My tips...Ditch the Keurig. Use a French press and recycle the coffee grounds in the garden. Use microfiber rags instead of paper towels. Don't buy single serving anything, like small yogurts- and recycle or reuse the larger containers that you do buy. I use quart size yogurt tubs to freeze broth, berries etc. Make your own beeswax wrap to use as plastic wrap. Recycle styrofoam packaging at the UPS store. No plastic water bottles. Don't use one use items, use metal straws, cloth napkins, real plates, etc.

I use a reusable k-cup pod and it’s way cheaper and doesnt go to the landfills. You get the best of both worlds!

I bought a bidet and made family cloths from old flannel sheets. I still use toilet paper for number 2 but I'm still saving on toilet paper. Helps save money because now I don't have to call the septic guy to pump it out as often.

I also try to be more concious about my wastes. I have glass containers, my personal water bottle. If I have food wastes from peeling potatoes, bananas or cracking eggs, I scrap them not in a garbage bin, but on my garden beds to fertilize them. I'm happy to use our local products. Though I live in the North, we've got rich forests which supply us with mushrooms, berries, birch juice in spring, pine cones can be used like medicine and a lot of more.
I love the idea of foraging in the woods for medicine. Mother nature always has the best remedies.

For the first time in my life I love the suggestion of baking soda and coconut oil for deodorant and all over smell better stuff thanks for the suggestion!

One other tip is to reduce using plastic forks, spoons and knives. I carry a foldable cutlery set in my puse in a cotton bag so i can use it where they do not have reusable cutlery.

you can also purchase reusable mesh bags for lose fruit or veggies; also beewax wraps to cover dishes with food to store, etc. using old clothes or towels cut up rather than paper towels; thrifting for home decor and furniture, etc. also rather than buying cheaply made furniture that may fall apart quickly and thrifted gives personality; reuse what you can; shop your home rather than continually buying; buy used books; share items with others rather than buying everything; so many ways to not only save our environment but also our money. Buying raw milk from approved raw milk provider in reusable glass jars is always a big saver. It's a bit pricier, but even with three children I feel like they benefit from drinking it more and it saves our planet.
what about if you do have food scraps, using for mulch for flowers or other gardening plants?
Another tip I learned is to keep a bucket in the shower to catch the cold water before I hop in. I can later use the water to clean floors, rinse off kids shoes, wipe counters, etc.
and to flush the toilet :) Save many liters

- You can also freeze extra fruits and veggies before they go bad to minimize food waste. - Buy a Berkey or other water filters to get clean filtered water without having to purchase bottle. - Dr. Bronner soap is also very useful for laundry, I add water to make hand soap, body wash, shampoo. - Baking soda can be used to wash veggies / fruits, toothpaste, and others

We recycle aluminum cans,glass jars, plastic. We save our scraps and coffee grounds and put in the garden. We could do better, but that’s a good start I think!
I have become more & more environmentally conscious; especially becoming vegan 9-1/2 years ago.
All these tips you have provided are easy to follow and manageable. This is now where I need to make more of an effort.
I find that paper towel cleans very well however I know this is definitely not an environmentally conscious choice. Cloths leaving lint and streaks. What do you suggest? Also, what laundry detergent do you use and toilet paper as well? Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Robbie, Great questions. Try microfiber cloth, old cut up T-shirts or old cut up towels for cleaning rags that don't leave behind lint. I use Meyers for my laundry detergent. It is a bit more expensive than other brands but, it last much longer, there are not scents or chemicals in it that irritate my skin. Thanks for watching!

My sister gave me 3 glass water bottles. My water and tea tasted so much better than with the plastic bottles. Also, I can leave it in my truck in the summer and not be worried about chemicals leeching into my water.

Your tips are fabulous. However, I'm in my early 60s with many health issues. I'm on a fixed income as well. Can't afford quite a few of the things you suggest.
I'm doing several things you suggested already.
How do you combat the strong perfumed scent on used clothing? I can’t get rid of the offensively strong odour?
white vinegar is my go-to for all odor. I would try washing the clothes in hot water with 1/4 cup white vinegar.
If you find cleaning your French Press a bit of a drag, consider switching to a Melita. You just pour hot water over the cone, lined with a paper filter (2c/per), then simply remove the filter with the coffee & throw in the recycle if you have food recycling in your area. Local waste facilities use food waste to make natural fertilizer, so what we take from the soil returns to the soil.
Laundry soap - the many plastic jugs make me sick to think of. I keep supplies on hand to make homemade laundry detergent, but I also purchase laundry strips, which are extremely space saving and come in a paper package. I'll be sending laundry strips with my son when he goes off to college. I air dry all my clothing, except blankets and towels. Since I live in a condo, I use drying racks to dry all my clothes, but I find blankets and towels stay a little "crisp" when dried in the house. They dry nicely outdoors, but I don't have a line outside because it's joint property. I make my own toothpaste, deodorant, and have tried many recipes for facewash and moisturizer, some of which I've had success with.
Plastic water bottles are recyclable, in Ireland we have a bin for recycling and nearly everyone brings reusable bags to the supermarket, as plastic bags have to be paid for, but I never see anyone getting them, plus you don't need face wipes, I use a face flannel, wash cloth
Please teach us how to make cleaning products for our homes. I only used dawn before covid and now I am buying too many chemicals.

I penpal. Some I turn envelope inside out, tape, cover text in card with blank label, reuse to write letter. I get most things from thrift store/rummage sales. Even my penalize cards, stickers & fun tuck ins.

I use about a half cup white vinegar to 2 gallons of water to soak the bottom of the guinea pig cage. The smell is completely eliminated.
Wash your sneakers in the washing machine before throwing out dirty sneakers. Make sure to flip them top side down and cover with towels or they will float on top of the water and not come clean. I washed my youngest child's sneakers after removing the inserts (twice). The smell was completely gone and they are much brighter.

@@carylhalfwassen8555 I am talking about food baggies, that I try to resuse and wash as much as possible. So a silicone bag would work for me. I do have a cat, I do use a paper (lunch bag) bag when I clean the cat box out.

Stop using paper towels, make cotton cloth out of old TShirts, use newspapers for windows. Stop using swifter mops and mop with an old towel wrapped around a large squeegee and warm water and vinegar. Clean counters with water and peroxide.

Connie, never use your fingers to take cream from a jar: the bacteria from the finger will spread in the cream. As you have the cream for 6 months... Get a little plastic spatula and wipe it off with a piece of toilet paper instead.
