When I found out that Runaway Train was a Cannon movie my jaw dropped. It is action, but has no sign of cheese, camp, and it's almost artsy, like 1993's Fugitive or a Michael Mann flick.
My mom worked at a video store for a while in the eighties. This shit gave me flashbacks. There was a big console television in the middle of the store with the vcr hooked up to it.And I would watch movies for her entire shift. I still have the Cyborg comic book that came with the vhs release
Turning 3 in 1980, I was too young to see these films when they came out, but I do remember going to the video shop with my mum, where she would pick out some sort of action film, and I think everything on this list at some point!! Thank you for taking me back to those childhood days of being a small child in the video shop, with dozens of Chuck Norrisses looking down on me :)
Hi Daniel! I grew up in the 70s and 80s, and wow, those Cannon movies were a wild ride. Couple of my favs from your list are Lifeforce and Blood Sport.
I (like most people) only like & watch Lifeforce just simply for the butt bare assed NAKED alien vampiric energy sucking space woman HERSELF & VIRTUALLY NOTHING ASS ELSE okay @grey_wulf.
LIFEFORCE is firkin amazeballs! A masterpiece of total insanity. One of the most underrated movies ever made. I'd add Missing in Action, Delta Force, 52 Pickup, Death Wish 3, Kickboxer, Murphy's law.
Lifeforce was also edited so the British version was different from the America version. Some scenes were in one but not the other. Not sure if they ever released a version with all the scenes in it.
My new favorite movie channel. Rarely is someone so intelligent ALSO so positive. Your enthusiasm is infectious. Gonna try to watch all of the “lesser known 80s creature features” with my sons this summer. Already did (and loved) The Brain.
Love this so much! Last summer, my friends and I did a dusk to dawn Cannon marathon at a local theater. We started with Cyborg, finished with my personal favorite Cannon movie The Delta Force, and packed it with all of the bonkers Cannon goodness in between. Great video!!!
Runaway Train was part of that short lived period where Golan and Globus backed either established or up and coming filmmakers and for the most part stayed out of the way as long as the films didn’t go over budget. They were “package” flicks, where theaters had to book them if they wanted to get the new Chuck Norris or the new Bronson. Other good ones from that era are “Barfly” and “That Championship Season.” Any studio besides Cannon puts out those two, and they’d have been award show darlings.
My top 3 are probably Bloodsport, The Last American Virgin, and Revenge of the Ninja. I agree that 10 to Midnight is better than any of the Death Wish films.
You're right about the Patrick Bateman comparison in 10 to Midnight. It's been decades since I saw the film (during its original theatrical release!), but after seeing your edits from it, I have to wonder if 10 to Midnight inspired both Ellis' novel and Harron's film.
My personal favorite from The Cannon Group is A Cry in the Dark (1988) with Meryl Streep and Sam Neill. It’s based on the true story of Lindy Chamberlain, whose baby was killled by a dingo in Australia and the injustice she and her husband Michael suffered until their ultimate acquittals.
As always what makes this channel so unique and essential is that Daniel goes the extra mile to cover films nobody else on RUclips does or even knows or cares about. In my 20’s in the 1980’s you would have never caught me seeing any Cannon product. I was such a film snob, but all was not lost as now I love seeing all this cheesy crud and it’s not even nostalgia driving it! I think it’s because unlike action movies made nowadays the Cannon balls from the 80’s are not so self-referential, they are just solid action movies without pretension or ass wipes from other movies the directors grew up watching on cable. THESE are those original movies that defined cable! It’s where it all started!
I saw 10 to Midnight because mostly because I like Andrew Stevens, and Lisa Eilbacher, who played Charles Bronson's daughter. And I found myself liking it, and really liking Charles Bronson as well. I think it's the first movie that I saw him in.
10 to Midnight and Lifeforce two definite favorites, And now I have to watch Invasion USA because Richard Lynch was always great at playing the villain! Love your channel btw
Just started watching your channel and really enjoy the energy you bring! This list included 10 to Midnight - that I thought I remembered as Angel, because of the serial killer. I quite enjoy Angel but it didn't quite match up with what I remembered. Please keep in mind that my first time watching was over 30 years ago when I was around 12 spending my first summer far away from home, living at my aunt and uncle's learning the local culture of a small town with my cousins and that included renting VHS tapes at a small convenience/video rental store - likely called the Red Rooster where I would also try slushies (slurpees) for the first time.
It wouldn't be a great summer without discussing Cannon in all it's glory! Well done, sir. I kind of love them all! Grocery store terrorist: "Man, I'll blow this whole place up!" Cobra: "Go ahead...I don't shop here."
Loved Cannon films. I’m lucky to have seen all these films you listed in the theatre back in the 80’s. The film GYMKATA feels like a cannon film, but it was MGM.
This was a great video. I have so many memories of going to the local shop to rent the latest vhs releases from this era. I'm 50 so this was basically my childhood/teenage years home entertainment. Bloodsport is also a favourite of mine and I just re-watched Lifeforce last week as I hadn't seen it in ages. Runaway Train is also a belter and any of the ninja/martial arts fests they made. My dad also loved Chuck Norris so we watched as many of those as we could. Just thought I'd also mention that I'm a woman and I still love all of these films, even the crappy looking ones with hilarious storylines and special effects. To me that's added enjoyment! 🤣 So nostalgic.
That's actually a great list. Kudos for including Dangerously Close, which I think is criminally underrated. Cobra was actually a Warner Bros production, which only has Cannon credited as part of a deal to let Stallone make Cobra before Over The Top, when Cannon had the rights to his next picture after Rambo II and Rocky IV. They had nothing to do with the film's production, although in many ways it does resemble a Cannon film.
While you couldn't pay me to watch most of these movies, I LOVE the way you love them so enthusiastically! That just tickles the hell out of me. You like what you like, right? The exceptions for me are, Runaway Train. Always loved that one. Same with Lifeforce. I have problems with TCM 2, but I think it's an important film, anyway. Good video.
Definitely agree with your number one pic, bloodsport was my favorite movie when I was a kid, just recently picked up the 4K and if you’re that big of a fan of the movie, it’s well worth the upgrade
Lifeforce is such a quirky, unique film. Part Alien, part adventure movie, part zombie, part vampire movie. It's not scary at all, but it's definitely a memorable piece of science fiction. And that score? Chef's kiss.
TCM2 is a perfect sequel. Man you're cranking out the videos these days! Make sure you're following your own advice and enjoying yourself. Peace, love, and 10/10 fricheks
Lifeforce is a film I grew up with starting at age 16 from VHS to DVD to Blu-ray! It was also my introduction to Tobe Hooper's work (RIP) before I saw his earlier movies.
in 1989 my best friend at school had a huge collection of videos and me and another friend would 'bunk off' school and stay in his house watching them all day. It seems that most of these Cannon videos were in his collection. I guess they were a company making films for 80's kids. That Cobra cover always looked so cool to me. Runaway train was an excellent movie when I first watched it. IDK if it aged well though.
From space mutants to Chuck Norris, Cannon was AMAZING in the 80s! It's so hard to narrow their filmography down to 15. I love this video though. Keep doing your thing, Cobweb!
In the mid-80's my father was really into the Cannon type films; we rented a lot of them and I have a soft spot for them to this day. I don't think I saw "Invasion USA" but saw other films, not from Cannon, that were similar like "The Exterminator" and fondly remember them as well. I might not feel that way today but I'd have to see them again. A major 'win' at the time was "Lifeforce," which I enjoy every year around Halloween. Bonkers film.
Andrew Stevens did however play an entertaining and wacky , obsessed stalker of a news reporter played by Morgan Fairchild, in 1982s guilty pleasure, and cable mainstay at the time The Seduction.
My mom used the American Ninja movie to make my ninja Halloween costume, won first prize for 2 years in a row, until I grew out of it!! Thank you for reminding me of that memory!!!
I though Dudikoff was hilarious in Batchelor Party with Tom Hanks. Especially the scene where he's working as a waiter and is grossing out the customers trying to order. And the fact that he can't even read half the words on the menu. "We got veal, veal par...par...what's this word?"
I´m glad Cyborg was on the list. I love that movie and my brother had a VHS copy in the late 80´s so it´s good memories. I also love how the 80´s imagine the apocalypse/future with a dying planet/fantasy etc. You should do a second list because Cannon Group released so many movies. Another favourite for me is The Barbarians. My brother also had that movie on a VHS.
I've seen so many of these movies (not quite all) and own at least 3, Over the Top, Invasion USA, Lifeforce. My grandfather loved movies when I was growing up, so I saw most of these before I hit double digits in age. I also love and own Masters of the Universe. I've been looking for Avenging Force, as I liked that one.
Death Wish 3 had it all. Charles Bronson, Riveting script, inspiring acting, The Giggler, mail ordered firepower, Bill S Preston esq, Ed Lauter repeatedly calling Bronson “Dude”, Bronson’s love of Chicken for dinner, punk baiting with a Cadillac, World War 2 machine guns, ice cream and cameras, etc. Best Cannon film!
"They killed The Giggler man, THEY KILLED THE GIGGLER" and then the leader of the gang responds very casually with: "He had no bussiness doing that, none!" LOL
AWESOME! Takes me back to my childhood....love Bloodsport! Hey by the way what's that mask in the background? Looks familiar but can't seem to point it out!!!! Help me out!
I saw "Over the Top" at the cinema. It is awesome! It has one of my fave quotes: "I drive trucks and break arms, it's what I like to do and what I do hest"
I love Cannon films and there just isn't anyway I can rank them. Bloodsport would probably be my number if I had to choose. I hadn't ever heard of Avenging Force so I had to watch it last night. What an awesome movie, that jumped into my top 10 for sure.
I was born in the 90s but grew up with reruns of death wish series and missing in action. Of course Cobra is one of my favorite Stallone films and Bloodsport for Van Damme.
TCM2 is one of my favorite horror-comedies, partly because it's so batshit crazypants, partly because the entire cast goes for full contact and full commitment, and partly because it features one of the best soundtracks of its era: Concrete Blonde, the Cramps, Oingo Boingo, Timbuk 3, and more. When it comes to great "alternative music" 80s film soundtracks, only Repo Man exceeds TCM2.
I had to go back to the comments of this video to say : thank you ! I'm currently watching avenging force (wich was kind of hard to find because it is labeled as american ninja 2 in France) and I'm having a great time, very cool action movie.
This comment is going to date me. But I hadn't heard the name Michael Dudikoff for decades. And I could hear the sax from "Careless Whispers" when I did. I have not seen any of his movies. But I had a huge crush on him when he was doing the TV show "Cobra". For many years I avoided movies that I thought might be too violent. However, as the years have gone by, for better or for worse, I've toughened up when it comes to bloody violence. Listening to your reviews I think maybe it's time I become familiar with some of my old crush's movies from the '80s.
Bloodsport is absolutely my favorite Van Damme movie and probably my favorite Cannon film. But Kickboxer gets high marks, too. That dance scene alone is worth the price of admission.
My Personal Favorites 15.) 10 to Midnight 14.) Missing In Action 13.) 52 Pickup 12.) Bloodsport 11.) Delta Force 10.) Firewalker 9.)Revenge of the Ninja 8.) Over the Top 7.) American Ninja 6.) Barfly 5.) Love Streams 4.) Death Wish 3 3.) Lifeforce 2.) Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 1.) Runaway Train 🚉
Recently discovered your channel and love what you are doing, keep them coming! Haven't seen any of these so plenty added for the watchlist! Except TCM2... I've tried to watch it twice and turned off both times. Love the original way too much.
I was 10 when Bloodsport came out - and I remember my friends down the street rented it - and it completely blew our prepubescent minds apart. It was as if somebody cracked our heads opened and put every cool thing we wanted to see in a movie in this VHS tape. By the time they're glueing broken glass to their knuckles, I was on the verge of full black out due to the amount of awesomeness we were seeing. I spent a year legitimately training to do a full split after seeing this movie.
There is no broken glas on the knuckles in bloodsport but there is another van damme movie tho , kickboxer is the movie where they glue broken glas to their knuckles
PRETTY AWESOME LIST! Dennis Hopper was hilarious in Chainsaw 2! That movie had to inspire Rob Zombie! Some random thoughts...Red Scorpion was underrated when you pair it with The Gods must be Crazy. It was an edit away from being a genre classic. And the earlier Ninja films were sooo entertaining! Franco Nero was a badass way before Die Hard 2. You have to see 52 Pickup just because Roy Schider kind of outlines Lance Henricksons' role in Hard Target. But my all-time guilty pleasure is American Ninja 2. That barfight was like a GI Joe cartoon come to life! Rest in Power Steve James! You filled the void left by Woody Strode until Wesley took the torch !
Love so many on this list. And you introduced me to a few I need to see. Cobra...man, I remember catching that after ECW Wrestling on UPN in...1999? It started at midnight and I couldn't stop watching it. I immediately called my friends and told them all about it. That custom license plate "AWSUM50..." And Blood Sport is incredible. Definitely the best Cannon movie for me as well.
52 Pick Up! A crazy, crazy, crazy thriller! Directed by John Frankenheimer, written by Elmore Leonard, starring Roy Scheider, Anne Margaret and a scary, scary Clarence Williams III. It's a Quinten Tarantino movie before Tarantino. This one, Runaway Train and Street Smart (the reason Christopher Reeves made Superman IV) are Cannon's Criteria Collection! Hell, Runaway Train was nominated for an Academy Award!
Cannon films are some of the best ever! People can watch their! Movies like Avatar etc. But I'll take a Cannon film any day! Especially with Bronson and Chuck Norris! I will also add if critics hate it! I love it! And Chuck is the man!
Cobra was my jam when I was a teenager. I remember when I finally saw it again years later as an adult and I realized just how ridiculous the movie is. My love for it grew exponentially. I'm a sucker for over the top 80s B movies.
Much as I love Texas Chain Saw II (after ten years of silence, the buzz is BACK!), my favorite films from Cannon are Runaway Train and Street Smart, because I don't have to apologize for them being cheesy b-films. They're legitimately good. I don't really like it, but Cry in the Dark with Meryl Streep was a Cannon film ("Dingoes ate my baby!"). I haven't seen Cassavetes's Love Streams, but that's a film that a lot of critics loved. It was from Cannon, too. I seem to remember Highlander being tangentially a Cannon film, as well, but that film has a LOT of financial partners, so I have no idea who it really belongs to.

10 to Midnight is so great. Gene Davis gives a fantastic portrayal of a true creep. On par with Wings Hauser in Vice Squad, another B-movie classic!
Btw you were thinking of Andrew Stevens in the The Seduction -- which is yet another great performance as a psychotic creep..
It is all good, bro. Man, i have been watching this movie since i was a kid. Always freaked me TF out.
He was Actor Brad Davis' from Midnight Express, Brother.
sorry man, agree to disagree, "enter the ninja" & "revenge of the ninja" are much better than ninja 3.

I love all the cannon movies especially when the logo comes on n cannon films was like marvel studios in the 80s lol 🙏😎♥️♥️♥️♥️
I love Cobra, Masters of the Universe & TCM 2 ! xx
I love Over the Top! You also have Kenny Loggins with the soundtrack! "Meet me halfway, across the sky"
"There is no 2nd place...2nd place is crap!!!"
Winner takes it all, loser takes the fall!!
"Winner takes it alllll loser takes a falll Fight to the beginning of the eeeend"
AWESOME! Takes me back to my childhood....love Bloodsport! Hey by the way what's that mask in the background? Looks familiar but can't seem to point it out!!!! Help me out!
Some great fun movies there. I've seen nearly all of them numerous times but I hadn't seen 10 to midnight until recently and that was great too.
Invasion USA is my Christmas movie, above Die Hard. Thanks for including this one! It’s time… please for a New Year’s Evil Watch party. My NYE jam!
Great list, with a couple of nice surprises (Runaway Train and Dangerously Close)
Personally, I would've included 52 Pick-Up, but that's just me.
The ending of Runaway Train has to be one of the best every filmed with Voight standing on top of the train leaning into the wind.
I saw "Over the Top" at the cinema. It is awesome! It has one of my fave quotes: "I drive trucks and break arms, it's what I like to do and what I do hest"
Hero and the Terror with Chuck Norris is a total favorite! Not sure if Lonewolf McQuade is Cannon but I love that movie too!
Now must see Dangerously Close.
I love Cannon films and there just isn't anyway I can rank them. Bloodsport would probably be my number if I had to choose. I hadn't ever heard of Avenging Force so I had to watch it last night. What an awesome movie, that jumped into my top 10 for sure.
Even sans makeup I can see that one of the baddies in Avenging Force is Marc Alaimo, aka Gul Dukat from Star Trek DS9.
My top 5 Cannon Films-5. The Hitman 4. Cobra 3.Revenge of the Ninja 2. The Delta Force 1. Bloodsport
I was born in the 90s but grew up with reruns of death wish series and missing in action. Of course Cobra is one of my favorite Stallone films and Bloodsport for Van Damme.
I agree with your #1. Bloodsport was great! It had its flaws, but I loved all the different fighting styles on display. So much fun.
That was a fun watch! My #1 has gotta be Barfly.
My Favorite was American Ninja 🥷 with Michael Dudikoff and Judie Aronson ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
My Personal Favorites
15.) 10 to Midnight 14.) Missing In Action 13.) 52 Pickup 12.) Bloodsport 11.) Delta Force 10.) Firewalker 9.)Revenge of the Ninja 8.) Over the Top 7.) American Ninja 6.) Barfly 5.) Love Streams 4.) Death Wish 3 3.) Lifeforce 2.) Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 1.) Runaway Train 🚉
Cannon Films ruled. So many good times as a teen going to the theater with my buds.
Excellent list and super fun video Daniel!!
Thanks Andy!!
Big props for including Dangerously Close
I've always remembered Invasion USA for the scene of the guy cursing out another guy in Spanish for knocking over his soapy water bucket, lol
