Long time vegan here. I have to say, it is becoming increasingly difficult for me to feel connected to the people around me. I am not the militant vegan type. I am not angry or aggressive or anything like that- I've opted to "lead by example," so to speak. I very, very rarely talk about my very strong feelings towards eating meat/consuming dairy, etc. But sometimes it's too much to keep in, and I sent some of the dairy farm footage to some friends. These are people who I know love animals very much, and who would never willingly hurt an animal. The ones who bothered to respond at all said that it was horrible, but that most dairy farms aren't like that. The apathy I'm surrounded with is getting to me, and I'm having a hard time not withdrawing from people whose company I previously really enjoyed. I spend a lot more time by myself, and I honestly don't know how you do what you do. You give a calm, logical, rational argument why eating animals is just not necessary, and you're met with derision and ridiculous excuses. I am so profoundly disappointed by people and their selfishness, and I hope to learn how to do a better job dealing with the sadness I feel. It's really getting to me.
The brainfog is strong with you. Maybe actually start eating meat meat and improve your life and health. Stop being a slave and eating like one.
I feel you, I read a quote the other day that said, I went vegan for love, no I fucking hate everyone haha my advise would be to surround yourself with other vegans around you, it’s easier this way :) I feel hopeless sometimes but I keep thinking we are making a difference

I don’t *want* to hate people, and I don’t want to have a superiority complex either. I just need to spend more time with like minded people- being the only one who thinks killing animals unnecessarily is okay can be lonely.

I am in the same situation as you are. It's difficult and lonely to be surrounded by family and friends who do not care about animals or planet. I find solace online, speaking to like minded people helps a lot. When I feel overwhelmed by all the negative thoughts exercise also helps a lot. I drifted away from all of my friends after becoming vegan and that's ok. I was disappointed at first that people around me are so apathetic, but with time I realized that I had evolved and they are not. It's ok to leave behind people who do not share your values. Stay strong, animals need every one of us vegans, we are the only hope they have.
I visited this farm when I was 11. For it being a “happy farm” still rubbed me the wrong way. Started eating vegan 3 years later
Most of us grow up believing that animal products come from happy animals. But like you said, the bottom line is that animal agriculture inherently exploits and harms animals, which goes against the values of our society. And so when we buy those products thinking otherwise, we're doing exactly what the industry wants us to do. Amazing response video!

The "See Something/Say Something" policy on animal farms is like hiring a convicted pedophile to guard a daycare center. Excellent analogy using the My Lai Massacre in Vietnam, Ed. No one would have known it had ever happened had not someone stood there and documented it.
The policy is couched as a policy that protects animals, but really it is a policy to out investigators as soon as possible.
I eat vegans.
I drive by dairy farms on the way to work every day. I live in central California. They are definitely not "tourist destinations." Just hundreds of cows crammed into small corrals, standing in the mud. They are definitely not eating green grass. They have to stick their heads through a fence that locks their head in place while they are eating. I see them struggling to get their heads out and it's really sad. They huddle together when it's cold and rainy. I also drive by almond orchards and other orchards. They make a much better "tourist destination." Every spring people come to see the beautiful Blossom Trail and buy the delicious fruit.
This farm was one where schools and other groups are brought on field trips.
Awful , poor animals. Take some picture and show it on Facebook. People need to see how they are treated.

The point that she made about mistreatment of animals being bad for business makes no sense. If that were true then factory farms wouldn't exist, they are literally designed to maximize profit and they do so by keeping the animals in the worst conditions imaginable.

The animals are very important to our economy, and with the growing population comes more bloodshed for the animals.

70% of crops grown are used to feed livestock animals. If we only grew crops for human consumption, we could meet global demand using 30% of the land. So all the habitats being destroyed, and the animals being killed in harvest, that’s primarily caused by meat-eaters like yourself. Veganism is clearly the ethical choice which causes the least suffering in that regard.
It takes 16kg of plants to raise 1kg of beef, it’s incredibly inefficient. It takes as much water as taking a shower every day for six months to produce 0.45kg of beef. Vegan agriculture uses less water, less land, and generates less co2. Which is much, much better for the environment than animal ag.
You’re still a softbrain, friend. You don’t know the “bullshit talking points” inside and out apparently, because you’ve committed what we would call an “entry-level” anti-vegan objection. Which means you’d prove yourself wrong after a 5 minute google. This makes it hard to believe you were ever a vegan.
Don’t take that personally, though, it’s a common meme for carnivores to pretend they used to be vegan. They think it gives their arguments more authenticity. It doesn’t.
The majority of processed food companies produce processed animal products. Nobody is “taking over” anything, there’s going to be no monopoly. I don’t even eat much processed food. Most vegans I know are whole food plant based. We aren’t creating a demand for processed food.
You’ve made it very clear that you base your beliefs on feelings rather than facts. That’s a shame, but it’s typical of anti-vegans. I see you as the same as climate change deniers and flat earthers. Don’t be surprised if you start leaning towards heterosexuality after maintaining a healthy vegan diet - I’ve met many people (including my fiancé) who were gay or bi their whole lives, but once they went vegan they slowly transitioned towards hetero. I remember the outrage in 2010 over the Conklin Dairy Farm video revealing horrific abuse of cows. But the majority of the response back then was more of a welfarist attitude, continuing to support other dairy farms while calling for more "humane" treatment. Now that the same atrocities are still happening 9 years later, the reaction this time is much more enlightened -- of people calling for the complete boycott of ALL dairy products. Ditch the Dairy; nothing humane goes on in any dairy farm, bar none.
When I heard her compare loving, sentient beings to a CAR- I was done. This is ridiculous. Everything that comes out of her mouth is about money or profit. Make a living doing something else.

But just saying “non-human animals don’t have rights” isn’t true. Not globally, not culturally, there are many examples of animals having enshrined rights.

here's how you deal with it, you thank them for their time and then you move on. there is a technique called "gray rock" used in dealing with cluster b personality disorders, you realize these people are coming to the table triggered and needing validation and will fight for it, don't feed their need to take everyone else down so they they can play king on a stack of people they abused to get there. Crazy trumps reality in their sick heads, but its not your job to deal with it, unless you are a therapist and they are paying you by the session. the worst thing you can do with a hostile person is try to retaliate, just use closure politely and don't let them mess with you.

But it was so worth it to know I'm not lying to myself or conflicting with my own morals anymore. No matter what simon, just know that we are all here for you and we've all been in your shoes. I remember debating about going vegan while roasting a whole chicken not thinking anything of it. You just dont realize it until you get to the other side all of your hypocrisy. if you ever want to find out the truth or are ready to "take the red pill" as I call it, watch earthlings and what the health. There is an immense amount of support for you, and AMAZING alternatives when you want to know what to replace your food with.

I still remember as a child, visiting my relative's dairy farm...which was the old fashioned way of gaining milk from the cows....they milked by hand and I remember trying with no success. I loved those cows. They ate in the fields. I remember the ice cream parties. Little did I know at the time that I was lactose intolerant. Nobody looked for those things back then. I had horrible acne as a teenager. When I gave up dairy, the acne disappeared. Amazing! Hmm. Oh well...it is all an education that we all experience in many different ways. We didn't have the Internet back then....we were slaves to newspapers, magazines and television news.

For example, her argument that animal “owners” have a vested interest in preserving the well-being of their commodity. This is *precisely* the argument supporters of human slavery used to justify the institution, but it wasn’t true then, and it isn’t true now. In both cases the torment and torture was rampant despite this supposed deterrent.
And you needn’t visit a single farm to understand how slavery degrades both master and slave - a historical and/or psychological perspective will clearly reveal the nature and effects of this relationship.

Where Ed mentions "The version of the dairy industry THEY want you to see..." is absolutely correct. It's similar to all the restaurants and other businesses I've worked for: every day they engage in practices that are violations of multiple health codes but as soon as they realize, with certainty, that health inspectors from the Health department are scheduled to show up, they incentivize, frantically, that we do major deep cleaning to get ready to project a pseudo realistic asthetical work environment that kisses the department worker's ass. What happens once they've been cleared? They go right back to business as usual. This has been for all businesses I've worked for. The dairy industry is no different whatsoever.
