    Since recording this video, we have launched into phase two of #dismantledairy, with our new investigation breaking in The Independent. Please share the article and investigation as much as you possibly can. Cows were found to be violently kicked, punched and sexually abused at a dairy farm owned by the Deputy President of the National Farmers' Union, Guy Smith. Workers at the Essex farm, owned by a company of which Guy Smith is director, are seen in the video kicking, punching and hitting dairy cows with sticks. Some of the most disturbing footage shows one worker touching two cows in intimate areas on two different occasions. The worker appears to be moving his hand up and down in a way that would suggest masturbation. The footage was so horrific that The Independent couldn't show all of it, but you can see the full investigation on our website below.

Maybe a little bigger of a production to show how a waste of water and food production form the cattle industry. not to mention the cruelty, try to make some better videos.

      @@bellywood7688 The problem I don't see Ed address is that the vegan lifestyle is also responsible for the deaths of millions of animals as well (not to mention that there is scientific evidence of even plants being able to feel, just because they are plants do not mean they aren't alive, and ironically , a lot of vegans mock the idea of plants being abused.)
      in other words, Ed is only addressing part of the issue, the whole food industry needs to be transformed; and we need to be realistic, unless we learn how to absorb light energy from the sun, we are unable to live without the consumption of another life form to survive. the idea is to cause as minimum harm to other life forms as possible.

    • @deciding2slide
      @deciding2slide 4 года назад +44

      @@spicymang0o you need a central nervous system to feel pain, which plants don't. Force a dog into a fire and listen to it cry in pain. Do the same with a carrot and see what happens. And yes, many small animals are killed in the cultivation of crops, but we breed and kill 60 billion animals each year who are fed on the large majority of these crops. If we stop breeding these animals and only grow what we need for human consumption (and that of the animals in our care), most of these small creatures will live.

      Thumper I think that the point Ed makes is that the universal practices (meaning on every dairy farm in the world) of dairy farming are abhorrent. The calf MUST be taken away from the mom at a very early age so that the farmers can get the milk. ALL dairy cows are sent to slaughter for their flesh. ALL dairy farms forcibly impregnate their cows.

    I am in my 60s and I am converting to veganism for the sake of the environment and so for my children's and grandchildren's future. To be honest I don't feel like I am missing out on anything. Vegan food is delicious, healthy and way cheaper. Win, win win. All of this is noteworthy as I live in a dairying region in Australia. As an aside, the dairying industry in Queensland in Northern Australia is being decimated by our long and severe drought which has been linked to climate change. Ironic don't you think! You do realise most of your food has to be transported right? So good for the environment. And don’t forget about the millions of animals killed in agriculture for your fruit and veg. Also check the ingredients on fake meat and dairy replacements, absolutely toxic. If you want a sustainable future eat local grass fed meat to ensure a natural cycle alongside proper nutrition.

    • @jofoodie239
      @jofoodie239 4 года назад +9

      Issy You do realise don't you that the earth's climate is getting dangerously close to a tipping point after which we will all be seriously affected by runaway climate change. I don't want to be too alarmists here but climate change is our generation's WW3. Seriously we will all have to work together to solve this existential threat. Meat and dairy production is a significant contributor to climate change and changing our diet is one way that every one of us can contribute. We are talking about far greater issues here than "toxic meat substitutes" or any of the other arguments that you present. I do understand that this is a confronting issue and will challenge long held assumptions. We must adapt as we have adapted to other challenges in our history. By the way a whole foods, plant based diet is one of the healthiest diet on the planet.

    I can confirm that the excuse “they’re big animals, they don’t even feel it” in regard to whipping or hitting is a sad, weak attempt to relieve guilty conscious. Why? Because I used to ride horses and compete in rodeos and I used to say this, so did everyone else; parents of kids competing, other competitors, horse trainers, you name it. I’m no longer part of that toxicity I grew up in. When you know better, you do better. Anyone can live vegan!!!
    I want to add something else to this. When you see workers hitting and yelling at animals, keep in mind that people aren’t born wanting to do this. People do this when they’re being abused by humans and feel powerless. They are capable of stopping and becoming vegan. They are victims in the system in their own way. I used to be yelled at and bullied for “letting him have his way” if I wasn’t hitting/whipping my horse. There’s no excuse for what the workers do and for what I did growing up, but I just want to bring this perspective because industries that are cruel to animals are cruel to people as well.

Because horses don’t willingly ask to be ridden, definitely not when they’re young and untrained, they wanna be left alone. They call it “breaking a horse” for a reason. It’s basically breaking their spirit so that they’re obedient. And it’s an egotistical sport.

    Every time I've been suffering in my life; physically, or mentally, I've known that it'll be only temporary. And that kind of makes you go through it with hope, that you'll be better one day. But, it never ends for the animals, does it? They spend an entire life in suffering, and don't even know what it means to be free; by will, from pain, or mental trauma. When stories of imprisoned people come up, the entire human world comes up with it's hands in protest at the horror. But, when it comes to animals, the justifications keep coming, all according to personal conveniences.

      I mostly agree with you, although for many types of human suffering, it isn't temporary. My mother didn't believe me when I said something was wrong with me and I needed a doctor, and for years I just got worse because people under 18 can't consent to medical care. I ended up almost dying because it turned out I had Crohn's disease and it had progressed to a dangerous degree due to being untreated for a decade. One of the worst things about it was that child protective services were investigating my mom but they ultimately did nothing. I guess for me it was temporary but it I only just barely escaped it becoming permanent. Child rights are something that sorely needs attention.
      Meanwhile in regards to other things that aren't temporary, sadly police brutality is still an issue and that isn't age dependent either. As well as anti-trans violence and other human rights issues.
      Tldr: I very much agree that for animals, their abuse isn't temporary, but sadly many human rights issues also aren't temporary. I personally think it's important to fight for multiple causes for this reason.

    It's to be expected that dairy farmers would deny any of these LEGAL things go on in their farms. They all "love" their animals up until it's time to push and prod them onto the truck that takes them to their "respectful and lovingly humane" slaughter.

    • @Bloxeh
      @Bloxeh 4 года назад +8

      Yeah, doesn't make sense. The fundamental idea of the dairy industry is to keep breeding cows, so they can take the dairy. Logically this means there are a lot of calves born, approx 5 calves per dairy cow. If you say 50% are male, that's still 2,5 cows offspring, who will be exploited to have another 5 cows and so on. What do people think? Dairy farmers more than double the herd yearly? Just this alone tells you that they are killing cows left, right and center.

The animals suffer and those who are told to torture them are forced to do it or else they and their families are send back into a warzone...broken system. I think a Lot of people that are doing that Jobs get mentally broken by it too and should Change the way they earn money....and If they get pleasure from it they should definitly quit. It is AMAZING how the livestock industry lies to itself..... The livestock industry - which breed, fatten and slaughter ONE BILLION animals a year in the UK alone - is a ruthless, brutal, pitiless business. The fact that so many farmers don't recognise it as such just goes to show the Wilful Blindness within the livestock industry; and of course the public, who are very much party to this industry.
    For the omnivore HAS to believe, NEEDS to believe, that all is well down on the farm. That is the pact/conspiracy between livestock farmer and consumer.
    I was on a phone-in discussing the horrors of the dairy industry when a beef farmer also got on. She was denying anything bad ever happened. I said 'so none of your cattle are hung by their back leg and have their throats cut?' She ACTUALLY said: 'I don't approve of halal slaughter either'. I said 'No, ALL cattle have their throats cut'. She refused point blank to believe that, even though she claimed to actually be with her cattle when they went to the abattoir! THAT is how Wilfully Blind the industry is.

    The fact that these farmers are reacting and emotionally stirred is a positive sign that all the activism efforts are working. Every action is not in vain. 😊 Put-downs and insults lacking in logical, constructive rebuttals are indeed signs of vulnerability and insecurity. This is exactly when we have to keep pushing forward and not back down on our convictions and fighting for it. While losing a job can be a scary thing, that does not warrant torturing and exploiting other beings. What is more important - a human's job or the fundamental rights and freedom of countless innocent beings? I'd choose the latter in a split second.

    This weekend we're having our monthly "Vegmart" in Moscow. I'm going there tomorrow. We're going to get some falafels with my friend, and I'm buying the best vegan 'milk' chocolate (with almond and pine nut milk). It's gorgeous, tasty and healthy.

    Thank you so much for your testimony, Ed. I had seen many such videos before, but your recent video so clearly depicting all that is standard practice has moved me more forcibly against dairy. Both me and my teenage son are vegans and I’m working on my husband to go the same route. It’s surprising how anesthetized we’ve all been - really brainwashed - it’s troubling to say the least.

    The way that some of these people are behaving towards the campaign is insane to me. Unfortunately, I get to hear these things from my family all the time as both my parents grew up on dairy farms in Norway and my extended family continues to run them. Ever since I went vegan over 3 years ago, I've tried to get them to understand and empathize with their animals with no luck as they all think their practices are ethical. Its even more surprising since dairy consumption in Norway has decreased significantly and the majority of farmers rely on subsidies. As for my family, they run these farms as hobbies and have a main source of income elsewhere, making their actions even more inexcusable. I think that a lot of this has to do with familial relations and passing on traditions. As a child, I wanted to take over the family farm and I saw that as an honor, however growing up in a modernized world with social media to interact with people and gain information on the effects of these practices has completely changed my mind.
    I guess the point of this comment is to thank you for being a part of enlightening me on this subject and pulling me away from the destructive actions of my family that I could have easily and readily followed.

      You are an incredible and rare person. To have your own mind and strength of self belief not to just follow your family which would be the easy choice, the choice all farmers make, take the trade handed down to them rather than finding a trade of their own. So much respect for you.

      Clark Smith
      You realize that most grazing land isn’t particularly fertile soil. Generally, crop production is more efficient than livestock farming on a yield per acre basis. So if a rancher has a ton of land for cattle, it’s likely because he’s not able to grow much in that area. The crops/livestock a farmer produces is determined more by soil quality, weather conditions, and available technology than by a personal choice. That’s why you see more livestock where you’ve got a shorter growing season (Wisconsin/Minnesota) or where there isn’t much rain (the Southwest) and more crop production in the Southeast and Plains.

    As ever, so reasoned and rationale, Ed. As an academic trained in scientific reasoning, I find that you are the simply ‘the best’. You have my continued support. I am currently on a speaking gig in Sweden - the land of processed meats, meat, dairy and eggs, and fish and pickled fish. It’s been hard as I see suffering and dead animals all around me. Little overt awareness despite high cancer rates - no surprise there - two of four colleagues I met up with today have had or are being treated for cancer.. There is much work to be done here. But, having said that, there are many more vegan options than my visits pre-COVID. Carry on, Ed and Team. Your consistent, inquiring, reasoned, non confrontational style is your ‘ace’.
