- After the decision was made to end Gorenger, Toei quickly came up with a successor series that would feature a team of four heroes battling an evil crime syndicate as opposed to a terrorist organization. The results were not met with high praises, and as such, it was ultimately canceled. Is JAKQ really that bad? Or is it simply misunderstood? Watch to find out.

2 Facts:
1. To combat the declining ratings, one idea for a complete overhaul involved introducing a being known as "Empirian", a man from the future who controlled CRIME behind the scenes who was pursued by another future man named "Page One" which would join the team, taking them along in a time machine to smash the evil conspiracy. The concept was not quite used due to difference of opinions on the current direction of the world; Page One became Big One, Empirian became Shine, and the Time Travel aspect was dropped altogether.
2. Yoshitaka Tanba was originally offered the role of Akarenger, but he refused as he felt uncomfortable about striking poses in public, and his lack of a motorcycle license. The producers eventually convinced him to play Spade Ace, as he does not need to pose out of suit, and the character would be driving a car instead of a bike.
In case anyone is wondering about the Nintendo playing cards. Nintendo started out as a playing card company dating all the way back to 1889

JAKQ's silliness reached its peak when the cyborg hamster rolled along the sofa into a jump, urinated on the insta-noodle chef and landed back on the sofa with another roll.
Or at least that's how I remember it.

I really think JAKQ had one best ranger costume design. The Card theme was really working for them.
I wasn't too much a fan of the costumes, but they are unique.
I can imagine how Clover King would react after seeing a 9/11 joke in a YTP.

If Toei decide to use the card theme card in a future Sentai series and use elements from pre-Zyuranger Sentai seasons, guess i think that would be cool, right?
Depends which elements from Pre-Zyu shows they are using since the rangers were usually generic before Jetman.
It's just so funny that this series inspired the writers to make Tommy the leader when he became the MMPR White Ranger, and first non-Red as leader.
I honestly doubt they even took this series into account for that. They mostly made Tommy the leader because of the issues they were having with the 3 actors at the time.

CRIME organization sounds almost as silly as MAD from Inspector Gadget or even Panther Claw from Cutie Honey.
But then again considering this sentai had a cosplay Hitler parody I guess things could have been worse.
Though it did make me laugh considering how silly it was, just not a real threat compared to other villain groups that would come in later Sentai series.
Ah JAKQ the 2nd Super Sentai series as well as the shortest one.
Honestly I went into this show with very low expectations after viewing Goranger, only to have those expectations blown out of the water.
I absolutely love the first few episodes as not only there was tense, but they also involve crime lords, and unlike Goranger where they could transform by spinning, they spend most of the episodes as regular citizens and they only transform into JAKQ until the remaining quarter and have to do it inside of capsules, and it is by far my favorite aspect in this series. And I didn’t even found the transformation sequence to be that long, expectilly since it’s hardly shown during it's second half.
I like nearly every main character with my favorites being Daichi as Clover king, and Karen as Heart Queen.
Though I didn’t like Tamasaburo as he felt very forced.
And even when the series changed into a more lighthearted series I wasn’t really that bothered by the tone sift, as I was already getting kinda bored with the serious episodes so the change actually cept me on board since I tend to lose interest very easily if nearly every episode remained the same.
And there was actual episodes that I enjoyed such as the one with the haunted house, and the one with Iron Claw and Big One spending the entire episode with different outfits.
And while I wasn’t quite a fan of the last third as of how Big One quickly took the spotlight and turned the other rangers into side characters, I still found him to be genuinely funny due to his wall breaking powers, and thankfully the other Rangers do most of the fighting.
And the 2 part finale was a bit better than the previous one, as there is a lot more that happens, though the reveal of Shine was a bit disappointing since it was only a small robot, and I was expecting a powerful monster.
Though funny enough episode 8 the one with the flower monster didn’t had subtitles while the rest of the episodes I saw, did had subs, so I don’t know how you had episode 8 with subtitles.
The Music, and effects are alright especially giving the time, and I think I prefer the soundtrack to JAKQ a bit more.
And Crime I felt was Okay, not sure if I really like them more then the Black Cross Army.
But overall while it’s by no means the best season and has a few problems, I actually found myself really enjoying this season way more than I did with Goranger, which is saying something since it isn’t even the first season, and it was canceled after 35 episodes.
So I give this one a 7 out of 10. And I can’t wait to view Battle Fever J as it was technically the first Super Sentai entry, as well as the first one to have Mech battles.
That's odd that where you watched them did not have subs for episode 8 as Metallic had subbed the entire show. Glad you were able to enjoy the show more than I was.

@@gavinlucas9761 interestingly a full alien form of Shine was seen in concept art and was seen in a silhouette. I wonder if they didn't have time to make a full suit or if something else happened. I even wonder if the computer thing was the plan from the beginning and the originally it was to be revaled after the body was destroyed.
It would be interesting if they made another playing card-themed team.
I guess.
The idea of cyborgs as Rangers was also a neat idea.
Considering that is standard for Kamen Rider, Kikaider, Cyborg 007, and others, I didn't think it was all that original.

Iron Claw actually ends up otherthrowing Shrine in the end. Plus Shine takes full control because of Iron Claws failures.
So I guess you can say their co-leaders.
I'm still not 100% sure if Shine was real or not.
Well Iron Claw was the leader of the Earth branch and invasion until Shrine takes full control because of his failures.
Interesting how JAKQ stands for Jack, Ace, King and Queen in that order.
Maybe the creator of the show was a massive Yuka player. (Sorry I may have spell that wrong)
Maybe there is a 5th ranger called the Trump Card Ranger as the Joker is the highest card of value, then the Jack of the suit that is called the highest for the round and then the second Jack that is the other suit of the same color of the suit that was called the Trumps of the round.
That is how I often played Yuka with my grandparents when they were alive.
Oh and I did catch the reference to the cards being the Nintendo cards from Nintendo's history before they started making video games.
1977 was also around the time when their TV-Game consoles were around as they were just PONG Consoles playing many different versions of PONG.
Big One is also based off The Joker Card believe it or not because of his behavior and what he does rather then appearance.

So Kaiju, out of the ones you’ve watched have there been ones you thought you’d like but didn’t and vice versa?
Pretty much, at least Season 2 Tommy.
I didn't expect to love Gorenger and Flashman as much as I did. Same goes for Dynaman (though I haven't finished the series, so it could still fall apart). On the other hand, I really wanted to love Bioman, Ninninger, Zyuohger, Kyuuranger, and Lupin vs Pat, but they were crap.
Kaiju no Kami You know what’s funny about Tommy for me. I’ve watched the show since it first came on and Tommy was the one ranger I never really took note of and when he appeared in Dino Thunder I had no idea who he was and when I discovered the Ranger community I was surprised how popular he was. I loved the other Rangers, even the replacements, and I only remembered Tommy as the Green Ranger and White Ranger so I didn’t even remember him as Zeo Red or Turbo Red at all. Even the comics get a tad annoying with how much focus he gets so you can guess where I stand on the issue of Tommy.
Just going to list the ones I’ve watched: Zyuranger I was more curious and ended up liking it 4/5
Dairanger I did expect to like it and loved it 5/5
Megaranger I expected to like it and indeed liked it 4.5/5
Gingaman I was expecting a ho-hum season and it was in the middle for me 3/5
Timeranger I knew was copied for Time Force so I knew what to expect but was genuinely surprised at what was changed between them 5/5
Hurricaneger I really expected to be ho-hum and was surprised at how fun it was 4/5
Jetman I really expected to like but it wasn’t quite my cup of tea. The romance was cringey a lot, the moments that made me go “this is a kids show!?!?” and Ryu being way into his job wasn’t something I liked so I ended up liking the others more. I did enjoy the villains and the Commander, she was practically the sixth ranger and she was so badass! My score is a 3.5/5 but I can say I do see why people like it, it’s just not my thing.
In defense of Ryu, he was way into his job because it was what was keeping him distracted from thinking about Rie's death. Plus, there are a lot of Japanese people who are way into their jobs so much so that they will up and abandom their family over it.
Kaiju no Kami I understood his reason for it, it just didn’t make him a character I could get into a whole lot and this is in a team where I had a hard time picking as my favorite of the bunch so it really says something when I picked the mentor as my favorite ranger.
From what I’ve read Dynaman still goes strong.

Most likely your problems come from how short it was due to a more darker tone. Seriously there is an episode that focuses on drug use.
Plus they were desperate to change the tone a bit.

Well I'm seeing this the day after my birthday. I'll just take your word for a lot of this because I've never seen this series other then clips here and there. Like the Hitler thing that was funny and the one where the girl dances and says "SEXY" that's it. Also when the Gokaigers use the suits. Man, it was funny seeing the "Rainbow" suit being worn by Mao's character Luka. But she still was super cute using it. I LOVE HER.

I liked jakq because the suits are way cooler than goranger and the lounge,disco,rock music is relaxing and unique. Very good in depht review, looking forward in future for battle fever and denziman :)

If adapted into PR [Maybe in a comic?] I do like the concept of crime fighting cyborgs from the 70,s as the plot, its more fun/solid/and its own thing than MMPR 69. I can definitely see Iron Claw and Shine be the Shredder and Krang of PR. Plus a Rainbow ranger, and playing card morphers.

Me, if I were Spade Ace when Big One joins the team: Hold up. Just because you're our new commander doesn't mean you're the leader of this team. You can sit in the back because you're technically a Sixth Ranger. (Which is kinda true, considering that J.A.K.Q refers to the first four members of the team)

@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Just saying that with the year JAKQ was made, along with this being a still not fully realised idea for childrens entertainment , the producers, series director and writters were throwing just about everything at the show to get something good. JAKQ was still an experiment , and I agree with you that it lacks any focus.
As for the toys. Though the show is very uneven, the toys from the show were diecast, of a very high quality, and are now very fondly remembered.

Power Rangers Turbo suffered the same problem.

Well it could’ve gotten weirder and crazier as originally there was to be time travel Involved in the second half of the show. Originally Shine would be a man from the future who operated from behind the scenes and came to the present to take full control and conquer the Earth and Big one would’ve been Star One or Super One who followed him to the present to stop him. He would’ve still Had been the new leader but it seems it probably would’ve been because he knows about the future technology since he is also from there. It was cut and changed due to conflicts about the Universe of the show.
That sounds like it would have been much better than what we actually got.
9:43 it’s like how Batman solved all the problems in the 60s show or how McGarrett did the same in the original Five O

I get why people might have a problem with the show but I still consider it a fun watch and I'll take Adam West Batman over Christian Bale Batman any day (I can't stand Bale's Bat voice sounds like he has marbles in his mouth not to mention apart from the Dark Knight the Nolan trilogy doesn't really hold up that well)
lol I will agree Bale was not a great Batman, but I disagree about the movies. Well, the first two anyway. I still think The Dark Knight is the best super hero movie out there with The Winter Soldier right behind it. Begins is also great. I have no love for Rises though. **** that movie!

A hero that has no weaknesses is a boring hero. Maybe some kids back then like the flawless hero type but nowadays a hero that doesn't have weaknesses and shortcomings is very unrelatable and boring.
Or if they have no weaknesses, they need to be written in a way to counteract that aspect, like Superman. The dude is awesome when writers can write him with mental weaknesses as opposed to physical ones.

JAKQ was supposed to go with a serious sentai show, but it's an unfortunate show that didn't get the ratings and had to change its route.

Didn't Big One become the unofficial leader of multi team anniversary specials until Aka Red was introduced?
The only one he was the leader of was in Gaoranger vs Super Sentai.

Jakq is the Super Sentai equivalent of the 1974 Kamen Rider Amazon: a show that presented itself with interesting ideas but failed to execute any of them. The show had potential to be great with unique ideas for its episodes with topics such as terrorism, human trafficking, and drug dealings but the execution in each episode was atrocious as each episode had horrendously slow pacing. I’m not sure if that’s how all crime dramas are but the episodes were just soooo boring. The only episode I found myself enjoying in its first 15 episodes was episode 11 because it had easily the best pacing out of any of the early episodes. Everything after episode 15 is atrocious save for the episode where Banba and Iron Claw play dress up for an episode.
As for the characters, this show has probably one of the most boring ranger casts in Sentai. I liked the idea behind Sakurai’s character with the idea of Karen’s tragedy being what lead to him sacrificing his humanity to being a hero but once again the execution absolutely fails him as he ends up being one of the most bland red senshis of the early sentai. For Ryuu, the only impression that his character left on me was feeling bad for his actor for having to play in such terribly unfunny comedy scenes. As for Bunta, just like Sakurai, there was potential for the show to do something interesting with him after what went down in episode 5 but instead the show reduces him to unfunny comedy. With Karen, the only impression she left on me was a less capable version of Peggy from Gorenger. Banba was easily the best and worst thing about the show. He was the best because he brought much needed energy to the show and because he’s Hiroshi Miayuchi but the worst because his introduction was what truly made the show into a comedy show and turned the other Jakq members into side characters in their own show. Joker was just an inferior Commander Edogawa from Gorenger but unlike Edogawa who did more than just being a 2 dimensional military commander, Joker does absolutely nothing the whole show save for that one episode. Tamasaburou might just be the worst side character in Super Sentai second only to Sukehachi from Sun Vulcan. The villains, just like the rest of the show, had good ideas but were executed terribly. The only significant thing about Iron Claw was that he was played by the great Masashi Ishibashi and Shine just might be the worst villain leader in the franchise’s history.
All in all, much like the 1974 Kamen Rider Amazon, Jakq was a show with good potential ruined by its execution and the show runners not having a clear vision for the show. It’s not the worst season, but it’s definitely on my top 10 least favorite Sentai. 1.5/5 GUIS for me.
I have yet to check out Amazon. I hope to do so next year.

I've only seen Turbo raw as well and I thought it was awful. The villains were uninteresting and the ranger cast was quite one dimensional. However, we'll see if my tastes have changed when I finally watch the show subbed (probably next year assuming Wandering Moonbeams finishes it).
To be fair on Big One it probably came as something unexpected which could explain your problems with him. At least he is famous.

I think Boukenger is about average at best. They didn't know what to do with all of their villains and BoukenSilver really brought the show down.

Jakq at first to me had a different tone from goranger that let stand on its own two feet despite its immense flaws such as the red ranger being a bland character however the tone shifts killed this show for me

Kaiju no Kami like I really liked clover king and I thought his actor did an amazing with the role he was given
King was not bad. I wish they had done more with his underwater background.

I'd say her and King were about equal, but she definitely had a lot more story than I expected.

The monster, Fuhrer Crocodile, idolizes Hitler and wants to put everyone into concentration camps. The rangers got captured and were going to be executed, so he dressed up as Hitler to distract the monster.

None. I won't be watching Mystic Force until after I rewatch Magiranger, but first I need to rewatch Ninja Storm and Dino Thunder.
I watched most of the show when it first aired, but I wasn't a fan of it, so I didn't bother with every episode and I didn't pay close attention to some of the those I did watch.

Do You Recommend Any Website That Has Tokusatsu
Kissasian is the main source for pretty much all of the subbed of shows, some of the rips on there aren't the greatest, as they could be low quality tv rips or have bad bootleg subs
nyaa.si pretty much has every toku raw/subbed only in torrents and some are quite slow.
Krdl.moe for direct download links of subbed toku (may not have every show), and unless you have get a premium membership, you can only download 2 eps at a time.
Otherwise you'd probably have to go to the groups who subbed the shows directly on their blogspot. Personally i'd recommend this or nyaa but if ur internet isn't the fastest, kissasian and krdl is probably the best alternative.
I am pretty much against Kissasian. Not only do they not remove shows that have been legally licensed in the US, but they also will ban your IP if you use ad blocker despite them being a bootleg site.
Nyaa is great, as is Anidex. As Guts also mentioned, Krdl, though I was under the impression they shut down.. Also, I am constantly posting links on my blog to fansubber sites that have completed Toku shows. It's www.creativitybydesignllc.com.

Kiss Asian runs on servers in eastern Europe, and the site as well as Kiss Anime are well know to dump Malware. They also are worse then torrent, because it is the same as paying bootleggers. Eather torrent or buy the official products.

Are you talking about from my Timeranger review of the coverage of when they talked about JAKQ in their anniversary episode? If so, then yes, as that was subbed by SHout! Factory while the actual series itself was fansubbed by MetallicSubs.
