This looks great, and the video is generally well done, but I do have to criticize one element. The trim you used is 1x4, which actually measures 3/4” thick. The drywall is 1/2” by code, so if you are using 1-1/4” nails, you are not hitting the studs at all. I know you used the glue on the verticals, but you also attached them with 1-1/4” nails. Anyplace you could hit a stud 2” nails would have been the better choice.
I was wondering the same thing. I don't see the use of brad nailing into the drywall alone, but I think that's what they did to accommodate their spacing?
I am very new to this and getting ready to tackle my wall. I was told to use a 1 1/2 brad nail soI did not go too far past the drywall in case there are pipes or electrical. Should I just stick to a 2" brad and identify as many studs as possible? Thanks
For the baseboard trim, there shouldn’t be any plumbing or electrical that low, so 2” brads would be appropriate to secure the trim through the drywall into the bottom plate. For the upper horizontal piece, that should also be secured using 2” brads going into the studs spaced at 16” on center. The vertical pieces, however, are not necessarily aligned w the vertical studs, so 1 1/4” brads would be appropriate for the reason you mentioned. That said, when shooting those in, you can angle them up or down for a little extra hold, tho really those pieces will be secured in place by the adhesive once it cures.
That looks like 1/4 MDF
Update! At 2:45 I said to use 1 1/4" long nails into the wall studs, but it should be 2" nails into the studs!
How do you know where the studs are and what if they don't correspond with where you want your vertical boards situated?
You can put the top and bottom board into the stud. The vertical boards should be fine with just the glue and Brad nails. You can use a magnet to find the studs. The magnet will stick to the drywall screws that are hidden underneath the paint. Then just go up or down since the studs will be vertical. If you have good hearing you can knock on the wall and find the studs too. The knock will sound more solid or muted when knocking over the stud. If there’s no stud it will sound hollow
Great new look on a plain wall. Well done, thanks!
Thank you :)
How did you plan around the outlets in the wall or was that just a lucky accident?
What I would do is use her math and see if the outlets falls inside the openings. If they don’t, I would reduce or increase the number of boards and do the calculations again to see if they fit within the openings. Using paint tape for mock up will be very helpful to visualize before cutting boards.
How lucky was it that the vertical boards didn’t fall where receptacles were? Or did you factor that into your math measurements? I’m about to do the same and the light switch and receptacle fall oddly due to it being an old house
At first we didn't but after we laid the boards out before attaching realized we had to factor them into the measurements.
Wouldn’t it be easier & cheaper to get it CNC machined in angles or two pieces and spray adhesive it on. They could machine off opposite of mounding if change mind when sold often. 10 minutes, no waste or less.
American construction is absurdly wasteful, they make it from eps foam composite mesh pain or fiberglass resin. Even rubbish not new trees, maybe that’s made of trash wood shavings but can absorb moisture? Cool diy, old ways are wasteful at least STEM biochemistry is changing!
Beautiful. But y’all only used battens. Because there’s no board behind the batten.
Battens were used to hide the gaps between board planks.
Beautiful We are getting our wall done now.
That's really nice. I've been wondering how you treat existing moldings. Very helpful. Lowes has a BB video and they add crown molding along the top for a really classic appearance. Helpful video, thanks.
Thank you! We removed the existing trim molding along the board & batten wall but left the molding the same for the rest of the room.
Where can I find this video?
Thank y'all for creating this video, it is fantastic and helped me tremendously! My sister is wanting this exact project done in her nursery and your instructional video gave me all the confidence I needed to get started, thank y'all for taking the time to help us all out!
That is amazing to hear, thank you so much for sharing!!!! You're an awesome brother!
No please place actual board on the wall like a sheet of plywood so you actually have a wood look wall and not have the structure of the wall above between the battens on the bottom.. it just looks incomplete
Thanks for the feedback!
❤ thank you so much for this very informative video , I am going to follow your instructions , it's a beautiful accent wall...I will definitely buy the primed board & batten .....looking forward to seeing your other projects ....thank you 🇨🇦
If your wall is textured, do you need to cover the wall with something flat like a flat board before you do your board and batten or would it look OK to just put it over the top of your now textured wall?
Put a couple boards in place to see how you would like the look of the textured wall with board & batten.s Leaving the texture finish would be the easiest and less time consuming but if you do not like the look then some 1/4" plywood could be used. Great question, thank you!
The wall looks amazing thank you for this tutorial. Question in regards to dimensions of the 1x4 you mentioned the actual width is actually 3.5 inches? Is it because you got the wrong one or is that how 1x4 boards are? I’m a newbie and doing my calculations for a 178 inch in length wall .
Hey, that's a great question. The 1x4 actual width is 3.5 inches and that is a standard for lumber. I have a a much better and in depth explanation on my blog with a free printable chart: angelamariemade.com/intro-to-woodworking-lumber-size-guide-free-printable/
I have followed the formula but my numbers are coming out to far off for the spacing.
Wall width = 149.25
Wall length =101.75
Formula for width
3.5 x 6 = 21
149.25 - 21=129 25
129.25÷ 5 = 25.65
Formula for length
3.5 x 6 = 21
101.75 - 21 = 80.75
80.75÷5 = 16.15
UGH!!!!!!! What am I doing wrong????
Please show us how it looks with the furniture on your next video. Have a great weekend :D
Great idea! I should have included that in the video! I''ll add a link to the final nursery reveal with it in the description box. Here is the link too: angelamariemade.com/blue-and-gray-nursery-reveal/
The wall came out beautifully. I would like to know if the wall was textured when you started? I have watched many videos on this and people have said that they put a plywood board on the wall to cover it before they get started because of the texture. Your thoughts?
Nice, but base and top board should be nailed with 2”brads to reach the stud.
This is a really good idea. I was looking at making something for my wall and you came up in my search. Great job and thank you for making the video.
Glad it was helpful!
Could i use a finish nailer instead of Brad for this kind of project ?
Love this video! Definitely helped me out. Doing my front entry way like this.
That is awesome to hear, thank you!!
The glue is so unnecessary, nails only. The next owner is going to have to replace to drywall after prying that off. You're creating much unnecessary extra work for yourself or others in the future.
I disagree, it would not be that much drywall work on 7 - 1x3's, minimal work really. I personally don't plan on taking it off either. And I definitely don't trust my kids from prying one off the wall and running around with a nail sticking out of a board because I didn't want to put adhesive on and create soooo much extra work for the next owner😂😂😂
@AngelaMarieMade that's why you're not a professional and just a diyer. diyers ruin things for us professionals and we have to come in and fix your shoddy work all the time
Very informative! It turned out great!!
Thank you so much!
Wow! That looks awesome! Love the floors too, where did you get them and how is the quality? I'm trying to find a flooring in a similar shade and can't seem to find what I'm looking for in my price range! Thanks!
Thank you so much! The floors are Pergo Outlast in Vienna Oak from Home Depot, I love them! I actually did a whole review on them here: angelamariemade.com/pergo-outlast-review/
Could you leave the existing baseboard?
You could, but it could look really funny depending on the thickness of the baseboard. If your baseboard is thinner than your battens, I would replace the baseboard for the most professional look!
EVERYBODY is doing this wall. I've seen dozens just like it on RUclips.
I see you painted after install the trim. I was thinking you’d do it before hand so you could every square inch
I would recommend using a pocket hole jig to install this. Cut and assemble the board and batten on the floor, and then attach to the wall. Seams will be perfect and will have a much more finished look. Pocket hole jigs are very simple to use. You should also put the baseboard back at the bottom to complete the look.
They did put the base board back on the bottom. In UK these are called skirtings.
Wow. You made it look so easy. I’m gonna try it. Thanks so much I’ll let you know how it goes
That's great!! thank you😄
Can you do this on a wall with texture?
Yes, it could be used on a textured wall. Depending on what the material is of the wall you may need to use different hardware to attach it to the wall.
What size top board and baseboard did you use? I have a 5 1/4" baseboard. Trying to decide what size top board to use.
I used a 1x4 for the baseboard and the top board!
Why no 1/4" plywood on drywall?
The wall was in pretty good shape so I didn't think it was necessary. Thank you for the question!
Hi! Question! From what it seems like, the boards are all the same size boards in width, correct? Besides the top board. I heard it’s 1x4 boards used for both the long ways and up and down parts of the board. Is that right?
Yes, the baseboard and the battens are all 1x4s! I used a 1x2 on the top board to create the ledge. I have all of the instructions and material list written out on my blog: angelamariemade.com/diy-board-and-batten-wall/
Hi can u measures for me? My wall lenght about 9feet 110. How many batten i need?
That would depend on how you want to space them out and how many battens you want! I have the equation for perfect spacing written out in my blog post which might be helpful: angelamariemade.com/diy-board-and-batten-wall/
Great work on the accent wall!!
One other thing you can do to help with the gaps so you don’t have to caulk as much is to hold the vertical pieces on the baseboard and make a mark where it meets the top board and that should give you a very tight fit.
Thank you and great tip!!
Can I ask what the cost was for this wall? I have about the same size wall, and I know I can do it myself, but would rather just hire it out. After seeing this video (and his quote!) I just want to do it! Great tutorial!
This project cost me $84 total to complete a 10ft. wall!
Hi what's name of this paint
mindful grey by SW
Perfect! Thank you so much!
What size mdf boards are those?? Thank you
A 1×4 @ 8ft or 12ft and a 1x2 @ 8ft or 12ft! I have the full material list and tutorial on my blog: angelamariemade.com/diy-board-and-batten-wall/

great video. easy to follow! Doing our first baby's nursery :)
Yesss, love to hear this!! Thank you!
I found that when doing the 1x2 with that exact ryobi nailer that it’s so awkward to angle right and every single last nail did not go deep enough. Does you guys have any advice for me for next time? I want to do my entry way too
I have experienced this happening. First, a good pair of pliers to pull out the nails and a nail setter for popping the nails in if they are just sticking out a little bit are great tools to have on hand. You should be able to still drive the nails at an angle thats not straight 90, it takes some practice. There is also an adjustment on the nailer that you can turn to make the nails go in deeper that would help as well.
Is removing the original baseboard a must? Or do you think this could be done on an existing baseboard?
We removed and replaced the existing baseboard (which was less than 1/4″ thick at the top) so that the battens (vertical boards) would line up perfectly and not have any weird overhang. If you have baseboards like us that are thinner than the molding being used, you can technically cut the battens with a mitered angle at the bottom if you don’t want to remove the original baseboard. But, it doesn’t look as nice or professional in my opinion as baseboards that are the same thickness as the vertical batten boards. That’s why we replaced our baseboard with the same style boards as the rest of the board and batten pieces.
I love it and want it! Blessings
Is there a way to do this without a brad nailer? Can you drill in screws instead or simply hammer in the nails? Thanks!
You can but keep in mind the wall material that you are going into, if it's drywall and you are using screws you will need to find studs or use wall anchors.
Thanks for the educational and inspiring video. H ope to tackle this project soon at our lake cottage.
You can do it! :)
Just watched your video and I love this idea I wanted to do it in my living room on the wall that has the fireplace and I’m just trying to figure out how would I space it out.
Thanks! Hope my spacing explanation was helpful!
Angela Marie Made extremely helpful.
Hi 🙋♀️ what color and brand are you floors . I love them and the bead board thx
Thanks!! The flooring is Pergo Outlast Vienna Oak color, I have a post on it here:angelamariemade.com/pergo-outlast-review/
What if my baseboard are already squared like the ones shown in this video? Do I still need to remove them?
You do not need to remove them but if the thickness is different it may not look as good so I would check that out. Hopefully it's not an issue and you can save a few bucks and time!!
It looks great! Can anyone tell me the purpose of using the construction adhesive *and* nails?
Thank you and great question! The construction adhesive is used because you won't be able to drill all the boards into studs and the nails help keep them in place so that the adhesive can set.
Looks great!
So you also coloured the skirting and door the same colour too?
Yes! It brought everything together!
hi! I was wondering can I use a Palochina wood? If Yes,can it stick to the pure cement wall without drilling? I'm thinking of using a glue for wood to concrete.
I'm not familiar with that type of wood, but I would guess that if you had the right type of adhesive it would probably work. I would test it out on an area and see before doing the entire wall.
How much paint did you use, did you need a full gallon or would a quart be enough?
We had a gallon that we had used before, but a quart would have worked with our dimensions.
did you have to strategically place the vertical batten where the studs in the wall are?
No, we used liquid nails and a brad nailer to secure them to the drywall. You do want to try and take into consideration where the outlets are so that you do not block those.
WOW!!!!! Looks awesome.
Can u tell me what colour is on the wall?
Thank you! It's mindful gray by Sherwin Williams
Lovely job but less of the WE !
Can you put your base board and then the battens? And the put the other baseboard on top of the battens when done?
Yes, and you can leave the 1x2 ledge off if that's what you want to do as well!
What brand of Brad nailer and miter saw do you use? Love the wall.
Thank you!!! I use a ryobi brad nailer and miter saw and I have a larger Hitachi miter saw as well for larger cuts.
What’s the point, what function does it serve?
It is just decorative!
I am in the process of doing a Board and Batten project for a customer. As a handyman, I know that studs do not always fall 16" on center as they normally do. As you move across the walls often the last or first or studs near outlets and door openings will not line up as desired for equally spacing the verticle boards. It seems to me that using a liquid nail adhesive is required to hold the boards in place Angle nailing with a brad or finish nail gun will help to hold the boards in place while needing a lot of spackle and sanding. I think that using adhesive and a few nails might be best. Has anyone who has done this have any suggestions from experience?
Yes, one of the main challenges is not having the correct spacing but it is easily remedied with using liquid nails and a few nails.
Why didnt you spackle the wall imperfections shown at 6:15
Looks like we just missed it, thanks for pointing that out!
Looks great, does your wall have texture?
Thank you, there is no texture on my walls, fortunately.
Thanks for the video!
Very well explained ! Thank you.
Thank you!
did you consider painting the quarter round grey as well versus leaving is white? it looks great but i was just wondering.
thanks, we did consider leaving it white but thought it didn't look as cohesive.
This is an amazing tutorial! Are your walls textured? If not, what do you recommend for people with textured walls?
Thanks so much! My walls were not textured, but depending on the material of the wall if it is stucco or plaster you may not be able to easily put brad nails in so I would recommend using an extra strength adhesive that works with masonry or plaster.
Hey Erin, yuka boards found at Home Depot serve as great backing for a smooth finish on walls that are textures if you aren’t looking to skim coat the wall.
Did you use the same paint for both wall and wood?
Yes
Hi! for the vertical boards, do the brad nails hold in the drywall OK? If they're 9 inches apart they can't all be going into studs, right?
That's correct, but with liquid nails and brad nails they hold up great.
@@AngelaMarieMade Thanks! Will hopefully be tackling this project this weekend.
Great video! So to clarify - not all the brad nails are going into studs (some are just going through plaster/drywall?) Thanks!
What a great explanation of this wall accent. I want to do this all around my powder room and on an accent wall in the bedroom.
Go for it! That sounds beautiful!
Can you please share to dimensions of the wood thanks
the width of the 1x4's is 3.5" and 3/4" thick and the 1x2's are 1.5" wide and 3/4" thick. I have the full cut list on my blog here: angelamariemade.com/diy-board-and-batten-wall/
Looking good girl!!!
great job, how many 4x8's did you use?
I have the full material list in my blog post! I did not use any 4x's in this project. angelamariemade.com/diy-board-and-batten-wall/
I mean 1x4’s. On your site it doesn’t say how many you bought. It just says 1x4. Does that mean you only bought one?
Yes I bought one 1x4 at 12ft and cut it to size! Our wall was 10ft long.
Nah
We chose this paint based on your video. When we begin to paint, the paint appeared beige. Did this happen to you guys as well?
The Mindful Gray (Sherwin Williams) paint color was a bit lighter during the painting process but it dried darker and mostly gray like the photo/video shows. Did your paint end up drying darker as well?
Angela Marie Made it actually did and looks beautiful ❤️ Thanks for the great recommendation!
Those gaps tho
Thank you so much! I can’t wait to try this project
Awesome, thank you!!
Thank you so much!!!!!! This was the best tutorial I’ve seen!
You are so welcome!
Nice job!
What gauge nailer did you use.
18 gauge
What color is this?
Mindful Gray by Sherwin Williams in eggshell
❤
Looks great! I always see people using adhesive on the back. Is this really necessary? We have lived in our house for over 30 years now and all of the projects we did we never used adhesives. Will removing this (down the road) cause damage to the walls? I haven't used it so this is why I am asking...
Thank you! You can get away with doing it without adhesive mostly because the boards are not supporting anything but it is a good practice to use to ensure they will not come off the wall. Removing the boards with adhesive will cause minimal damage to drywall and can be time consuming to remove because you need to sand and scrape the residue off of the drywall and will require some light drywall repair in most cases.
great video!
Thank you!
😎Nice work!
Thank you so much!
Great job, guys. It looks fab.
Thank you very much!
Great job
Great calculation
Thank you very much!
Well done
Thank you!
Gorgeous
Thank you!
Well done...
Thank you!
Looks great!
thank you!
Looks amazing!
Thank you😀
Straight forward and looks great.
Thank you!
Hi Angela. I have been doing some research on board and batten because I am very interested in doing this as an accent wall in my guest room. I’ve watched several videos and noticed some use 1x3 boards for the batten and some use 1x4. Id like to use 1x2 boards for the batten. I’m thinking 1x3 for the top board, 1x5 for the baseboard and 1x2 for the batten boards. Thoughts?
I really like that you are exploring different methods and trying to find a look that fits best for you. I think the best way for you to tell is layout the boards against the wall and see what you think, the 1x2's may look too small but it could also look really good. Thanks for reaching out!
The materials list links to the radius edge MDF but in this video it looks like you were using square edges. If you did use the radius edges how did you deal with the joints between your horizontal and vertical battens since the horizontals would be rounded?
We used square edges, I think the picture that Lowe's is using looks like they are radius edged but in the description it says they are square on all 4 sides. If you did have radius edges you could probably use a spackle between the horizontal and vertical boards.
This looks great ! So for this you needed (2) 1x4 and (1) 1x2?
So all together you needed about 34ft of 1X4 ? Forgive me I’m a super newbie to diy :)
Thank you! Yes you do need both 1x4 and 1x2 boards but the quantity you need depends on the length of the wall. I have a more detailed material list and how to on my blog at: angelamariemade.com/diy-board-and-batten-wall/
Sexiest voice EVER! Great tutorial too. Keep coming back to your project to follow steps. Caulking now.
Didn't even putty fill between the boards? Wow why do it if you aren't even going to do it right?
