I always loved Rush and knew they were Canadian but before I read Geddy Lee's autobiography had no idea they were from Toronto and that Geddy Lee was Jewish like me. There were a lot of Holocaust survivors in the Jewish community of Toronto when I was growing up in my grandparents' generation. A lot of my friend's grandparents were survivors and one of my friend's parents was a hidden child during the war. My mom remembers sitting and listening to the stories of the family members that her parents and grandparents helped bring over to Toronto after the war and having nightmares that the Nazis would come to take her away in the night. Even though Canada is known for its politeness and Toronto is known for being a very multicultural city now at the time the antisemitism Geddy speaks about was very prevalent and accepted. My Mom said people would ask to see her horns and her tail because they actually believed Jewish people had them (and this was the 1950s!) It' amazed me to read about this. I always thought of the places I knew or where I grew up or the community I grew up in as the furthest thing from rock and roll. Shows you how wrong you can be to assume.

“Don’t feel the hunger, to weak to cry” such a heart and gut wrenching lyric. Neil did THE duties of a song writer, to take the personal and make it universal, and to take the universal and make it personal
For people saying that Alex wrote the lyrics, it was actually Neil who composed them, though he got some of his inspiration from the first-hand account of Geddy's mum who was a holocaust surviver.
Alex never wanted to be a lyricist in Rush after 2112....However, in this song, the emotional loud fury of the music is all Alex with Geddy the glue welding the lyrics, tone, and melody together to evoke the subject of the song.
The lyrics are very personal to them. Geddy's parents were Polish holocaust survivors who met at Auschwitz. They were separated and moved to different camps, but promised to find each other again, and indeed did after the war. Geddy related the story to Neil, who wrote the lyrics.
noobyliw how is that irrelevant I don't think you know how to use that word . Geoff tate and Dio are both extremely good live making them relevant to what you said about geddy you pompous fuck
I read in an old rock magazine that he can actually juggle tennis balls at the same time as well. But he only does that in practices. He never wanted to bring it on stage. Thought he would look like a show off.
Look at the professor with his hat on backwards, headphones on, and eyes closed. I'm so glad for the few times I got to see Rush live. Thank you Neil for your wonderful lyrics and for helping Geddy and Alex get me through my teens way back in the 80s. I have not gotten tired of your music yet and don't plan to in the future.
Neil was the best drummer in the world Even so he still had a coach who was trying to make him better What dedication And all his loses through his career He is another Canadian hero Love you neil
As a Drummer myself, the last thing I need is someone telling me what to do!!!!!! Drummers are free spirits and the only person we need to listen to is, ourselves. Neil was technically proficient, not great. With all due respect to RUSH fans, they are too clinical and sterile for my taste in Rock music. it's too clean and careful. A lot of Canadians and Amerians probably aren't very familiiar with English Rockers STATUS QUO, they are massive everywhere else in the universe. I recommend you listen to their massive album output from 1968 to present day. 33 studio albums. Their double LIVE album released in 1977 is the best LIVE album ever recorded. Francis Rossi on Lead Guitar and vocals, he plays with soul Rick Parfitt is the best and greatest Rhythm Guitarist in history and a great singer. From psychedelic Rock in the 60's to Stoner Hard Rock of '70 & '71 to Hard Rockin' Boogie all thru the 70's and into the highs and lows of the 80's and 90's then to hit back with some of the greatest Rock albums ever made in the Noughties and 2010's. Superlatives cannot describe how great STATUS QUO are. Honest, genuine, sincere tight punchy raw Rock n Roll that's STATUS QUO!!!! The Sex Pistols liked STATUS QUO because of their attitude to the music industry and the world in general. The QUO basically said ' if you don't like what we're doing then you can get fuck#d!!!!!!' Being technical and intricate doesn't make you a great Guitarist or Drummer. In fact it lacks warmth and feeling and humanity. RUSH fans need to listen to RAW POWER by THE STOOGES from 1973. The production and mix is dirty and mirky and really filthy. It is a 'thing' of great beauty. On STATUS QUO albums you can hear the boys yelling to each other and making real human sounds whilst they record 'LIVE' in the studio. QUO don't do 50 over dubs like REO SPEEDWAGON. or RUSH. Punk n New Wave was a mule kickin' against the sterility of bands like RUSH
On July 2nd 2021, Geddy's mother, Mary Weinrib has passed away to who this song was dedicated to along with her husband. Rest easy, and thank you for giving us Geddy miss!
For RUSH fans...we are pleased to have the Best ROCK Drummer, the Best ROCK Bass, but we LOVE Alex Lifeson as he was the BEST ROCK Guitar of the WORLD.
First heard this one during a day on the beach with some high school friends. Someone had a radio that was tuned to a classic rock station making its way through a "500 best rock songs of all time" Memorial Day Weekend countdown. The grim-sounding lyrics and intensity of the music were so out-of-place with my surroundings that they couldn't help but grab my attention. I was already familiar with a couple of Rush's "greatest hits", the ones that were/are standard radio fare, but that was the moment when I realized that there was a lot more to this band.
All that we can do is just survive All that we can do to help ourselves Is stay alive… Ragged lines of ragged grey Skeletons, they shuffle away Shouting guards and smoking guns Will cut down the unlucky ones I clutch the wire fence Until my fingers bleed A wound that will not heal - A heart that cannot feel - Hoping that the horror will recede Hoping that tomorrow - We’ll all be freed Sickness to insanity Prayer to profanity Days and weeks and months go by Don’t feel the hunger - too weak to cry I hear the sound of gunfire At the prison gate Are the liberators here - Ao I hope or do I fear? For my father and my brother, it’s too late But I must help my mother Stand up straight… Are we the last ones left alive? Are we the only human beings To survive?…

While driving Uber and LA I picked up four people and I had rush playing on my stereo. The album Hold Your Fire and they all were like that's our band they were all from Canada and one of them asked me what was my favorite Rush song. Geddy goes into incredible detail in his autobiography about his parents experience. My great uncle liberated a camp as part of a US division and it just makes you sick to know what all happened.
This piece of information was published recently ... "Camp/Sector Level: a group of shelters such as schools, community buildings within a camp/sector (max 50 high-risk individuals per single green zone) where high-risk individuals are physically isolated together"
Studio version was poorly produced, with a weak distant drum sound that made Neils drums sound dead. Etched vocals and guitars make the mix almost unlistenable on a high end system. No punch or dynamics Production sound was much better on power windows but Grace had better material ironically Fortunately snakes and arrows live captured a few songs from grace, which sound much better than the studio
Every single live performance I've seen of Rush has been phenomenal so I'm not quite sure how you say it's one of the best because they're all so damn good
Neil is at the height of his powers as a drummer here. My god he's incredible. Unparalleled as a drummer for about 15 years I reckon. Sure, there are some who could surpass him now but back then he was KING.

I will never ever forget those laser lights in the background,as long as i live. This was a defining moment in my life.
Me too
Same here, this was the first video i ever saw of rush, i was blown away
Saw them live in Dallas,Tx headlined this same tour. First time age 15. Lasers were cool
Early during the piece, the lasers flashed, along with a crash, immediately upon mention of a gunshot. The effect is very powerful.
I love seeing the comments by people over the years and how they still love the music and years and years later.. we still love it.
Alex is such an Underrated guitarist one of the best !
What an incredible band that was! thank God for saving Geddy Lee's Mothers from the Evils hand and make this trinity union possible!
“Don’t feel the hunger, to weak to cry” such a heart and gut wrenching lyric. Neil did THE duties of a song writer, to take the personal and make it universal, and to take the universal and make it personal
What other rock group has ever addressed the Holocaust or the evils of totalitarianism.
Rush makes rock fully relevant.
Thanks for everything.
R.I.P, Neil Peart.
For people saying that Alex wrote the lyrics, it was actually Neil who composed them, though he got some of his inspiration from the first-hand account of Geddy's mum who was a holocaust surviver.
I've always felt such a personal impression from this song. Then learning of Geddy's mom's story...it's just raw and ripping and pure.
Alex never wanted to be a lyricist in Rush after 2112....However, in this song, the emotional loud fury of the music is all Alex with Geddy the glue welding the lyrics, tone, and melody together to evoke the subject of the song.
@@johnkeller9738 beautifully said
This is up there with my favourite Rush songs. The lyrics still gives me chills.
The lyrics are very personal to them. Geddy's parents were Polish holocaust survivors who met at Auschwitz. They were separated and moved to different camps, but promised to find each other again, and indeed did after the war. Geddy related the story to Neil, who wrote the lyrics.
I only saw Rush 2times back in the day at the Texas jam in 84 with Ozzy and test for Echo tour Rip Neil we Love you
R.I.P. NEIL RUSH FOR EVER \m/ Rush is soundtrack of my life
I'm an old man, and I had family in World War II,
If this doesn't give you the feels, I don't know if I have enough prayers 2 throw up
I've never been so impressed towards a lead singer's voice from recording to live performance, it's just so good.
Have you ever heard of Dio Queensryche ...
Alexie30 irrelevant
noobyliw how is that irrelevant I don't think you know how to use that word . Geoff tate and Dio are both extremely good live making them relevant to what you said about geddy you pompous fuck
Dplm I have to agree, they were more precise and geddy could still hit all the notes back in the 80s. Still love them.
Dio be dead
Geddy Lee. The guy that can sing, play bass, and keyboards all at the same time! 😳
So true
I read in an old rock magazine that he can actually juggle tennis balls at the same time as well. But he only does that in practices. He never wanted to bring it on stage. Thought he would look like a show off.
You forgot guitar(double neck...2112 and Farewell), PLUS bass pedals AND synthesizers !
Alex as well!
True talent, born for it
And manipulate the microphone with his shnoz!
What's so scary is that they make this look EASY!
Unbelievable talent
I miss these guys a lot.
Sometimes I really wish I was either 10 years older or a time traveller back to 1984 to have gone to this concert.. Adore them
I was so fortunate to see Rush for both the Signals and Grace Under Pressure tours -
One of the best memories of my adolescence
Eye really Love America's C.I.A.
From Dearborn, Michigan I am
Neal " P.J." Fry a.k.a.
HIGH PRIEST.
That drummer is doing such a great job.
The best job, ever.
June 16, 1984
Kansas City, Missouri
Kemper Arena
I was there!
Rush R40 was Geddy's mullet even more amazing in person?
If you're referring to the video. It was filmed in Toronto
Me too it was AWESOME! Are you saying this video was shot at Kemper? Very cool
steve lee This concert was shot in Toronto.
@@medmac2112 ok thanks!
Neil was the best drummer in the world
Even so he still had a coach who was trying to make him better
What dedication
And all his loses through his career
He is another Canadian hero
Love you neil
Even if he is 11, it doesn’t make him less of a fan than anyone else
Francis Rossi on Lead Guitar and vocals, he plays with soul
Rick Parfitt is the best and greatest Rhythm Guitarist in history and a great singer.
From psychedelic Rock in the 60's to Stoner Hard Rock of '70 & '71
to Hard Rockin' Boogie all thru the 70's and into the highs and lows of the 80's and 90's then to hit back with some of the greatest Rock albums ever made in the Noughties and 2010's. Superlatives cannot describe how great STATUS QUO are.
Honest, genuine, sincere tight punchy raw Rock n Roll that's STATUS QUO!!!!
The Sex Pistols liked STATUS QUO because of their attitude to the music industry and the world in general.
The QUO basically said ' if you don't like what we're doing then you can get fuck#d!!!!!!'
Being technical and intricate doesn't make you a great Guitarist or Drummer.
A role model. Be your own hero.
Alan Strom, I would have to disagree. I think there's enough room in the Rock universe for this amazing band
@@alanstrom2221 these bands you named can’t hold a candle to Rush
How can you put such beautiful music and beats to such heart breaking lyrics? Only Neil Peart and Rush can!
This is Rush in their prime! Alex is on fire,Neil stroken on the skins and Geddy showing off his chops on the keyboards. Damn!
This is one of my favorites of the best band ever
+Mario the Plumber My favourite album of Rush. Best band ever, yes!
Very underrated album. It's in my top 5 rush albums.
Same, a gem amongst gems
On July 2nd 2021, Geddy's mother, Mary Weinrib has passed away to who this song was dedicated to along with her husband. Rest easy, and thank you for giving us Geddy miss!
All that they can do is just survive, all that they can do to help themselves is stay alive...
This group, saw ahead into the Future, Mr PEART, Was A Man,Ahead of His Time !!! Huge,Influence,Musicly For The World At Large !!!
Geddy sure was singing well during that period. Wow.
This was when they peaked in my experience as a follower.
Hey kiddies, open spot for the greatest Drummer alive!
For RUSH fans...we are pleased to have the Best ROCK Drummer, the Best ROCK Bass, but we LOVE Alex Lifeson as he was the BEST ROCK Guitar of the WORLD.
Always loved the instrumentation of this song.. When i got older i started listening to their lyrics and Wow such an emotional song 🎶
Definitely. "Six million people murdered" is one kind of horror... But this is the story of one small family seeing that horror from the inside 😮
Individually superb, collectively brilliant. What a band. Never to be repeated.
All that we can do is just survive
All that we can do to help ourselves
Is stay alive…
Ragged lines of ragged grey
Skeletons, they shuffle away
Shouting guards and smoking guns
Will cut down the unlucky ones
I clutch the wire fence
Until my fingers bleed
A wound that will not heal -
A heart that cannot feel -
Hoping that the horror will recede
Hoping that tomorrow -
We’ll all be freed
Sickness to insanity
Prayer to profanity
Days and weeks and months go by
Don’t feel the hunger - too weak to cry
I hear the sound of gunfire
At the prison gate
Are the liberators here -
Ao I hope or do I fear?
For my father and my brother, it’s too late
But I must help my mother
Stand up straight…
Are we the last ones left alive?
Are we the only human beings
To survive?…
One of the most powerful songs out there. As a huge Rush fan, this is my favorite song from my favorite album ! Miss you Neil 😢
After seeing evil up close. They were asking: Are we the only good people left in this world?
Don't let it happen again.
It's happening right now, sadly
I was at the show I think I was 13 boy did my life change after this show three absolute wizards in their craft
Neil is killer in this...love his playing in this one!!..
His lyrics were great too! This is easily one of Neil's best tracks!
Me also.
Wish I could have seen them live. Amazing musicians. Geddy s voice is just perfect
Rest In Peace Professor Peart❤️
Alex Lifeson is ALWAYS on point. Always.
This has to be on of the most poignant songs ever written or performed. How Getty gets through without breaking down, I do not know. I listen to and I cry like a baby.
While driving Uber and LA I picked up four people and I had rush playing on my stereo. The album Hold Your Fire and they all were like that's our band they were all from Canada and one of them asked me what was my favorite Rush song. That's a tough one to answer there's so many of them even if I haven't heard them for years I can still sing them by heart that's how much they touch your soul I love mission from the album Hold Your Fire too many albums are my favorites from a farewell to Kings and of course 2112, signals, Grace Under Pressure. Hemispheres
In this song Rush flirts with new wave and progressive. The weight of the guitar practically nonexistent and yet it is a masterpiece
It never ceases to amaze me that it only took 3 musicians to make this music.
"I hear the sound of gunfire at the prison gates are the liberators here, do I hope or do I fear" Epic
Thanks to Neal Peart.....and to Geddy for allowing his heritage to become the basis for this song.
Geddy goes into incredible detail in his autobiography about his parents experience. My great uncle liberated a camp as part of a US division and it just makes you sick to know what all happened.
The power of the human spirit astonishes....
"Are we the last ones left alive ?? ,...are we the ONLY human beings ,... to survive "
really strong vocal performance by Geddy. He sounds flawless.
I am from Brazil. With this song, it was in 1984 that I discovered that Rush was a trio. It was jaw-dropping, LOLLOLLOL...
One of the most amazing songs of all time, raw emotion, raw energy. Rush will always be one of my favorite bands of all time.
This piece of information was published recently ... "Camp/Sector Level: a group of shelters such as schools, community buildings within a camp/sector (max 50 high-risk individuals per single green zone) where high-risk individuals are physically isolated together"
I've seen Rush 19 times throughout the 80's, 90's and 2000's! One of the greatest bands of all-time!
I'm jealous, I really wish I could've seen them in the 80s. Or the 70s, for that matter. I saw them in '96 and '08.
What a story! What a message! What a heartbreak! 😢
So proud to be Canadian. Thanks Guys
How's it goin, ehh ? 🇨🇦
Only in the 80s could you get away with wearing a white jacket. But Alex pulls it off ... Lerxst at his finest.
Thank you RUSH for everything
Musicians at their finest 👍
Probabley one of the better live performances out there, if you compare this to the studio version Rush really nailed it .
sounds like Ann Frank at the end
Studio version was poorly produced, with a weak distant drum sound that made Neils drums sound dead. Etched vocals and guitars make the mix almost unlistenable on a high end system. No punch or dynamics
Production sound was much better on power windows but Grace had better material ironically
Fortunately snakes and arrows live captured a few songs from grace, which sound much better than the studio
Every single live performance I've seen of Rush has been phenomenal so I'm not quite sure how you say it's one of the best because they're all so damn good
This entire concert is awesome
rush are great, just like queens in terms of stage performance.
Neil is at the height of his powers as a drummer here. My god he's incredible. Unparalleled as a drummer for about 15 years I reckon. Sure, there are some who could surpass him now but back then he was KING.
Saw them during the Grace Under Pressure Tour in Honolulu, 1984. Great show.
