Kaiju no Kami Reviews - Varan (1958)

- Varan began its life for American television before the American producer's backed out. Thus, Toho decided to continue the project without them. Was this the right decision or should Toho have left this Godzilla clone to drown? Watch to find out.
I agree with pretty much every positive and negative element you pointed out. Akira Ifukube's score is essentially the one aspect that saves the movie.
Yep. :-)
Varan is probably my favorite toho kaiju
:-)
By the way, the American cut is currently on DVD. It’s on Amazon for about $5, which is astronomically more reasonable than what we’re currently being charged for the Media Blasters DVD.
Thanks for the info.
Kaiju no Kami No probs. Speaking of which, I even included a sample of the American cut’s soundtrack in my recent Zone Fighter re-edit, for the scene where Kabutogirah is attacking the city.

Poor Varan, defeated by explosive diarrhea.
Pretty much.
I wonder if Varan inspired Ralph’s ability to fly in Rampage
Never thought of that. It could have.
Varan was made in 1958 while raph appeared in 1986 and in ralphs first appearance he cant fly so no
You have to feel really bad for Haruo Nakajima almost dying from a high height, an explosion happens to him where it hurts, he was electrocuted , almost drowned multiple times, fainted multiple times , burned, and sweated his balls being in those heavy monster suits and yet he still liked his job.
Yeah, that sucks, but as we know, that did not happen and he lived a long and glorious life.
I was wondering when you were going to do this video. Varan is one of my favorite Kaijus of all time.
I really feel he is such an under utilized monster. A shame Toho never put him in a better movie.
Yeah, people never appreciated him that much.
Kaiju no Kami Indeed,Varan is much more exotic in my opinion than the other kaiju due to its design and the way it just glides to get to places. It could of been done more justice if varan got a remake or hell even a new movie and new story from scratch! And its a shame that this exotic kaiju is very much in the dark for popularity.
This movie is actually a guilty pleasure of mine.
Same here.
Cole Robinson-Boivin indeed;D I love varan.
Toho doesnt even trying to make Varan a good character his movie was well bad but at least we get to know varan but i was ashame by toho didnt add varan in the original GMK just because he's isnt that popular i get that but try to give him a chance just c'mon
It would have been interesting.
I totally agree; even though I love Ghidorah and Mothra, they're WAY too overplayed. Varan and Anguirus would have been way better choices, both for the story and just for variety.
Varan was my first sub film bit of a culture shock at that young age.
Cool. Did you like it?
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork I did, it was strange at first having to read the subtitles then see what's going on but I grew into it
funny thing, while playing the latest Godzilla game, the title they gave varan (while he's not in the game, but is in the kaiju guide) they call him a "giant flying squirrel monster" i am not kidding
lol Yeah, that seems to be the universal description for him.
Varan was Intended to be a Guardian Monster in the Original GMK Draft but Toho put King Ghidorah in his Place
Yep. :-)
Characters half way through the movie: ight imma head out
lol
Varanopidae is the correct spelling, basically Varan is a radioactive giant spiky prehistoric monitor lizard known as the Varanodon. Just looked this up and it's actually really cool, not only Rodan is based on Pteranodon but Varan based on a varanodon. Toho was pretty smart to come up with these original monsters.
Cool info.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork thanks. Check out the production behind the monsters and you might be very intrigued by the interesting facts.
Varan is also a Draco Volan (Flying Dragon), a lizard that exist in real life.
It stretches out it's ribs and flattens his body to glide half the distance of a football field.
Honestly the most love varan got was in godzilla unleashed on the wii where he was a playable monsters.
I'm not sure if I Iplayed Unleashed.
It's a pretty fun game having 26 monsters and gameplay similar to destroy all monsters melee and save the earth. But it also has pretty
unintuitive motion controllers that really bog down the experience. Lots of people consider unleashed to be the worst of the atari published godzilla games, but i think it's pretty fun.
Ah yes, that was the game for the Wii. So no, I didn't get to play that one, just DAM and StE.
I just posted my review of this movie on my channel yesterday; now I think I was too easy on it by not giving the movie my lowest rating! No lie you're ending to this video is exactly how I watched this movie the first four times to review it! At least you had the Japanese version which sounds like it makes more plausible and philosophical sense like most Kaiju's movies do!!!!!! UGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've heard the dub is severely altered. I've never seen it though.
I like this movie I didn’t think it was perfect . The characters are good but I hate how there are dropped halfway through the film. The music is very well done the music was very similar to theme from King Kong vs Godzilla and mothra vs Godzilla which made me think of those movies. The effects are good. I wish there was more of the city Varan destroyed. I did hate how the posters showed him flying even though he does it one time. Varan is a great monster and has a lot of potential as you said. I would love him to see someday in the future.
Well that was interesting.
What was?
Two Michael Bay jokes for the price of one.
Yep.
Do you plan in covering Daimajin or Dogora anytime soon?
I just recorded my review for Dogora. :-p My hope is to have it out by the 31st.
Just got the original Japanese version on DVD, and you know what, I actually quite enjoyed it. It's not quite the classic that Godzilla, Rodan, and Mothra were, but I still thought it was very enjoyable, and a lot better than a lot of later Godzilla movies were. I also thought it was a lot better than Frankenstein Conquers the World (AKA: Frankenstein vs. Baragon), and definitely a lot lot better than what I think is the highly overrated Atragon.
I have mixed feelings on Atragon as I was kind of let down when I finally saw it. That's most likely be my next Toho Kaiju film review.
The Japanese version of this film does have an international version of the film, but has never released in North American yet.
So an international dub? I hope it's better than Toho's other inhouse dubs.
That track from Godzilla vs. Gigan was in Battle in Outer Space.
Is it? I haven't seen Battle yet.
Kaiju no Kami it's pretty good, it's on the Columbia Toho collection with H-man and Mothra.
Yep, I know. I own it, I just haven't watched it yet. :-p I also have yet to watch Latitude Zero and I bought that two years ago.
Varan isn't a very popular monster, but he still is better treated than Baragon.
Baragon got himself in another Godzilla movie though.
Kaiju no Kami Than died very painfully in that movie.
The suit actor for Varan who was one of the most famous suit actors suffered his only major injury in his career as the exploding truck badly burned his belly.
Yeah, I read about that. That's bad.
when are you going to review Atragon or The Mysterians?
Later on this year. The Mysterians will be my next Toho film, but first I have to get moving on the Alien series, I'm currently watching Ultraman, and then I will have Carranger. I've also go to get to some of the movies I have been sent to review and the first Daimajin in there at some point.
Kaiju no Kami trust me kaiju no kami the american version is practically the same with only a few American footage in their I saw it on Amazon and yeah it's boring. great video man can't wait for your next video
Kaiju no Kami 7:07 what movie is that from?
Naked Gun.
Who would win showa Godzilla or Varan
Actually, the American cut with Myron Healey did infact come out on VHS 📼 some years ago, and that woman screaming 😱 for that 🧒 probably thought she was going to get an Oscar, well, she didn't get an Oscar, oh well.
lol
i still cant find a dvd or blue ray copy of this or matango for less then 100
Really? Have you looked into the Toho 3 Pack Media Blasters released? That might be the best option and I've seen it at MB's table at every convention I've been to, so it should still be in print.
Kaiju no Kami I checked that recently, it must’ve been around $200 or so. It was so, SOOOOO much more reasonable just a few years ago.
Do you think Varan will return in a future movie?
Probably not.
Can I be incredibly pedantic? I think I'll be incredibly pedantic. Warning for a lot of bionerd rant below.
As a biology student with an interest in reptiles, this was WEIRD. I get the jimmick of Varan, the name is clearly inspired by the Varanidae family, also known as monitor lizards, to which the Varanus Komodoensis belongs (cough- my nickname and avatar- cough). Said critter is the largest living lizard (crocodiles notwithstanding, as they are genetically FAAAR removed from the ACTUAL lizards), reaching a nice three meters lenght in some adults. They probably wanted to create a giant lizard monster and slapped on him the name Varanus simply because it was a very large lizard. That wouldn't even be an issue for me, if not for the fact that "Varan" looks like an IGUANIDAE! You can't slap my favourite animal's family name on a giant Iguana! You call him Varan, at least make it an actual Varanus! ...now that I think about it, wasn't Godzilla originally an Iguana too? Or that was only in the "that's a lot of fish" American movie?
That just said Godzilla was closer to that of a T-Re and Stegosaurus, but never really said he was a definitive species.
Varan was also the first pitch for the final Godzilla Heisei movie
Godzilla vs Giant Monster Varan
Would have taken place in 1999 and Varan would have been a kind of harbinger of the apocalypse
Godzilla would have actually made it out alive, ending with him and junior returning to the sea as 1999 switches to 2000
So instead of Destoroyah?
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork yeah,
another idea was
the ghost of the original godzilla possessing angurus (causing his body to mutate to be more godzilla like)
then there was the idea of doing Godzilla VS Bagan
Godzilla VS Godzilla Junior
and others
what movie was it with the robot with the balls?
Transformers Revenge of the Fallen.
Kaiju no Kami thank you!
Don't bother looking for the American version. It's even more boring, I always viewed Varan as a missed opportunity. I love Varan's design, and like you said, the sort of cross in abilities between Godzilla and Rodan could have made for a more interesting film. It could have been that the pull out of the American funding by ABC left Toho in the lurch, with a monster suit and some sets made, but not enough money to do a proper kaiju film.
Yeah, but that's no excuse to not have him in DAM outside of a 4 second cameo.
Love this movie! However the American version is heavily edited and almost unwatchable. Saw the American version a while ago as it was at this video store I would go to. Japanese version is one of my favorite Kaiju movie featuring one main Kaiju.
Yeah, like I said in the review, I've never seen the American cut, but I have heard it is bad.
Kaiju no Kami totally disagree with your take on this movie and it’s a vastly underrated Showa era film with a great kaiju.
I just watched it the other night. The original version of course. Lol It was a good popcorn 🍿 movie at best. Fight scenes were pretty good. ✌🏻Yeah, the stock footage really stands out for people who are familiar with ToHo kaiju films.
It does. Stock footage can get so annoying at times.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Yeah it does. Thanks for your reviews. ❤️🖖🏻
shame it did not make the grade or nobody has remade it
Yeah.
Kaiju no Kami
its high time they did
it has been realesed on VHS. I have it.
Good to know. :-D
Somebody used to have the U.S. version here on RUclips. It's not much better. But you must give some credit to Honda and the boys at Toho. They probably already invested a ton of money in this project before the American producers pulled out and just wanted to show something for it...
I'm sure they did.
It’s to bad he has been in two movies
I'm not really sure you can quality his 2 seconds in DAM as him being in the film. I do like what they did with him in the IDW comic book though.
Ok, that really Is an Iguana, even if both Godzilla are supposed to be the Iguanas.
lol
Yongary Movie 👍👍👍☺☺☺🤗🤗
I don't know if that one is even available on DVD or BD.
Shouldn't Varan be a monitor lizard?
Not sure.
This movie though rather generic and forgettable for a kaiju movie made in the 50's wasn't bad considering that it was the first appearance of Varan who's considered a fan-favorite to most kaiju fans (including me) add to the fact that it was one of the last kaiju movies filmed in black and white makes this one a somewhat underrated if forgettable kaiju movie.
It definitely isn't the worst.
The worst part is the American version I heard is worse how the hell do you do that
No idea.
Personally, I didn’t think the dub was that bad. The problem with the Japanese version is that it’s trying vigorously to be a good kaiju flick, despite the obvious factoid that it’s a weak rehash of the original Gojira. Not to mention, the pacing was a real drag.
The dub, on the other hand, had a shorter runtime, as well as a faster pace, in my personal opinion. Plus, the ending seemed to bring out a much more tolerable message, which was to not intrude on another person’s home (or that’s at least what the viewer can probably INTERPRET from the storyline), as opposed to the simple “Mankind has achieved another victory” message in the Japanese version.
Just my thoughts. Nothing more.
If you want to punish yourself, I found the U.S. dub streaming on Amazon a few years back. Can't recommend. Bummer of a film right? All the potential, none of the passion...but DAMN that Ifukube score. It's like he wrote his 'Greatest Hits,' album ten years early and attached it to Five Hour Energy commercial. I'll admit, I think someday, when the stars align, Varan will rise in all the glory this Kaiju has been denied ;-)
lol at the FIve Hour Energy joke. We can only hope, but first that means Toho has to care about their monsters that aren't Godzilla and Mothra.
I wish Godzilla fought gamera that would be awesome
lol
The American version is even worse HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE but it happened god dammit
Lol
I always thought it was pronounced VaRon.
Could be.
I don’t think the American cut is psychical available. A reboot is very unlike even though Varan had a super brief cameo in destroy all monsters but it’s at the very end of the film only for a few seconds you see him flying. I don’t even think he’s playable in destroy all monster on the game cube. I think in Godzilla unleaded the second and and last video game sequel to destroy all monster varan I think may have been included as a new playable character but he could not fly our i never used the button combination to make him fly. Then that really awesome obedcure fighting game that we did not get that Godzilla battle royal game may have included him. I know it included playable biolanta deceases before the Godzilla unleashed game came out.
Varan is a monster that should get a second chance.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork definitely
Varan is just lazy. Lazy lazy lazy. It’s no wonder why they won’t even redeem him in what GMK would have been. GAV!
lol
I mean if Toho would give him a chance and give in to fans demands then it would work out.
I mean heck give Varan more powers if they must. That way he can at least stand his ground against Godzilla and other Kaiju.
Haven't seen the original Japanese version yet, but I did just watch the American version online, and judging from what I've seen in your review and comparing it to the American version, it seems the American version was by far the inferior one.
So I've heard.
Varan has so much potential! The American version is laughable in comparison
Never seen the American version, but I've heard it's bad.
the american version of the film is much worse ........
So I was just told.
Jim Carrey was better
I'm going to have to disagree there. Carrey was great, but after the 7th and 8th episodes, which went beyond the material Carrey did, I am totally sold on Harris' Olaf. Can't wait for the next season.
