I actually really do like the characterization of Doctor Octopus in this storyline. How he saves Peter for the challenge and inspiration he provides, how he gives the bar owner money for the damages, how he sends flowers to May while she is in the hospital, etc. This portrayal of Ock is classy and even noble... which I honestly dig.

For the record, the reason Doctor Octopus didn't believe that Peter was Spider-Man when he originally unmasked him all those years ago was because Pete was suffering a cold at the time and ended up getting his ass handed to him; Otto refused to believe that he'd be able to defeat his archenemy so easily and concluded that Peter had dressed as Spider-Man in a desperate attempt to save his then-girlfriend Betty Brant (whom Otto had taken hostage).

It makes it make sense that seeing what Peter's been through from his perspective would cause him to try to be a hero, since this shows that he already respected him and felt that they had a special relationship. 25:56 that is even funnier considering during Nick Spencer's Sinister War, it is Otto Octavious who ends up saving saving Peter from being pummeled by 30+ villains, by HE defeating almost all of them. And in the current Beyond Era (as of the writing of this comic), is heavily implied Aunt May would call Otto to help Peter, currently suffering from radiation poisoning.
So we might get to the point where Otto would keepg saving Peter, insisting in a tsundere-manner "I am saving you for the day I can triumph over you, my greatest rival.", especially if he goes back to being the superior spider-man

But honestly, it makes him all the more human for it.
Heck, most instances he was a scientist trying to do good at first and something and or someone pushes him to the break point, and he goes nuts. Then when his mental health comes back around her goes back to the old grind only for something or someone to happen that drives him back over the line, and he relapses.
I work in retail and sell cigarettes, and let me tell you, I see that same kind of mental ping pong happen a lot in smokers that want to quit, but have fallen to their smokes to cope with stress, and they relapse much the same way from time to time.
Combine that with the fact that a solid third of the time that it happens, he dies at the end of his noble streak (something that probably doesn't compound well with the mental stress of the multiple times he comes back to life) and I could really see why the rouge life would look more appealing on a reevaluation.

Much padding, not very fun… but the Doc Ock thing made me very happy, though, specially with the grim stuff going away. The idea of Peter's parents still loving and accepting him if he was a clone, Peter and Mary Jane expecting to become parents, Doc Ock saving Peter's life and not wanting to use his secret identity to his advantage, instead just wanting the fun game of Hero Vs Villain to keep going… it's all pretty nice, makes my heart warm and it's a good change of pace to Peter "MY LIFE IS PAIN ALL I KNOW IS SUFFERING EVERYTHING I TOUCH WITHERS AND DIES I AM A HARBINGER OF DEATH AND POSSIBLY A CLONE" Parker, and it shows. The Kaine thing at the end can go right to Hell though, Doc Ock should've kicked his ass into oblivion in my humble opinion. Cut off some of those issues with padding, dial down Kaine to a solid 1 from the 100 he's at, maybe do some more work on Stunner… and there ya go, would be a 10/10 from the 7/10 I'm keeping it at (the best bits heavily outweigh the bad ones, to me at least)

Honestly what I enjoy about this arc is ironically its place in the metastory of Doc Ock once we ignore his (eventually retconned) death - we can draw straight line from original appearances of Otto in Stan Lee's run, through here, to his modern revamp as an antihero in Superior Spider-Man. This kind of long-running character arc is something that honestly only comics can really provide.

You know, I always look forward to the Clone Saga reviews. It's just nice to have a very detailed annual retrospective about a singular series/event, breaking down why it failed. Not just in general, but on a case by case basis. Like here, where they introduce a really cool idea of how Doctor Octopus and Spider-Man relationship as enemies changes dramatically... and then they kill Ock off.
It's just sad seeing how a good story concept quickly starts to degrade as time goes on, whether through lame villains like Kaine and Judas Traveler, or convoluted nonsense that quickly makes everything really hard to follow. But it's fascinating to watch because the Clone Saga epitomizes the 90s state of comics, where sales meant more than good stories and how everything ended up getting centered around that conciet.
