I had wanted to get this out before the 35th Anniversary this past Sunday, but the whole famn damily has been sick, and so it is a couple of days late....but part 1 is here!
Bloodsport was my favorite movie growing up. The idea of this being a true story, a guy going and winning an underground martial arts tournament where there are no rules and people were fighting to the death was something I was fascinated by. As the years have ticked on the man that the movie is based off of, Frank Dux, has been the center of many controversies due to his increasingly grandiose claims...both attached to this movie and otherwise.
The debates on whether or not the events of this movie actually happened have been intense on both sides. So join me as I take a stroll through the minefield of Frank Dux's claims and his detractors, let's dive deep and find out The Reel Story!!
00: - 4:00 Intro
4:00 - 11:00 - Beginnings Of The Movie, And The Dux
11:00 - 15:05 - Frank Dux vs Vic Moore vs Reality
15:06 - 27:20 - "He says Senzo Tanaka is his Shidoshi..." (A Brief History of The Black Dragons and John Keehan)
27:21 - 29:00 - "Who the hell are these two scumbags?"
29:00 - 30:05 - Enter The Giant Elephant
30:06 - 31:22 - "You look like a Jackson..."
31:23 - 34:41 - Dim Mak-ing Stuff Up?
34:43 - 40:42 - "Hajime!"

Frank Dux is a reliable source of information somewhere between a Magic 8 Ball and a Chinese fortune cookie.
The fortune cookie reference is pretty apropos actually. They originated in America but are served in Chinese restaurants giving them the appearance of having real Asian culture but not actually having much.
This movie had it all: awesome villian, awesome hero, awesome best friend charecter and a blond love interest. Perfect.
I'm 41 and was lucky enough to see bloodsport in a theater. Nobody cared who Frank Duex was or thought for one second Bloodsport was a true story. It was 1988. People weren't that naive. The only thing moviegoers were talking about in 1988 was who is that Jean Claude guy, and when is his next movie coming out!!!!
And rightfully so, JCVD is a treasure lol
Bro I’m 45 and I was also, and your so right I wanted to be jean Claude van damme so bad a a kid. We were blown away when we found out the Kumite wasn’t real. Gosh darn internet has ruined so many of my fantasies. Lol
The internet giveth and taketh when it comes to fantasies lol. I'm only a few years younger than ya'll but I never got the chance to see it in theaters since I was still a real little guy, JCVD was a real life superhero to me in the 90's also. But if I could time machine back to the 80's at will, seeing this on opening night would be one of the first things I'd do.
@@ReelStory haha so true.
I was 14, we watched it at the drive in. That movie is directly responsible for countless Canadian youth sloppily kicking the ever loving sense out each other in backyards, bushes, and schoolyards from coast to coast.. For that alone it deserved a National Film Board award.
Bloodsport isn’t a guilty pleasure, it’s just a sick movie.
Bloodsport is Life bro
You are spot on my friend
Because... brick not hit back!
Certainly unmatched IMO
The Mentos bit is brilliant
"Sometimes it's hard to fail the test, knowing that you gave your best. That guy you barely know is in hospital for a week and that girl you just met, kinda yelled at you one tiiiiime!"
Unbelievable I never knew that guy played tong po also but I recognised him from somewhere. I watch both movies one after another. I was a massive jcvd fan as a kid. But it was before the internet so I just believed the end credit text about frank dux. I have read and watched loads about F D since but this is actually the most enjoyable video on the subject I have seen. Your presentation is excellent. I actually don’t see bloodsport or any of JCVD films up the quest. Films like cyborg, universal soldier and time cop are absolute classics. Bloodsport is a fantastic leave your brain at the door and enjoy movie. Thank you for making this video, it really spoke to the 15 year old me that was fascinated with the idea of a superhuman. I still admire Frank Dux in part !!!
Thank you very much! I was the same way after I saw this when I was younger, I believed every bit of it and wanted to believe this dude existed and that maybe someday I'd get to see these death matches IRL. Then the internet came and dashed all that away lol! But despite the fact that I dunked on him for nearly 2 hours, I do also actually like Frank as well. He's a bullshit artist but there's an art in his bullshit.
@@ReelStoryyou've shocked me I really thought that this contest was real as possible
20:03 Count Dante was the world’s most dangerous hairdresser🧛🏼♂️🥋✂️💈
Nah, the dude who knocked out Suge Knight is
I always forget Forrest Whitaker was in this
Sir, a standing ovation to this amazing breakdown!
Thanks to the algorithm overlords for bringing this fine vid review to my feed 👏
Also shout out to that Mentos commercial! 😎👌 We could have used that in the '90s.
Thank you very much! I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
@@ReelStory for sure ! I'll watch part 2 soon .
@@theironforce3000 if you liked the Mentos bit I think you will really enjoy the end of part 2 😄
I never get tired of people shitting on this guys 😂
I love the guy, I miss the days where a good line of bullshit could carry you throughout a lifetime!! The internet was the end of an era.
I like your content, are you making more? Of did I got subscribe in vane?
Thank you very much I really appreciate it! Yes there is definitely more content coming! The video that I’m working on now was a much bigger undertaking than I had originally planned, and I’ve also been researching for a future video on Spartacus. My regular day job and my kids crazy summer schedules have made me busier than I expected the last couple of months but the next one will be out soon. Stay tuned and thank you for the sub 🙂
😂😂😂
The internet might encourage some bs but it also makes it difficult to BS people 😂. Someone will research
@@TheSquad4life In an ideal world ALL information would be available, not censored.
this just got better as it went. Thank You for the Mentos
Bong Soo Han R.I.P 🥋 Grandmaster #1 Bow. I have to pay respect sorry.
"Frank handles him like a prison b**** with koolaid on his lips" - greatest quote in YT history.
The cutaway animation, video clips, and humor in this video is incredible. Awesome timing in the narration, thanks for putting so much work into this video.
Thank you very much!
I'm 35, and this is my all time fav movie, my father and I would watch this on reply so much!
Back in Southern California way before Technology in this culture there was a very pervasive 'Fish Story' with Story after Story building and growing these Legends and getting High on your own Hype even amongst the most humble of Martial Artists, their students and Bystanders. With the Fish growing longer and fatter and more mean with each retelling 😅
The Muay Thai fighter in Bloodsport is an actual fighter and trainer named Paulo Tocha. He would have absolutely melted Frank Dux or JCVD in a match 💫
Truth. Tocha was a bad MF
Van damme was also a real fighter he has a very good record tbf.
Not saying he would win tho but he was legit
Maybe, but Brian Bosworth melted him
Van Damme also regularly sparred with Dennis Alexio, his kayfabe brother in Kickboxer.
Van Damme was legit.
Tocha was/is legit..
You shattered my childhood fairy tale, yeah I was dumb enough to believe it but you made me die laughing while doing it great job!
As a kid I fucking loved this movie!!!! And btw I still do!
Great video! Always loved Bloodsport growing up and believed the "true story" it was based on as a kid. In my teens and as an adult learning about it's potential fabrication I also found interesting if not a bit disappointing. And then in the years later finding out the strange coincidences that there might be some truths to Duke's claims, or at least coincidental parallels was even more fascinating. Through my years of incremental research and dabbling whenever the subject came up, I never really found a concise, thorough line of what's true and what's false. I'm sure there's other deep dives out there, but this is the first video that I found that really touches bass on everything. Thank you so much for this, instant sub for me
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that!
This channel is highly understood 💯
Dude, the *Mentos* advert slayed me!
😄😆😅😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The score is nothing less than a god damn masterpiece.
Wow it’s amazing to think this movie was actually based on a true story, dux must have been some fighter, I can’t believe he didn’t do any martial arts tournaments but I guess the guy was a real warrior
Most legit badass that ever existed in the history of no holds barred fighting.
For any of those doubters, I just refer them to the closing credits of the movie.
Checkmate.
What!? Lmao I almost believed you were serious for a moment!
@@DukeRhodes 100% mate, it’s there in writhing for any jelouse doubter to see, hell the man basically wrote the book on all CIA tactics, there’s even rumours that he taught SAS and delta but frank is very humble and keeps such things to himself
@@DukeRhodeslol...
That mentos parody is top notch. Saw this on a facebook reel and shared it a while back, exactly 0 friends haha'd it. Man i need new friends.
We all do...lol
This totally makes me want to watch this movie. I haven't seen this in years.
To be honest, it should be in your regular rotation.
Awesome video.. you might be my new guilty pleasure 😂
I accept this role lol thank you very much I appreciate it!
Excellent commentary. F'n sense of humor is on point
Thank you so much!
The secret to telling a believable lie, stick as close to the truth as possible. As corny as Bloodsport was, especially watching it nowadays, it inspired a lot of people to become better martial artists.
Best subscribe request I've ever seen. Who's favourite movie wasn't Bloodsport. I only found it after years fbeing a Jean Claude fan. Along with the original Kickboxer, Bloodsport really does stand alone though. It's like a live action play through of Mortal Combat. Thank you but putting this together.
Thank you very much!
7:49 he kinda resembles Van Damme when he was Young lol
Looks like the kid from the movie. Cyall tha cyaps kid.
“ he’s certainly no theif “. What? The guy lies about his background to steal money from simple people, that fraud and considered stealing by law. Oh and the mentos commercial was effing awesome
Thank you very much! I meant it more tongue in cheek than it came out, like sure he’s all of these things but he’s no petty thief, he most certainly swindled people out of money no argument there
Frank actually "downplayed" all of his accomplishments. Humble and honest guy
I love the research that was done. My bro went to Frank’s’ school and was not impressed. He had to sign a contract that made him responsible for paying for six months no matter what happened in or out of class. In less than a month my brother got hurt by one of the veterans of the class and talked to Frank whose only concern was that my brother still has to pay for those 6 months.
Thank you! I’m genuinely not surprised Frank would have a clause like that at all. In today’s world if he were still teaching I am sure there would be a signed NDA required before he would work with anyone.
Why didnt Ray yell NERDS but they shouldve had him with his football jersey on from nerds to see will fans notice , but good movie it will go down as the movie that C.V.D
Ogre...lol
The intro is classic
Salute
His story seems pretty legit. I'd put it right under that historical documentary I watched. I think it was called "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter"
THE GOD FATHER OF MIXED MARTIAL ARTS LOOOOL
28:52 That was amazing. I haven't seen a mentoz commercial in forever and GD it, that movie scene is a perfect fit.
28:46 LMAO I haven’t heard this in years. So many memories seeing these commercials as a kid.
Great summary... you deserve more subs. Thanks for the entertainment
Thank you very much for the kind words! I truly appreciate that. It is sometimes seemingly a monumental task to break through YT's formula to be seen, but I am happy for every one I get!
Epic history and review of this film! Love it! P.s. that was a picture of Taekwondo master Hee il cho... not Bong Soo Han. Although Cho was around and influential in California too, but in LA. Fun fact Cho appears in bloodsport 2 and 3 haha.
Thank you very much!
Never took this movie that seriously as a kid but still enjoyed the hell out of it! Thought it was just a tournament that someone embellished a bit too much to make the movie more entertaining.
Looking at dux posing next to his trophy, I gotta wonder.....how the HELL are the weight classes divided at this Kumite? Does heavyweight start at 170 pounds? Why have we never heard of the Cruiserweight champion?
Frank was also the cruiserweight champion he would win the heavyweight matches drop to 130 and win the cruiser then drop again to 90 to win the welterweight. Then he’d put the weight back on
@@ReelStory So he won the heavyweight title, then shaved off the mustache?
Exactly. As massive as Franks head has gotten over the years that mustache carries a tremendous amount of weight
He bought the trophy for himself. And the real Dux got knocked out with 1 punch in a bar fight which he started with Zane Frazier, a real tough guy that fought in the first UFC
@@adamirishconundrum851 It wasn't 1 punch, he wasn't knocked out, it never happened in a bar. Frazier punched Dux then slammed him into a table and then people came and pulled Frazier off.
I kind of want to see an interview with Steven Seagal and Frank Dux. The BS Olympics
This was excellent and Blood Sport is one of the best movies ever made. It has everything.
Nook soo kow nook soo kow........get him Kurt!!!
Thats kickboxer
Omg the mentos 😂😂😂
Awesome job my guy
I once saw Frank Dux kill 3 men in a bar with a chopstick...a chopstick! Or was it a chapstick? Either way it's based on a true story...
I think that might have been a deleted scene…
Any competitive jujitsu blue belt would spank dux hands down. 💯
Any striped white belt Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioner would destroy him.
@@DukeRhodes - Says who...you weenies? I've fought a blue belt bjj and I was just a street fighter with some boxing and wrestling experience and I messed him up bad. You weenies have never lived in a area that's rough and being tough is the way to survive. I grew up in the late 70s and 80s and the 90s was all about high school and college and watching your back. I'll take you two on, how about that, and we post it on RUclips. Let me know weenies if you're game or lame.
I have loved this movie since I was a kid whenever it was released in 1988 I believe it was.
I always thought and still do believe that the reason Chong Li broke Parades' leg was to show his superiority of strength by snapping the known steel hard shins of a muay thai fighter.... perhaps I'm over thinking it but it could be the message he was trying to send by finishing the kickboxer in such a brutal fashion
Never thought of it that way before but I like it!
Black Belt magazine had real trouble with journalism
Movie is brilliant frank dux though oooh boy so many holes in his backstory lol
Great video. One of my favorite subjects
Grew up on bloodsport absolutely great movie love the storyline diffrent countries fighting in underground tournaments what more do you want in a movie
This. Is. Awesome. Period!
Thank you!
20 fights in one day full contact?! LOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
It's a great film, whether based on true events or not. I do believe it would fall into anyone's top 5 of all time😊
My friends and I kept this VHS on repeat..we knew it was BS at 11, we just didn't care..
I remember my friend bought the Bas self defense tapes lol
The Dux story has Segal heat with me
Oh yeah I love this movie even though the story line is utter most and unbelievably full of bat shit crazy bullshit from a genuine con artist but the movie itself is solid fkn gold
We all must remember, Van damnne, was almost the predator lol. Nice video. Easy sub
Thank you!
Great video
I can't believe Dux called himself the Godfather of MMA.
If you don't like Bloodsport only half-ironically and Kickboxer for real, we can't be friends.
I love the character Ray Jackson who is played by the totally awesome Donald Gibbs who happened to play the character oger n the revenge of the nerds prt 1 this dude I or was a great character actor I hope he's doin well these days
A hypothesis I recently came up with is Shingo didn't die, he ran away because his father was too demanding with the training. He ends up in Hong Kong running with the Yakuzas who allow the Kumitê to be held there and becomes the most dominant champion in Chung Li😮
It’s been said that in the original script it’s mentioned that Shingo died in a car accident which I thought was lame so I’m glad on the one hand they leave it ambiguous
@@ReelStory I thoroughly enjoyed both videos, as Bloodsport is one of my all-time favorite movies and the whole Frank Dux thing is so legendary. I instantly subscribed to the channel and will be tapping in with more of the content. Your attention to detail and sense of humor is spot on, you are appreciated greatly 🤙🏾
@@EsotericEdutainment dude thank you so much! I really appreciate that!
Impossible because Chong Li is supposed to be Korean and wears a Korean flag headband. Also Frank would recognize him and of course…that doesn’t happen
Bolo Yeung/Chong Li was already the bad guy in Bruce Lee's Enter the Dragon, from which Dux stole the whole storyline. Dux was so crazy he even took bad guy from the movie he stole the story from.
I think the guy who won the jungle fight club is Tom po
Thanks!
Thank you very much!
You sir are a gentleman and scholar!!!
That Mentos commercial!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Leaving comment to help with the algorithm cause I can already tell this dude channel is goated just by the fact that he already did the Johnny cash movie Walk the Line, gonna switch to that one & watch it before this one honestly lol but still definitely just as hyped to watch thjs one
Thank you! Hope you enjoy!
Love that movie too 💯👌
I just can’t finish it. Got to goofy ass Frankie at 13 in a draw with Vic Moore. I had to turn it off. My favorite part was the sunglasses in the interviews. Hiding the eyes much? Ugh.
Vic more is a great comedian. Gotta give him that. No matter how many witnesses that comes forward and state that he never blocked any of Bruce's punches, he still claim he did.and that there's hidden footage of it .
He is in the same class as DUX.
Anyone here knows Jean-Claude skills well?
Is he really only 2nd dan in shotokan?
I went 2-1 against Frank back in tge day before i became good
I've met Frank a few times, I don't believe his story but he is a nice guy and very fun to talk to.
He seems like he’d be fun to get a beer with honestly. I wouldn’t believe a word he told me either but I’d have fun listening to him ramble
listening to wham was a guilty pleasure, journey was never a guilty pleasure.
Ironically, Frank Dux inspired more people to martial arts and more martial arts movies than anyone I can think of besides Bruce Lee.
But..I was only wondering to myself about the true story behind the movie earlier when Prime recommended it, how did YT know?? 😥
YT hears everything….. even your thoughts…
I don't care, Frank's real to me!
Chinese Hercules (Chong Li) was a Korean character... or at least implied as he wore the Korean flag on his headband.
I know, I’ve had to explain this a few times I should probably pin a comment lol. I was referring to Bolo he played a character called Chinese Hercules earlier in his filmography.
Whether it's based on a true story or not, this was a fucking great movie.
No argument there
Instant fan and sub to your work.
Glorious!
Thank you!
Van Damme played Army Captain Frank Dooks in Bloodsport! Marines, Army, Army, Marines? Another minor detail that some how slipped by editors
😂Frank D & Charlie Z😂
36:55 20 matches a day? I'd have to smoke crack to buy this.
Ogre was always my favorite Dude.
Count Dante vs Frank Dux, who wins?
Didn't the UFC base the Tank Abbott character on Ray Ogre 👹 Jackson!?!?😂
The hilarious thing about Count Dante is he actually led an interesting life worthy of a biopic. While yes a martial arts grifter, he actually lived a life and did some crazy shit. Dux is all grift.
I agree I would totally watch a Count Dante movie. Maybe I’ll write a script someday lol
I also thought that Chong Li killed Shingo when I was younger!
"Okay, U.S.A.!"
🎶kumite🎶
🎶kumite🎶
The winner of a 16 man tournament 4-0 for the day, so to have 56k/o I ☝🏾tournament is astronomical 👀 no amount of Kumite Math magic will make it work how long was this tournament!?
Right up my alley
Oh man, what movie is that where R Lee Ermy is shouting "stay away from women!"?
Saving Silverman
8:22 While that Bas Rutten video is definitely funny, he is/was an actual world class fighter.
I think you should also watch whatever you can find on the subject from The PinkMan, although his youtube accounts no longer exist.
Imagine a movie based on and starring Dux and Steven segal
