The reason why the IMX 811 is 3:2 and not 4:3 is that it is a rolling shutter sensor, and making it flatter enables the sensor to improve on its readout speed - so it can produce higher frame rate, which is important in certain industrial applications where overlapping images are captured anyways (for example aerial mapping), so it doesn't really matter what is the aspect ratio of the sensor. And Criss was right, the first IMX 461 based camera was the Phase One iXM 100 unmanned aerial (aka drone) camera. It was released much sooner than the FF, and H consumer cameras, as they were struggling with overheating.

Please can you cover the RICOH GR III HDF on the next episode, I'd love to know your thoughts on adding a niche filter to a 5 year old camera and saying its a new camera. Leica can do a Fujifilm:
Step 1 - fail to compete outside of your niche with fullframe frontrunners, in terms of AF and specs that matter, while abandoning the core benefits of your niche.
Step 2 - Specialise in emergent tech you can't properly support due to a lack of investment in fundamentals such as AF and IBIS. These might be BSI/Stacked/High MP/Monochrome/X-trans/organic sensors.
Step 3 - Jump into Medium Format, because what is mediocre in full frame is groundbreaking in larger formats.
Step 4 - Cash in as fast as possible before the big boys come over to medium format with their solid tech and step on you again.
Step 5 - Never invest in a software/product department that could produce competitive AF algorithms, robust stabilisation systems, cleaner low light performance, or quality UX. Also, if anyone suggests your cameras should be compact: Fire them.

Anytime the question of "who needs all that resolution" comes up, the answer is Defense. Research and Industrial too, but the army would love to slap a 10000MP sensor on a drone for reconnaissance and target identification. That aside - I'll admit that my GX85 puts out JPEGs I'm very happy with as viewed-as-a-whole static 'images', but part of the joy of photography for me is exploring and reliving a scene through detail resolution. I like zooming in to 150% and looking around the image to see something I witnessed in real life in 'larger than life' detail, so I'll always take more resolution to enable that viewing experience.

Have an SL3 about a week, sold my SL2. Quite happy. The body fits my hands well, love the grip and interface (no contest other than Hasselblad). Leica lenses (6), yeah, expensive, but they do have a 'look' in about 30 ~ 40% of images that I never could get with my Canon, Nikon, Sony. Disclaimer: my experience with the others is now 4 to 8 years old, and I'm sure times have changed. Unlike the world, I have zero interest in video, so I can't speak to that- I'll take Jordan at his word. Only downside of the SL3- even though it's not that much smaller or lighter than the SL2- is I no longer feel I could beat away a bear with the body. That could go either way. Again, quite happy, although my bank account is moaning.

Concerning Peter's travel photography question. With all the travel he has planned, it's inevitable that he will miss a lot. That being said, with all the travel he'll be doing he won't be able to help but see wonderful things to photograph just by being curious about "What's down this road?" It is simply impossible to see everything of interest in the SW (or the American West in general) even over a period of months. So don't sweat it. But if you want to see what's here or there, click on place names on Google Maps, then look at the photos that people have taken at that location. You won't see a lot of great (or even good) photography, but it will give you an idea of what an area looks like and whether or not it's worth your while to explore.

I am late to the party here, but regarding Leica FF cameras: I think Leica could still develop a "Leica" style with the SL line. But it would have to be opposite of what they currently have. It seems like up until the SL3 they were leaning toward the feel of a mirrorless S camera. The camera is large, the lenses are really really large. What I would like to see them do is go in the opposite direction. A slimmed down SL with a bit more classic SLR touches and a set of small lenses to go along with it. Some Leica skinned Sigma Contemporary lenses would really work. They could even re-imagine a CL rangefinder style FF version as well.

I'd love to see a video, or at least hear some thoughts on this subject: there is a small, but vocal minority of OM system wildlife shooters who claim that the 40-150 2.8 pro, coupled with the 2x teleconverter, is not just a niche setup, but so good it has become their everyday setup, and outperforms most other options with similar focal range (such as the 75-300 II.) I am, to put it mildly, a bit skeptical, and would love to see a more objective test of that combo, as well as some general thoughts on if teleconverters still deserve the bad rap they've inherited from older models.

Shutter rating means that camera was tested for such amount of actuations to still have exactly corect timings. Not that it will die when lets say 200k is reached. Clean camera with properly lubricated mechanism can easily do even 2-3 millions of shutter clicks. But at the end 1/8000s might actually be around 1/5000s.
And if camera inside is dirty especially full of fine sand from beaches or animal fur, it dramatically shortens shutter or mirror mechanism life expectancy. Salt environment also. So if your camera is daily shooting at beach with you frequently changing lenses etc, it easily can die before reaching 50k clicks.

What hurts them is their own schemes like taking the sigma 100-400 and just selling it for way more money in a different housing.

I am surprised by the answer about the 40 Mpx APS-C vs the 40 Mpx FF. This answer will lead to disppointments. With the APS-C you will lose 1 stop dynamic range and noise but the main point are the lenses . 40 Mpx APS-C has the pixel density of 98 Mpx FF. Most of the APS-C current lenses won’t take advantage of this sensor while 42/45 Mpx FF is still a very good sensor for a vast majority of the modern FF lenses.
Taking in account the potential of the current lenses , to get the maximum of them the sweet spot is 24/26 Mpx in APS-C and 42/50 Mpx in FF.
Regarding the DOF, keep in mind that one stop difference due to the focal lengths will lead you to a buy a 32mm f1.2 for your APS-C instead of a 50mm f1.8. Are you going to save money ?

Very skeptical about claims of high megapixel count sensors when flagged for use in industrial applications-- Chances are that it's designed for a single wavelength of light, instead of having to have three pixels for each color. Effectively allows you to say that you've got the 3x resolution, only though it sees in just one wavelength of light.

With a standby mode, afforded by the new on/off button, there will be a lot of unique capabilities afforded to it in conjunction with the mobile app. Lastly, the OS, IP54 weather resistance, and use of M lenses set the SL3 apart from other full-framed bodies.

Fujifilm X100 VI in the UK is on a lottery, you need to have signed up to their mailing list then enter the lottery... However, the unfair part is if you win, you have to go to the Fuji House of Photography in London and collect the camera and pay for it in person. If I was to win... I got a £300+ Rail fair to get there... Not really a fair option to the rest of the UK that live outside of London.
They could of worked with an authorised reseller to check your id or whatever and collect from somewhere local to you (so you can visit your local camera shop to collect)

    Why is Leica surprised?
They are known to do their niche thing well, and be the go to source if you want that specific thing. Jumping into doing exactly what everyone else already does, but slightly worse seems like it would obviously not sell as well.
    I wouldn't buy a Ferrari smartphone.
Although, I'd assumed this would be the case for Fujifilm too. Which is why the X100 is selling like crazy but the X-H sits terminally in stock. 😂

Currently, medium format sensors are used applications such as QA inspection of products like flat panels, PCBs and solar panels, for security surveillance, for UAVs and aerial mapping, and a specific model is used for astronomy.

Totally disagree! Leica is making expensive cameras for discerning customers, not for average buyers (they’ve tried making more affordable cameras, but those have been forgotten failures). Leica’s “luxury” status depends on its premium price. Rolls Royce does not want everyone to be driving their cars, that’s what a Toyota is for.

  • @camillebrenes

Leica L series have never appealed to a wide audience because hardly anyone thinks of Leica as another "me too" mirrorless company. They did better and more unique things. And they are bastardizing the M series by making them like mirrorless cameras. Next thing you know they will get rid of the actual rangefinder and replace it with an EVF and simulated RF patch.
They need to make an M that's more affordable, back to basics, a really nice sensor but no live view or video, price it at $3,500.00. I'm afraid the company has been losing its identity for years.
Sony are a tech company, it's all they know. Their cameras take all the fun out of photography. A 247mp sensor has very specific application (my way of saying, what a stupid idea), especially with the advent of multi-shot hi res modes becoming much more popular.

Want that sencor that can be connected to Ipad or tablet with with a medium format mount , dont need any brand on it. Noo need for fancy settings. Connected to M.2 X16 Gen 4 memory. So all settings can be controlled through different apps. That could be a nice future.

    • @-grey
      @-grey 4 месяца назад +1

I have seen the comparison photos too.
To be fair, X-trans will always be a little more mushy looking than Bayer. That's the nature of the filmic style they want. Also, the pulled highlights in Fujifilm jpegs reduce micro contrast in general which appears as a perceived loss of sharpness. It might have nothing to do with the lens or sensor. Even though the X100 is generally known for being a bit soft up close.
That said: As someone who has both Fujifilm and Ricoh, I think anyone looking between the two should go buy Fujifilm cameras instead. Ricoh isn't for everyone.
      ✌️

@@-greyI don’t hate Ricoh. If they ever come out with a GR IV I’ll check it out. They’re definitely smaller with a good sensor. I’ve just noticed a lot of hate directed at the new Fuji camera. I get it but it’s still annoying.

    • @-grey
      @-grey 4 месяца назад +3

@@dccoletrain The hate has been going in floods the other way for many years. Our community over in Fuji land are notorious for having the religious evangelical intensity of ISIS. I mean even GxAce, who is super impartial and usually loves good design thinking, spat that it was an ugly little piece of shit in a video recently. It was bizarre. 😂
This is really the first clapback I've seen coming from the Ricoh community. And it's a very gentle poke at the irony of the suboptimised high megapixel sensor trend mostly. They're usually the quietest ones. It's why there's more negative things said about the GR than positive. The community rarely speaks up about what they like about it, because it's something you either get or don't. Plus, most of the users are older, long-time, fine art, documentary, and street photographers who aren't really on Instagram or RUclips.
Besides, the X100VI is hardly soft. It's just not perfectly optimised, which is so negligible for 99% of use cases the X100VI is designed for that it would be unnoticeable. The XF23f1.4 II still exists if you want.

    • @TheChosenOne_
      @TheChosenOne_ 4 месяца назад +1

I don’t think anybody said the X100 is soft, just that the Ricoh is sharper with less MP. And that the cause is the X-Trans sensor and that it’s even intentional for „filmic“ reasons is just next level cope. Why would they increase the resolution to 40MP then?
I don’t think anybody buys either for their sharpness but for their many other qualities.
