Its entertaining to speculate who would be the drummer for a new RUSH...but...it stops there. Geddy and Alex will never EVER get on stage... or in the studio again...to create new RUSH music. Could they get a drummer who can play as good as Neil? I will honestly say theres alot of incredible drummers out there who are on the same technical and execution level Neil is....but thats where it stops. There will never EVER be a creative genius out there to rival Neils songwriting and lyrical skills which made rush RUSH. And furthermore, I believe Geddy and Alex will never try to replace Neil...for the complete respect for what Neil created. It would not be fair to anyone.
In 2008, I was at a bar in Etobicoke, ON. I couldn't help but notice a dude just casually playing an acoustic while stretched out across two bar stools. I asked the server what the deal was, and he casually replied, "Oh, that's Alex Lifeson. Yeah, we keep a guitar here for him. He likes to play it sometimes." Sure enough, it was him. Shy at first, I eventually approached him to offer some general praise. Despite my interruption, he chatted with me for about 15 minutes, topping it off with "It was nice to meet you". Just one example of how cool and grounded they are. I doubt I'll forget that one...

There will never be another Rush ever. The highest tech band and self made. Nobody had ever controlled their own production process at this time. It was their own company. The only way to be or give it up and do not do it at all.
This is the ultimate Rush song in my opinion. The complexity of the music, the true to life lyrics, the grandness of the synth at the end, it just can't get any better.
There is no better example of what is meant when someone says "They were tight!" Not a note out of place, everybody killing it, and doing it live...just wow!

What Geddy does at 4:28 to 4:39 (pulling away from the boards and just killing it on bass) just makes this version for me. That dude is from another planet.
He has a moment to pull away and just let go in the moment while Alex takes over for the solo. A moment of easy playing (for HIM) and it sounds so good...

This, IMO, is one of the best versions of Subdivisions on RUclips. Crystal clear sound and the guys at the top of their game. Oh, it brings back memories of the first time I saw them in Toronto for the Moving Pictures tour. In the last 40 years, I’ve seen well over 1,000 club, outdoor, indoor, stadium and festival shows ranging from amateurs and up and comers to the top touring acts and, instrumentally, they are second to no one. The greatest composer of drums in the last 40+ years and one of the greatest drummers. He also happens to be one of the greatest lyricists. A truly underrated guitarist, only by the music rag-mags who is universally respected by other guitar gods. And a lead singer, bassist and keyboardist who is just so insanely talented. Treat yourself to this outstanding version by listening through a headset. You can here every note of every instrument in this version. And they’re Canadian too, eh.
Ditto. Used to play it (badly) with a band of friends in high school back in the late 80s. Such a great summer. I was on keys and loved that moment it gave me of booming 7/8s which started it off... and the synth solos were so much fun. Taught me tons about what incredible songwriting could be.
In my opinion, Subdivisions by Rush is equivalent to The Frayed Ends of Sanity by Metallica. Both are a statement of "yeah, go ahead, let's see you try to cover this song! 😂..."
Yes Indeed 100% Agreed that this is Rushes Best Song. Only after Limelight, in my opinion. I've seen them 7 times Live, Starting at the Permanent Waves tour, then the Moving Pictures Tour, Best Album & Tour, In My Opinion. Caught em last on the signals Tour🎶 🎵 👏💙💜🙌😁
He was one of the few musicians back then who didn't go through some messed up stuff like others did. I am glad because Rush has a huge discography with so many . I was trying to learn this song on keys and man some of the odd bar numbers in parts make it so hard to switch stuff in some parts. A good free synth for this is the patch "LAURIE" on the free downloadable synth called Dexed. One of the top free synths I have found I think.
Harrison Crutcher Funny thing is that’s Canada in a nutshell. People living for a long time because they never smoke or so drugs. Subdivisions gave me a second chance at life. Pearts lyrics infused me with a zeal for life.....and a reason for continuing this conundrum of insanity. Thank you Neil. RIP.
One of my favorite bands of all time, Neil Peart's drum parts of these songs are so complicated and unique, that's why Rush stands out from other bands. RIP Mr. Peart
Discovered these guys with my friend our junior year in HS in 2000 and saw them for our first time at their r30 show in 04 and it changed our lives, not only was the show great but the fellow fans who were most friendly bunch of people we ever met, they all couldn’t believe that two 21 year olds were there to see the show. We were some of the youngest and I’ll never forget it!
Love that Geddy changed his name to Geddy, out of love for his mother, love that he stood in for the late Chris Squire when Yes were inducted into the R+RHOF, love that I was able to grow up listening to these three and love that I can still get away with hammering out Exit Stage Left into the wee hours of the morning. We are lucky to have experienced greatness, and luckier still to realise it!
What an awesome performance of Subdivisions, my favourite RUSH song. This is what happens when music and friendship overpowers ego and competition. These guys love their fans as much as we love them. A lot has happened in the world recently; this is the song I listen to when I go to my "happy place". Same as when I was a teenager (who didn't fit in) growing up in beautiful Alberta. If Geddy or Alex happen to read this comment, I would like to say to them... Thank You.
It's not just their technical proficiency it's how well they fit all of that technical proficiency together...... Amazing! Hard to believe Neil's no longer with us in the flesh... Thankfully we have the vids and music to remember by....
The perfect marriage of rock and synth. And God-in-heaven Neil Peart’s drumming!!! To call him brilliant or expert is underselling. Perfect rarely applies to anything. But his drumming was flawless and unrivaled.
This version of subdivisions is the best in my opinion. Tempo is perfect, Geddys voice is calm and controlled, his synth sounds amazing and no weird effects, the bass is dark and thumpy, and neils drums are tuned probably better than any DW kit live except for the r30 one. Shits just perfect
Now that James Brown is gone, I nominate Mr. Geddy Lee as "The Hardest Working Man in Showbusiness." His singing is fantastic, he is playing the keyboard and when he begins to pluck his base, the walls threaten to come down. I know of no other human on the face of the earth who could do that and do it so well!
I went to see them in 1978 at the Tarrant County Convention Center in Ft.Worth Texas not knowing who they really were....MAN !! that concert really had an affect on me...the fact that 3 guys could make all these different sounds was something to behold !!!! I was 16 at that time,i'm 57 now and I never get tired of listening to RUSH !!
Cool story. RUSH is for intelligent listeners. It's so intricate mysterious and multi thought process with so many changes within one song. I hear ya. Rush is UNIQUE!!!!

The professor behind the drums... No emotion, no expression on his face.. he's ALL BUISNESS on stage. The greatest drummer of all time ..
There's no best but he'd definitely be one of 4 faces on the Mt Rushmore of rock drumming if it existed❤
No emotion on his face, I agree. But there's LOT of emotion on his music, definetly more than what most performers give.
As Sammy Davis Jr. Once said " Thank God for videotape!" Neil Peart will live forever on it.

Drummers like that come around once in a lifetime.
This videos makes one realize just how good this 3 piece band was and how unbelievable a drummer Neil Peart was. RIP
Neil Peart's drums will live in the ears of Rock n Roll 10 years past forever.....perfect tone, just perfect.....
RIP Professor. Amazing bass. Geddy really thumps it. Alex Lifeson always a genius. Brilliant piece. And I am devastated.
There will never be another like Neil Peart.
Oh hell yes! That's our national anthem.
Can all the Canadians in here please stand up! 🇨🇦
When I took my wife to her first Rush concert, she couldn’t believe there was only three guys playing all that sound
Thank You.
Hey... check this version of my son: ruclips.net/video/iYxBp3AYZqA/видео.html a guy with just 17 years old. Thank you.
When the video for this song came out in 1982, I immediately became a Rush fan. Describes exactly my situation in high school.
Virtuoso performance is an understatement.
Miss Neil so much. There's nothing that compares to watching him play with the overhead cam. His precision was incredible and unmatched.
It's not just their technical proficiency it's how well they fit all of that technical proficiency together...... Amazing!
Hard to believe Neil's no longer with us in the flesh... Thankfully we have the vids and music to remember by....
Rush ! the biggest rock'n roll trio in all times!❤
The perfect marriage of rock and synth. And God-in-heaven Neil Peart’s drumming!!! To call him brilliant or expert is underselling. Perfect rarely applies to anything. But his drumming was flawless and unrivaled.
Perfect song ,perfect musician
What a generation we were to have experienced RUSH
Has anyone ever stopped to think just how lucky we were to see RUSH ?
This version of subdivisions is the best in my opinion. Tempo is perfect, Geddys voice is calm and controlled, his synth sounds amazing and no weird effects, the bass is dark and thumpy, and neils drums are tuned probably better than any DW kit live except for the r30 one. Shits just perfect

R.I.P Neil Peart 😞
Now that James Brown is gone, I nominate Mr. Geddy Lee as "The Hardest Working Man in Showbusiness." His singing is fantastic, he is playing the keyboard and when he begins to pluck his base, the walls threaten to come down. I know of no other human on the face of the earth who could do that and do it so well!
They started and became Canada's Finest.
They Finished and became 1 of Earth's Finest !
What a Rush !
This will always be my favorite song by Rush!
