- Van Flyheight piloting a Liger Zero? Yeah, that's a part of the Zoids Chaotic Century Manga, a lesser-known piece of media in the already niche Zoids franchise.
So I thought it was about time I shined some light on it. Although it definitely isn't the greatest piece of fiction ever made, it's still a pretty enjoyable ride and if you're a Zoids fan, I'm sure you'll love to learn more about it.

This bad boy is the longest I’ve worked on a video in a WHILE but I think it turned out pretty mad so I hope you all sit back and enjoy it!
I’m also thinking of gearing the channel more towards this long form content going forward. There will be less videos but I reckon it’s worth the wait, and I feel a lot more proud to release longer/better thought out videos too.
I might change my mind and completely flip on that idea but we’ll see how we go 😅

Hey Viseak, have you ever thought about doing a video going over and reviewing some of the Zoids 3d videos, like Bit and the Blitz team vs Van, Irvine, Thomas, and Raven 3d fan made video?
I used to think as a kid that the Liger Zero Bit had in the anime was originally Van's. That they transplant zeke as the core of the new zoid. Which is why zero liked Bit coz he reminded him of van.

1:16 My parents will mention having liked the zoids anime every now and then too, specifically chaotic century that would be on before school. It was definitely preferred over the pokemon anime we used to watch over breakfast. Nothing beats Beast Wars though, my dad still brings that up, and while the awkward early computer animation has aged pretty poorly, the plot and performances are rock solid.
I think it’s got to do with the fact it was an ‘anime’ rather than a kids show so it must’ve felt like a breath of fresh air to our parents 😅
Never watched Beast Wars personally though, I think it was a little bit before my time
@@Viseak Beast Wars is streaming free on Tubi, each episode is a standalone plot with the occasional 2parter. Classic 90s TV. Also it's a bit darker and dips into horror more than someone might expect from a show that exists to promote children's toys. Episode 3 literally has torture, there's also mind control, war crimes, constant treason, an entire episode about being blinded in a survival situation, and one with an evil clone.
@@lietz13 they really were pretty wild back then with shows catered to literally selling kids toys.
Even early 2000’s shows like the OG Beyblade, Bakugan and Yugioh could get kinda dark at times.
You barely see anything like that nowadays it all feels so ‘polished’ and bubbly I guess would be the way I’d put it. Almost like they’re trying too hard to make sure you KNOW it’s for kids.
In Beast Wars, the guerrilla-style fights and banter between the characters from both Maximal and Predacon sides were the show’s meat. There was also that one perma-death that was a really big deal back in the 90s.

Fantastic re-cap and breakdown, tried to read the manga so many times but it's so hard to get a hold of it all. So glad I've finally got to know the full manga story!
It’s definitely a harder one to get your hands on, but I’m glad you’ve finally gotten the full experience!

Interestingly enough, the Anime Club at the high school I went to, which I was a part of at the time, got a grant from a local business that was used to purchase new Manga for the library. I put Zoids Chaotic Century on the list and somehow they managed to get every single volume. I'll also note though, that I'd already read it previously at my local library which is how I found out that it even existed.
Excellent video! I always knew there was aanga but could never get my hands on a copy. And wow it's so different! I never knew. It makes me love the anime so much more. I love your zoids videos btw, your the only one out there really making zoids content and I love it!

The manga’s definitely quite different but heaps of fun none the less. Feels like a fan fiction sometimes with how wacky it can get featuring most of the same characters we know from the anime 😅

Absolutely amazing video! I was captivated the entire way through. After seeing this it's clear how much inspiration the GBA games took from the manga. Everything kind of clicks together now. I also really enjoyed the back story at the beginning. So many cool ideas explored that probably wouldn't have worked in an anime form.
I'm actually working on a full re-edit of Chaotic Century/Guardian Force. I'm trying to cut out a lot of the fluff that's obviously there just to pad time and make it flow a lot smoother. As well as trying to make the "edgy" themes into actual darker, heavier themes. Not sure how I'm going to release it yet. Whether it be hour long episodes or longer movie like episodes. It's a lot of work. Just working on the first 3 episodes has taken me over a month but ends up only being about 30 mins of content. It's insane. It won't be for everyone but it's a passion project that I feel that I just have to make.
When I have something cohesive together I'll PM you a link as I would love your thoughts on it if it's something you might be interested in.

I think a more condensed version of chaotic century would be a great thing, like while I might enjoy the whole series for what it is cause I grew up with it, a lot of newcomers would probably find plenty of it pointless and filler or probably even a bit cringey at times, it definitely isn’t a perfect anime 😅

As an old man collector since the mid 80's I was into Zoids way before they moved into anime and mangas. I never really delved into that portion of it all that much. Thank you for enlightening me on a vast array of it. I've actually had a story line in my mind for decades. I hammered it out quite a long time ago. It was called 'The Last Gungyarados '. My favorite zoid and like the model itself, with it's many poses, the name has a few spellings as well. I have always opted for my 1st finding of the translation of it's name. I won't give away any of the story line at this point. I hope to some day have someone with more artful talent bring it to life, ideally in a anime.

Zoids choatic century is the case where anime adaption is better than manga. Very interesting and on to the matter I can't zoid wild zero review or next zoid genesis vid.
This is the first time i heard of what the king gojulas and gilvader and madthunder were all about, thanks so much dude. I had a madthunder as a kid, and i had a friend who couldnt stop flaunting his king gojulas to me, tho we neither knew where they were from cuz we only had the anime for context
Yeah exactly I never really knew about the King Gojulas or Mad Thunder till I looked into the battle story (which is what that whole manga prelude is based off) and it’s honestly pretty cool
Wish some of those guys got featured in the anime, least we saw the Gilvader in Genesis
@@Viseak i never got into genesis, the last zouds anime i watched was...fuzors and by then i was growing out of the toys and also they stopped selling them in my country so... yeah. I hotta check if you made a zoids genesis vid, i wanna know about the story. I am meanwhile not looking forward to getting into zoids wild haha. And in the intervening years i became a gundam geek, so i hope you can do vids about gundam at eome point too! Once a plamo boi, always a plamo boi.

I’m definitely planning for more Gundam content, specifically I’m tossing up making a long form video like this on Zeta Gundam, might be a hot minute until you see that come out though 😅

wait... so Bit, Van and all those "people" are aliens that just also happen to look like human earthlings?
I still have the Marvel Zoids comics from the 80’s!.. the humans caught up in the story were stranded on the planet while the Zoids battled it out and it was like a mix of alien & Terminator in places.. it was great!
I remember one of the libraries by me finally began circulating manga many years back around when the show was still on Toonami, and they randomly only carried volumes 4 and 5 of this manga. And goober me instead of actually reading it, was like "ew what did they do to Irvine" and never read them :(. I regret that decision to this day. Thank goodness for Iron Bible!

I’m very glad the Iron Bibles around as well I can’t imagine ever paying the insane re-sale on the remaining copies I don’t own. Although I did notice there was a page missing in volume 7 I think (I included it in the video) where the Geno Breaker got it’s head sliced right off, so I do wonder if any other pages are missing from their archives 🤔
Honestly I loved making the long form video and might do it more going forward, it just takes ages to produce and I always feel like I’m leaving everyone hanging 😅
@@Viseak Jeez I can only imagine the resale of these manga too b/c they're beyond out of print by now. I've noticed some manga sites skip pages (or for whatever reason censorship things from the region it gets posted up) so not surprising but just another reason why physical copies of anything will never go away. But anyway!

As far as I’m aware it was only released in the states (and Japan of course) so no matter what I’m paying like 20-30 just for freight which is rough
The one missing page does make me wonder what else might’ve been missing, especially from the later chapters with Raven, it could’ve gotten pretty grim so it wouldn’t surprise me if stuff in there was censored, but I’ll probably never know
Great video, it honestly makes me wish I had more Zoids fans to talk with in person. Now with that being said, I wanted to respond to your opinion about Van's attitude towards Caesar being transferred to a Liger Zero body. Honestly, I'd probably agree with you if Van hadn't already experienced basically losing Caesar and then Caesar transforming into a completely different Zoid. Yes technically, in this context at least, the Blade Liger was a direct Evolution of the Shield Liger, but the Liger Zero could basically be considered a similar thing albeit an indirect evolution to the Blade Liger. Though it was a transplant, the principle was the same. Also, even though they are 2 separate situations, I think you could also look at Van in GF and the Blade Liger body being unable to keep up with his piloting abilities. Though there was no transplant in the shows, besides Irvine, I think it would make sense to essentially Upgrade to a more capable version if the opportunity presented itself. I'm only using that situation as potential reasoning however farfetched it might be.
Yeah I agree the Liger Zero was the natural progression for Ceasar, but it still should’ve felt pretty foreign to Van even without the emotional impact.
It’d be like changing car, even if you drove a MK4 Supra for years and swapped its 2J into a new MK5 A90 Supra it’d feel like an entirely different car and take you a little while to get used to, but it was all super seamless.
I guess there is the whole thing of Zoids being living machines which might just compensate for that though 😅
@@Viseak You make a good point, but thinking about it, I feel that any awkwardness that could've been there would be negated because it would be essentially like having a player assist on at all times which I think is basically what you were saying at the end.

Strong maybe on that one, to be frank those videos aren’t very fun to make and at the moment I really don’t want to make anymore, BUT that doesn’t mean I won’t think of a cool way to bring them back in the future

On the whole naming zoids thing. Most of them were developed as military equipment and giving names to things like tanks is already common enough, now if you make that tank a living animal I don't see a reason why people wouldn't name their zoids it's weird that they don't in the anime
I've always loved the Chaotic Century manga as it allowed me to make some sort of a "concrete" connection between CC/GF and NCZ. Ever since the first time I read it, I always believed that the Liger Zero from NCZ was Caesar and Zeke and that the BF was Raven's BF and Shadow. I was always bummed that more people didn't know that the manga existed. Since the shows were primarily promotional, it sucked that no series got any real development post Guardian Force. Apparently there is also at least one volume of a Zoids manga featuring Bit, but I've never had an opportunity to read that.

I loved the manga

A lot of British people apparently give their cars names, so it's not out of the question that people would name far more animal-like zoids.
Well, I learned a lot here today. lol
But I also gained a series of new questions all the same.
But instead of trying to ask all of them, I'll simply ask this;
If you go by the manga feats, can a Zoid compete in a 1v1 against a Gundam? Previously, the biggest issue with that comparison was the size difference. While Zoids are large, Gundam are about double the height, and seem to have much better reflexes. But if you look at that chapter where the Shield Liger dodged that railgun, that is some gundam level reflexes.
Yeah there’s a lot 😅
I still reckon Gundam would win out, even if just because of how much crazier their arsenal is.
But there is something to be said about Zoids being living things and having minds of their own, two seperate brains working in harmony will have far better synergy than even a Newtype I feel.
But it’s just hard to get over the sheer size and arsenal of Gundams
@@Viseak I'd be curious to see how a Gundam fares against the Gravity Cannon though. I mean, sure, they'd dodge it, but surely no gundam can endure it otherwise. Does the Gundam universe even have a weapon or shield capable of blocking the hyper gravity?
Manga's version of Raven shows more depth to his character; Raven witnessing the deaths of his family is rather tragic. Seeing Raven break down emotionally; seeing him cry makes me cry as well
It definitely fleshes him out a lot more and I really appreciate that fact, I just can’t help but like the anime version more, seeing him cry over shadow is like a punch in the gut every time
I'm currently reading the Manga... And may have spoiled myself watching this video but I do agree with some of the points... It does feel rushed... And I think that talking through the mind with your mecha may have been inspired by the newtypes from the Gundam series... And lastly that crossover with Genesis is actually cool but I actually believe that this Manga is more canon with new century anime than the chaotic century anime as well...

Funnily enough I bought volumes 1-7 all together on eBay from someone over in the states who definitely didn’t know how rare these can be.
For all we know they could be those very same copies, it isn’t often you see that many volumes lumped together after all. I mean I doubt they’re actually the ones but still it’s possible 😅

Yeah I’m based in Aus, there’s a couple places you can order kits from, locally 105th Armoury and Gundam Express Australia have been great.
But sometimes a place called Okini Land based out of Osaka can end up cheaper, especially for smaller kits like the shadow fox, command wolf etc
I’ve used all 3 and and can’t fault any of them!
It is actually the manga where they loosely based the first anime of zoids

It's too bad the story didn't conclude properly. I feel like the anime could've spent more time with it's ending, but it still ended. This was a really fun video nonetheless; great recap!

The politics was never the interesting thing about Zoids, this is why New Century resonated with a larger audience.
Very true, CC was always an adventure series at its core with slight political intrigue. It’s definitely not Gundam or anything.
NC really is a far easier to appeal to the masses cause of its simplicity, plus it’s just one big tournament arc and who doesn’t love that

.......WHAT THAT IS THE END OF THE MANGA!? I mean I know that the pacing was really off especially when compared to the anime version and Van's character was pretty ugh when compared to his anime counterpart but come on that was no ending. All EX was is a sort of OK so this is kind of where we want the story to end but not really scenario and I'm not a big fan of it. Plus the more I was hearing you talk about this the more I realize that the story went completely bonkers and there was no real character development and most of the stuff that's supposed to be sad is just brushed aside like Van went through not 1 not 2 but 3 zoids and no emotional weight was added in. Plus while manga raven feels more it was more developed in some sense in comparison to how he was in the show it just felt so fast and not enough time to breathe. And finally you had to broke me when you mentioned that Zeke in the manga had a Loli avatar form.... Damn it Japan why!? So nice to know that this existed even if it did end with a non ending and nice job with the video!
Ex really does feel like the mangaka trying to get all his thoughts on to paper as fast as he could so there’d be more resemblance of an overarching plot, but I was happy enough with the Van | Raven dynamic that I wish it was the sole focus of the manga instead 🥲
The biggest kicker was definitely Van going through 3 Zoids without a care in the world, and then trying to act like he has the moral high ground over Raven, pretty rough to say the least lol

Zeke ending up A. Having a human like avatar and B. it being a loli added literally nothing to the story, except bringing to light the possibility that Shadow has a human like avatar that’s a big tiddy goth mum or something cause they said he’s way older.
