    I have to disagree with your wonderful daughter, this was definitely one of your best Mr EV videos. Completely unpredictable and so refreshingly honest that it had me howling in laughter at times especially the "it's a Tesla model X" exchange. More opinions from Mrs EV will see your subs rocket. The Niro looks a fine car...but not for long trips.
    We have the Model 3 and there’s a heck of a lot of luggage space, but it’s not a ‘high’ car. We do long journeys via the supercharger network, and it’s effortless. We have a trip from England to Portugal and back planned (camping along the way when we’re allowed out), and ‘A Better Route Planner’ shows no problem areas...we find it very conservative, as we get more real-world mileage than it predicts at maximum speeds.
    If we wanted a high driving position, we’d have waited for the Model Y, but ergonomically there’s no need.
    Tesla’s are coming down in price bit by bit, which is a very good sign.
    Really enjoyed this entertaining video series.

    I like this; balancing the pros and cons in between the obviously enthused husband and the more critical (Italian?) wife. This goes beyond EV vs. petrol but embarks on the individual’s expectations and frustrations. Brilliant! Wish you guys a wonderful life with fulfilling compromises. 😊

    This is the very first video I watched on your channel. Charming daughter and sharp minded wife you got there! You tried very hard to convince her to buy a Tesla. The truth is that her female instinct kicked in here and saved you all from having quality problems with any Teslas. KIA is far more reliable in the long term than Teslas. Btw, Tesla at $1000/share is a good price to sell out. In Norway, where Tesla used to dominate, their market share is dropping fast due to quality problems. Within the next 3 years, every petrol station in Europe will have 50 KW DC Fast Chargers. Your E-Niro is a keeper!

    I like your wife's honesty she says it how it is. I took my wife on a road trip to the south of France a few years ago in a Mitsubishi ASX diesel no range anxiety problems but she wont go again because too much time in a car is what she did not like, I would do it again at the drop of a hat. I now have a plug in hybrid and as much as I really would like to go full ev I have my reservations about the charging infrastructure, reliability of the chargers and the payment methods are too complex. Looking forward to your UK road trip video.

    • @MrEV
      @MrEV  4 года назад

      Thanks Keith! A plug-in hybrid is a great stepping stone for when you do decide to take the plunge and go full EV. The infrastructure certainly needs work although IONITY, Fastned etc are fantastic. It’s the car software that perhaps needs to improve more than anything else - hence why Tesla has the lead.

    Thank you very much for the three videos. We're getting our e-Soul 64kWh in a few weeks and I cannot wait for doing a road trip: We're loving road trips. USA, Mexico, wherever we're going, we're doing a road trip.
    And we will love doing it with an EV.
    Thanks for all your videos. You helped me deciding to get a Kia e-Soul - the e-Niro was the only other choice after I saw how ugly and cheap the ID.3 lookes inside and how expensive the Tesla in the end is when you add all the things Kia just includes.

  • @blobstrom

    Brilliant video.. You have to love the honesty of the Italians and half italians.. "The Model 3 is ugly" had me nearly spitting my tea out. My daughter has been dating a half Italian guy for quite a few years and his father is very much like your wife and says it as it is.
    There's no doubt doing that journey in a Tesla would be so much easier, but then it's the things that are mildly stressful at the time become funny when you look back at them, the Tesla would be anti-climactic. How large is the Mercedes EQC compared to a Model X?

    • @MrEV
      @MrEV  4 года назад

      Yes, Italians are priceless! I know what you mean about the Tesla being anti-climatic: if we had done the trip in a Model 3, it would have been much easier but far less entertaining!

    You wife is right there is less stress with an ICE car on a trip like that. This I think, hope, will change as more charge points become available, especially charging hubs on major highways, but that’s not for a few years yet. Oh and I drive a Hyundai Kona Electric but I’m not sure I’d head for Europe in it yet. We do however travel all over Europe in our motorhome and I would in a Tesla, my next car.

    • @aquissuk
      @aquissuk 4 года назад

      I think a combination of more charger locations and improvement in batteries in the next few years and any advantages ICE have will all but gone. I think critical mass however will occur when charging speeds improvements have doubled. Halving wait times at public rapid chargers I think is just as important as availability of chargers.

    • @pierre-de-standing
      @pierre-de-standing 4 года назад

      @@aquissuk There suspicions that fast charging are not good for the battery, Bjorn Nyland has done a video on this and to be honest I am not surprised. I have not got an EV yet but I am determined to get one, the e-Niro or MG ZS being the likely candidates. Yes we need a better infrastructure, with the ability to graze more often in supermarket car parks etc and destination chargers, it will happen. One day we might even see untethered charging every where we go, just like we can get with phones.

  • @nickmartin884
    @nickmartin884 4 года назад +4

    Amusing video with a great differing of views within your family. Ultimately, road trips aren't for everyone regardless of what fuel you use. I'll be taking my MG ZS EV on a trip to Geneva next spring so we'll see how it goes; fortunately my kids are too old for road trips with their parents! As your wife so astutely mentioned in the video, destination chargers are the way to go and keeping the distance travelled down to 250/300 miles helps also. Finally, the use/availability of IONITY definitely helps. I use MAINGAU to keep the cost down - isn't it typical that you have to sign up with a German energy company to get cheaper electrons for your EV in the UK (and Europe)!!

    • @MrEV
      @MrEV  4 года назад +1

      Thanks Nick! I’ve just got a Chargepoint RFID which also makes IONITY cheap again. I’ll do a video about it in the week.
      Hopefully the Corri-door chargers will be switched back on by then - something like 97% of them are out of order at the moment although with the increased number of IONITY chargers in France now, you should find the trip far simpler than we did.

It was costly but generally used the 20% to 80% rule and drove about 80 mph/130 kph for the drive. I went between 150 and 180 miles between charges. Most charges cost me between $16 and $21. It was just me in the car and not much luggage. I had a great time. Thanks for your video’s. Your content was a large reason I got my eNiro.

    I have a Tesla 3, it has a huge amount of luggage space, far more than the Nero. Without the roof box you would be getting a good distance. My long range is 350 miles, probably 320 on this journey, but a standard would not be enough for you. Anyway, great video, thank you and your family.

      Seeing the boot/trunk in better conditions would help. A quick look in the showroom didn’t do it justice.

    before having the e-golf, we had a BMW 225xe which is a plug-in hybrid. although you don't have 'range enxiety`, you actually lost a lot of full electric range just because of the extra weight of the double engine and the fuel itself. And also becuase of the same reason it has a below then avarage fuel economy. so doing a long road trip would be really costly

    Lovely video and a great family. Absolutely loved the dynamics.
    I think it's unfair to ask about a Tesla because like most of life you have to make compromises. Your Kia Niro is great because it's perfect for your day-to-day use with the headroom and storage you need. You don't go on a road trip every day. The compromise is that when you *do* go on one, you need to plan a bit - perhaps a lot! - more.
    There's no doubt, though, that a Tesla makes road trips a breeze. We still check where we might stop and charge, especially in a Tesla desert like the south-west of France where we have our second home. But we've never felt anywhere close to the battery limit and that's charging consistently between 40 and 80%.
    Your wife is spot on though: we're a couple with grown-up kids. We couldn't have done our regular travel down France each year with the three of them in the back of a Model 3. In fact even with an SUV we were also towing a trailer on occasions. But that was when I was doing things like taking a complete Magnet kitchen including the sink to fit in France along with camping gear, and bringing back loads of beer and wine. 😁

    • @MrEV
      @MrEV  4 года назад +1

    A couple of take-aways for me from your experience - first would be to try to avoid a roof box and to carefully consider if a slower cruising speed could actually take no more time when allowing for charge stops. I have driven to Italy several times but I am not sure if I would have attempted it in an EV - the one situation where I would currently prefer internal combustion. I have done several long runs in the last week and I regularly saw a range of ~750 miles for my smaller diesel.

  • @ianmenai

    Totally agree about the toll booths! When you are driving alone in a UK car, you have to undo your seatbelt, get out of the car, get your credit card out and pay! That wouldn't be too much of a problem if your car (Jaguar I-Pace) turned the car off as soon as you open the drivers door! This is ridiculous and Jaguar can't or won't understand that this IS A PROBLEM! After a short time the lights go out and your car has NO lights and is in danger of a truck or car hitting you if the street lighting is off!
    Oh what commonsense your wife has, except the I-Pace isn't big! Tesla Model X is enormous and so wide! Publicity photos make the car look like they want to see|!
    Your daughter has a pretty balanced view on life as well, she certainly knows the lingo!

    Thanks for the great video, and lots of fun, too, Andrew and family. Your wife is so like my late aunt, who came from near Milano. She has an uncannily similar voice and way of speaking.
    Serious point now: It beats me how there were only 2 adults, one child and a dog in a car that size, you were not self-catering, and yet you needed a full roof box? I drove a small hatchback; the Metro, and then a Rover 111, on numerous occasions, years ago, with, on a few occasions, four adults in it, plus luggage, and food, for a 15- day self-catering holiday, and we still had room for gifts, etc, to take back home with us. True story. But your experience raises a serious question: Is the e-Niro really that limited for cargo space?

    • @MrEV
      @MrEV  4 года назад

      Thank you! The e-Niro has loads of space but we took far too many of Aurelia’s toys and the roof box was needed to bring back loads of things from Rome. I’m sure we could manage without the roof box if we did it again!

      @@MrEV Thanks for the reply, Andrew. I finished watching the video, and agree that those two unavoidable things were the real issue.
      Long distance travel in any vehicle is very much a matter of mindset. Eliminate unnecessary items first. Then make best use of space available, so that you can still travel in comfort. Mrs. RWB always manages to use luggage space very inefficiently, so I load the car. It's also wise to remove quietly the items which women take, and which are always available at the destination.
      You'll enjoy Snowdonia, but avoid it until late August through to the first week of October, when the weather can be much better than earlier in the Summer. It's the -rain- 'liquid Silver' which keeps Wales green!

    Your family are beautiful and very funny! A long road trip is always going to be a bit more taxing with the whole family, it was good to hear that the length of charging stops was not an issue since you needed to have a break anyway. This is what I find driving an EV, I quite enjoy the enforced breaks. Your videos may have looked like you were stopping to charge very often, when in fact in-between each video clip was several hours of driving! Hello mr.EV(and family), I loved your videos... I am an italian owner of a model3 sr+ and i've just done my first trip to holidays, a 5 hours journey from Milano to Follonica with a night at Firenze. I disagree with your wife about the space inside of the car: we are a family with 2 kids (8 and 4 yo) and we packed everything in the trunk (even 2 boxes of grocery and food) plus my trolley in the frunk.
    I can confirm no range anxiety at all with the tesla software.
    I know you are aware of Maingau, i've tested at an Ionity charging station in Italy and it works and it's cheap: 0,39€/kWh. It's even less than Enel-X AC charging (which works also with the Maingau app, but not with it's rfid card).

      Certainly if someone can afford to buy an EV outright then that makes a lot of sense as EVs depreciate far less. Had we bought the e-Niro, I think we’d be able to sell next year and not lose anything.

    I drive a Tesla Mode3. My choice was very much dictated by the Tesla 'Superchargers Network' . It is not true that there are more petrol stations than public chargers. The opposite is true! The problem is that you have to join or subscribe to the many different suppliers. Then they use different form of payment. That is why a decided to buy a Tesla. You just plug-in and charge. The payment is them made directly from your credit card.

I feel the same way that your wife feels, it's just not big enough. I didn't realize how small it was until I test drove it. Too short, not a hatchback, fun if you're single or a couple. And for me, the only real competition to it is the Kia Niro EV. The kia is so difficult to get in the USA. They're here, but not many of them. So the dealers are very tight with money and offer no discounts.
