- Metalder had failed hard. So much so that Toei wanted to do something entirely different. They hired Akira Nakahara to helm their newest installment to the Metal Heroes franchise, World Ninja War Jiraiya. This show revolved around a ninja combatting various ninjas from across the world like an Olympic sport. Is Jiraiya a ninja worth spotting? Or should you evict this clan from your mind immediately? Watch to find out.

It's a shame that metalder failed. I loved how different it was compared to the shows that came before and after.
I can totally see why it failed though, but more on that when I get my review of it done.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetworkwhat's odd is that it aired along with Kamen Rider Black and Kamen Rider Maskman which had similar tones but were successful.
its like the Amazon of metal heroes considered darker then the rest though I see some reasons why it did not do well
@@zeokingsilver Mostly because it's boring.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetworkOh wow, that sucks because I loved VR Troopers as a kid and really looked forward to Metalder. If that's the case then which would you say was the best of the 3 series Saban adapted for that show, Shaider or Spielban?
Jiraya is one of my favorite Metal Heroes for a reason. Nice review Kaiju.
Glad you enjoyed it.
I remember watching Jiraiya back in the day, along with other Metal Heroes (e.g., B-Fighter, Junperson, Jiban). I miss those times.😢
🙂
I thought the title at first looked like a teriyaki beef jerky ad and I got a little hungry.
This is better
lol
I love this show. Broadcated on TV in 1989 in France on the channel TF1. And we have Kenji Obâ, Machiko Soga and so on. The french ninja named Catherine is palyed by Dorothée (who presented Récré A2 and Club Dorothée).
I guess she was also the scientist in Liveman that appeared for an episode.
Kenji ohba was great here and probably the last time he played someone somewhat young and fun before he went all serious as master/senpai. Hope he recover and can guest star in more toku other than space squad vs taisen related movies.
Was this really his last appearance?
Speaking of Metalder I can't wait for you to review it
I'll be writing the script some time this week.
that clip of the guy looking over his sword collection reminded me of general grevious
I remember catching a compilation video of this years ago. And then a few episodes on the Tokushoutsu RUclips channel, so i got a bitnof nostalgia from this Metal Heroes series.
Wait, Tokushoutsu showed Jiraiya????
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork just a few episodes. But i loved them.
1988. The year i was born. Neat.
Cool.
Jiraiya appears in Ninninger when Akaninger uses power of jiraishin mecha for Jiraiya top stop the yokai and kyuranger vs space squad gavan and shaider are allied by jiraiya facing ufo ninja.
Yep.
I actually like Jiraiya as you mentioned, it is basically G Gundam in Toku form. I was a bit disappointed that the action wasn't bad ass since Toei has a large category of Ninja and Samurai shows (Jidai serial) back from the 50s to 80s and could have amazing fight choreography. But it is a kid's show and no blood in it also. Manabu guest stars in an episode of Jiban playing the same character although disappointing that Jiraya didn't appear to team up with Jiban. I am benching quite a number of non-sentai/rider series and there are some interesting and some not, like Nebula Mask Machine Man which I enjoyed despite it is low budget and it's follow-up Kyodai Ken Bycrosser which is okay for what it is.
Not familiar with Mask Machine Man, but I have heard of Bycrosser.
I think I saw Demost, or someone that looked like him in that one Kyuranger special.
I think so too, which is why I didn't use the Alpha 5 soundclip.
Time for Ninja!
Go ninja!
You know, I've yet to watch Jiraiya in it's entirety, so the most I've known about were from random videos, wiki's and tv tropes, but until I've watched your review, I didn't even know Jiraiya even had a GIANT ROBOT. Where the hell did that come from!?
It came from the "We need to make some more money on this show," barrel. 🙂
Seriously though, I didn't know there was a giant robot in this show either until I got this Metal Heroes book a few months ago.
0:01 I Worked On That Star Wars Plan.
The Plan For Using Orbiting War Machines In The Near Future
RIP OFF!! 😀
16:55 This might be our first battle royale toku too multiple characters with the same title but with different powers battling it out over a thing that grants wishes
Never thought of it that way. 😛
Kaiju: what wuold be the motif you wuold have liked to see in metal hero
I had to look up Hashimoto's age, I didn't know Boi was that young in Zyurangers.
This was very famous in Brazil back in the day.
So I've heard.
Still is, a licensed Brazilian made sequel comic is coming in August even
Jiraya's so popular here it's actually part of slang. "To pull a Jiraya" means getting angry or too energetic
@@joaojahnke9684 True lol
get your ninja on
🙂 Damn, I should have made a disclaimer that this video is Ninja Rap free. 😛
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork was not meant to be a ninja rap thing
Have you thought about watching the 2 b fighter next? Besides gavan, it might be the most iconic metal hero duology to cover and review because of its American counterpart. People might be more curious about it than the rest of the other metal hero series. The lead actor was also the real life twin of the yellow ranger from dairanger.
I'll get around to the B-Fighter series sooner or later. Right now, I'm focusing on knocing hte 80s MH series out.
Interesting 😊
I love Jiraiya. It's huge in Brazil
So I've heard. Did it get a sequel series in Brazil?
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Tatsui Takumi is/was kind of a celebrity in Brazil. He showed up at a night talk show some 20 years after the show had ended and he was welcomed with a standing ovation. This lead to a TV channel to air the complete series once more in 2020 for the first time since 1999. The Internet connected A LOT of fans and there were tons of screenshots, memes and parody/commentary videos shared around.
Unfortunately the heyday of local live action and animated superheroes however, came a little later am afraid. The only Tokusatsu series I can remember off the top of my head were the Mega Powers (an MMPR copy) and it was released in the 2000s namely because CGI, as bad as it was, allowed small studios to do stuff that would've costed a fortune only a handful of years earlier.
But I'm pretty sure if CGI had been easier to produce back in the 80s or even the mid 90s there would've been a Metal Hero series made in Brazil.
Thanks for the info.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork This July will be released a Jiraiya mangá in Brazil that the story takes place 20 years after the end of the series. Totally official with Toei approval. And I confirm all the information that @BurnRoddy brought, and add more: Tatsui Takumi comes to Brazil pratically every year to participate in Japanese pop culture conventions(many times Hashimoto Takumi also comes with him) and he also has some relatives here in our country that he says he comes to visit often since the 90's. In time: we also had an official release of a Juspion mangá some years ago.
I think youtube recommended this for a bit & then disappeared while I was watching Den-O (painful). To me, Jiraiya has a lot of charm. I only watched like 20 eps of it (I got bored around the time the ninja princess lost her memories, I was blitzing through Faiz at the time). The writing aren't exactly captivating, but everything else was. When I said charm, I don't know what to describe it's goofy, funny silly cringe & the 80s feel the show gives. I kinda like how Toha is just a regular dude who has to put his armor & drives a car, it adds a layer of realism & normalcy which only serves to highlights the goofiness, the insanity of the villains he fought & the creative designs on the suits. It also makes the flashy action attacks feels more special as well. The stereotypes are kinda fun & gives a vague impression of the world events at the time, which I guess by the 2024 American sensitivity would probably consider these to be racist or degrading or something. To me, Jiraiya knows it's strength & weakness & gave it their all. It's a beautiful gem, flawed but the flaw adds to the charm, kinda weird to explain.
Yeah, it was a highly enjoyable show. The stereotypes were very fun. I mean, they have a middle eastern ninja stealing gas. That's so god damn hilarious.
Machiko Soga is always in the best form in her various roles
She goes all out.
Never seen jiraiya seems interesting tho
It is.
That kid was Boi from Zyuranger?!
Yep.
I wonder if Demost is what inspired Alpha 5?
Who knows.
Aaa Combattler V jump scare
Yeah, they watched that show a few times.
NINJA!!!!
Go ninja, go ninja, GO!
so many ninjas
10:29 Good thing he's not the one from America.
Right?
It's also fun seeing the metal hero characters adapted into Power Rangers.
I guess Gavan also showed up in Beast Morphers.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Yeah he does, and he still is a space cop.
Its really interesting how our opinions differ. I really like Metalder while i find Jiraiya to be a mixed bag.
I love the Ninja Tournament like setup and some of the characters are great Toha's dad and Not Bandora. The issue is the cast is average if not some are mediocre to bad. Like the main trio of villains and that stupid ass robot that is so damn worthless!
With Metalder, i'll get onto why i love it.
For Jiraiya i'd give it a 3/5
Fair enough.
I like Jirayia but I know it’s first half isn’t that good.
The first 10 episodes were kind of boring, but after that, it got quite good.
😮
of course they have to give the American ninja a gun but that is how actual ninjas work in the past with using flintlock rifles and pistols.
A gun AND a guitar. I had to trim the clip because of RUclips, but he also goes on to sing about being a descendant of Billy the Kid.
The whole ninja world and Boi from zyuranger fighting kind of remind us that we got the 3 ninja trilogy in the west during that time period. It’s like karate kid mix with home alone. However, Jiraiya is okay and average at best. It’s definitely not as good as kakuranger. Maybe it was time for metal heroes to come to an end like showa kamen rider. This metal hero series feel like hibiki being force to title itself under kamen rider.
Also, the franchise is hitting a stagnant period where every metal hero successor is kind of the same until Kikaider like Metalder. Too bad it got cancel early. It’s like when they cancel some of the 70s showa riders series and Changerion in the 90s starring ouja from ryuki as the lead protagonist. Back when ratings matter more than toy sales, what did toei produce to sub in and replace the cancel series? Very curious Do they just start the new metal hero or rider production early simultaneously with the one currently airing. Toei also did a bunch of sailor moon like mini series called fushigi comedy series starring gravure idol of that time. One of them even appear in the kamen rider wizard and fourze movie with other old school toei superheroes from the 70s as villains.
So Ik your gonna be reviewing Mobile Cop Jiban later this month with the Blu-Ray, but are still gonna be doing reviews for Spielban and Metalder? Cuz once you do I believe you'll be able to ever season from Solbrain forwards.
I actually just quality checked my Metalder review. If things go well, the Patreon edition will be out on Friday while the RUclips version will premier on Monday night.
We've got 10 episodes left of Spielban with the plan to finish it this weekend.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Metalder Monday. How fitting lol
Other than ninninger, I don’t think he appeared in a whole lot of other movies. However, Jiraiya is one of those classic old show along with gavan and b fighter kabuto that constantly get mentioned in the fandom. I get it contrast a lot of the police detective metal heroes prior and after it and it’s based on Japanese real mythology like kakuranger, but I don’t think it was that special or revolutionary. It’s a one off series metal heroes series that felt like kikaiderish metalder and blue swat because it stand out among the rest of the metal heroes. Kind of like how Changerion often get mistaken to be another cancel metal heroes series that tries to be different.
For me, what made Jiraiya special was it not actually featuring monsters and Dokusai actually being on the battle field 90% of the time.
the monty python joke was perfect for it, besides jokes from those guys is never not welcome
i suggest if you ever review the the first kamen rider series you use the knights who say NEE! for the shocker grunts
lol
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork do remember to do that NEE joke for kamen rider
I'm guessing your next review will be Jiban.
No, next is Metalder. I'll be writing the script this week.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Weill you ever get around to reviewing Ultraman Joneus and Gridman?
@@Guyverman01 No idea, honestly. I just haven't been motivated to watch them. Maybe Taiga coming out will push me to do so.
do ask weird question since kamen rider gavv is snack theme i just wonder about if do make fruit theme super sentai like see do with red as strawberry blue is blueberry yellow is lemon green is lime and orange is well orange and maybe 6th ranger be about veggie or other i mean do much pick 4 ranger be 6th ranger or extra hero like pink is raspberry purple is grape cyan is huckleberry fruit and brown is well i do go to kiwi but not sure like if this be after boonboomger see do with kamen rider gavv if be do team up or just do fight and whice one is better not sure what do make fruit theme sentai but will see really do got what you think
Gavv is what you get when Toei is out of ideas for a yearly series and they're just like, "Fuck it, just do whatever. It's Kamen Rider, fans will eat it up regardless!"
I hope Discotek Media gets the rights to the show.
It would be cool.
whats next
Metalder.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork ok cant wait.
Unleash the Buffalo!
lol
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetworkthis was a running gag what Shinta Reviews did.
Wait, that's actually Hatsumi.
WTF!?!?
What do you mean?
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Masaaki Hatsumi. I had no idea he was in this. That's wild. You mentioned it later in the video that he was the founder of Bujinkan, but he's also connected to Stephen Hayes who wrote all the ninja books that made ninjas popular in the 80's and 90's in the US. Hatsumi is pictured in a lot of those books, which is how most people know him.
@@GamesbyMarcWolff Ah, gotcha. Yeah, I read when I was doing my research that he had some connection to real ninja stuff.
does not feel like a metal hero series
It's definitely an oddball.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork feels like something else entirely
Well like I said, Toei hadn't come up with the Metal Heroes name yet. I don't believe they coined that until after Winspector.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork don't see why took so long with the ones before this would think they had an idea
and its also really dumb at times for me personally
That's most Toku in general though. 😛
