When a member begins to display certain traits, they are somewhat severed from the hive mind.

Honestly I love the idea of Venom as an anti-hero it works with how Eddie Brock always wanted to report the facts and be a good guy before putting on the suit. So him deciding to try and help people is great development for a villain and if they had stuck to it with proper characterization and writing could have been a great long running series .
Much agreed, and furthermore I much preferred the era where Flash Thompson was Agent Venom and Eddie Brock was Anti-Venom, I feel it was a good switch up for both Eddie and the symbiote

Too bad I actually watched the saga's conclusion episode first. It was around the time when I first learned about Linkara from one of his collabs with Suede, and I didn't know at the time that Linkara does storylines.

Interesting thing, there was a video game using the whole "Thousands of symbiotes" thing to much greater effect. It is called SpiderMan: Web of Shadows. It was a pretty good game, although I only played the DS version. But yeah, the whole city gets taken over by symbiotes. It has some limited branching paths two, depending on if you decided to use the regular suit or a symbiote.
I don't know if someone has mentioned this, but here's a fun fact about Venom. I've done some checking, and it turns out that the original intent was that, instead of Eddie Brock, the Venom symbiote was supposed to go from Spidey to a woman who had a grudge of her own against the web-slinger. Her story was to be that an inattentive cabbie, who was watching Spider-Man in action instead of the road, accidentally hit and killed the woman's husband, who was trying to flag the cabbie down. She was also pregnant at the time, but lost the child. However, Marvel discarded this idea because they felt that their readers wouldn't find a woman to be a credible enough threat to our favorite wall-crawler (never mind the fact that a woman with the Venom symbiote would be, by definition, physically STRONGER than Spidey, just like scrawny Cletus Kassidy is with the Carnage symbiote). As a result, it came to be something of a self-fulfilling prophecy in that Spidey doesn't have many memorable female villains. In fact, the only one I can think of is Black Cat (who is technically a knock-off of Catwoman). There's an actual article detailing the original intent for Venom online, but I don't know if RUclips would let me post a link.
BTIsaac How? And BTW, they flat-out admitted that it was because they didn't think the readers would find a woman to be a physical enough threat to Spidey.
There's no need to get hostile about it. Let's not forget that in comic book land, characters tend to make decisions based on things that make sense only to them. The woman was also pregnant and going into labor at the time, but the child ended up being stillborn. According to the article, the experience of losing both her husband and her child caused her to go insane and be institutionalized in the Ravencroft Institute. She would've eventually regained her sanity, but still blamed Spidey for the death of her husband and child. Plus, let's not forget that Eddie Brock's motivations for hating Spidey weren't exactly either. He hated the wall-crawler because of events that resulted from his own stupidity, and he had a "Never My Fault" thing going on as well.
Scream was kinda okay....but I agree with Marvel's idea...the do have a point ( with you in it ) because a girl combined with a symbiote = not scary nor menacing...
BTIsaac I did mention that she went crazy, didn't I? All I'm saying is that while I acknowledge that it's flawed, it's not an entirely bad idea and could be salvaged if done right. Plus, you don't know for sure if them dismissing it as stupid is how it really went down.
The guy in the second part of the story wearing the green shirt and red baseball cap that Linkara described as "a grown-up 90s kid" actually looks more like Spoony.
When Flash Thompson went to the Symbiote's homeworld and found out they were Klyntars I thought about this comic mini-series. Klyntars were aliens who bonded with other beings to survive and took the personalities of their hosts. Most Klyntars are peace loving creatures, but the Venom Klyntar was corrupted by its genocidal "first" host (its original host was a Kree, but after separating, the Venom Klyntar's memories were erased) who used it to slaughter most of the inhabitants on the continent, no matter how many good hosts it had, the rage and evil from the first host was inbedded in the Venom Klyntar's personality. The Klyntars then "purged" the evil from the Venom Klyntar, resetting it to its default personality, and the heroic Flash Thompson was able to be a superhero with a perfectly docile and obedient symbiote at his command. And then the writers blew all that up, stuck the symbiote with a gangster, turning it evil again, and then gave it back to Eddie Brock.
Beneath the sea beside the flame Off the coast where the lost beast came To bring the world misery and shame A piece of the world is missing The path you should have never crossed The Beast exacts a heavy cost The number of the Beast is lost You will know it by its hissing The bones from hell you cannot tame Devour your life and all your fame That is the price to play its game And all while you're reminiscing
22:30 Funny enough, even though its anew comic. The Symbiote actually highjacked Peters body to let him rest, while the symbiote took on the role of Spiderman to protect the city ( However a more Violent Spidey, since it didn't know the difference between his and Spidey's version of being a super hero) Again, this is a new revelation in the comic series during the time of this post; but does kinda show it actually did like spidey and wanted to protect him.
7:14 Ok I get that these guys aren't exactly a brain trust, but this is REALLY dumb. If the device multiplies the power produced by generators, then we'll need LESS coal and other resources. This would HELP the environment, not hurt it.
While I have a hard time calling Venom one of my favorite Spider-Man villains, I do think he's one of the greatest characters in Spider-Man's ever-growing supporting cast. Part of that was due to marvel's push for Venom to be more of an anti-hero, which to be fair made for some interesting stories down the line. CARNAGE on the other hand, I think makes for one of, if not the most intimidating foes for NOT just Spider-Man, but ALL of Marvel comics due to being pure blunt brutal savagery and insanity all at once.
Actually Eddie was permanently bonded to the symbiote until he became Antivenom. It is proven in Sensational Spiderman: Back in Black , specifically in The Last Temptation of Eddie Brock in which it is shown that after selling the Symbiote, it still manifests within Brock's psyche, the symbiote even mentions that he is waiting Eddie to die, because the doctors will make Eddie an autopsy and set the symbiote free.
35:28 definitely a reference to Web of Shadows, a mixed bag that garnered more positive attention 16 years ago and many have claimed it as one of best Spider-Man video games ever made.
Wow. 9 years ago. This was actually the first Atop the Fourth Wall episode I’ve ever watched. To come back to it today feels like strolling down memory lane.
The Entity's hunger is a dark reflection of Lord Vice's need to control under the guise of "protecting" things. Vice's motivation later becomes a dark reflection of Linkara's own obsessive drive to save the Earth, as seen in that "evil hologram" plotline
Honestly everything that's said in this review, I can't help but agree. Instead of this feeling like a true creature feature horror thriller like John Carpenter's The Thing crossed with Invasion of the Body Snatchers, it's instead the Spiderman/Venom equivalent to Aliens. If I were the one writing this, it would start as any everyday Spider-Man outing, complete with him interacting with everyone around him. By the end Peter would notice that something isn't right with the way some people are acting. Then it's revealed that Ben Riley has a symbiote infecting him but not venom or any of the others Peter knows about and Ben explains desperately that it's a symbiote invasion. From then on, the following issues become a suspenseful mystery about who is infected and who isn't. To add tension, Peter could suspect or even pray for it not to be someone he loves like Mary Jane or Aunt May. Eventually, it's revealed that a chunk of both heroes, villains, and a mass of new York's population has been infected. As such it is now a battle for the sole of the city. Who will live and who will die?
Me (as news reporter): "Luckily, minimal damage happened. The world is in panic as people keep mysteriously disappearing. The cause is unknown, but it seems to only target people who are alone, so if you can stay with people, you have nothing to fear. I'm Ethan E-" ???: "Huuuuuummaaaannnn..." Me: "Oh no. SECURE THE BUILDING! NO ONE GOES IN OR OUT."
let's hear it for Venom having been around for 30 years now. And for the record, I like all the symbiotes, hell Eddie has had 3 different aliases in his tenure, Venom, Anti-Venom and Toxin. One last note, this is one reason I like retcons if used right, like the frickin Klintar thing that the symbiotes are now, as depicted in Guardians of the Galaxy
24:05 Actual Lee: despite symbiosis commonly thought to mean when two organism have a relationship which is mutually beneficial this is more specifically known as mutualism, which along with parasitism (where one organism benefits at the expense of another) and commensalism (where one organism benefits and the other isn't affected at all) all fall under the general term of symbiosis which just describes any relationship between two organism, so it is still accurate to call it the planet of the symbiotes. Also, it doesn't matter what you think sounds better Linkara, symbiote is a real word with an established pronunciation!
+Shade Dark The twist is awesome, but it only really makes sense if you're a hardcore Pokemon fan and know plenty of it's gaming history. A problem I had with it the first time I saw this.
+DeathofInk Absolutely. MissingNo is the best villain in Channel Awesome's history (sorry, Vyce, but you're too petulant) and marked the point when Linkara's plotlines got really good. Too bad he was basically a one-scene wonder... Basically. And, Linkara, if you're reading this right now... please don't bring MissingNo back. Don't get me wrong, I loved every scene he was a part of, and its buildup was tremendous, but it had an arc, and it's wasted if it just comes back after he willfully discorporated.
Venom is my absolute favorite Marvel character, in addition to my favorite Spidey villain. I loooove the current Venom series by Mike Costa and Gerardo Sandoval. Venom fighting my favorite dumb Marvel villain, Stegron? Yes please! Who is everyone's favorite Symbi-host? Mine would be a toss-up between Eddie and Flash.
Thank you for this wonderful review. It saved me a good bit of coin as i was thinking of buying this series. I'll just stick to King in Black for my Symbiote fix.
I also think Venom deserves the title of Arch-Enemy for Spiderman. Also, he should of been kept the way he was in his first appearance. Being a villain who sorely wants to kill Spider-Man and has the know-how to achieve it is way better then being an anti-hero. We have enough of those. I'm also not fond of the new "Venom".
I do think Flash Thompson Venom is awesome, or at least he was when he had his own solo comic, before being put in the GOTG and sidelined, but I agree that Venom needs to go back to basics. He was so much more compelling as a villain.
While I do prefer Venom as an enemy of Spider-Man, I do feel like Green Goblin earned his title as one of Spidey's archenemies, considering he was responsible for a LOT of bad things in Peter's life. Of course, given Norman Osborn's recent graduation to an enemy to the Avengers, I guess that does leave a spot open. Too bad Venom's too busy cycling between being a straight villain, an anti-hero, or whatever the writers want him to be, leaving Doctor Octopus as the only remaining member of the Big Three Spidey Villains as his nemesis. However, I also really like the idea that Venom, Goblin, and Doctor Octopus all collectively share the spot for Spider-Man's archenemy, in a similar vein as how The Cheetah, Ares, and Circe are generally considered Wonder Woman's three archenemies (even though in recent times Circe's been getting the edge out, because The New 52).
The Symbiotes are by far my favorite species in the Marvel universe. I hope at some point they can give them justice with a good series. Also, that sound effect is really fucking creepy.
I think part of the backlash against Carnage, in particular, is a case of poor timing. I think a lot of people lump him in with the trend of 'Take X Character, But Make Them EXTREME!' that was so prominent in the 90s, and wore out its welcome more quickly than the publishers realized. But Carnage legitimately posed an interesting question...well before they ended up handing the Venom symbiote itself around to half the Marvel universe...of what Venom would be like without Eddie Brock's sense of morality, twisted as it may be by his obsession. And as Venom was developing into more of an antihero than a full-on villain, I think that was a question worth asking.
You know... this might just a rumour, but I heard that an idea that was thrown around was making Mary-Jane a modern reincarnation of Red Sonja... I love this idea. So many people thought that she was boring, I don't necessarily agree but I can see why. So having her running around with A BATTLEAXE would be amazing, especially the team ups with her husband and bringing Red Sonja more into the Marvel Universe. Maybe if Mary-Jane was a moderate Red Sonja then they'd still be married... or at least the deal would be undone.
Unpopular opinion, but I actually prefer Venom as an anti-hero or hero than a villain. Flash Thompson’s Venom was so much more likable than Eddie Brock, and I love the idea of the symbiote itself undergoing a character arc that leads to it becoming a hero.
Interestingly, I also love Venom, to the point where he is one of my favorite Spider-Man characters, but I prefer him as the Anti-hero "lethal protector", over being a straight villain. The writers don't always do it justice, but at his best potential Venom can be pretty much my favorite Anti-hero, much more likable than someone like Jason Todd and much more interesting than someone like Frank Castle.
Holy crap. I'm a huge Spider-Man fan yet I've only read two comic books and watched all 5 movies plus some TV Shows. I do have a sort of "guide" to Spider-Man where it talks about stuff like this in a sort of general recap than actual detail. I really should go out and buy some of these comics despite how terrible they might be. In my own opinion, Venom is the best villain for Spidey and presents the biggest threat. Yeah the Green Goblin is great but, like you, I think Venom is a bigger threat. Carnage is good because of what he can do (using his symbiote to create actual weapons) but because he only uses it for villainy in general and not directly at Spider-Man makes him seem less threatening to Spider-Man.
Why do I get the feeling someone at MARVEL mentioned Planet of the Symbiotes to Disney's execs as they were coming through the MARVEL Universe looking for stuff for the MCU and their MARVEL Animated shows, specifically anything related to Venom, and in doing so revealed that there was more then one Symbiote so now it's YOU GET A SYMBIOTE AND YOU GET A SYMBIOTE SYMBIOTES FOR EVERYONE!!!
I kinda disagree on that notion, while Venom might be more effective as a villain, I personally am all for it him being a hero or anti-hero. This may sound absurd but it sometimes sucks to see villains with designs better than the heroes get their ass kick on a daily bases and Venom is an example (Okay not entirely cause Spiderman is actually pretty cool looking) It's like in some backwards universe the Power Rangers was the villains and Rita Repulsa, yes Rita Repulsa as the hero. I'm sorry if that sounded ignorant it's just how I feel.
Gat720Dua As a huge Venom/Eddie Brock fan, I agree on this. Him becoming an anti-hero is far more logical than anyone is willing to give credit for (he's far less villainous and bloodthirsty than Deadpool and I find it hilarious how people trash anti-hero Brock while they are perfectly with Magneto as an anti-hero.
KidSnivy69 That's just the case of the writers and maybe editors that doesn't know what their doing. The idea isn't bad it just depends on the execution, at least that's what I always believe.
saidi7975 Well it makes sense that people are fine with an anti hero Magneto, in comparison Magneto has a far more sympathetic motivations than Eddie did as a villain. He was an extremist who wanted the best for mutant kind who are mistreated, in comparison Eddie was a guy who hated Spider-Man. It’s not really hard to see why people are fine with Magneto being an anti hero.
YKW, I’m not totally against the “misunderstood symbiote” idea. Say it goes like this. When it first gets stuck to Peter, it doesn’t have a clue about flesh-creature “emotional boundaries” so it does all the shady mind-control crap. Then it gets rejected for the first time in its life, and joining with Eddie Brock crystallizes both in a moment of pure hate and spite. They have their stated goals, but on some level they both feed into a loop of hate thinking that’s what it takes to keep venom together. Think the “it only loves me… for the hate” moment in the spectacular Spider-Man cartoon. From there, you could somehow get them to reconcile and slide them into anti-hero status or separate them and get an agent venom storyline.
I don't know why, but the image of Scarlet Spider and Venom on the couch drinking beer and watching football is hilarious to me.
lol agreed

"You see, were I come from I was kind of a loser. Like you Eddie."

"The situation on Earth has deteriorated rapidly."
A statement that could either apply to the comic or real life.
Agent Venom was a pretty good take on the whole "Fighting the Symbiotes animalistic urges while trying to do good" thing. After the first Venom and Carnage himself I think he's probably one of the better Symbiote characters from Spider-man.

That fits so butch better with venom than this one.
It's got a very similar vibe to Khaji-Da and the Reach from Jaime Reyes' Blue Beetle. Which is kinda funny since Linkara is a huge fan of Blue Beetle
I come from the further future to inform everyone that Marvel is/did an event (king in black) all about Knull. Because I can.
I fucking hate Knull so I stick with this one...
Sure it did. Except I haven't read any of those and I'm not a Thor fan.

Well, in that case:
goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/2006/05/11/comic-book-urban-legends-revealed-50/3/
The Entity's voice and constant saying of,
Huuuuummmmmaaaaaaaannnn.
is just bonechilling when you hear it, just way to creepy to hear.
Beneath the sea beside the flame
Off the coast where the lost beast came
To bring the world misery and shame
A piece of the world is missing
The path you should have never crossed
The Beast exacts a heavy cost
The number of the Beast is lost
You will know it by its hissing
The bones from hell you cannot tame
Devour your life and all your fame
That is the price to play its game
And all while you're reminiscing
22:30 Funny enough, even though its anew comic. The Symbiote actually highjacked Peters body to let him rest, while the symbiote took on the role of Spiderman to protect the city ( However a more Violent Spidey, since it didn't know the difference between his and Spidey's version of being a super hero)
Again, this is a new revelation in the comic series during the time of this post; but does kinda show it actually did like spidey and wanted to protect him.
Using a Simple Plan song for the psychic emo screech - Flawless Victory.
7:14 Ok I get that these guys aren't exactly a brain trust, but this is REALLY dumb. If the device multiplies the power produced by generators, then we'll need LESS coal and other resources. This would HELP the environment, not hurt it.
12:20 So THAT'S how the 90's and early 2000's happened.
?
That reveal was awesome! I felt so tense as I watched it!
That cliffhanger still gives me goosebumps
35:34 plus a REAL 90's kid would know that Kurt Cobain left no body in death, he was cremated and his ashes scatter in a park.
They're like Cell Juniors only symbiotes ...but with less personally.
You know... watching this after watching the Venom movie makes a lot of scenes 10 times more hilarious xD
I kinda liked the thought that the symbiote wasn't an advanced species with sci fi technology. They were just parasites
"And remember, what you see, is what you get.... Or is it?"
Mary Jane suggesting that Peter ought to put on his suit seems just a joke you know.
90's Kid is the Entity.... Suddenly M. Night Shamalan appears out of nowhere yelling what a twist
He then disappears in a fog of static and a creepy high-pitched voice saying "HUUUUUUUUUUMAAAAAAAAN."
The Scarlet Spider looks so naked without his hoodie.
35:28 definitely a reference to Web of Shadows, a mixed bag that garnered more positive attention 16 years ago and many have claimed it as one of best Spider-Man video games ever made.
I don't care what Bob Chipman says, Venom is awesome.
Nobody cares what movieblob says anyway.
Wow. 9 years ago. This was actually the first Atop the Fourth Wall episode I’ve ever watched. To come back to it today feels like strolling down memory lane.
I wonder what Linkara think about the "King in Black" marvel event
God, those glitchy eyes and voice still creep me out. I'm still wondering how you managed to do that effect with your eyes.
video editing...
Guard: He moved!
Doctor: Naaah he's in a coma. Nobody ever comes out of one of those!
Me (as news reporter): "Luckily, minimal damage happened. The world is in panic as people keep mysteriously disappearing. The cause is unknown, but it seems to only target people who are alone, so if you can stay with people, you have nothing to fear. I'm Ethan E-"
???: "Huuuuuummaaaannnn..."
Me: "Oh no.
I wonder if hearing JewWario mentioned will ever not feel wrong again...
I laughed so hard when the sad symbiote untitled song played 😂😂
venom and carnage also have attainable, realistic goals compared to most villains. neither really want world domination or anything like that.
Thomas Jenkins Kill Spiderman and kill and destroy everything, respectively.
islamroks11
still very attainable and realistic goals.
Thomas Jenkins Venom, yeah. Carnage, not so much.
islamroks11
i dunno. there are enough ways to completely destroy a planet in the marvel universe that it's not out of the question.
Thomas Jenkins He's saying that Carnage doesn't *have* a goal.
Web of Shadows did this right
24:05 Actual Lee: despite symbiosis commonly thought to mean when two organism have a relationship which is mutually beneficial this is more specifically known as mutualism, which along with parasitism (where one organism benefits at the expense of another) and commensalism (where one organism benefits and the other isn't affected at all) all fall under the general term of symbiosis which just describes any relationship between two organism, so it is still accurate to call it the planet of the symbiotes.
Also, it doesn't matter what you think sounds better Linkara, symbiote is a real word with an established pronunciation!
So... Missing Number as in... MissingNo?
Shade Dark Yuppers.
Linkara-AtopTheFourthWall
Well... This tale of a long time ago that i SHOULD have been following before... just got epic...
+Shade Dark The twist is awesome, but it only really makes sense if you're a hardcore Pokemon fan and know plenty of it's gaming history.
A problem I had with it the first time I saw this.
***** It's a direct-to-video movie that I reviewed with Phelous.
+DeathofInk
Absolutely.
It's kinda refreshing to see a reviewer that likes the symbiote. Usually you see them saying they're overrated.
Re; Anniversary announcement
Man, the Smash Bros Brawl theme is never not going to be an absolute epic of a music piece. Fuck that game was so good.
"Raindrops keep fallin' on my head." Wuh? The same song used in Spider-man 2? Is that a reference? A coincidence? Why that song?
The brain-eating is an inside joke about the talking Venom action figure that said "DIE, SPIDERMAN! I WANT TO EAT YOUR BRAIN!"
I wonder what linkara's thoughts are on agent venom and flash Thompson ?
The Symbiotes are by far my favorite species in the Marvel universe. I hope at some point they can give them justice with a good series. Also, that sound effect is really fucking creepy.
My second favorite alien species.
37:09 And that's where the Entity made mistake...
It used 80's slang!
Happy 3 year Anniversary, Linkara!!
This is a rerun. Not an actual up to date episode. Sorry.
dbreiverd The sentiment is appreciated, though. ^_^
Linkara-AtopTheFourthWall Love the videos Linkara, big fan
Linkara-AtopTheFourthWall truly it is :)
Wait a minute! Is this comic why 'Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head' plays in 'Spiderman 2?'
This and Lethal Protector are cited as the main influences in the Venom movie. This worries me greatly.
You know... this might just a rumour, but I heard that an idea that was thrown around was making Mary-Jane a modern reincarnation of Red Sonja...
Fred Jones same
First episode of the show I watched. Boy was I in for a shock
Interestingly, I also love Venom, to the point where he is one of my favorite Spider-Man characters, but I prefer him as the Anti-hero "lethal protector", over being a straight villain. The writers don't always do it justice, but at his best potential Venom can be pretty much my favorite Anti-hero, much more likable than someone like Jason Todd and much more interesting than someone like Frank Castle.
i and people might not like it but i like the version of venom they used in the 2018 movie
God, those "HHHHYYYYYYUUUUUUUU-MMMMMMAAAAAANNNNNNN" things are fucking freaky.
And Osborn's supposed to be dead.
This may sound absurd but it sometimes sucks to see villains with designs better than the heroes get their ass kick on a daily bases and Venom is an example (Okay not entirely cause Spiderman is actually pretty cool looking)
It's like in some backwards universe the Power Rangers was the villains and Rita Repulsa, yes Rita Repulsa as the hero.
I can see you sentiment, but it's a pity most of the time the stories kind of suck.
KidSnivy69 That's just the case of the writers and maybe editors that doesn't know what their doing. The idea isn't bad it just depends on the execution, at least that's what I always believe.
+Gat the Man I was technically agreeing with you. I'm not agaisnt Venom being an anti-hero
saidi7975 Well it makes sense that people are fine with an anti hero Magneto, in comparison Magneto has a far more sympathetic motivations than Eddie did as a villain.
Missigno as a villain>Venom as a hero
So what are your thoughts on the “venom” movie, linkara? As well as “into the spider-verse”?
13:42- Um, ...so this is a bit of foreshadowing on what happens in the end of this episode?
Making Venom an anti-hero worked well in the 2018 movie.
Nice VR Troopers reference!
