Love the formfactor of the X100 line. I had the T, but the AF wasn't quite there, IS would have been great and a tilting screen would have been great. So i changed to a interchangeable lens - Fuji (and kind of regretted selling the T). The X100VI is now almost the perfect camera for me and it is just pure joy to use.
I've been waiting for this review....live vicariously through Chris and Jordan While I wait for my pre-order (are you listening "Fuji Canada & The Camera Store"?)!!!
I've been so tempted for this camera, with the small form factor and the 40 megapixel quality, so even at the range, I could crop without too much quality lost. But I wonder if I'm just being swept by the hype. Thanks for covering this camera. Its image quality is amazing and the article is helpful.
I’ve had an X100S since release, and it’s a fun walk around camera. Obviously, the VI has many improvements, but the general use cases are the same. I absolutely agree that it would be more useful with a 28, 40 or 50mm equivalent lens. This is also priced too high for what you get compared to other Fuji bodies. Take the viral hype away, and this would fit nicely in the niche of a niche that it was in before TikTok. If you want something in the Fujifilm system that takes just about the same photos as this, get an XT5.
Yes, except you can't add an ƒ/2 pocketable lens that close focuses to 10CM and no build in ND. I have the excellent Fuji 30mm ƒ/2.8 macro on my X-T4 or X-A7 for semi pocketable stuff, and am happier with 45mm equiv @ 2.8, and even closer focus - but it's not the size of the X100 series.
I hope Panasonic and Olympus take notice because both have IBIS technology and can easily produce a similar camera. Even right now, you could use a GX9 or PENF with any of the pancake lenses (Panasonic 12-32mm, 15mm, 20mm, or Olympus 14-42) and have a pocketable camera with similar features. Less megapixels (20MP vs 40MP) but also less money.
Buy an X-T5 instead. Almost the same size and you can put whatever lens you want on it. That's what I did. It cost $100 more for the T5 body. (I already had Fuji lenses though).
I remember a long wait to get my hands on the X100S back in the day. Loved the camera. It ended up being a "gateway" to the Leica M for me :-) I still have the X100S though I don't use it as much these days. It used to be in my briefcase back when I commuted to work every day in the pre-pandemic era.
I've had a X100V for a few years, and people think it's a toy. It's a GREAT camera - I/m sure that the VI is an improvement. When taking group portraits I back off and crop the image - it's like shooting with a 50mm or 70mm lens, and still sharp. So I recently bought an X-T50 with zoom lens. The camera body is also small, and the kit lens is also small, and it has IBIS. The best of both worlds?
I wasn’t a believer but I got the cam and it’s miles ahead of the V in speed, image quality is also better no matter how much people claim 40MP isn’t a big jump. AF-C is now usable compared to the previous AF generation, close to my XH2 considering the lens doesn’t sport a LM motor
For anyone who’s getting FOMO over the X100vi, I’d highly recommend looking forward to the upcoming X-T50. Compact size, lens options, IBIS, and 40 mp (and presumably a lower cost). If I already didn’t have the X-t5 and X100vi, I’d be looking at that as my first budget option.
Tx for the very interesting and real review. You forgot a lot of things, cause the flipscreen doesn´t work in Portrait. The D-Pad is missing, the camera is far from being perfect. Fujifilm messed it up to the point of not being able to deliver amounts demanding the market.
@@jolimabecause you can swap lenses. If you're just starting out, you might find you don't like the 35mm equivalent focal length of the VI. With the XT50 you'll be able to swap lenses. TBH, if you're just starting out, buy a cheaper second hand camera and save the money for a couple of lenses to find out what you like and don't like (most cameras built after 2015 are good enough). It doesn't make sense to drop $1600+ on a fixed lens system as your first camera if you're serious about getting into photography but unsure what you'll like. Don't follow the hype, the VI won't make you a better photographer and there's a ton of alternatives with more flexibility and a smaller price tag. You could pick up the XT30ii and two or three lenses for the same money, for example.
@@JamieFurlong thx for the answer - makes a lot of sense. Actually I had the x100v for a few months and adored the form factor (doing mainly street photography so far); but I wasn’t so happy with the 35 mm and the ibis and sold it again. I had tried some other Fuji bodies in the shop, but back then then pancake lense just seemed nice a small as well was sharper in the x- then in combination with other bodies… Now thinking if the x1006 with wide converter could do the trick or I should go for a changeable lense system
@@jolima if you're already familiar with the form factor then you're definitely in a better position to answer your question than I am. I'm not really a Fuji user and only own three Fuji lenses, all pancakes (I have an old XE2S, which I love). If you like the form factor it sounds like there's a 50mm and 28mm adapter, which covers all your street bases, but you're still using the same lens. With interchangable there's a lot more options when it comes to lenses, but maybe this isn't the most important consideration for you.
Another use I have for the x100 series is to carry it while walking with a long telephoto on a heavier FF body so I don't need to change lenses for wider scenes.
I've always been a stills photographer (other than the odd video shot on my iPhone travelling or of family). I would love to understand more about different video formats. I'd love to see an episode where Jordan talked about the applications of all of these formats. For example, if I was shooting a video of one of my bands for RUclips, what would be the best format? What about for broadcast on a TV music program? What would be required there? As far as the X100VI ....I wish Fuji would bring out an XE4 replacement so I could have a compact camera that I could set-up with different lenses for different applications.
I bought a used XPRO2 for 600 and a used XH1, with Viltrox 56mm f1.4 and batterygrip (and some stuff) for 800 used, added a used 18-55 for 200 and a new 23mmf1.2, for a grand total of 2000 € You may decide who has the better deal. I also have an old Leica D-Lux , that i still use and love.
The hype is that a lot of RUclips photography influencers have so many cameras that they can add a fixed lens, fixed focal length camera for the times when 35mm is suitable for them. I think a lot of photographers see these videos, decide that they, too, can be an award-winning street photographer, order the camera, and have it sit on their shelf.
@@ProbablyAnAmateur Yes, having two cameras and using them is very typical. I was specifically referring to the fixed prime lens camera sitting on a shelf.
Had to wait a huge 6 weeks for mine. Had the V before. Certainly worth an upgrade if you can get a good price for the old camera. The colour rendering above all else is improved with the lovely 40MP camera. Don't get the fuss about Reala Ace though. Definitely don't upgrade for that. Just use provia, with less saturation, a tad more clarity and less contrast. Few mention this, but the build quality is every bit as good as the V. If anything the quality of the dials has improved and has a bit less plasticky wobbly feel. And yes you do notice the lens is a tiny fraction longer. I think that's why there's a slightly deeper lens cap - to try to hide this a bit. Some might complain about the crop factors in video, but I actually use it to my benefit to get a bit closer to the action without the TC. A real shame the digital teleconverters aren't available for video, but this is one way to get around it! That teleconverter is rather big. The wide angle converter is tiny though. Tap to track really surprises me. It actually works.
I don't mind the 35mm as an option. But as a fixed and only option, it's hard for me to swallow, and I would also prefer the 50mm in this case. It also needs the accessory to be weather resistant, so I would be stuck with the 35. It would be great if they made other focal length options. Even better if they made a full frame version with a series of compact interchangeable lenses. The money is in the accessories, so I see them releasing something like that in the future.
Hey Chris, you can always put the WCL on it for a wider view. 😉 As usual, great review from you folks. As for me, ibis is tempting, but the X100V, XT4 with zoom lenses, and DJI Pocket 2 Creative Bundle suit me fine for now. Rather than upgrading what I have, would prefer to get a HoverAir X1 "pocket sized flying camera". And a new bicycle. 🙃🙂 edited for typos
I've had an X100V since it's launch, loooong before Tiktok / Influencers blew this camera up. It's sadly stained the discussion around this camera, it's simply a joy to use these cameras and the X100 VI looks even more awesome. Does it replace a full interchangeable camera body? Obviously not, but people act like thats what people are doing with this thing.
Nah, nobody thinks you're replacing a full frame interchangeable system. They just want the evangelising to stop. The X100 people are like door to door jehova's witnesses, if they were also vegans. It's a 7/10 camera. 8/10 if nobody releases any competing compacts. Let's stop talking about it now. 👋
I think for a fixed camera, its not pocketsize engough. Ill go with my Ricoh, as a realy smal camera. If i go with the 50mm i can grab my xt3 its not so a big differenz in size.
I got an X100VI on day one & LOVE it! I have Sony a7CR & Sony a7Cii for landscape & pano & nature images, and the X100VI is just FUN & EASY for everything else.
Great video, very informative; everything that I wanted to know about the camera was cover. It’s great to know that the 40mps and the ibis actually work and inform the images. Excellent. (As to Sub’g, I couldn’t see a box to tick ? I did press the Subscribe on screen, but that didn’t seem to work either …. )
How did you obtain the cameras? Purchased? From Fuji? I only ask because the number one question, that none of the many videos I’ve seen, address how they obtained the camera/s despite lack of availability. I have to ask myself, is that because they purchased on ebay or other third party scalpers? If not, why would they not say how long they waited for their purchase to arrive. Otherwise it make sense to clarify it was on loan or obtained directly from manufacturer, no?
worth noting is Fuji's release of the new xt-50 in mid May. Almost an x100vi but with interchangeable lenses. No built in ND of course, but IBIS, the 40mp sensor, and the new processor should be there.
Received my x100vi two weeks ago. Sold my x100v. I, too, find the OVF just a gimmick and use the EVF. In customizing the functions I discovered that by activating "3D" level vs "2D" (3D adds a virtual horizon) the OVF is disabled. At first I thought my new camera was defective. Spoke with Fuji support and together we experimented: it's the 3D function. But I don't use the OVF so it's irrelevant. I love the new camera and can handhold slower exposures. I don't use the tracking AF. Access requires too much menu diving. (Sony does it better - on my a7CR and a7Rv I have subject tracking on a custom button and target selecting in a Fn field). When hand holding I prefer to focus with a center small spot then reframe and fire. I have the touch screen disabled since it moves the focus point when I don't wish it to (less of an issue on the Sony bodies where I can fold the screen closed when not needing it). Most of all, shooting with this gem is like using the cameras on which I learned 70 years ago as a child: my dad's Leica IIIf rangefinders.
Hi Chris, I don't know if you are aware, but there is a 28mm conversion kit you can get for the x100 series. I was looking to purchase this camera and i am a bit put off with the 35mm perspective from the lens. I have never used it either, but for me i want to venture into some wider landscapes with this camera and i think the 28mm conversion kit may be useful for this. None the less, i am sure you are already aware of this but i thought i would just add the comment here! Nice, well structured and informative video as always!
I know this reply is from 3 months ago but I wanted to say I have the 28mm converter for the x100v and I love it so much! If you're able to get a hold of one of you decide on the VI (if you can find anywhere that has one that is) I highly recommend it!
preordered mine from a local camera store rather than one of the larger online retailers. They only took a small deposit to secure a preorder which gets applied to the final purchase price (some retailers charging the full amount with no means of delivering any time soon seemed silly to me). I figured I am going to wait, may as well wait with my order through a store I can drive to in minutes.
I have an A7C... I... fail to see how this is better than slapping the zeiss 35mm 2.8 into it and call it a day. or even just go with my a6500 and the sigma 18/50, almost as portable. If I want to go ultraportable might as well go rx100VA.
You're missing the point. It isn't "better". That's not why people love it. If you don't, that's ok, but no one is buying this camera because it is "better" than some other setup. You're not breaking into new intellectual territory by pointing this out.
Appreciate the detailed breakdown! I need some advice: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (behave today finger ski upon boy assault summer exhaust beauty stereo over). How can I transfer them to Binance?
Used to love 35mm equivalent. Still love the x100vi in principle and it means I have a camera literally in my pocket when I might have none at all. But i find myself drawn more and more to 28mm, 40mm and 50mm these days. And have a 23 1.4 for the x-t5 for one lens one camera days, which I already don't use enough. The plan was to replace it with the x100vi for this purpose. Would I take it on a trip to japan or any big trip? No. X-t5 and 3 lenses will nearly always make the kit. Two camera carry with a tele or telezoom on the x-t5, a good option. But heavier than an extra lens and changing lenses. But as a compact option with familiar controls and output, that means I have a camera when I otherwise wouldnt, and for putting subjects at ease, it's a great option. Just rather expensive if you have to buy at full price compared to a 23mm f2 lens for 1/3 the price - even if not quite as good. I wasn't sure if I'd keep it, but creating custom presets that really reflect the nature of the camera and type of photography I'm more likely to do with it really helped me grown to appreciate it more. Just using my x-t5 presets made me miss the performance of that camera. It's a great way to distinguish the cameras some more, even if a bit artificial.
Amazing that you managed to obtain 1/3 of the worlds fuji X100 VI inventory to produce this video
I recommend Bangladesh as another production location for Fuji.

@@ams914 They're skipping the X-T40 name.
@@ams914 xt-30ii is the same gen of X-T4, so it's most likely to be called XT50.
Be great to be able to get hold of one. On back order everywhere. Launched in February and it’s now the end of April.
I hope for xpro4
Made in Japan too. That’s a beauty ❤
Still waiting on mines. I was in Asia when I ordered it from B&H. Now I’m back in SF and about to visit the local camera shop to see if they have it.
I've been so tempted for this camera, with the small form factor and the 40 megapixel quality, so even at the range, I could crop without too much quality lost. But I wonder if I'm just being swept by the hype. Thanks for covering this camera. Its image quality is amazing and the article is helpful.
I recall the X100 has a wide angle conversion lens that change sit to 28mm equivalent, was Petapixel not able to get one of these for Chris?
I just got mine delivered today. An hour after you upload this video.
Great video, glad to find your new channel, work got me away from photography for awhile.
Does anyone know how Chris feels about the 35mm focal length? I’m assuming it’s his favourite.
Chris, did the camera fit in the sling bag you were using? If so, what make/model is it?
Buy an X-T5 instead. Almost the same size and you can put whatever lens you want on it. That's what I did. It cost $100 more for the T5 body. (I already had Fuji lenses though).
The colours in the vid are really nice. I’ve shot many Fujis and either love the colour or fight the magenta. Vid here is on point.
I would subscribe again if you made Jordan shoot 3 episodes on an unconventional camera like a Canon XC-10 or a Pentax K-1! That Pentax would be nice.
TBH, I never did gel with the x100f. I skipped the V and have the VI on order. That being said, I now feel the upcoming XT-50 will be a better buy.
I’m just starting my journey looking for the right camera. Why you thing the xt-50 might be better?
With interchangable there's a lot more options when it comes to lenses, but maybe this isn't the most important consideration for you.
great review and yet so hard to get this camera. hope the can supply the demand soon.
Give us the Zf review! We are waiting for your promised full review.
Much appreciated we love your content.
Another use I have for the x100 series is to carry it while walking with a long telephoto on a heavier FF body so I don't need to change lenses for wider scenes.
Do I always thumbs up your petapixel videos before I watch all the way through? Yes. Do I ever regret it?... No. ;)
Hey Chris, love how your Orvis is rendered with the VI. I want one to wear out on shoots, (and for trout fishing). What is the model type please?
I've always been a stills photographer (other than the odd video shot on my iPhone travelling or of family). I would love to understand more about different video formats. I'd love to see an episode where Jordan talked about the applications of all of these formats. For example, if I was shooting a video of one of my bands for RUclips, what would be the best format? What about for broadcast on a TV music program? What would be required there?
As far as the X100VI ....I wish Fuji would bring out an XE4 replacement so I could have a compact camera that I could set-up with different lenses for different applications.
Chris making me reconsider my love for 35mm.
Btw is Ricoh even gonna make a GR4(x)?
I bought a used XPRO2 for 600 and a used XH1, with Viltrox 56mm f1.4 and batterygrip (and some stuff) for 800 used, added a used 18-55 for 200 and a new 23mmf1.2, for a grand total of 2000 €
You may decide who has the better deal.
I also have an old Leica D-Lux , that i still use and love.
They had three X100 VI's on the streets of SF and made it out alive?
Right?
That must be all of the three that have actually been delivered 😂
You didn’t see the body guards just off screen lol jk 😂
Idk whether the joke is on Fuji market availability or SF streets.
Great video, great review. I really loved the colour in this video - fabulous stuff. 🎉🎉🎉
The hype is that a lot of RUclips photography influencers have so many cameras that they can add a fixed lens, fixed focal length camera for the times when 35mm is suitable for them. I think a lot of photographers see these videos, decide that they, too, can be an award-winning street photographer, order the camera, and have it sit on their shelf.
i have two cameras and i use them. :( i wouldnt want a fixed lens camera though.
@@ProbablyAnAmateur Yes, having two cameras and using them is very typical. I was specifically referring to the fixed prime lens camera sitting on a shelf.
Seeing how many X100Vs are on sale with under 10k shutter count says it all
@@Skux720 It was an eBay phenomenon. 😀
@@UnconventionalReasoning i didnt see that. thats just weird.
Subscribed! You guys are great!
Thanks for the review!
So, I subscribed and look forward to you guys trying out Surströmming in June!
15:59 his jeans are colour banding like crazy!
the fact that it's just in that one spot, maybe pushed a color correction too far in in Resolve or something that exposed the compression artifacts.
I assume some kind of light source is reflecting/rippling off the water.
@@Paul_Rohdenah that’s 100% a digital artefact.
I’ve seen it in some cameras where certain colors fall apart
edited for typos
Great, fun and informative video. Good locations. Great camera for stills, worth the hype.
Let's all pitch in and get Chris a 35mm lens for Christmas!
I picked up a 2.5mm to 3.5mm cable instead of using the dongle that converts it, takes up less space, less chance of bumping it against something
I think for a fixed camera, its not pocketsize engough. Ill go with my Ricoh, as a realy smal camera. If i go with the 50mm i can grab my xt3 its not so a big differenz in size.
The cultists claim its pocketable, and its not. GRIII is the limit
@@VoltLover00 It's not the cultists: it's the "I'm wearing cargo pants and/or a jacket all year round" crowd.
We’re never going to get one now after your great review 😢
I'm waiting on the Lumix LX-100 mark III or a fix lens OM System Pen-F digital....
That’s the entire stock of the product. Dang what a flex.
The pictures looks so digital.... like smartphone photos. I love the x100 line, but there's no doubt a very clinical and digital look to the images.
Did Jordan record in FLOG2 with Eterna LUT or in Eterna adjusted? STILL WAITING 😂
The answer is yes! He did both.
@@PetaPixel I just see myself getting a few travel static clips using film simulations. We don’t need all these video features but nice to have.
I will continue waiting for the X- Pro4.
worth noting is Fuji's release of the new xt-50 in mid May.
I’m paying for youtube premium but creators push commercials anyway, I watch a lot of youtube and it’s starting to piss me off.
Hi Chris,
I don't know if you are aware, but there is a 28mm conversion kit you can get for the x100 series.
How did you guys manage to get your hands on 3 of these?

As of end of April 2024, in Malaysia X100VI is sold by official retailer for RM 15000. For reference, that's about 3000 USD.
preordered mine from a local camera store rather than one of the larger online retailers. They only took a small deposit to secure a preorder which gets applied to the final purchase price (some retailers charging the full amount with no means of delivering any time soon seemed silly to me). I figured I am going to wait, may as well wait with my order through a store I can drive to in minutes.
And the local store isn't funneling all of the cmaeras to You Tube reviewers.
Jaron always gets what he wants - bloody Rolling Stones have been lying to me all these years😁
I have an A7C... I... fail to see how this is better than slapping the zeiss 35mm 2.8 into it and call it a day. or even just go with my a6500 and the sigma 18/50, almost as portable. If I want to go ultraportable might as well go rx100VA.
Or Canon R8 + RF 28mm f2.8
Exactly, Sony 7C plus Sony Za 35mm is totally better! If I want a 50mm I go out with Sony Za 55mm. Unbeatable combos!
@@michaelajoseph6856 not to mention huge iq increase. and is still portable enough. I also love my 55mm zeiss 1.8.
You're missing the point. It isn't "better". That's not why people love it. If you don't, that's ok, but no one is buying this camera because it is "better" than some other setup. You're not breaking into new intellectual territory by pointing this out.
+1 got A7CR + 28-60 kit lens as a starter and I'm loving it so far

Great shots of my hometown!
It's a great way to distinguish the cameras some more, even if a bit artificial.
can i have info about the pouch in your chest? is it for x100vi?
35mm is my favorite focal length lol but this time I'm training myself to use my Z14-24 S as my main walk-around
I would like to know the name of this small shoulder bag
