Yesterday, Sony added two more cameras to its line of interchangeable cameras which brought the line to no less than 18 total choices from entry-level through professional. That is just too many.
Sony has made it a company policy to discontinue camera bodies and lenses as infrequently as possible, which has the advantage of giving buyers more choice when it comes to determining how to spend their money. Continuing to sell the Sony a7 II, for example, even though there a7 IV is the most recent addition to that section of the line allows a photographer to decide to spend less on a camera if they don’t think they need as many features.
But on the flip side, it results in a camera line that has an amorphous beginning and end. Seeing so many choices ends up becoming more of a detriment than a benefit. In this week’s PetaPixel Podcast, Chris, Jordan, and Jaron talk about this problem and do their best to point out how difficult it has become to recommend a specific camera for a specific use case given the bloated nature of Sony’s camera line.
Additionally, the trio talks about the latest news including the booming popularity of Ricoh’s GR III and a new lens patent from Canon that is easily the weirdest design they’ve ever seen.
We hope you enjoy the podcast and we look forward to hearing what you think. If you like what you hear, please support us by subscribing, liking, commenting, and reviewing! Yes as an A1, and A7SIII owner, we did get overlooked after the initial purchase for "flagship" cameras for still and video. Sorry I bought them sometimes, when cheaper cameras have some better features. It will be tough to spend this much again just to get what we should have had in firmware updates. Cheers

You made the mistake of assuming that the product you bought would get updates. You should never do that. You are buying what it is on the day you bought it. That's the only guarantee. Everything else is a bonus. You weren't really overlooked. You just got all the things up front.

I get the frustration, but there is a quote from Rene Ritchie here on youtube that I like very much.
Wait as long as you can to buy something, then buy the best you can, and enjoy the heck out of it, because there will always be something newer, better, cheaper and faster.
      That’s the nature of tech.
Also, your A1 and A7SIII didn’t suddenly became bad products because newer stuff came out ✌️

Not sure, do the new cameras offer 1/400 synch speed or non-bending electronic shutter at any speed? To me, such features made me buy A1 for professional use, not some "train-AF" or so. What upgrade would you need by firmware for professional needs?

Panasonic definitely needs to make a new point and shoot. I picked up a cheap used LX10 and have had fun with it, but an updated LX100 series camera would be interesting. Better yet, they should be able to cram a 4/3 sensor easily into a GR sized body and maybe have room for dust/weather sealing.

It didn't sell well and won't. The thing is people stigmatized with small sensor = cheaper, the price isn't competitive enough against the bigger sensor. The dilemma of many choice
Those who know its true value are more likely not a newbie but advanced user that just want something compact. Pair with small flash, you can neglect the sensor size in most scenario

Read me out: This is a Sony effort to improve profitability through cost-cutting and higher pricing. After years of heavy investment in the A full frame line up, they really want their money back and know more people are now heavily invested with several FE lenses.
Frankly speaking, for a newcomer looking into FF, a Panasonic S5ii would be a much more compelling and value-oriented choice. Their compact lenses are also very attractively priced and offering a good selection. Features wise, it’s like suddenly Sony stopped listening to the users/RUclipsrs feedback (old EVF, tiny HDMI, eternally mediocre UI, etc.) for continued improvement/evolution, and now Panasonic is the one paying attention to said feedback and actually implementing it into arguably better cameras that undercut these new models by hundreds.

As if Sony hadn´t been profitable before.....
Like many others, I´m increasingly baffled by the road Sony is taking. They are creating huge overlap in their line up instead of accentuating the respective strength of each camera. Including 8K video in the A7r V for example is as unnecessary as it gets.
It looks increasingly as if Sony is bent on repeating Canon´s mistake by not developing new sensors and re-using one and the same sensor ad nauseam.

Firmware updates is why I stay with Fuji. Outside of film sims, which is more than slightly grating, I always feel like they do a great job of maximize the capabilities of older models and where they stop feels like limitations of a given processor being reached. They have also spoke candidly about film sims however, saying they are expensive to make which is why they are gated. One thing they have mentioned in the past is the possibility of issuing paid firmware for things like film sims. For me I would be okay with that as I know how time consuming it is to develop something like an advanced color profile that works in a number of settings like their film sims do. Say $50 to add nostalgic neg to my x-s10 would be something I would pay for.

100% correct about the GR's popularity trickling down from the Fuji single prime camera hype.
I looked for a portable family camera with a nice coloring. Found the 100v alongside the hype. I didn't care about the pastiche look, I only wanted something really simple that can take high quality photos like my old RX100 mk1 did, but with more vibe to them.
Also it seemed pretty large and intrusicve... so I looked further
After seeing photos of the GRIII and GRIIIx I ordered a GRIIIx instantly and LOVE it. Such a fantastic little camera!
The AF could be better and I'd love to have weather sealing... but it is still 100% what I needed from a pocket powerhouse
The sharpness, vibe, touchscreen, snap focus, Jpeg/raw in camera processing, and the menus are so easy to navigate!
BTW I got so hooked on the Ricoh... I now have a GXR with the M mount which I absolutely love (such a underrated camera)
+ got a beat up GRII for my wife* (basically perfect excuse to play with the old Jpeg processor and 28mm equivalent fixed lens hehe)
SO happy Ricoh is getting recognition for these!

I am working in a camera store, even if it seems to be a problem having so much choice, it's nice to have option for every budget, and having the flexibility to choose a body over another and having money left for lens, not everybody needs eye AF or perfect tracking video performance, when you hit black friday, the a7 ii at around 999$ is a good budget fullframe for landscape or portrait camera. I would not recommand it first hand, but at least the option is still there! Great podcast as always!

Canon with it's closed mount, Sony with lack of firmware updates and Nikon with only the Z8 and Z9 with really good AF. They also lack a lot of lenses like a 24 35 50 and 85 f1.4's , they are killing it on the long end.

I've had the GRIIIx for a year and half and it gets far more play than my A7 IV just because I can take it anywhere. Most of my favorite shots have been from the GR.
The only downside is that Ricoh generally makes these to be throw away as the cost to repair from the only authorized repair shop, Precision Camera, is often only a few hundred less than a new unit. I'm honestly kind of paranoid about how many times I actuate the lens because of this. I often just leave the camera on between shots, but then camera runs hot.

    • @-grey
      @-grey 10 месяцев назад +1

They fixed the unreliable dials a few years back. Since the GRIIIx especially they have improved the loose dials across the board. It is only a possible concern if you're buying second hand now.
Also, with the Nisi filter system you can put a clear filter on and protect the lens from dust.
No flash work around though. 😂
      ✌️

    • @astrostl
      @astrostl 10 месяцев назад

@@-grey good to hear on the dials. For every claim on a sensor dust solution, there is a counter-claim from someone who did it out of the box and still had issues. It's a very persistent problem, even among those with filter tricks (inc. Ricoh).

    • @-grey
      @-grey 10 месяцев назад +2

@@astrostl You do have to be a bit careful still tbf. The superfluous speakers are still a opening inside the camera housing, and small dust will get through the mesh. A bit of tape will help there too. It's not ideal, but you can go along way to keeping it going dust-free.
That's just a trade off for fixed-lens cameras though, none are better or worse than others in that department - the X100 series is the same. I think you only hear about it with the GR more because there's not a lot of big complaints about it in general, so they're all kind of prefaced with "if I had to nitpick something then..." So, I don't think it's a reason to avoid them entirely. The extra UX value they bring to the table after using one far out-weighs the minor negatives for me. I think it's one of the best cameras ever made in terms of design for purpose. However, there isn't a hard hype following or user base for them, GR users are pretty quiet in general. So you only find out a lot of the biggest positives once you've actually owned it for a while.
All that said, I wouldn't snub some weather sealing and a flip up selfie screen in the GRIV though. 😂

I have both the X70 and GRIII. Shot the X70 for years, and upgraded to the GRIII this year. The only thing I miss from the X70 is the flip up selfie screen. It was a nice snap-travel-doc camera, it had all the specs I ever need anyway. That said the GR is probably the most intelligently designed camera I have ever used. They really put some incredible UX considerations into it. It's so good that I feel like they should be designing more important things than pocket cameras. 😂
I love that Sony is bringing us compact form factor options. It's the opposite direction Fujifilm and Canon are going which is why I'm dropping Fujifilm now that my X-T2 is dead. The a7C range is awesome as are the LCD only ZV and FX cameras. Although, I'll probably just get a Z30, because it's good enough for me and my money. I don't need pricey pro features. All I care about is reasonable IQ, AF, compact portability, and some nice compact primes. If I didn't care about money though, I'd have an a7CII and the Zeiss 35f2.8. It's basically the same size as the X100V. ✌️

I really enjoyed this video, especially when Chris said he was contemplating robbing the guy of his X100v, LMAO. Then, a sad reflection of the times, the lack of camera stores across the USA. England in general, and London in particular where I live, used to have lots of camera stores. Over the years far too many of the smaller independent, family-run businesses, have closed. There are still some excellent ones but for the main part we have lost that personal touch, direct help and customer care from an enthusiastic shop owner. Fortunately, the larger groups such as WEX, do still offer great advice but it is not as good as you could get in the past in-shop in a more leisurely way. For me though, in the UK, I would like to give shout-outs for Grays of Westminster for Nikon, and Campkins of Cambridge and Park Cameras for many makes for outstanding service.

I noticed there is a T* marking next to the EVF, that was not there in the a6300. It refers to the Zeiss coating, which is I'm sure just for marketing, but this could mean that the EVF has better optics that makes a difference.

    • @EvanA.
      @EvanA. 10 месяцев назад +16

You have to understand it's all relative. Sony shooters who, after comparing the specifications that matter to them, still want to be in the Sony ecosystem have no camera bodies with much better screens to compare them to and don't feel as much pressure to compare their camera to non-Sony options. Whereas, people on the outside looking in (whether they're prospective Sony shooters or happy users of other systems) are much more likely to be aware of and care about this difference. People weigh their options differently, that should be no surprise. You can't say "get with the times" on this subject because Sony obviously prioritizes other aspects of the camera experience, much like they consistently release the same body ergonomics year after year. I don't think someone should be heavily basing their camera decision on the screen resolution. It's still a 3" screen.

Also yea with a three inch screen you literally can’t tell a difference past 1080p. 3 inches is so small that even at 1080 pixel density is still insanely high.

I would say that if upgrades are important to you, buy a camera from a manufacturer who regularly issues upgrades. But, if you want to buy Sony, just know that upgrades aren't Sony's thing. On the other hand, whenever new hardware is released it will have the latest features and you don't necessarily have to buy the top of the line camera to get them.

Guys, I just want to point out that Sony made a firmware upgrade for the A7Riii that really changed it's capabilities compared to what it was when unboxed in 2017. Somewhere around 2018-2019 the firmware (was it 3.0 ?) release really enhanced the Eye AF for Humans and Animals. I remember at the time it was like I just had got a new camera and I remember how much I was so grateful to Sony then. Those were the days. These days I use an A1 (May 2021) and love it. Yes, and as all you others, I would like to get a new firmware upgrade that would enhance the capabilities of the A1. March 2024 firmware promise - at least from what I have read - doesn't do anything for me in my real day usage. Great show. Keep up the great work.

So you do many a camera or lense shootout. Why not do an actual, whole-system shootout or system review on a somewhat regular schedule (I reckon yearly would be pretty reasonable)? This would be incredibly helpful to new phtographers who are coming from nothing, and give you the sort of freedom to talk about general traits of systems, like how one system has a larger proportion of lenses with lots of breathing, or how some systems rely much more heavily on corrections/processing to deliver the image quality they promise.

The 3rd host comes across as someone who's 1) never worked in a camera store 2) isn't familiar with camera manufacturers in general. Regarding APSC cameras...most customers shop on price in this segment, then features after. So it makes sense to have a camera at every price point. The only cameras I'd argue are redundant are the a6100 and a6400. Secondly, when it comes to his "oh my God SOOO many cameras too bloated!!" sentiment...is he aware that most manufacturers have a lot of APSC cameras...? Canon alone has at least 8. Nikon has 4. Fujifilm has 9. So what are we talking about here? At least with Sony, you can point to clear use cases for most cameras (vloggers, compact shooters, videographers, hybrid shooters).

I had two A7C versions. But being full frame, they simply don't fulfill the implicit promise to have a more compact setup!
In the end, the full frame glass is the problem, not the camera body. And since I'm not a bokeh head, I like a bit more of my frame to be recognizable. The conclusion was the A7600.
I never even felt like my RX100V was missing anything for photos. audio/video was iffy tho...

On the subject of lens mount diameter: I've also often read that it restricts the IBIS, but that's also wrong. Very few lenses are telecentric, i.e. the light rays do not hit the sensor at right angles, but at a slight angle. That's why they can pass through such a narrow spot as the lens mount and still produce a larger image at the back in which the sensor can move. The only technical limitation of the small mount is the ability to build very fast, telecentric lenses. But nobody would build them anyway, because they would be much too big, heavy and expensive for normal users. It is also often forgotten that not the diameter alone but also the flange focal distance is decisive. From this, you can geometrically derive the maximum angle that the light rays can reach at the edge of the image, and that is the decisive factor for lens design

There are different parts of the sw upgrade strategy from the camera vendors. Some companies need multiple upgrades to fix the autofocus reasonably well (eg Nikon Z9 took quite some time to fix AF and still not on par with eg A1). Other companies need quite some time to deliver SW that fix glaring overheating problems (eg Canon R5). A SW upgrade strategy can be to fix these kind of important and basis aspects before release and therefor needing less SW upgrades. An expensive camera should provade the performance when you buy it. Not 6-12 months later.

Sony is more affordable initially (when also looking at the lenses available), but the lack of support really puts me of. In terms of camera I am considering I am looking at the Sony A7IV or Sony A7CII. I'm mainly orientated towards landscape, nature and wildlife photography.
If looking at Nikon the Z8 is the only option for me which is considerable more expensive, which is the main reason I am looking mostly to Sony.
