    Dear Linkara, I am 28 years old. I turned 16 years old when I discovered your content. I had serious suicidal tendencies. The videos of yourself and The Spoony One kept those dark thoughts at the edge of my mind. I can't thank you enough for that. Over a decade later I am beyond proud to both witness and support the content that kept me alive. For over a decade you kept me from surrendering to despair and helped me crack my knuckles and ask what's next? I found what's next and it made me happy. I couldn't have reached this point without your silly help. Thank you.

    Man, I never really registered how what happened to Jim Gordon was just as much a sexual assault as what happened to Barbara. It shows how conditioned we are to see sexual assault of men as "comedic" or trivial. (Not an attack on you of course Linkara, just an observation)

    • @Sperium3000
      @Sperium3000 8 месяцев назад +43

      It's cultural. Media has trained us to see sexual assault on men with less severity than with women. When it comes to sexism, women do get it worst, there is no doubt about that, but internalized sexism against men does exist. It's so ingrained in us we may not realize even when we're aware of it.

    I want to thank you for including multiple entries on this list about past times you have been insensitive on certain topics. You consistently address them well by offering a sincere apology, not trying to come up with excuses, and explaining what's wrong in an attempt to educate viewers all without centering it on yourself. With as common as apology videos have become, few people do them as well as you do.

    I will admit that I thought the “Killing Joke” jokes that you made in the review were humorous but then when you included them on the list, it reminded me of an issue that our culture is still bias about and that is when a man gets sexually assaulted it’s either no big deal or even funny but when a woman gets sexually assaulted its treated appropriately as something horrible.
    I think that double standard is terrible and that everyone needs to be reminded that men can be victims of similar circumstances, especially myself.
    Thank you for all the work you put into to make insightful but also fun content.
    Maybe this year will be better than the last.

    Don't feel too bad about getting the Shadow Android thing wrong. When Shadow was first introduced, there was a consistent recurring trend in the series of various characters mistaking him and Sonic for one another (that's been turned into something of a running joke since they look and act nothing alike). So I can totally see it being a running joke in-universe to have characters mistake the Shadow Androids for Metal Sonic despite them being completely separate robots.
    And thank you Linkara for continuing to do what you do and for always striving to be better at it. I first started watching these videos as a depressed teenager with serious anger issues, but I've come a long way since then and I always look forward to your show. Your optimistic outlook and fun snark are a true delight, and always remind me of the bright parts of humanity that the best superhero comics always try to show in people. Hope you have a good year.

    As far as Teen Titans goes, the story I've always heard is that the show didn't have the budget for a 6th regular VA, so they could only do a few episodes with Terra before she could be considered a regular. It's why the show liked to use Gizmo as one of the default bad guys, because his VA was Tara Strong, who was already on the cast as Raven.
    The no-continuity thing is a little weird given stuff like Justice League and Ben 10 were pretty continuity-heavy and also running around the same time. And, of course, it's especially weird now when they have stuff like Steven Universe, Adventure Time, Gumball, and Craig of the Creek.

    I only know what Crazy Quilt looks like because he was featured very prominently in the _Batman: The Brave and the Bold_ animated series episode "The Color of Revenge!", otherwise I'd have had no idea. In the episode, Robin accidentally blinds Crazy Quilt and, years later, the guy returns seeking revenge. It was one of the more memorable episodes. It also dealt with a Robin who stopped being sidekick to Batman during that time-skip and explored the relationship between the two.

      Another interesting one is the body swap episode where Batwoman wanted to make The Riddler pay for unmasking her. Because it's one of the few animated body swap stories without the voice issue. Which means that if I had a nickel for every superhero cartoon which had at least one body swap story without the voice issue. I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that I know its happened twice (for the record. The other one is the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon)

We as a society really need to work on accepting that sexual misconduct/violence can happen to anyone, regardless of who they are (to your credit, you did mention that a bit in your Identity Crisis review.) People who have been harmed in such ways should be encouraged to seek help & have easy/affordable access to therapy to help them overcome difficulties & properly heal. You (& Bennet the Sage addressing a similar situation during his De:vadasy review) have helped to nudge things in a small, but not insignificant way, in the proper direction. Hopefully more people will follow suit eventually.

    Hey Linkara, ambitious plans for 2024, having a solid 52 episode. I know it might seem like 2023 was short in episodes, but it's worth noting that your episodes are also longer than they used to be. If you want some heartening math, between 2010 and 2022, the amount of hours (not episodes, hours) of Atop the 4th Wall every year came to almost exactly 25 hours. That's about a half hour of content a week for 50 weeks out of the year, and 2 weeks for time off, so overall extraordinarily solid. 2023 was a bit short, but not the shortest year you've had.
    Point is, I respect the hustle, but don't feel like you've been letting us down. You've been one of the most consistent creators I've watched considering you're such a small team of mostly just you. Don't work yourself into any early graves.

    The Heel/Face thing is an easy enough mistake to make. Just remember that Heel means evil, Face means good, and turn means to change between the two.
    For example: "Fans were pissed when Cassandra Cain had a Face-Heel Turn and wanted to make Robin evil too."
    Example 2: "The Swordsman started as a villain, then made a Heel-Face Turn and joined The Avengers."
    Maybe Song of Orpheus could just be a short (10 minute) filler review? It's not terribly long and would help you get closer to your resolution. If nothing else, it's good "falling behind, need content while I work on another review" fodder.
    Whatever the case, best of luck in 2024.

    in regards to the algonquin spirit, it's an easy to understand mistake if you didn't know. It shows up in a lot of places that one would not think it problematic. While Until Dawn probably made it very popular, it predates that. There is the Marvel Character as you mentioned, but there is also a digimon named after it and i know it is a creature in DnD. Hell, the Supernatural series had it in their second episode. it's one of those things you just gotta take on the chin and try and be better. If you ever do need to discuss the Marvel character, my friends and I just use the fast food chain of Wendy's to convey what we mean.

    Quick one about item 6 (I know but hold on a second)
    A lot of the "Masterplan" was Cartmell's notes on the subject. It's kinda important as a writer to have the answers to mysteries. Even if you don't intend for those mysteries ever really be answered publicly. It helps with consistency and keeps the "world"of the story whole.
    This is the big problem with the JJ Abrams "Mystery Box" concept. Abrams doesn't care what's in the box, so when other writers aren't given the outline they have to make it up themselves and thus we get confusing messes were plot points just vanish.
    the thing with the Masterplan was it was the great unfinished work. It was interesting, had been woven into more or less two seasons at that point and was the big mystery behind so much. Fans lashed on to it like a life raft during the wilderness years until it built up it's own mythology

There was a book released about a month before The Killing Joke called Batgirl Special #1 which had the story "The Last Batgirl Story" and supposedly, according to the writer of that book, Barbara Kesel, she was commissioned to write this book to specifically to allow for the status quo changes that The Killing Joke would cause.
    Plus, since the first book to reference what happened in The Killing Joke after it happened was in Batman #426, AKA, the first part of A Death in the Family, which came out only five months later, this does seem to support the idea it was always meant to be canon and not an Elseworlds sort of thing.

    I know it's better safe than sorry, but the Windigo thing... isn't true. That's white people assuming that the Windigo is culturally similar to another Native American spirit, not an Algonquin one but from the southwestern tribes -- a shapeshifter often flattened to be just another form of Werewolf when it is something far, FAR worse. The reason you don't say its name is that it grows more powerful the more it is feared, and a person who asks about it may be one themselves.
    Windigo lore isn't anything like that. Emily Zarcha of Monstrum/Storied/PBS did a full episode on it, and as an acredited folklorist, she's a good source on it even if she isn't native. It never came up in her discussions of it.
    Windigo, BTW, is the proper spelling/pronunciation.
    You do you, of course, and If you want verification on it, go ahead and look. Heck, I can give you written sources on the matter from native writers (mostly from John Bierhorst). It's knowing who to listen to on this subject that's important, and there are a lot of self-righteous white people who like to appropriate native cultures.
    And in the process mix and match them, like the Windigo here is being conflated with the ... monster whose name isn't supposed to be said from the southwest that changes shape.

    • @AT4W
      @AT4W  8 месяцев назад +2

      Dude, I did research, too, and mine said that it was true. Admittedly, you are naming your sources and I did not keep track of that, so I can't exactly back up this up the same way, but yes - I did go and look and there were interviews with Natives and papers and they did indeed say it was taboo to mention it and that that was the creature they were referring to.

    • @majingojira
      @majingojira 8 месяцев назад

      @@AT4W I don't doubt you did! But there's a lot of misinformation out there. The Algonquin Peoples, being one of the first to meet Europeans in particular got hit hard by colonialism. I did a research project on the Deleware/Lenapi, who (being from Jersey/New York) got it bad, including a bout of deliberately fake infomration set out by white folks to try and prove a pet theory of theirs. It's a mess!
      That monster's folklore in particular got hit -- the entire image of a deerskull and antlers is totally a white person's invention, much like the Voodoo Doll comes from Europe rather than actual Voodoo.
      For that cannibal ice giant, the Passamaquadi called it "Chenoo." One of the books I have on Native American Folklore is titled "Where the Chenoo Howls." If you're still uncomfortable with saying the name, I'd go with that one. I assume that since it got to be the title of an anthology, it got to work.
      The only monster in Native Folklore I know of with that taboo is the Navajo Witch shapeshifter, whose very lore explicitly tells you why you shouldn't say its name.
      Chenoo don't have that in their stories, at least the ones I've been able to find. But the main story variants I've found are about heroes who hunt them or about a girl who tricked one into a sauna to purify it.

    • @gryphonofmight
      @gryphonofmight 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@AT4W from what i've looked into....you are BOTH correct. Important to remember, the Algonquin are not a single tribe but ten tribes and different tribes have different perspectives on it. I have seen many Ojibwe be open about it and use the name and discuss the stories, Nathan Niigan Noodin Adler, an Ojibwe of the Lac des Mille Lacs First Nation used the monster in their novel "Wrist" and in it they combined the traditional Ojibwe legend with non indigenous interpretations and there was a movie made about it in Quebec starring members of the Abitibiwinni first nation community that won awards from first nations film festivals and the director was of the tribes as well. Among some tribes, yes they dont like the name being spoken but among others, the taboo is not the same but they do want people to stop using the monster because its not like the stories at all, with some Ojibwe writers and scholars saying they would be okay with a respectful depiction. So again, it seems you BOTH are correct

    Thanks for the shout-out, I think. I think I'm the one who mentioned the episode count, where in the Doctor Who: The Klepton Parasites review, I commented that with that episode we had 35 reviews and with only 4 weeks left in the year we would only have four reviews left equally 39, even though I would argue that because this Top 15 came out in 2024 that technically we only had 38 but that's neither here nor there. But thanks for the possible shout-out, my obsessiveness when it comes to numbers sometimes has finally gotten me recognized. :)
    Normally this is the part of the comment where I would list all the reviews this year and say which ones I liked and which ones I didn't like I did for the last few end-of-the-year top 15s, but honestly, I just don't feel like doing that. I usually do that to prove and show my loyalty that I did watch everything, except Late Night Double Feature really not a fan of that, but 2023 was just draining, and as much as I love you're content, Linkara, because it is really good, the constant schedule slippages really got to me. However, that's mainly due to who I am as a person, it's got nothing to do with you, Linkara, you're still awesome. I like to plan everything out so I can maximize my day, doesn't always work out for me, lol, but I do try. And I'm also kind of lonely, which is why I comment so much because I hope I have something interesting to say that will start some kind of conversation I can be a part of. So when a new review drops on a day I'm not prepared for it can be taxing because I'm compelled to watch it as soon as possible and come up with a comment to try and be a part of the coversation as soon as possible before I get buried by the sea of comments because you are very popular, Linkara, because like I said you are awesome and deserve it. And sometimes this causes me to fall behind, especially if it's a long video as I like to finish the whole thing and not comment before I have the entire context of what's going on, all the other channels I'm subscribed to and other things I have to do that come out on time and then I'm rushing to do everything I set out to do that day. I am a man of constancy and habit and that can be a double-edged sword sometimes for me.
    However, I don't want to just focus on the negatives, as such, I will at least mention a few things I really liked about you're content this year; loved the US 1 and DC Challenge stuff like always, and the Sandman was a cool series and a nice retrospective, I'm not a big horror fan but this year's Ring reviews were really great and awesome, as was the Spider-man one, I loved the conclusion of the contest of Champions like I said in my comment on that video, it was really great and epic, and lastly, while I'm not a super big Doctore Who fan, having only seen a few episodes featuring the 9th, 10th, and 11th Doctors, as well as a few clips from older and newer stuff after those three here and there, I have to say Remberance of the Delks from what I saw in you're review seems like a really great episode and you're review was great. So despite the tribulations of this year, thank you for all the fun videos this year Linkara, I'm looking forward to this year's worth of videos, even if we don't hit 52 I'm sure it will be fun because we've got Event Comics Month and I love that month, and I'm also hopeful that the Christmas stuff and Secret Origins month don't lose stuff this year because I love those things so I'm hopeful depending on how the weeks pan out that we get three or four reviews for each.
    Also, if you need any suggestions for the next Mistakes video, I've got one I've been holding onto for years, I've said it before I'll say it again, in the Rogue One Review, you miss used the term god mode as what Vader did in the hallway scene is not godly, even discounting all the extra stuff like TV shows, as seen in the Prequel Movies and even Return of the Jedi with Luke fighting Jabba's henchmen, a decently skilled Jedi or Sith should be able to take down like 10 or 20 dudes without to much difficulty, especially in a closed area where they have little maneuverability. So it's not god mode, it's just a regular Tuesday for someone of Vader's skill level that he should be capable of.
    Man look at me, I didn't talk about all the reviews this year to save time and trim the comment's length, and I still made this a pretty long comment. I guess I'm just as much of a windbag as you, Linkara, but that's another reason I like you so much. Thanks again for this year's worth of videos, they weren't all winners, but they were still fun.

    Hmm...didn't think Linkara would put the words New and 52 anywhere near each other for a few years to avoid a PTSD trigger.

      Maybe he's referencing the good 52 comic?

    The Killing Joke "actions taken by the villain are assumed to be bad" reminds me of the snl skit where Dwayne Johnson builds a (TW) "child-molesting robot" and all the other evil geniuses are just horrified.

    Oh, we're already in an era where people are nostalgic for early RUclips content. For example - Ray Narvaez Jr. (a former member of Achievement Hunter/Rooster Teeth) now regularly does collab streams with vtuber Chibidoki, who grew up with Ray's content on Achievement Hunter (she refers to AH as her boy band growing up). Chibi will constantly make references to Ray's days at AH, despite that phase of his life being over nearly a decade ago.

    Enter? People are already nostalgic for early youtube content. Heck, Markiplier is at this point an elder statesman of the platform and in his avantgarde phase.

    One of the Mistakes that you did make was in Batman & Robin the comic adaptation, and Batman Odyssey # 2, both having to do with C02 tanks and the Predator. We all know that in the first Predetor movie, that Dutch was able to hide from the Predators Inferred vision because he was covered in mud. in reality however? the human body can heat mud up really fast once it makes skin to skin contact, and there was even a kinda sorta meta call back to this in the third Batman & Predator Crossover where in the Predators broke into Mister Freeze's hidehout, killed his henchmen, and he was out of his suit, but the Predators couldn't see him because of his mutated body. This is important to remember, because you made a predator joke in the Batman & Robin comic review, in reality, if you spray someone with cold chemicals like C02 (Which you shouldn't because it's dangerous), the human body can instantly heat up and slowly begins melting the patches of cold from the C02. Interesting fact about inferred detection, it's not impossible to trick, however, means like mud smearing, or normal camoflouge that one might assume, when in fact it's very tricky, especailly when a single change in inferred detection can easily set an alarm off right away. nuff said

    The first episode of NCIS addressed the Air Force One issue. A murder on AF1 forced the president to switch to the backup plane. It was pointed out several times that made the backup plane AF1.
