    Impressive I used make precision cutter blades and mill bits. We always said never say what it measures till you mic it or measure it and it’s always clean it to make sure nothing can throw off the measurements. Didn’t know engines were so precise my mechanic just put it together and never mentioned any of this stuff.

    Great videos. The last bit reminded me of something that bugs me about Cat engines.
    Is it just me or do they put small studs in the heads for the exhaust manifold? In the last year I’ve had to have three machines down for a day or two to replace the exhaust manifold studs. All had two three broken studs and where leaking. Two C7.1 acert and an old 3306. Love the engines and their products but let’s up the size of studs one or two so we don’t have to deal with this crap.
    Any thoughts on why so small?

    I'm not sure what I think of Cat using a spacer plate arrangement. What is the benefit and are there any issues sealing the block side of the plate. I like the idea of being able to fit a new one. Sorry for being thick, it's just that no engine I've ever worked on other than Cat has this plate. Living in the UK in the early 90's I supported a decision to buy some trucks with the 3306 engine in. They were such a disaster, I nearly got fired for buying them, not to mention all the black exhaust smoke that no other non-Cat engine had. We live and learn as they say. Good video, thank you.

So I have the truck set at 900 rpm when I pull the yellow break. So when I start in the morning it starts at a 900 rpm you think that's fine or should I push the yellow break in 1st in the morning for couple of minutes and then set at a higher rpm .Is the motor gonna be fine if the engine always starts at 900 rpm? • @AdeptApe

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  2 года назад +3

      I do separate them as you can see the pistons are out, I do label them though so the pistons stay with the liner they came out of. I don't think it matters, but just for tracking purposes. I've installed them before without doing the measurements and it saves probably 2 hours of labor, although the complete cylinder packs are heavy and awkward to install. If the protrusion is off though you are pulling the whole thing out then.

    Hey josh have a 3304 PC was wondering what PC stood for ? Any idea where I can get a repair manual for this specific engine it’s on a irrigating lift pump

    • @johngoldsmith6629
      @johngoldsmith6629 2 года назад

      PC stands for precombustion chamber. Old Cat engines (when fuel was dirt cheap) used this design. The precombustion chamber that screwed into the cylinder head, had the nozzle and glow plug in it. The nozzle would inject fuel into the precombustion chamber and ignite down onto the piston. The piston had a plug dead center to help absorb the heat and keeping from burning a hole in the piston. The other lingo is DI or direct injection. The nozzle chamber was designed so the tip of the nozzle extends pass the bottom of the cylinder head. So you cannot mix pistons up, because of the ignition process. If you do black smoke, early hour failure. In the truck world you cannot pull a DI engine out and replace it with a PC. I cannot say off road. The reason is the cylinder head on a PC engine carries a lot more heat from ignition process and a PC engine runs a bigger cooling system package. So you could have PCT, Precombustion Chamber Turbocharged, PCTA Precombustion Chamber Turbocharged Aftercooler, or DIT, DITA, NA naturally aspirated, JWAC Jacket Water Aftercooled,
      ATAAC Air To Air Aftercooled.
      As with a service manual you must start with the engine prefix. Cat uses a three digit prefix. Examples of truck engines include but not limited to 92U, 7FB, 65B, 02Z, 5EK, SDP, 63Z, 9TL. That tells Cat what you have.
      Once you have the serial number, you have to see if a media number still is available. The media number also has a code that includes what language it is printed in.

  • @MrBullfrog92
    @MrBullfrog92 Год назад

    Does a 3306 use the same bolts and washers? 3306 is a 5/8" bolt. I think 3304 may be larger. The 3306 manual lists that it uses a copper washer instead of the fiber ones. I think the fiber ones are a newer procedure instead of the coper washer and cross bar setup for the liner. Confusing why the cat manual would say it takes 12 bolts and tweve washers. I count it would take 14 of each. Also it says put the bolts on using 2 washers. That would take 28 in my accounting but again cat manual says 12. Extermely confusing!

    • @johngoldsmith6629
      @johngoldsmith6629 2 года назад +2

      Find the problem and correct it.
      Liner is .350 flange
      plate is .338 thick
      gasket .008 roughly
      Plate and gasket roughly .346 total
      minus from liner is roughly .004 projection.
      Cat wants a milled top deck min of .001 to .006
      Counterbored block min .003 to .006.
      The crush on the gasket is maxed out and really not doing any good. Also at some point you will crack liner flanges.

    Just to understand everything measuring the old liner, spacer , shim you found -0.05 under zero deck protrusion.. so you cut counter bore. 0.29 and used a 0.30 shim leaving the block with a plus 0.01 above deck ring to support liner a positive 0.01
    Where do you make up the difference ? From the new shim under spacer, new liner , spacer? Going from -0.05 in the hole to +0.05 protrusion that's a. + 0. 10 swing of stacked tolerances but machine work only resulted in a +0.01 gain! can i count on a
    + 0.35 gain from new inframe parts when measuring liner protrusion.. any one of the other cat guys responding

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  Год назад

      With no shims on a new deck you will usually see about .003-.004" protrusion. The engine is designed to have that much protrusion with the assembled parts, so you are really just trying to get it within spec.

    • @Lexus2691
      @Lexus2691 Год назад

      Thanks for responding i have a concern there are two visible lines in block around the liner bore i cant feel them but i can see them is this a mandatory cut counter bore indicator even if the protrusion is 0.025 to 0.035.
      Ive also seen spacer plates 0.03 thinner if that plate makes 0.065 protrusion will that cause water and return oil leaks or crack liners.

      They are, but Cat has had so many failures due to improper assembly. They require certain guidelines on a rebuild or it won't be under warranty. One article is SEBF9008 that is very important.

    I love DOTW, but it cannot compare to Russian tanks blown up in Ukraine. Look closely, you may see entire rotating assemblies ejected from crank cases, among other destructive delights.

      I'm not sure why they want those bolts so tight anyway, it's just holding the liner down to check it.
