? I remember seeing a clip of it a while ago, and I'm curious about watching the whole thing.
Tony Franciosa (Fran-Chee-oh-sah) was a TV actor mostly during the sixties and seventies. He was also Matt Helm on the TV show.
Giallo is the best. Thanks for the video.
I haven’t seen the other Death Walks films, but I have seen those others. Thanks for watching!
Yo Daniel, you need to check out husband-wife team Helene Cattet and Bruno Forzani’s work if you haven’t already. They pay great homage to the giallo genre in their movies. Let the Corpses Tan is great!
Just discovered your channel. Great stuff! Really enjoyed this one. You have a new subscriber👍🏼
@@robertjewell9727 Tubi has a very good amount of Giallo
Ooo, can I suggest a Giallo to watch?
Please do!
Heres two, made by the same director:
Sonno Profondo (2013)
Francesca (2015)
Francesca is my favorite
Pupi Avati’s “L’arcano Incantatore” The Arcane Sorcerer” or “Mysterious Enchanter”. This is a beautifully crafted movie, with an extremely handsome actor, gorgeous musical score and a “pull the rug out from under you” finale. Atmospheric, original and damn creepy. Better than “House of Laughing Windows” which was also fantastic
Been a fan of this genre for years ,watched dozens of them and still there are many undiscovered gems. My list is kinda boring, consisting the "usual suspects". Mario Bava's Bay of Blood (Twitch of the Death Nerve) is probably my favorite italian horror/crime film, but it's more of a slasher than a giallo, so the ten are:
10) My Dear Killer
09) The Red Queen Kills 7 Times
08) Torso
07) What Have They Done To Solange?
06) The Fifth Cord
05) Tenebrae
04) The House With The Laughing Windows
03) Don't Torture A Duckling
02) The Strange Vice of Mrs Wardh
01) Deep Red
Yeeeeees. I’ve been patiently waiting for this 😄
Personally SUSPIRIA for me will be THE ultimate giallo film! In fact, that was my introduction to the subgenre as a teen... and still in my Top 💯 Favorite Films of All Time!
Daniel is doing the Lord's work. We thank Daniel for his service to our country.
Nothing is too good for the US of A 🫡
Is any movie better than Tenebre?
† At Doane University, we used to have a yearly Luau on campus, such a unique and memorable time
o Sandra Dee is an absolute phenomena in the role, she brings so much charisma, fun, charm, and romance to movie!
† She is a director's dream for a lead role!
x The Sandra Dee Double Feature (The Dunwich Horror + Gidget) is a total superwinner, LOVE IT!
x On a side note...there is a tv series about Satanic Panic that is going to be released on October 18th called Hysteria!, it has Bruce Campbell as a Guest Star.
x Also, there are some awesome horror movie trailers for The Front Room and The Substance!
x I am moving Hitman and Cape Fear to November (Noirvember)
x I am doing Wild Vehicles Double Feature with Maximum Overdrive then Runaway Train tomorrow night on the 24th.
o I am going to play the music video "Maximum Overdrive" by 2 Unlimited before Maximum Overdrive and play the song "Runaway Train" by Soul Asylum after Runaway Train.
o I remember seeing Maximum Overdrive on one of your other videos.
x I added The Bird With the Crystal Plummage, The Case of the Scorpion's Tale, and Tenebrae to my January Watchlist, I am moving around a lot of movies so it is likely to be for an earlier Watchlist.
x A morbid story for you...I saw two of those spectre cats this week.
o One was a black cat and I buried in the area where I bury the dead animals.
o Then there was one spectre cat that wasn't dead!?!

Tony Franciosa was a great actor. Check him out in Rio Conchos and Across 110th Street
