There was another one I remember reading about in Sports Illustrated in their post-draft analysis in 1974. When the Steelers picked John Stallworth in the 4th round, the Chargers had picked Harrison Davis with the pick right before that. Now, there weren’t a lot of WRs picked that year and Stallworth went to Alabama A&M, so he didn’t get any attention. In fact, his coaches sent a highlight reel (back then, thee were no CDs, DVDs, flash drives or even digital uploads) out that was suppose to be passed around to several teams. The Steelers were the the first to receive the film and proceeded to “lose” the film after reviewing it. They later admitted that Stallworth was their back up choice in case Lynn Swann was taken before their turn on the first round. However, they were able to draft Swann, filled another hole at MLB in the second round with Jack Lambert, didn’t draft in the third round as they had traded that to the Raiders (who picked Mark Van Eghen) and figured correctly that Stallworth would be available still in the fourth round.
Fun fact: those Roger Staubach highlights of him at a scrimmage against the Rams were filmed at Cal Lutheran University where the Cowboys had their summer training camp until 1989, and where the Rams have had their team headquarters since moving back to LA.
The one skill that most draft pickers fail on is the end of the nose test. That’s the skill that identifies a player a thousand miles away when the best person is right down the road. IE Chicago Bears who should have seen Joe Montana in South Bend about 120 miles away, yet picked Willie McClendon from GA about 1100 miles away.
Joe Montana might not have been a great one if he went anywhere else. Bill Walsh picked him specifically because he thought Montana would be a natural fit for his new West Coast offense. Would he have been the same guy if he were taken by the 80's Bucs or Lions?
More than that. Dwight Clark wasn't even considered a draft prospect. He hadn't even entered the draft. He was Fuller's roommate and he ran routes for Fuller when Walsh came to evaluate Fuller. Walsh didn't want Fuller but he wanted the Clark and told Clark to enter the draft. Walsh had this idea rolling around in his head for a long time. a hybrid type receiver. A guy between a wide receiver and a tightend. A guy who was too big for corners to cover buy too fast for linebackers. He knew he had found exactly what he had been looking for when he scouted Fuller and by chance discovering Clark.
The Dolphins situation in '83 is an interesting one. They missed out on HOFer Darrell Green who was chosen right after Marino.Imagine Green along with that Killer B's defense in the early to mid 80's. The Dolphins made it to the '82 S.B. with Woodley and Strock at QB, and the '83 Defense with Green added in would have been a sure winner-not to mention the following years.
Yes, Marino did play good enough to help the Dolphins win 1 Conf. Championship, but only 1 in 10 playoff years. Green helped his team win 5 total championships, 3 Conf. and 2 S.B.'s.
For some reason everyone always misses one of the biggest examples of this: with the 3rd overall pick in the 1967 NFL draft the 49ers took Steve Spurrier, who became a legendary coach but as a QB basically spent his whole career as a benchwarmer. 1 pick later the Dolphins took Bob Griese

It’s kinda hard to draft a true star cause there are so many variables. They can be injury-prone, his measurables may be lacking in the top level, or his confidence is shaky at best. It’s hard to blame the teams cause hindsight is always 20/20 and we have to wait the season to evaluate whether their pick was good or not. Once it has been evaluated, we throw all our shit on the teams cause they made a bad pick which they don’t even know on draft night so it’s not really fair. Like if you were a Head Coach for a struggling team that needs to reach the playoffs or you’re gone, would you draft a low pedigree WR from Mississippi (who would be Jerry Rice) or a Heisman candidate with a known bad attitude (like Jeff George)? Oh and you have no data on Jerry Rice’s performances at Mississippi Valley. You have no clue who both would become so of course you’re gonna pick the Heisman candidate cause its the safest choice right? Instead of the low pedigree school in which you have never sent a scout to and have no data on what anyone did there.

As a chicago sports fan im aware over 50% of our downfalls land at the feet of our gm's. Either we have a gm that builds a dynasty and then is fired to have the next gm reap all the benefits and then slowly fuck it all up (hawks). Or a gm who builds a dynasty but allows his ego to explode and then fucks it all up (bulls). The cubs have been an ongoing joke except maybe a year or two out of each of the last eleven decades except recently they were pretty damn good for a 3ish year period, but then started making dumb signings ...and then we have the bears gms.. Trubisky... Skipping over two future h.o.f'rs at the qb position and another one or two possible ones who play at other positions. Most people get excited around draft time, where in Chicago you just hold your breath and wait to find out what people will be making fun of you about that year. Of course that is if you have draft picks to use that year which isn't always a bad thing to not have a any of.
Can you say Peterson was a miss, Peterson was a true lock down corner playing man and zone or whatever where Sherman kinda never played out of a cover 3 scheme and when he was in man having earl Thomas roaming in center field would hide the times a wr with speed run past him on one on one situations
In the Future Russel Wilson should be on this list when he becomes a hall of famer. Remember when the Jacksoville Jaguars passed him for a punter?? Lmao!!😂😂😂😂

3:12 I see why they called him "Roger the Dodger"
OUCH ON GARY WOOD!!!!
But it got us the "light reading" gag from "Airplane!"
49ers coach Bill Walsh once wondered aloud during an interview as to why Notre Dame didn't start Joe Montana more often than they did.....
I loved the joe Montana one
Coaching and environment matters though. And sometimes you get unlucky with injuries.
Also a ton of these picks are mid-to-late round reaches who happened to be late-bloomers
Lions and Jets fans are happy they didn't end up here
but Sherman didn't intercept that crabtree ball he just tipped it
Can you say Peterson was a miss, Peterson was a true lock down corner playing man and zone or whatever where Sherman kinda never played out of a cover 3 scheme and when he was in man having earl Thomas roaming in center field would hide the times a wr with speed run past him on one on one situations
Good video, although at this point I hear Brady being more widely accepted as the goat over Montana 😉
Another quality video. Keep up the good work man :)
In the Future Russel Wilson should be on this list when he becomes a hall of famer. Remember when the Jacksoville Jaguars passed him for a punter?? Lmao!!😂😂😂😂
Any video with a clip from "Airplane!" is an automatic thumbs up. Good work, Fivepoints!!
Lol that pic of Chad Pennington 😄
I was sure this would be a video mainly about JaMarcus Russell. I was pleasantly surprised, and then a little confused. So I went to look up who the next QB drafted after JR was in 2007. Yeah, not exactly a Hall of Fame player either.
jake butt literally can’t stay healthy imagine how different it would’ve been if we got kittle
Me as a scout: "he went to Notre Dame I'd pick him
Andre Reed may not have a rapper named after him, but he does have Kutztown's Football Stadium named after him. I was going there when it was officially changed. That was pretty cool!
I love the collaboration 🔥🔥🔥
You could do a list of these of solely Lions picks.
Going the other way, who you passed up...The New York Jets! Passed on drafting essentially the entire Hall of Fame so they could get Richard Todd
In 2014, Kutztown Univeristy renamed their football field to honor Andre Reed, which is now called University Field at Andre Reed Stadium or Andre Reed Stadium.
And as a Minnesotan, i can't help but notice 2 of these were Vikings picking the wrong guy...
As a fellow vikings fan. Pain
i swear man i learn something every new video, love it
Jake Butt is exactly why players should opt out of meaningless bowl games.
Another terrific vid man!
This is creative content . Good video homeboy
As a bears fan, i thank deshaun watson for saving us from this list
THE ONLY REASON PATRICK PETERSON HAS MORE PRO-BOWLS THAN SHERMAN... Peterson was an alternate while Sherman played in Superbowls..
Kutztown is pronounced like soots-town.
What are youbtalking about? Steve Fuller dropped straight bars on his part of the Super Bowl Shuffle. Which is still the best song ever released by a sports team.
Merry Christmas from THE Butts!
