    Entire installation of a Tile floor using Mapei Mapeigaurd UM and a Large format tile.
    Mapegard UM is an uncoupling membrane, that can be used to waterproof a floor by applying Mapeguard ST sealing tape at the seams and at the floor to wall junction. In this video I explain how this tile underlayment works and how to install it on a plywood subfloor. A polymer modified thinset is used to install the uncoupling membrane to the plywood, the thinset must meet ANSI A 118.11 standards, Mapei Ultraflex 2 is such a thinset and is the one I used in this application. The tile installed on the mat was a large format tile, so I used Mapei Ultraflex LFT as my Mortar. In my opinion, an uncoupling membrane like Mapegard UM is far superior to a cement backer board, which has none of the benefits that Mapegaurd provides such as lightweight, waterproofing and vapor pressure-equalizing as well as crack suppression. It can also be installed on Young concrete and single-layer 3/4" plywood subfloors with joist spacing of up
    to 19.2". The design incorporates a surface mesh which is heat welded to the mat, which in conjunction with the cavity design of the mat, makes it easy to fill. All tile installed by Sal DiBlasi, Elite-tile Company, in the Boston North Shore area. Hey Sal love the videos I am putting tile in my bathrooms that currently have linoleum, I decided to use an uncoupling mat (custom’s redguard uncoupling mat) and my question is can it go over linoleum if I clean and sand it to make it rough? In one room I peeled off the linoleum and the backing is so hard to get off I was wondering if I can at least lay the mat over that as long as I sand it?

    • @SalDiBlasi
      @SalDiBlasi  3 года назад

      Not sure about the custom product, but you can go over linoleum with Schluter ditra if you install it with a fast setting mortar and the linoleum meets all other requirements, like being a single layer, not being a cushion back, being well adhered, not being a perimeter glue etc. I would however still advise removing it. If the vinyl is very old, sanding can be a problem as it may contain Asbestos, anything predating about 1985 may contain it.

Could I use a decoupling membrane on some MR MDF to tile onto for a concealed cupboard door do you think. The wife wants built in cupboards in the walls but she wants them hidden. Sal, i love your videos. Do you prefer to set a certain part of a floor one day and then come back the next day to wrap it up? I’m new to the tile industry as an installer myself, I’ve been a helper before and run a contracting business. We’re starting to specialize in our installs with schluters products and all. Just wanted to see if you saw benefit in doing that for the floors. I love the attention to detail you have.

    • @SalDiBlasi
      @SalDiBlasi  4 года назад

      Can't go by me, I never rush anything these days, I take my time, however if I can get it done in a day without killing myself, I will. Plan the floor out to give the best layout and then do as much as you can without compromising the quality. Some floors, just by the layout of the area, will not lend themselves to a one day install, like this one.

      Look at the spec sheets for both, usually it is in the bond strength and sheer strength. The will always meet the standard that applies to them, but a cheaper product will usually have a lesser value than the higher priced product.

    • @krehbein
      @krehbein 4 года назад

      Sal DiBlasi Will do, if the numbers are close, for a typical shower or floor I can’t see a benefit in getting a little more bond strength since both numbers tend to be high enough.

    Sal I still use a wood cement float to rub the membrane into the mud but always notices how much time that roller would save me. It looks like you are using a 50pound roller plus a bag of thinset witch made me think that would come close to a 100 pound roller. I have a 100 pounder that I use for gluedown carpet and all sheet goods as well I would like to start using my 100 to save time and I am 54 so anything to make things easier-quicker is always welcome. Sal would you use a 100 pounder if you had it? Starting a 1200 sq this morning and want to try it out but always a little scared when I try something new lol

    • @SalDiBlasi
      @SalDiBlasi  3 года назад

      It is a schluter roller, The roller itself is very light, the weight comes from the bag of thinset. 100 pound roller is not recommended for uncoupling mats, too heavy.

    Great video as always Sal. Two questions for you, if you don’t mind. I see you start off straight and square by laying the first row of tiles against a screed bar that is held in place by boxes of tiles. How do you get the clips under that first row of tiles, on the side that was against the screed bar? Do you do that with the oscillating tool, after the thinset dries? For 12”x24” tiles, how many clips do you use per tile? It’s a little difficult to see with the time lapse video. Thanks as always for your help.

    • @SalDiBlasi
      @SalDiBlasi  4 года назад +2

      Once the tile is in place, move the straight edge away from the tile, insert the clips while the mortar is still fresh. Often times you will continue your tile the same day from that row of tiles. At the end of the day, with the clips inserted move the straight edge back against the clips to hold them in place. Next day move the straight edge and start tiling.
