Here are every #2 pick 1997 to 2017, as the ones more recent (Barkley, Bosa, Young) need some more time.
2017: Mitchell Trubisky, QB, North Carolina, Chicago
2016: Carson Wentz, QB, North Dakota state, Philly
2015: Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon, Tennessee (3 QBs, 3 disappointing or straight busts in a row)
2014: Greg Robinson, OT, Auburn, Rams (The lineman who went to the browns and then got caught in Texas with 150 pounds of weed in 2020? yeah, that guy.)
2013: Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M, Jacksonville (was injured a couple times, was considered one of the worst OTs in the NFL at one point, last played in 2017)
2012: RG3, QB, Baylor, Washington (this is just sad)
2011: Von Miller, LB, Texas A&M, Denver (Finally, not a disappointment! still with team as of writing)
2010: Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska, Lions (always a solid player, but a dirty player the few of his career, but turned it around as of the last few. was part of the SB winning bucs team last year)
2009: Jason Smith, OT, Baylor, Rams (back to busts, was hit with a serious concussion in his rookie year and missed the rest of his rookie season. was out by 2013)
2008: Chris Long, DE, Virginia, Rams (Never made a pro bowl, but played til 2018, and was part of 2 super bowl teams. Won man of the year in 2018. So solid player for a decade.)
2007: Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech, Detroit (HoFer, retired in 2015.)
2006: Reggie Bush, RB, USC, Saints (covered well in video)
2005: Ronnie Brown, RB, Auburn, Miami (played for 11 seasons, made pro bowl in 2008, broke 1k yards rushing once in 2006, 5400 yards in career.)
2004: Robert Gallery, OG, Iowa, Oakland (unremarkable for 7 seasons. was done by 2012. only one of the 1st 8 drafted in this draft to not make a pro bowl, was picked between Eli Manning and Larry Fitzgerald.)
2003: Charles Rodgers, WR, Michigan State, Detroit (big old bust. broke his clavicle twice in first 2 seasons, had drug problems, gone from league in 3 seasons and had legal problems afterwards. past away in late 2019 due to liver failure)
2002: Julius Peppers, DE, North Carolina, Carolina (yay! another not bust. 9 time pro bowler, retired in 2018, Made both 2000 and 2010 all decade teams. will make HoF someday)
2001: Leonard Davis, OL, Texas, Arizona (played for 12 seasons, made pro bowl 3 straight years with Dallas, but was unremarkable minus those 3 years, and became a backup later in his career)
2000: LaVar Arrington, LB, Penn State, Washington (made pro bowl 3 stright times in 01-03, but had injuries in the years after and butting heads with coaches. was gone from league after 2006)
1999: Donovan McNabb, QB, Syracuse, Philly (out of the 3 qbs picked to start this draft, the one that did the best by far. 6 times pro bowler, number retired by eagles, retired in 2011. Solid player.)

He was already partially injured, limiting his play, and Shanahan started him anyway, leading to the injury mentioned in this video. I couldn't understand at the time why they wouldn't start the backup since they were both rookies anyway, I mean why draft 2 QBs in the same draft if you're just not going to use one. You’re correct and I would like to add the field had been rained on that week and been used for local high school championships and was in extremely poor condition. When it happened it was a combination of already being injured and his cleat sticking leading to the horrific leg snap.

It wasn't a "freak" injury, it was an MCL sprain, followed by an ACL(/MCL) tear.. Nothing you cannot come back from, especially with today's medicine, as a top tier professional athlete.
However, the style of play that made him successful was dependent on a certain level of athleticism he didn't trust to have after coming back from the injury. Besides that he (advised as such by fill in the blank) decided this part of his game was in his best interest to be abandoned anyway and he wanted to be a classic dropback passer instead, although his mental football development was nowhere near ready to take on such a role.. Did RG deserve a lot better? I would say absolutely so! Loved the guy from the first time I heard him speak.. Nonetheless he was himself actually a big part of the failure of his career in many ways. Although I will say that more than Robert himself it was probably Dan Snyder and his handling of him that led to most of these issues...

He's apologized to the reporter he screamed at several different times now. I get Ryan is the biggest bust ever statistically but, I think we can let the man off the hook. He knows he was a bust and he probably has nightmares every day from it. We forgave Mike Vick. We should be able to leave Ryan Leaf alone now.

With pick #1 always being a qb nowadays, the #2 like Bosa or Young basically have the confidence of being a stalwart player without the what could have been part since teams will always burn that pick on a qb (although it might affect other qbs taken at 2)
