Best investment I've ever made was getting the Kreg jig, at first I was a little skeptical about paying the money for it. It has paid itself off over the years. Thanks for the video, this will be super helpful when I go to make cabinetry for the shop!

I like the general premise. Great build! You could easily take the set of plans and convert them to more of a custom "craftsman" type of build by using hardwoods all the way around, although that would add considerable sanding and finish time to the build. You could also line the inside with Aromatic Cedar... a very nice touch. A Festool Domino would be as easy and as fast to use as the pocket screws and you would not see any obvious signs of how you did the joinery. You could also choose from several different types of hinges to give yourself or customers a more customized look to it. Great solid build using a simple tools and easily converted to a more "sophisticated" look and build. Thanks Shawn!

You build like I do in some respects. If that Blanket Chest had been on the Bismarck, it would probably be the only thing left that was still in one piece :-) It should last for generations. Well Done !!!!
Very nice. Interesting how everyone makes things differently. Whenever I make something like this I build the box first then attach the trim after with glue and brads.
Fill the pocket screw holes and the other screw holes with wooden plugs (Kreg makes plugs for their pocket screw holes), and sand them flush with the wood/plywood before finishing. Makes the fastener system invisible and a much neater finish. Otherwise nice build!
I’m familiar with the kreg plugs. I’ve actually used them before and since the pocket holes were on the inside and not visible I didn’t worry about it, but I appreciate the explanation. Thanks for watching.
I agree. It does not go with the design and just does not look good. Some antique finish hinges would have been my choice but I could not have done better with the build. I would have been proud of this build.
Great video and project! At 2:45 you mention putting a v groove in the joints to help the paint stick to the joints during wood movement. What kind of router bit is used for this?

The wood would cost you 4 or 5 times as much now probably. Two months ago I bought 5/4 decking for $7.50 per 8 foot piece. One month ago it was $14.50. Prices are approximate but are representative.
I like it, but I'm surprised to see you use the piano hinge. Rockler makes such nice hinges which would have added to the beauty of the chest. Just my .02
For some reason, any project for family especially for your kids really feels much more satisfying to see the end result I'd say. It looks great!

Yes. There are a lot of different hinges that would work.
What type of wood did you use?
Can you post dimensions. What did your friend use to thin the paint and can you post the part or a pic of the router bit, used for the V notch.
is it possible to screw the hinges from the inside to hide it?

How do you like your Kobalt Miter?
It’s good, just big. It’s not 100 percent accurate as I use the miter saw as a rough cut anyways.
Only thing I would have done is cover the pocket holes inside then paint over them to hide them. Good video and build otherwise.
