Great to see three of the Hammer Frankensteins make your list. Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed is another very worthy sequel - surprisingly dark and gruesome!
The Bride of Frankenstein is my favorite and also my favorite Universal classic monster movie. To get James Whale to return, they allowed him more control, which is why it's so much more interesting than the original.
Kind of like Tim Burton and the Batman movies. A director inserting themselves more into a sequel after the success of their directorial original and given more freedom to shine.
Dear Boris is my lifelong hero! The book Dear Boris, by his friend Cynthia Lindsay, is a must-read for all of his fans. If you haven't read it, check it out! ❤
@@h.calvert3165 I will check out this book for sure. He was such a kind and humble man. Not at all like the characters he portrayed. He was a great actor.
One of the best adaptations was the obscure 1984 tv movie version with David Warner as the Monster and Robert Powell as Victor Frankenstein. It also starred Carrie Fisher.
I'm happy to see FRANKENSTEIN: THE TRUE STORY on your list. When I was a kid it scared me more than any of the Hammer movies because they looked "fake" while this Creature looked like a fiend you could actually run into! Even the music was scary! BRRR....
Great list. Interesting choices. Will definitely check out Victor Frankenstein. Missed that one. Love your enthusiasm and your taste in movies. Subscribed.
I love that you included Monster Squad!!! Your rankings are awesome dude. I never know where you’re going to go! Excellent horror content brother, keep it coming 👍👍
I saw “Frankenstein the true story” when it originally played on TV and really liked it! It has such a sad tragic ending because you find yourself really caring for the characters.
Interesting choices, although I like "Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed" and "Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell" more than "Revenge of Frankenstein" and "Frankenstein Created Woman."
For me the best Frankenstein film is the 1931 one with Boris Karloff. However I also really liked Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Robert De Niro shows us the most human and sensitive side of the creature created by Frankenstein who is no longer just a mindless murderous monster, but a man who suffers because he feels alone and rejected by everyone. He knows how to love intensely but also hate and desire revenge.
I love “Son”. This is an excellent video! I haven’t seen a bad one yet on this channel. I tell ya the video that hooked me was the best Autumnal movies. I love autumn sooo much. So I got it and you got an instant subscriber out of me.
Pretty cool list. My order is different but these things are subjective. I’m glad to see “Victor Frankenstein” on the list. I thought I was the only person who liked it. I watched it again recently and still found it enjoyable. My second favorite portrayal of the Creature (after Karloff) is by Rory Kinnear in Showtime’s “Penny Dreadful.”
I like Glenn Strange too as the Monster. He has those facial expressions with no sound that really makes it more scary than something you would sympathize with
I can already tell you what the worst Frankenstein movies are: Frankenstein General Hospital, Frankenstein '80, Frankenstein's Castle of Freaks, Erotic Rites of Frankenstein, Frankenstein's Great Aunt Tillie, and at the very bottom of the pile, Frankenstein Island.
Solid list! I'd never heard of the movie, Victor Frankenstein. Sounds interesting, will have to find it. I saw Frankenstein: the True Story in its original TV broadcast and it was originally shown in 2 parts. It was considered gory for the time, but still excellent
Victor Frankenstein is quite good, and James McAvoy gives a grand performance as the unhinged mad doctor balanced by Daniel Radcliffe as Igor. A story that reimagines and subverts expectations, if you liked Van Helsing, you likely enjoy Victor as well. It feels somewhat cut from a similar cloth.
Fantastic list. Happy to see the Hammer films. If a T.V. series were part of the list, I’d definitely add Penny Dreadfuls monster. The entire series is great but the monsters arc from angry bitter creation to such a sympathetic character is a thing to behold.
I’ll never forgive him for killing David Warner’s Van Helsing and then throwing him in the garbage. I almost quit watching the show because of that lol. I still hate that haha
Great list! Pleasantly surprised to see Lady Frankenstein in there, and I'm pleased Son of Frankenstein made the cut (it's my favourite of the Universal series). My beloved Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed was nowhere to be seen, though, damn you! Still, top work - enjoyed the video. Have to say, I have a real soft spot for I Was a Teenage Frankenstein, although I doubt it would ever make anyone's top fifteen.
Kenneth Branagh was part of The Royal Shakespeare Company and made Henry V and Hamlet into film adaptations (both my favourite adaptations of the two plays) which is possibly the reason for his over-theatrical production style.
Some really great choices!! I love the Hammer Frankenstein franchise, and how the focus was mainly on the doctor. Peter Cushing is awesome! The old Universal Frankenstein franchise is also great. Boris Karloff is the gold standard when it comes to playing that character. I always thought that the reason the monster gravitated towards Ygor, was that he reminded him of the old man from Bride of Frankenstein. Keep up the great work!!
Frankensteins brain was Abby Normal and responded to the simple nature of sympathetic friendship and non judgment, and still, he was crucified (thematically). It has enduring fundamental resonance, I think.
Very cool list. Love to see lots of familiar films. My own list would go something like this: 1. Young Frankenstein (1974) we'll have to agree to disagree on this one, for me these jokes land hard 2. The Bride of Frankenstein (1935) 3. The Curse of Frankenstein (1957) 4. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994) flawed yes but I really like it 5. Frankenstein (1931) 6. Frankenstein: The True Story (1973) 7. Frankenstein Created Woman (1967) 8. Frankenstein (2004) a Hallmark TV production, this is the most faithful one to the book that I've seen 9. Son of Frankenstein (1939) 10. Frankenstein (1992) often forgotten David Wickes TV production 11. The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958) 12. Victor Frankenstein (2015) 13. Flesh for Frankenstein (1973) 14. Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (1969) 15. The Bride (1985) slow but visually gorgeous film
I couldn't take the version starring Robert Deniro seriously, he still had that gangster face , plus what I found a bit odd in Bride of Frankenstein was when the monster makes a blindman friend , then the monster started drinking and smoking weed . Remember the monster started saying Drink , Smoke, Good, Good. Couldn't stop laughing.
The 2006 Frankenstein miniseries with Luke Goss (best known for Blade 2 and Hellboy 2) as the monster is ironically more faithful to the novel than "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein". Hands down the most faithful adaptation I've seen to date.
'Frankenstein the True Story' is the closest out there to the book...In the book, Frankenstein is a student (not a doctor) and the creature does start out handsome and intelligent.
I saw a part of "Frankenstein - The True Story" on TV as a kid. I can not believe that they showed that. To this day, I find that what the monster does at the dance ball is the most horrible thing that I remember in a made for TV movie. Spoiler... . . . The fact that it involves the tragic bride, the beautiful Jane Seymour, fighting super-fiercely for her life before her head literally gets ripped off, makes it worse.
1. The Bride of Frankenstein 2. Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed 3. Frankenstein (1931) 4. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein 5. Frankenstein: The True Story 6. The Curse of Frankenstein 7. Son of Frankenstein 8. Frankenstein Meets the Wolf-Man 9. Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein 10. Frankenstein Created Woman 11. Young Frankenstein 12. The Revenge of Frankenstein 13. Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell 14. The Ghost of Frankenstein 15. The Evil of Frankenstein
I agree that "Curse of Frankenstein" is terrific. I wonder if you have ever seen "Kind Hearts and Coronets" (1949), which I think inspired Cushing's approach to Victor Frankenstein.
Interesting/informative/entertaining. My favorite Frankenstein movies (1930's) Boris Karlof's portrayed Frankenstein character. Vagely remember those glorious ( B+W) era productions🤗.. (60+) years ago. Enjoyed Abbot+Costello meet Frankenstein/mummy/invisible man series. Perhaps I'll view 👀 a few of the mentioned movies in the future-???🤔.
I saw "Flesh for Frankenstein" but at the time it was known as "Andy Warhol's Frankenstein". It was farcical but not really that funny as it was, I believe, intended to be. Now Mel Brooks' "Young Frankenstein" , that's a great funny Frankenstein.
Great list! Do you have or recommended an 'ordered list' for someone who wants to explore the Frankenstein story/myth as realized in film? One that would list the best films contextually so as to get the most out of each viewing? Seems several of the films expand upon earlier versions and having that historical context would increase the enjoyment of a given film. Perhaps it's just chronological order? Also, not a Frankenstein movie but 'Spirit of the Beehive' is an incredible film with a Frankenstein 'cameo' at one point.
There are four Universal Classic Monster films that I kinda-sorta call "The Ygor Saga": *"Son of Frankenstein" (1939), *"The Wolf Man" (1941), *"The Ghost of Frankenstein" (1942), *"Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man" (1943) (the director's cut of this film, which we'll probably never get (this is the kinda-sorta part)). What do you think? Will the last film in this series-within-the-series ever be released in its uncut form?
1977 Swedish film Terror of Frankenstein aka Victor Frankenstein beat Mary Shelly's Frankenstein by nearly 20 years in accurately depicting the novel on film. A trans-European cast, including Per Oscarsson as the intelligent but pale and emotionless Creature and Nicholas Clay (Excalibur) as the doomed Henry. Leon Vitali from Eyes Wide Shut was the determined than confused Victor. SFX were kept at minimum.
You forgot to mention 1990's Frankenstein Unbound, starring John Hurt, in which a future scientist, is transported with his talking car in the time of Victor Frankenstein and his monster. This movie was directed by the late Roger Corman.
Great list, BRIDE is always my favorite, but otherwise I can't argue any on the list. Karloff in BRIDE and Lugosi in SON were definitely Oscar worthy performances, if only the academy wasn't so snooty lol. And Cushing was definitely the best, most devious, Dr. Frankenstein.
I will admit the reviews put me off seeing ‘Victor Frankenstein’, but I’ll definitely be seeking it out following your recommendation. It sounds like a sort of cousin to ‘Renfield’, though presumably without the huge(ly funny) amount of gore. Or Nicholas Cage’s gloriously hammy performance!
Most faithful adaption, Obviously hasn't seen the hallmark series Frankenstein with luke goss as the creature, .thats the most faithful adaptation of mary shelleys novel Maybe you should check it out hallmark Frankenstein 2004. Its on RUclips
Truest to Shelley's story is the Brannagh/De Niro version. The story is self contained and doesn't need any of the devices used in most remakes/sequels/etc. to revive the original story.
And then there's the quote of the week by the Baron in "Flesh for Frankenstein:" "In order to know life, you must first f*** death through the gall bladder."
Some great choices. Nice to see somebody give some love to Lady Frankenstein. It's a personal favorite I've always seen it s a Hammer... spaghetti style. I would probably put Frankenstein must be destroyed and even the monster from hell in over created woman. You did good not over loading with Hammer and universal which is hard to do. If never seen Rosalba Neri In Devil's Wedding Night it's another great one if u like Rosa
What and interesting list, with a few surprises too! Id probably have been totally unimaginative and listed the four with Karliff and all the Peter Cushings! (except Evil of Frankenstein!). Im with you on Young Frankenstein and Bride. The former looks great and the cast gives fabulous performances, i just dont find it very funny. (I know I'm in the minority!). I love Bride of Frankenstein and I'd vote for it as best ever Frankenstein movie if only Mr. Whale had not indulged his sense of humor quite so much. It worked in The Old Dark House and The Invisible Man, here, sometimes, it was a bit of a distraction. Still a great movie and Boris is fantastic!!!!
No Frankenstein Conquers The World on your List? What about Mad Monster Party? Or I Was A Teenage Frankenstein? Or how about Dracula vs Frankenstein? Or House of the Wolfman maybe? Or Santo and Blue Demon vs The Monsters? So many Choices
I'm glad you had Lady Frankenstein on the list. House of... is my favourite guilty pleasure. Victor F was very disappointing. Larry Fessenden's recent effort was great
I applaud your going against the critical consensus which places Bride of Frankenstein above the 1931 original. I never have, even though, like you, I do enjoy Bride. (Ironically I feel they should've given the "bride" a larger role in the film named after her!)
I also have a soft spot for the old Universal Frankenstein films. However, I thought Bernard Rose's 2015 Frankenstein was a pretty amazing update to modern times.
Do you remember the 1970s Saturday morning live action TV series "Monster Squad" that was released years before the film? If so, what did you think of it?
I'm Doctor Frankenstein to the tune of I'm Gonna Make You Mine by Lou Christie Broke every rule in the book Got called a ghoul and a crook With every corpse that I took But look, and you'll find I'm gonna stitch on some limbs, I'm gonna sew in a mind I'm Doctor Frankenstein. I'll build my lab in a shack, Hire a random hunchback Harvest the pieces I lack, and combine Into my brilliant design, into my brilliant design I'm Doctor Frankenstein. Baby, I'm Doctor Frankenstein. Frankenstein, I'm Doctor Frankenstein. Baby, I'm Doctor Frankenstein. I'm Doctor Frankenstein. I'll hook my custom made bod To an electrical rod Steal the power from God A tripod will work fine To send a bolt through It's brain, to send a bolt through it's spine, I'm Doctor Frankenstein. Baby, I'm Doctor Frankenstein. Frankenstein, I'm Doctor Frankenstein. Baby, I'm Doctor Frankenstein. I'm Doctor Frankenstein. Now he's a short tempered gruesome kind of individual Howling night and day from his cage. I've got to keep me away from his inescapable rage. Baby, I'm Doctor Frankenstein. Frankenstein, I'm Doctor Frankenstein. Baby, I'm Doctor Frankenstein. I'm Doctor Frankenstein. Although I gave him his life He's filled my days with such strife Insists I make him a wife, One more of his kind. A chance my plans to improve, a chance my plans to refine, I'm Doctor Frankenstein. Baby, I'm Doctor Frankenstein. Frankenstein, I'm Doctor Frankenstein. Baby, I'm Doctor Frankenstein. I'm Doctor Frankenstein.
I like the interpretation of Frankenstein's creation in Van Helsing as an articulate thinking being of self-determination and true representation of creation in seeking truth, if you get my meaning.
great video about the Frankenstein movies, but with all my respect you have forget one wonderful movie "the horror of Frankensein" 1970 with Ralph Bates & Kate O'Mara from Hammer Productions
Flesh for Frankenstein & Blood for Dracula otherwise know as Andy Warhol Frankenstein & Andy Warhol Dracula are sublime the movies may be a bit over the top but each one has killer soundtracks by Claudio Gizzi
The only thing that I have never liked about the Bride of Frankenstein are the little people that Dr Pretorius created. What? Those things are freaking magical and don't belong in the movie. However, I find it amazing that Elsa Lanchester has, maybe, three minutes of screen time and manages to become iconic. Kudos to the amazing makeup and hair design.
It's well worth seeing Flesh for Frankenstein in the original SpaceVision format. The 3D is spectacular but sadly it doesn't make the acting any better.
Bride of Frankenstein allows the monster to grow and show emotion. It's almost heart breaking watching him be accepted as a friend to the hermit
You could feel sorry for the monster, like in the original Mary Shelly book.
I am a big Hammer fan. But I love Boris Karloff and his ‘monster’ made me cry. 😢 ❤️ from 🇨🇦

I agree. Powell was really great and born to play the role.

I agree. Purely as a monster presence, Strange has an eerie undead iconography that is apart from the perhaps morally unhinged doings of the doctor.
Okay we both agree on the list and Peter Cusing plays THE best doctor going. Thanks for sharing loved it and you

*"The Ghost of Frankenstein" (1942),
*"Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man" (1943) (the director's cut of this film, which we'll probably never get (this is the kinda-sorta part)).

Classic iconic Monsters
Rosalba Neri ♥️
I've heard that the Hallmark-produced TV mini-series is supposed to be the most accurate Frankenstein adaptation.
It is from 2004
Thanks for the Monster squad, I didn't remember that anymore
Fun movie!
It would be hard to be Elizabeth and not be jealous of the Bride. Especially when the Bride is Jane Seymour.
What about I Frankenstein?
Oh man...i love Young Frankenstein. One of my favorites
I like Son better than Bride. And I like Young Frankenstein better than both of them.
The Evil of Frankenstein is my all-time favorite.
Thats a really cool jacket. Homemade?
Do you remember the 1970s Saturday morning live action TV series "Monster Squad" that was released years before the film? If so, what did you think of it?
I'm Doctor Frankenstein to the tune of I'm Gonna Make You Mine by Lou Christie
Broke every rule in the book
Got called a ghoul and a crook
With every corpse that I took
But look, and you'll find
I'm gonna stitch on some limbs, I'm gonna sew in a mind
I'm Doctor Frankenstein.
I'll build my lab in a shack,
Hire a random hunchback
Harvest the pieces I lack, and combine
Into my brilliant design, into my brilliant design
I'm Doctor Frankenstein.
Baby, I'm Doctor Frankenstein.
Frankenstein, I'm Doctor Frankenstein.
Baby, I'm Doctor Frankenstein.
I'm Doctor Frankenstein.
I'll hook my custom made bod
To an electrical rod
Steal the power from God
A tripod will work fine
To send a bolt through It's brain, to send a bolt through it's spine,
I'm Doctor Frankenstein.
Baby, I'm Doctor Frankenstein.
Frankenstein, I'm Doctor Frankenstein.
Baby, I'm Doctor Frankenstein.
I'm Doctor Frankenstein.
Now he's a short tempered gruesome kind of individual
Howling night and day from his cage.
I've got to keep me away from his inescapable rage.
Baby, I'm Doctor Frankenstein.
Frankenstein, I'm Doctor Frankenstein.
Baby, I'm Doctor Frankenstein.
I'm Doctor Frankenstein.
Although I gave him his life
He's filled my days with such strife
Insists I make him a wife,
One more of his kind.
A chance my plans to improve, a chance my plans to refine,
I'm Doctor Frankenstein.
Baby, I'm Doctor Frankenstein.
Frankenstein, I'm Doctor Frankenstein.
Baby, I'm Doctor Frankenstein.
I'm Doctor Frankenstein.
I totally agree.
If I remember correctly it was advertised with ANDY WARHOL associated with the picture
Penny Dreadful has several Frankenstein's including a murderously fab Lily Frankenstein.
I still haven't seen victor Frankenstein, but I'll give it a shot after this
It's well worth seeing Flesh for Frankenstein in the original SpaceVision format. The 3D is spectacular but sadly it doesn't make the acting any better.
Always loved the monster from the movie Van Helsing.
What about the Randy Quaid one?
ever hear of the weird FRANKENSTEIN'S ARMY and ARMY OF FRANKENSTEIN?
