RUSH - Hemispheres Live November 20, 1978, Tucson, Arizona.

- The 20 minute long, technical masterpiece known as Cygnus X-1 Book 2: Hemispheres. This very live recording is almost exact compared to the original, Geddy screaming away on vocals at points, to a much more mellow acoustic ballad feel towards the end. It makes my top 20 list of Rush songs easily, maybe even top 10. Alex is using a chorus pedal, not to mention Neil, who is Albert Einstein on drums. Hemispheres was released on the album of the same name in 1978, part one being even more chaotic, released in 1977...Just figured I’d upload this.
*Recorded in Tucson, Arizona, November 20th 1978.

Hemisphere's is my fav Rush Album. Cygnus X-1 Book 2: Hemispheres is nothing but a masterpiece.
Mine too. And Nov 20 is my birthday
Same here,my all time favourite💯👍🏻
BEST RUSH ALBUM EVER ..(though many great ones to follow afterwards!)
Hemispheres was my first Rush album and they came to town that year .I didn't know about 2112 , Xanadu or working man until that point so i kept buying each album until i caught up . WOW !!!
I like hemispheres and Signals and Counterparts and 2112 as my top 4 😮😅🎉🎉😢 ,but that's just me😮🎉😂❤
So love old RUSH. These guys were in the 20's and leading the way, only a few of us knew it...
People today may not realize that this was smack in the middle of disco, introduction of punk rock, Elvis just dies a year earlier, music was SOOooo diverse. You could put on AM radio (no FM really) and hear Gary Numan, Earth Wind and Fire, The Cars, and so on.
Err... I remember listening to FM stations at the time. They were on the verge of overtaking AM who just couldn't compete with FM stereo broadcasts for music, so most of them moved to talk-show format.
Or even into the early 1990s, you could put it onto the early band or the 88FMto 91FM range and hear some college radio station play The Sex Pistols, The Pixies, or The Stooges.
It's still happening to some level on FM radio... It's just not as cool as they used to be (in Phoenix, my adopted hometown of 20 years..nor in DC... MY ORIGINAL HOMETOWN... Had to listen to radio from Baltimore 40 miles away just to get good radio airwaves back in those days!)
I liked a lot of that stuff. But I also liked (loved) Rush! 😊
The 1st time I heard this album (particularly this song) something shifted in my soul (that has never shifted back) - and that's a good thing
Are you my twin?
This period of Rush they were just getting better by leaps and bounds with every album.
❤
Hemispheres...just AN ABSOLUTE MUSICAL MASTERPIECE!!!🎓
I can't believe how good the audio quality is. I can distinguish all the instruments and nuances.
Agreed it's pretty good considering this is a bootleg-type snippet. Imagine how good it must've sounded for the audience there all those decades ago. Exceptionally good SQ is one of the reasons Rush shows were so popular.
I saw this show December 17th London Ontario, wireless opened up for them…I was 12, the first of many awesome concerts I’ve attended. This made a huge impression on me. Alex Lifeson was my hero!
@@stratcaptain66 Great! My 1st time seeing them was pretty much a bitter sweet day. it was September the 25th, 1980 Philadelphia, spectrum unfortunately this was the same day John Bonham died. It was considered the moving pictures warm up tou. It was absolutely fantastic, I'll never forget it. Four years later GUP tour at same venue I met all three got there got autographs on my tour book. This all occurred behind th stage near two limos, also called "the pit". It was one of greatest moments of my life.
I agree 💯
Testify, Martin.L
The '78 Tucson show is one of the best Rush bootlegs out there. Not just the sound quality, but the dialogue between Geddy and crowd is crazy ("do you understand English? MOVE BACK!")
My first Rush concert eas the Permanent waves tour anc they played Hemispheres on that tour with all their brst during this time. 7 rows back at the Capitol Center 💥
Unbelievable night with the doublenecks rockin the night!
Seen Rush 25 times and the first concert was the best in 78.
Permanent Waves was my first tour too, so I guess I must have seen Hemispheres but can’t really remember the details. So nice to catch up here. 😊
...some of the most unique..sophisticated...idiosyncratic...rhythm guitar in Rock History 🤘🤘🤘
Agreed. The critics hated Rush. That made us Rush fans love the music even more. Rush was different, not everybody got it, but we did. I saw them on the hemispheres tour Sam Houston coliseum, Houston TX. Sounded much tighter than much long❤ much
I wish I’d seen this tour. From descriptions it seemed really cool. My first tour was Permanent Waves.
Anyway I can only listen to a few minutes right now. Off out. 😊
And this is why the album Hempisheres played on my turntable the most.
"they battled through the ages but still neither force would yield". F$! Yeah!
We can walk our road together
If our goals are all the same
We can run alone and free
If we pursue a different aim
Let the truth of Love be lighted
Let the love of truth shine clear
Sensibility
Armed with sense and liberty
With the Heart and Mind united
In a single perfect sphere
always will be brilliant.
Yes had Close To The Edge, Rush had Hemispheres. Just as epic!
Yep. And Genesis had Supper's Ready.
@@mikereiss4216 Heck yeah!
And ELP had Tarkus.
It was amazing as a kid in the 70's watch Rush progress through those first 5 albums. I'm so fortunate to grow up with Rush
Hemispheres was the perfect prelude to Permanent Waves. Geddy and Neil were totally locked in. You hear of people knowing each other so well, they can finish each others sentences? Well, Geddy could finish Neils fills. On the friggen bass guitar. It always blew my mind how he knew what notes to use. This album is so "Rush". They found their groove for sure. But this album almost burned them out though. But it did set them up perfectly to do Permanent Waves.
Saw the Hemispheres tour in 1979 at the Milwaukee arena. We originally had 30th row tickets, but a friend, who had 4th row center tickets, wasn't sure he could go, so he swapped tickets with us!
Fantastic!
Fantastic! Seems the studio record!!! Here, they played so perfect!!!!
I cannot believe the quality of what you've uploaded to RUclips! I am making a transition to something better in my life... And I was holding back tears as a 49yr old man reliving the good old days. Thank you, SO MUCH!
I’m glad you enjoyed it!!
17 year old rush enjoyer here, boy what i would do to be able to live in those times to see rush live in their prime.
Just love stumbling on to a classic RUSH concert!
Could you imagine seeing this on television in the UK?
When 2112 came out, I thought there is no way Rush can eclipse this album. Hemispheres changed that on the first listen. It a masterpiece on level with Close to the Edge and Foxtrot. Those 3 are my must have desert island albums. Thanks for the upload. Superb audio quality!
No problem! Yeah, the band would have probably been thinking “How are we going to make an album better than this” LOL. Anyways, thanks for watching and have a good day.
Hemispheres is technically superior to 2112, but the latter is more iconic and was of course career defining and a statement at the time.
Hemispheres was my first of many Rush concerts. Saw them first in Providence back in April of 79. This recording is fantastic!
Literally music of the gods. Those Alex Lifeson chords, that Geddy Lee bass line, The Professor (RIP) are you kidding?
My first concert ever was the Hemispheres concert in Saginaw Michigan, early 1979. I was like, how can this sound like the studio?
The absolute highest pinnacle of Rush.
That's crazy man. I'm 17 and I've lived in Saginaw my whole life and in my lifetime it's insane to imagine a band as big as Rush (even then) coming here. I know Cheap Trick came earlier last year and they're excellent too but usually I have to go to Pine Knob in Detroit to see any decent bands.
Neil's second set of Slingerland drums are one of his best sounding kits
Just plain freaking amazing.
i didn`t discover Rush until 1979.
About the same time for me. So Permanent Waves was the first new studio album after discovery. I bought that on release and then every studio album on release until Clockwork Angels.
This is one of my favorite rush songs. I had no idea that this version even excited. Thanks so much for sharing.
You’re welcome!! Another channel uploaded the FULL BOOTLEG, link is in the description if you’re interested. One of my favourites as well.
I know all the words --- I sing along with ( smile)
Lower register of course 😊
First Rush gig was on the Farewell to Kings tour after listening to All the worlds a stage. Saw them at least once every time they came over to the UK after that. The death of Neil Peart was a tragedy as is the fact that there will be no more new music.
I was fine with their being no more new music but I would still have liked to have had Neil around popping up every now and then talking about the industry etc. Though perhaps he may not have done.
Ma toune préférée de Rush!
Yep! It's the definitive Rush song!!
Beyond awesome, thank you.
I saw this show two weeks later in Montreal. It was my first RUSH show. Awesome!
You are very lucky!!
I’ve never seen any video of Neil smashing his gong at the end of Hemispheres...... It must have been quite a sight. Most beautiful drum kit ever assembled.
Max Webster for opening , i was they're . Fantastic evening at Montréal Forum
@@raymondsenecal8943 No, Max was the year before (and a few years later). That show was opened by a band called Wireless.
@@robburgess4556 you have have a good memory the ticket was 4.99 if i remember, i was at
This was the first time I saw RUSH live in St Louis MO
Awesome!! Thanks for sharing this.
I miss RUSH so much.
Awesome. This is my favorite Rush piece.
I'm a drummer, and a huge Rush fan. I saw them on this tour, and saw them play this whole suite. I remember thinking at the time that Geddy's vocals didn't sound like they did on the album - close, but not the same. That was the last time they played this in its entirety on tour. I think that Ged's voice had already started changing, perhaps between Farewell To Kings and Hemispheres. That may have been why he had such difficulty with the vocals during recording. Plus, this song is in a weird key.
The musicianship on this album is stratospheric! This has to be from a board. No audience sounds whatsoever. Amazing capture of musical history especially for Rush fans. 🫡✊
Thanks for this!!!
No problem!
Thank you.
Saw this show in Chicago, Comiskey Park. Still one of the best shows of my life. Someone tossed a frisbee and Geddy picked it up and threw it back out, I jumped and caught it but got mobbed-I still have it, dried mud and all. They were already playing a couple of songs from Permanent Waves, Spirit Of Radio and Freewill I think. Would like to see the setlist from that show. R40 was also a great show, my 2 favorites.
I need to see a video of this!!!
thank you
No problem!
I still thinks it's sounds great and very challenging song --- this recording is beautifulI I still listen to this all the time
An experiment you play this to somebody who has never heard of rush knows nothing about them and ask them how many people are in this band and they will probably say 4 or 5 when you tell them 3 they wont believe it
Love this song/album! I do wish I could have seen this tour but I joined the party about five years too late. One of the older kids in my neighborhood who was, in part responsible for introducing me to the band never stopped talking about seeing them at the Paladium in NYC in ‘79. Wish I had a time machine 😉
AWESOME !!! 1st time ever hearing this and it sounds fantastic. Thanks so much! ☮
Agreed. Thanks for watching and have a good day!!
Listen to Caress of Steel
@@gabeeaglesland1378 I've always said if Caress came out AFTER 2112, A farewell to Kings, and Hemispheres it would have been a huge hit. But of course the irony is it had to come first and fail miserably or we would never have gotten 2112 and the rest
@@GM-MarkOfExcellence By fail miserably, do you mean in LP sales or just the plain fact that many or most people don’t know about it and or never heard it played?
@@gabeeaglesland1378 Sales and their concerts were to smaller and smaller audiences until they were playing in backwater bars to 20 people. Rush themselves were calling it the "Down the Tubes Tour" . They literally thought they were done.
Saw Atlanta, GA....on this one THE FOX..... THEATER....one of the best if not the best place to see a concert......then saw again on this tour in Columbia, S.C......at the TOWNSHIP AUTOTURIUM
Thanks to you, this is very fresh. On spot old boy. Chiraq loves RUSH. 😎
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching!!
This is 21st century orchestral music.
Great find. high energy rip of Hemispheres classic track. Sounds like the board audio, just assuming. Loving Lifeson in your face/ears/mind. Thanks Rush, RIP NP.
Man I wish there was video of this!
I do too.
I was looking for that live ! Thank you very much ! Now, i must learn this song on guitar but its soooo hard x’(
Yeah I know lol…thanks for watching!
Love this album....
Saw them on this tour. Lucky ME!!!
Epic!
Very fresh indeed. Much tighter and cleaner sound that my copy! Thank you!
I didn’t really do anything to the audio Lol. @Snowdog is the channel I found this concert from. The whole concert sounds very good, I just separated this song from the concert. The link can be found in the description. Thanks for your support though!
@@bands_uncovered8347 Ahh yes. He or She has the best stuff. Well, great post!
This video ( audio ) sounds great thru my little phone thru blue tooth speakers . Sounds great ‼️👍
I agree, Link to the full concert is in the description. Thanks for watching!!
That song really took a toll on Geddys long term voice. You could hear he was trying to dial it down as much as he could.
As soon as I heard Permanent Waves I could tell the register had dropped. But it suited the new direction.
Every soul a battlefield
This should probably be the start of the Hemispheres tour.
They look rested, energetic and playing very well, same as the album, as @Bands_Uncovered said.
I've heard other recordings of this track where there are oscillations.
Getty Lee learns the keyboard!!😎
The only thing better than this recording would be video of it as well.
If I had one Rush album to listen to, this would be it. Although at some point any album between 2112 and Power Windows has been a favorite. But it's easy to see why Rush went to tighter compositions and jumped into shorter form music in Permanent Waves. This is just too freakin' hard. And Ged was really stretched vocally. You can tell from the open. But it is glorious...
I saw this tour in Indianapolis November of 78. UFO opened for them.
In a perfect alternate parallel universe, there exists tons of film/video footage for all of the RUSH tours, including this one. Too bad we're living in this less fortunate version of it. Dang it! Oh, and thanks for uploading this sweet audio bootleg. Cheers!
No problem!! If you’re looking for video, there is a channel called Stickhits that remasters Rush footage. One of my dreams is to hear some of their completely unreleased tracks.
@@bands_uncovered8347 Thanks, I'm actually familiar with that channel, and it's got some cool RUSH remasters up there, but nothing earlier than the Moving Pictures concert release. What I wish is that there were concert films available from the RUSH archives from earlier tours, which there really isn't, besides a couple songs from Don Kershner's rock concert. My first tour was Permanent Waves, and to see that tour on film or Hemispheres would be a true gift from Cygnus himself. 😉
@@bands_uncovered8347 I do appreciate that, but, yep, see it, been there. Been a RUSH fan since '77, and from what I gather, besides a couple of things like that that have already been released, there's again very little concert footage available. Lots of audio bootlegs, but what few film/video releases are far and few in between. Thanks.
@@stewiedarkinvisibleid For sure. I definitely agree. We need more footage from that era, but Sorry to suggest so many things at once.
@@bands_uncovered8347 Hey, no worries, man, you're just trying to help, and it's much appreciated. Us RUSH fans gotta stick together. 😉
Generally I feel that people prefer 2112 to Cygnus Book II, but I think that this piece has a coherence that the other doesn't have.
storm over tucson
The ultimate Triumvirate!
2022!
How on earth did you get the audio so well cleaned up?! I've listened to several versions of this recording and none are this good, especially the bass tone.
Well, I’d have to Thank the person who uploaded the first concert (Link in Description) because I agree, the entire concert sounds phenomenal. I’m not sure whether that’s the way it was recorded or if someone cleaned it up.
DECEMBER 19, 1978 LONDON, ONTARIO LONDON GARDERNS I was there❤
Lucky!
@@bands_uncovered8347 Caught the last show in Toronto R-40 tour. So grateful cause we lost Neil after that
Thank you for this! My copy of Storm Over Tucson cuts out right before “My Rocinante sailed by night”, but this one’s complete. Proof that the source material exists. I don’t get it. But a huge thank you!🙏
If you’re interested, the full bootleg can be found here - ruclips.net/video/r7d2NyzhIAM/видео.htmlsi=e-FDQEreFCqNfOOS
@@bands_uncovered8347 That’s actually the one I have. That link also cuts off at that same place. Scroll forward in that video and you’ll hear it. There’s like 40 seconds of the song missing.
Which begs the question, where did the audio of Hemispheres come from? It’s not from the whole Storm Over Tucson that you just sent. You must have two different sources.
Scroll to 1:00:05 on the link you posted of Storm Over Tucson and listen. “Some who did not fight brought tales of old to light” and then it fades out, just like mine. Your Hemispheres video does not. It’s perfect. Anyway I really do appreciate having a complete version, which I’m going to rip from RUclips and stick as an mp4 into my Storm Over Tucson files.😄👍🏻✌️
@@Major7Melodious Oh, maybe I sent you a link to the wrong video. Anyways, I’m glad you enjoyed!
Alex using a Roland GR500 Synth guitar. Only tour he used it if I am thinking correctly.
Another amazing performance. Just wondering if there's any live recording of side 1 of 2112?
The full version or just simply a live version? They played all of side one in 1996 I believe, but imo the best live version is All The Worlds A Stage.
At 9:53 the original recording skips about 1 minute and a half. This was corrected by using another soundboard show and used that as a patch to cover the skip. Does anyone know what show that's from?
Every bootleg of this tour geddy is struggling to sing this song. Flat a lot, voice sounds very tired. This song was written outside of his comfort zone. Easy to understand why they ran away from this into simpler stuff like permanent waves. Trying to sing this every night just wasnt sustainable.
This is a great example of why rush was never a big drug band there is no way in hell you could play this complex monster all blowed out on coke
That's what we have thought for years, but not so according to Geddy in his book, seems they are human after all
I definitely would have went but I was only 2 wtf 😂
What happens at 9:55?
Correct date for this show is November 20, 1978, not November 11.
Ty for the info!
My first Rush concert, the Tour of the Hemispheres, Feb.3rd,1979,the Richfield Coliseum. Never missed them after that. When they released Moving Pictures, I actually thought they were a deity.
geddy is singing a bit flat right?
Just needed some delay on the much with a touch of reverb. Gives the voice a little more "hang time" as we called in the 80's when I need sound/ lights for club bands.
They barely move in this video.
Bad setlist !
So incredible!
