- Kamen Rider Hibiki had been a complete failure in Toei’s eyes. It had lackluster toy sales and changing the writers halfway through did not help matters. In fact, it only made things worse. As such, it was time to go back to basics with their next installment, Kamen Rider Kabuto. They hired anime writer Shoji Yonemura, who had worked on the likes of Berserk, Lupin III, and Pokemon. His first foray into the Toku realm was with a series called Sh15uya and he did write a couple of episodes of Hibiki in its second half. As such, Toei was taking a risk by bringing in a relatively unknown into the world of Kamen Rider. Was this a grandiose decision or a mistake? Watch to find out.

I’m at the final two episodes and honestly I grew to liking souji. At first I honestly wanted the worms to win(hopefully no one will think of me as bad for saying that) but as I continued watching I realized tendou wasn’t such a bad guy but just had a really big(probably universe sized) ego and needed friends to help him
Tendou's ego is what makes him such a fun character for me.
Kabuto always felt like the start of the shift towards the style that Rider would use in Heisei phase 2.
I feel Den-O was that way since Den-O was far more childish.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork I would say Den-O took it further, but a lot of the elements (more vibrant colours, more cartoonish humour, feeling like a live action anime) started in Kabuto. Kabuto is more the start of the drift towards that style, being full on that style. If anything I would say Heisei Phase to pulled things back a bit from Den-O since the bulk of those shows did have more mature and serous elements to their stories to balance out the humour.
also Kabuto's Rider Form bears an uncanny resemblance to B-Robo Kabutack from Toei's Metal Hero series which I am not sure is an intentional homage.

Kabuto kinda feels like a Shonen series when you think about it. Kogami is sort of the audience surrogate and POV character like Manta in Shaman King, Tendo is our actual protagonist but feels like a secondary character like Goku in DBZ or Yo from Shaman King, and we have all the rival characters in the other riders, whether they be friendly or antagonistic. And…… actually we dont really have anything in terms of shipping, like i think the closest is i think that military girl falling in love with Tendo I think(?), its only in the movie where Kogami gets together with Hiyori, at least i think. The female characters, like pretty much every rider show from phase one not counting Ryuki, none of them become riders, the stage show doesn’t count, and so they dont fight, but they aren’t used for fanservice so you know thats a plus

@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork beyond that I couldn’t fully pin down Kabuto’s tone a lot. Like it was serious most of the time, but other times it kinda felt like Kabuto was more of a parody of Kamen Rider. Not to the extent that Carranger or Akibaranger were for Sentai, but it often felt like some characters were serious for the sake of a joke or something. I can’t quite explain it.

You most definitely wouldn't understand anything going on by watching it first. However, it is okay to watch around the halfway point of the series, but after it works too.

I’d like to hear your opinion on something. I’m planning a crossover with super sentai, Kamen rider and power rangers where the black cross army returns and traps them in an arena where they have to battle monsters from their past without their powers. What do you think? Just trying to expand the power rangers multiverse a bit

It’ll take place in a sort of pocket dimension where the mask opens doors to every one of their dimensions ( except Agito’s, I’m counting it as a direct sequel to kuuga so both of them would come through the same door) causing the multiverse to start collapsing because that many doors can’t be opened without consequences
The duel between two make up artists was a sight to behold.
It was an interseting concept.
I remembered when my Grandmother said this: watching Kabuto in the cartoon network Toonami schedule was fun and enjoyable.
Things I like: opening theme, design of the suit (the better design of stronger), clock up, ZECT, and worm.
Things I almost like:
1. Story: I like the plot but very slow progress
2. Main Character: my only issue for him is the lack of character development
Overall: Despite some lots of many plot hole and unanswered question, it's one of my favorite hesei rider on my list. Not a meh season or bland series, it's a okay series.
I thought Kagami was very well developed.

Does every character need development characters are good enough just theyre personalities and theyre interactions with other characters. Not every character needs character development in every show dude 😕
If they are main characters, they most certainly need to be developed.
Yaguruma's actor played the gold ranger in Go-onger, not silver. But considering how terrible you thought that show was, I understand you might've wanted to forget about as much as you can.

Funnily enough despite his mixed track record with Kamen Rider, Yonemura would actually do better with Toei's Precure franchise, writing some of the best episodes of Heartcatch Precure (a show that itself was considered the best of the franchise), writing some of the better episodes of Suite Precure and being the head writer for fan favourite series Smile Precure.
Maybe it's because he had an easier time with Precure's more simple story telling, maybe it's because he wasn't working under a terrible producer.
It's possible. I know nothing about Precure beyond it being a magical girl show.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork I would say it's worth checking out if you are into Toku, since Precure often feels like a girlier and somewhat more kiddie version of Rider and Sentai (probably because that's exactly what Toei intended it as) and the shows do share a fair amount of writing staff. Can't guarantee you'd like it but it's worth a shot.

Not my favorite season but not a bad one. Tendou is kinda hard to like in my opinion but not the actors fault just the weird writing. Clock up allows for some pretty awesome shots like the baseball field in rain.
I definitely enjoyed the Clock Up scenes. I can totally relate to Tendou the same way I can with Takumi from 555.

Kabuto's powered-up form with those wings and the back opened up reminded me of Juukou b fighterr/beetleborgs Blue hero when they went powered up

Fun fact you mentioned Mishima in the heroes section even though he is the main villain of the season
Part of that is because that's not revealed until the last few episodes and would be a spoiler. Another part is I don't consider him the main villain when it is the Natives that are the main villains. Well, even they shouldn't be the main villains since it should have been the Worms.
I just returned to the series for a reason that would take a while to explain and looking at the description of the movie, I see why you recommend seeing the movie either when you finish the series or towards the super hero time movie double bill. It spoils the final form and the secret connection between hiyori and souji tendou. (Sorry for anyone else who sees this comment and hasn’t seen the series or the movie yet)

It's hard to say really given how much the cast rotated between TheBee, Drake, and Sasword. I guess it would most likely be TheBee.
I miss back when each rider is unique and they not call themselves as Kamen Rider, now day every Kamen Rider call themselves Kamen Rider as long they have ability to say henshin and wear power suit/armor, not like its bad but I just miss Kamen Rider just Bike Rider who wear a Mask and armor to fight evil.
Well to be fair, they were all still a Kamen Rider, they just had additional names.
Do hope you can do a review on those standalone Rider movies like Kamen Rider Shin (1992 ver, Kamen Rider the First, Kamen Rider the Next and the recent one, Kamen Rider Black Sun..
Supposedly Media Blasters has licensed them, so I'm going to wait for them to release the movies before I tackle them.

Three episodes in.
1. Just like with marvel and dc. Some fans prefer some riders over others. Glad you still found something to enjoy with Kabuto. 2. This is a placeholder because I want 7 comments to reference the 7 showa riders who ironically said riders transformation are less showy than the heisei aruto ja naito. 3. In general I really enjoy all the reviews and how u give constructive criticisms over why u my not like a show while pointing the negative parts of a show you really enjoy. 4. So is the next rider to review showa, heisei, or reiwa obviously it is going to be a bit before the next rider review. 5. Hope you enjoy kamen rider black sun holy shoot the suits are awesome and they keep the henshin pose truly awesome showa of the reiwa. 6. Shin kamen rider I like how their doing a dark esque suit for ichigo and nigo for that movie like the first and next versions also ichigo rocks that trenchcoat. 7. Dont know about you I feel it would be cool for a rider who all the forms are based on mythic beasts but with on the more obscure side. Like poking fun at how the iconic riddle of the sphinx is the greek one not the egyptian one. Open your eyes for the next kaiju no kami
Not sure what my next full length rider review will be. Unless Shout! Factory pulls a curve ball with a series I have not reviewed yet, it could end up being Zi-O since it is the last Heisei series Cruellica and I have not seen in full. On the other hand, I would like to tackle another Showa series, but not sure I have the time to do so due to all of the DVDs and BDs I have to get through.
To be fair, Daisuke Kazama's actor wanted to focus on his music career and thus his role as the character was reduced accordingly. Not sure about Gon's actress though. Also, I'm surprised you didn't point out that the actor that played as Shiro Kanzaki in Ryuki had a cameo appearance in this series. He was a ZECT Trooper and the Worm that was mimicking him in one of its episodes. As of now, I am up to episode 37 of Kabuto and I think I might be able to finish this Kamen Rider series pretty soon.
To be fair, I could have a whole section on just camero appearances, but that would take up another 5 or so minutes and keeping track of even more information than I already do.
Kabuto is easily my top 5th most favorite Kamen Rider show currently. Like I don't know why but I enjoyed everything that the show had to offer from start till finish and not to mention, Tendo & Kagami are phenomenal characters who are one of my absolute most favorite Rider duos ever and they are easily the best part of the show along with the action, suits, & music!! Overall, I'd rate Kabuto a solid 4.5/5 points as I have some bias towards this show and for me, the pros outweigh the cons personally 👍😎

You forgot to mention that Kamen Rider Kabuto got an english dub. I think it was worth mentioning just for the fact that Kamen Rider series don't usually get english dubs. I was also curious to hear your thoughts on it.

@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork You are forgiven. It only aired in the Philippines and Singapore. I just found it intresting that a company was willing to do an English dub for a Kamen Rider series.
I agree with your review and understand the 3 stars rating although I would gives it a 3.5 due to how fun Tendou and Kagami is at times. I do find Kabuto to be a very fun and enjoyable series at times with the episode and story. But yes, the ending truly sucks, its like the writer just doesnt know what to do about and probably said "Forget about it."
The song in Kabuto are amazing to me too since Next Level and of course Lord of the Speed is one of the song that stuck with me alot and I cant help but enjoying it everytime.

@@Agito4774 It'll most likely end up being Zi-O since that is the last series my wife and I have not watched from start to finish in the Heisei era. Though, it also depends if Shout! Factory announces something for BD.
With teaching full time this year, I just don't have the time I used to to get through an entire series. It's taken me two months just to get through 4 discs of Kuuga and four months for 24 episodes of Kyuranger.

Honestly i think this series should have been a 4 despite its flaws. I like the concep of not having the title rider been the protagonist and the worm plot is really cool.
The pacing just really harms the show massively for me.

I remember watching this series three years ago at the height of the pandemic with my wife. We came to enjoy it, it took some time cuz Tendou was very offputting due to.his characterization. I loved the different designs of the different Riders, i loved that there were bad guys to defeat but not one.central bad guy that we were building up to. It was a bit more complex than that. Tendou reninded me a bit of Light Yagami in how he tended to be ten steps ahead of everyone else. I loved that Kagami got to suit up as Gattack, and i did like there was a unique running theme regardin certain riders and their connection to little sister type characters being important to them. first with Tendou and his kittle sister, who he dotes on and prepares.meals for, and then Drake with the girl that wears thr stocking cap.and helps him finishes.his sentences.
I love the movie God Speed Love, its amazing. Although i still cant fathom why the film had the repeated bit of music in the score as a haunting rendition of God Bless America. Im guessing it has something to do with the lyric 'stand beside her and guide her' which ties in with the repeated line of 'i am always by your side' thats said throughoit the show.
Kabuto definitely had some interesting concepts going on with its characters.

Perhaps its too early to tell, but Kamen Rider Geats may end up being another series where the Secondary Rider is the protagonist.
That might be the only thing that Geats has going for it based on what I've seen.

and monsters are good too liked how they actually killed people.

It's a mess alright but I had fun watching it after Den O. The main riders of those two seasons are way too different in personality and other things.
I wonder if I'll like Den-O more this time around...

5:44, luckily this show treated her introvert-ness NOT as a joke but something to overcome....unlike Zyuohger which TREATED Misao's problem as a joke. I could say much about Akira from ToQger but the best thing about Akira there was that he had so much things he like such as bathhouses, he loves cats, he LOVES BEING DRAMATIC and Yasuko Kobayashi knows how to write characters and you feel something for Akira. I know MORE about him and Hiyori than I do with Misao other than he does...fishing.

In my arbitrary rankings of Kamen Rider TV series, I have Kabuto at #14 just because there are so many more KR series with more solid story and character writing, which I consider to be most important for long-term investment. I really miss the direction of early Heisei shows, though. While I won't say that Phase 2 shows are poorly directed, they're a lot more practical and there's a lot less attempts at style.
Yeah, Kabuto is a good show, but fumbles the ball a bit too much.
If only kabuto had a fire type final form then he could have beaten those worms easily because fire is good against bug but noooooooo hibiki already used that idea and that's why we can't have nice things the end

Kabuto is one of my favorite rider seasons, Kagami is my favorite secondary rider of all time and Tsurugi is one of the best auxiliary riders in my opinion, of course that also extends to the other characters (mostly as i didn't know what to feel in regards to Kageyama and Yaguruma after they became the Hellbros and Hiyori being one of the worst female leads her backstory is quite interesting but at least have fun for a while and emote, I'd rather have an annoying female lead over a boring one (Hey this is Derreck after seeing Saber and i think i want to retract that statement) and ZECT overall not being that interesting for me, seeing Kagami grow as a character was just an overall fun journey, also this show that gave birth to the line (not all Mary Sues are unlikeable) as Tendou is a really great a**hole i love him so much, Kabuto also has some really gorgeous designs with the rider suits (except Hyper Gatack cause that is just hideous) and the worms looking terrifying
However Kabuto is quite messy once it reaches the late 30s but overall i enjoyed it a lot
might i ask was this another situation with Skyrider (1 or 2, initially) and Kiva (3 or 4) where you flipped between ratings?.
I don't mind HIyori, but they did get weird with her. At least she did stuff compared to the wallflower from Wizard.
As for the rating, probably not. I was initially struggling between 3 and 4 but then the last several episodes happened and I was like, "Well, it's a 3!"
Now this was peak rider so from the shows i have seen so far. Not really merchant toy spamming for some of the hesie phase 2 and reiwa and not boring like kuuga. Just pre action.

What can I say about Kabuto? I liked it. It's not in my top 10 but I enjoyed none the less. I don't agree with people saying Souji is a Gary Stu because frankly I don't see it at all. Not to mention Gary Stu's don't have anger issues or punch someone for endangering their sister. I thought the final battle was just ok but I missed the remaining riders that were left to help out. Daisuke could have done something and Yaguruma could have helped Souji and Arata at the very least. I also don't see why people say the second arc was bad I just don't see it. Who is my favorite? Kickhopper.
I don't think the second arc is bad at all, it was just kind of messy when the Natives got introduced.

According to a Instagram account that had posted the Kabuto data book, the Hopper zectors were given to Yaguruma by Rinko himself off screen because Rinko didn't really trust Mashima. The stipulation why Yaguruma accepted if he gave Kageyama the punch hopper zector. Rinko didn't mind of course and let it be. And it was also said the Hoopers we're supposed to a fail safe of some kind but I didn't find anything else after that.
That would have been important information to see on screen.

The only thing i think is negative is how confusing the plot of the show can get because of the movie so i would ignore it and just watch the show.
I already have ideas for the crossover: Melissa shield’s older brother Eric becomes Kabuto in order to protect the quirkless and make a difference to hero society so he joins class 1-A, as well as fighting against the Worms (who in my version are inhanced nomus with intelligence and independence), Victor Crugen/TheBee an entitled and mentally unstable tech prodigy who’s Eric’s rival in the tech world and wants to destroy UA after he failed to buy it from principle Nezu, and Dark Kabuto a half nomu clone of Eric created from his DNA from Dr.Garaki who wants to destroy Eric and take his place.
Haven't read MHA yet, but when I do, I'll keep these comparisons in mind. Thanks.

Alright so I haven't seen many KR series yet. I've only seen Faiz, Kabuto, Gaim, X, Revice and Blade so far, so maybe that's why I like Kabuto alot. I loved it all the way through. Especially Tendou. I loved how he has all the skills just randomely. I liked pretty much all of the cast, but I agreed. The finale felt rushed and that spoof cook off with Kagamis dad was just not enjoyable to me, so I agreed it's not perfect but it's still so enjoyable to me

I've finished Kabuto last week, haven't watch the movie special yet. It's funny how we pretty much hold the same opinion on Faiz, Blade & Kabuto lol. I know you recommend me to watch Hibiki 1st. But after the 1st ep. I don't like it. Feels too anime for me & I really don't like the suit at all. I'll get back to it some other time. It has good artistic cinematography & interesting themes, I'll give them that.
Kabuto however, while also feels like an anime, but less so, which was why I don't have a hard time watching through it. I like the theme, I like the premise, the writing got worse & worse around the latter half with a lame ending, the characters are cringe in a funny way & I know they did it on purpose. I always laugh at Tendo & Kasama at how ridiculous they are. Tendo really reminded me of Stronger, except Tendo is comedic while Jo is just egotistical. I don't like the Descaville dude (Sasword) for being way too cringe. Kageyama & Kagami rivalry was fun to watch. I'm glad they didn't turn made Gon has a sort of lolita relationship with Kasama how how they did to that girl & Karis in Blade.
I like the action scenes in Kabuto more than Blade, they are actually fun to watch & the attacks feel strong or powerful. I know a lot of modern fans of the west likes to complain about sexist tropes. I think Kabuto managed to give a good reason why Hiyori tend to be a target of the Worms. I feel like if I watched the show back when it was on air the 1st time, I would've really liked Jyuka. I don't know, I just think half the time, she's there to be an eye candy for teenage boys, I think she did her job well as the cute younger sister to Tendo.
I also like how Kabuto seems to want to stick to its roots, to a story about fighting monsters. I like how it touched on the "kamen rider is a professional" by having ZECT riders like Bee & Gatack, or how Tendo has to train himself in order to earn the right to become Kabuto. I also like how Kabuto has very low amount of gimmick. By the time Hyper forms come, it's already near the end of the series, so there's actually a feeling of progression.
The bad writing really messes up the show, it also highlights why I don't like a lot of modern kamen rider shows, they tried too hard to be something than they really are, got overwhelmed, forgetting to end plot points properly. I also think they didn't play around with the clock up mechanic well enough. At 1st, it feels like they remove themselves from the world, then they tried to play around with it like how Kabuto made Kageyama felt like he killed a mutated worm with his pistol, then the show stop doing anything cool with the clock up other than occasionally some interesting cinematic. I also feel like there's too many riders in the show & you even can see they didn't handle the Hoppers & Drake properly. I think they were trying to make homages to the older shows with the Hoppers as well, but I don't get why do have to made them emo. Was it an attempt to insult the older fans? I don't know, I have watch some Decade-worshiping movie specials, I definitely feel that to be the case with modern kamen riders.
As for the songs, I only like Full Force. The intro is kinda cool, Next Level is good, but I just like Full Force more.
So, wikipedia said the next 1 is Den O. I think I've seen him in 2 movie specials, all I know is that he wears a fat suit & has 2 slapstick demons as side kicks who are also his weapons & the girl who played Manachan in Agito is back. Should I watch Den O or skip to Kiba? I've heard Kiba is a full on romance.
Well I'm glad you did enjoy most of it in the same way I did. Agreed with the Hoppers, I don't get their point. I'm not really a fan of Den-O, but I haven't watched it since it first aired, so it could be better than I remember.

I remember a long time ago Cartoon Network made an English dub for Kabuto's Kamen Rider the first rider with bug-man power and when they clock up they go super fast when they fight what are they Sonic the Hedgehog video game character because Sonic can run super fast same with the Flash now we got three characters that can have super fast powers sonic, Flash And kabuto

I’m sure a lot of Kamen Rider fans would agree with me, but Kamen Rider kabuto to me is like geats to you. Some of the characters aren’t all that likable. In this case the ones who are are treated like trash(except tendou’s sister) the designs of the rider suits the worms and the story are cool, it’s just that this doesn’t feel like a Kamen Rider season to me. I especially don’t like souji tendo. He keeps talking about himself like he’s going to be a god and treats no one other than his sister like equals. Would you agree kaiju?
That's kind of funny since I was initially comparing Kabuto to Geats, only that none of the characters in Geats were the least bit interesting.
As for something not feeling like a Kamen Rider season, that to me is what makes it great. The first half of the Heisei era was always breaking the traditional mold of a Toku show, which is why the 2000s is the best era of Kamen Rider for me. No series was a like.
I actually like Tendou because he's arrogant on top of being confident. He's the exact opposite of what was being done with the lead riders at the time, and it works thanks to his charisma. I also love how the series is still about Kogami more than Tendou despite him being the titular character. That's the exact opposite of Geats. The show shifted from being about Keiwa to Ace.

I hate to keep updating you since you probably have a huge schedule and I wouldn’t expect you to care about what parts I’m on, but I got to the arc where Kamen Rider sasword appears and compared to him, tendou is a better rider so far. Not to the point where I would call him by his first name though

It wuold be cool an kamen rider with an bug motif where bug like zombies from another dimension that becomed that way thanks to an cordyceps like giant lovecraftian mooshroom and the few non infected bugs from another dimention come to earth to have refuge and full fill is own intentions (the zombie ones and the normal ones are both monster looking but the zombie ones have some kind of mushrooms like leaches growing on theyr mouths or any other parts that doesn't have the thorax and the eyes are mostly gray) and the kamen riders have the power of the adn insects of the other dimention (who are similar to earth's bug) to transform and use is powers ben 10 style

How funny that Kamen Rider Kabuto has the same name as the Pokemon Kabuto I do know that there was a guy that worked on the Kamen Rider but also worked on Pokemon so I guess they stole the Pokemon character name

I can kind of see where you are coming from, but SPOILER WARNING SPOILER WARNING Hiyori was never a Native in the movie unverse. The means their parents were never killed by Natives 19 years prior to the show's events. Tendou's kick only rewrote the last seven years.
