  • Raven from Zoids Chaotic Century / Guardian Force is the perfect antagonist. From his badass Zoids like the Geno Saurer and Geno Breaker to his cold ruthless demeanour, Raven has a lot going for him as a character and makes for the perfect foil to Van Flyheight and his Blade Liger.

Hey I hope you all enjoy the video! Quick bit of context here, the original upload of this video got copyrighted claimed and blocked worldwide within a few minutes of uploading for a couple of seconds of footage that didn’t have my blurred face behind it.
Honestly my disappointment was immeasurable and quite frankly my night was ruined.
But none the less after fixing up the issue, re-exporting and re-uploading we are back with the video on one of my favourite antagonists in fiction.

I love Raven not just because he is one of the best pilots in the entire series but because of his character growth. He literally outgrew his rivalry and confrontation with Van and so does not need to settle any sort of score. Like the Zoids Raven was also freed, and that freedom was achieved through growth. An exceedingly well written character.

You forgot to mention how significant it is for him to go up against Hiltz and Prozen. Hiltz and Ambient are directly responsible for his parent’s deaths. Prozen is directly responsible for Van’s father’s death and Raven’s potential remainder of hope for an adopted family. Prozen conditions him into a soldier. He makes no attempt to show him that Zoids could be used for anything other than bloodshed and warfare. (Which isn’t surprising since Prozen is shown to be power hungry).
Van tries to offer him insight into how important Zoids can be and what good companions they are but Raven doesn’t want to hear it. He doesn’t want to see it, not even in Shadow. It’s not like he chose to work with Shadow, he was told to tame an organoid and he did. That’s all it was to him. He was always driven by instincts and expectations and his strong hatred for Zoids. I always got the impression that he wanted to wipe out Zoids just because he thought they were more of a hindrance to humans than anything else.
It is only when he almost loses Shadow that he begins to realize that he does in fact care about something outside of his trauma and past. That by bringing Shadow to his old home and sitting with all that pain, he can begin to heal, even if that isn’t ever stated. I think it’s a very human thing to go to the last place you were happy to try to repair yourself (the fact he probably hasn’t been truly happy since his parents were alive…..ouch).
That final fight where he takes on the two people who are directly responsible for stealing his happiness is so powerful. When Shadow merges with the Geno Breaker and Raven show genuine happiness at his organoid joining the fight and they work in true unison for the first time EVER is something I feel like a lot of people miss for some reason. Raven has always been a skilled pilot but when he works in harmony with his organoid he is strong enough to cause significant damage to the Death Saurer.
I always see that final defeat of the Death Saurer as a breath of fresh air for everyone but especially for Raven. His abuser and parents murderers’ are dead. The things that were truly shackling him in anger and disgust were broken. And by working alongside Van instead of against him, he can finally be happy. 💜

Raven is hands down the best pilot in Zoids. His voice actor Scott Hendrickson; did a rockin job giving Raven his cold, but awesome voice. On Guardian force, he snaps out of his trance after he saw Van. When Raven embraced Shadow as he turns to stone. I couldn't help but cry when Raven yelled Shadows name in tears.

The most fascinating, horrifying and heart-wrenching thing to me about Raven is that he was a child soldier. Prozen took a traumatised child, then twisted and broke that child into a soldier. God only knows how that child was treated to get him to the point where the only emotions left in him were contempt and rage.
It makes the healing he goes through toward the end of Guardian Force so much more powerful.

I said before and i'll say it again , Raven was one of the best antagonist characters i"ve ever seen. his relationships (Rivalty. Friendship with shadow and even he caring about other near the end being completely the opposite of his characterization at first but well executed throughout the series ) just made him one of my favorite antagonist of all time.
Oh man , What an amazing and underrated franchise CC and GF are , they really cared about their secondaries and the world in general. Because not only Raven ,But lizzy , Irvine. Hermman , and fiona were all great characters. Along with the others (Rudolph , Schwartz, Moombay .)
My fav mecha anime of all time. I still loving this series with all my heart and Raven along with lizzye had a main reason on it.
Good video . I really loved it.

No character ever truly felt left out and they really did a great job with their development.
Honestly watching it back, CC/GF feels like a passion project, as if the studio was told ‘yeah in the grand scheme of things this IS being made to sell toys’, and they kinda just went well let’s make it the most badass, intricate and well thought out advertisement ever.

Right? The theme for Raven is just so memorable, even if you didn’t see it as a theme when you were a kid it’s definitely something that sticks with you.
I think in general rivals tend to be a lot more memorable than villains, as much as I love a good villain, a great rival tends to outshine them most of the time at least from what I’ve seen

Very nice job with this video talking about your favorite antagonist. I would have to think that over the years a lot of people do not really know what an antagonist is and all automatically assume that antagonist means the main villain even though the antagonist could be someone who opposes the main character and what they want. It really doesn't mean that they're the main villain. I completely forgot that raven went through all of that but re hearing all of this again reminded me of how much I did enjoy him as an antagonist to the main character Van. And for a rivalry that transcended from them being teenagers to them being adults and then later on they basically team up to fight the final boss together it's just a great gradual development you know much like what happened in avatar the last air Bender between Aang and Zuko. Just a very solid video over all and if I could say who Would be my favorite antagonist it has to be my boy Zuko. The way he was written actually the way a lot of the characters were written felt strong interesting and by the end it all ties up together in a nice little bow. Granted my favorite antagonist would normally shift depending on my mood but I'm pretty sure for right now Zuko is my favorite. Anyway again great job! And one more thing I've gone around to watching the entirety of attack on Titan and I'm up to season 4 the final season and all I can say is this....DAMN!

    • @Viseak
      @Viseak  3 года назад

Thanks a bunch man! The lines can get blurred between antagonists and villains but typically they are seperate, and typically the antagonist ends up being a better written character at least from what I’ve seen.
Honestly even I forgot a few things about Raven, the main one was that talk he had with Rease towards the end about how he’s come to terms with the fact he has no right to be angry at what Hiltz is doing considering everything he’s done in the past. That to me is what separates Zuko and Raven, Zuko was a bit softer and didn’t kill anyone, at least not that we are aware of, which worked well for Zukos character as it allowed for his redemption because he was never truly bad at heart. Whereas Raven was past the point of no return and had to accept that within himself. Considering everything Raven did he didn’t exactly have an option for redemption, but more so an option for atonement and to move forward which I really respect.
Like I said I love Zuko too though his character really works extremely well, I’m just biased towards Zoids.
It also hurts that little bit more knowing Van and Raven were so close to being adopted brothers at one point in their life, but unfortunately life had other plans for them.
It’s great to hear you’ve caught up on AOT! I’m watching season 4 week by week now too and it’s freaking amazing hey? It’s taking every bit of patience in my body not to read the manga to get ahead hahahaha

And you’ll also have a lot more people that will remember Zoids from their childhood, but not necessarily remember character arcs like Ravens, because hey a lot of us would’ve mainly remembered it for the awesome mecha fights. I really find it great how underneath all of that there’s some amazing characters that you can get to appreciate if you rewatch the series as you get older.

When he appeared on The second season "Guardian force" i was like ohh no!!! Not again !! That's what he meant for me at some point of my life. He stressed me out and made me be afraid for van and his team security. But after his past i finally understand his motives and reason of why he was the way it is.and when he took care of Lizzy (my fav female.character in zoid franchise)i was like What!!!!😆😆😆😆 that was so shocking.

Raven is not my favourite character because of being an antagonist, but as a kid I felt really identified with him, is my first goth crush. Now to the point, my favourite antegonist OR better said antagonists, are the Noah Family in D - Gray man, because they are not just bad they are just part of a bigger game, that the Innocense (that can also be a really huge douche (The Apocryphos)), apparently started or God, seeming that it is the real villain, and the duality of the main character being on one hand one of the fighters against the Noah and their army, in favor of the innocense and the same time, a recently discovered Noah, makes the plot AMAZING, such a shame the mangaka is not really into finising her work :(

@@Viseak Yeah, that's a boomer, but is super worthed, the story and the world that the mangake creates is fascinating and even if the whole story is not over, there are many arcs finished so you'll have enough on your plate, actuallyy if you think about it , iits setuation is not worse than Berserk's whose mangaka died right before the end. In this caso, we are stuck in the beggining of an ark, but the rest of the story (about 103) apisodes, which I saw on anime, they are really AMAZING, it's a good experience.

Fantastic question, unfortunately, I don’t exactly have an answer.
From what I know there was never a definitive answer as to how they survived, but if I were to speculate, it would more than likely be a combined effort of Ravens Geno Breaker putting up an energy shield/Reece’s Geno Saurer acting as a giant meat shield. It didn’t look like Hiltz was aiming directly at them either so maybe he just kinda missed? Over confidence maybe?

Honestly, what you're describing isn't called the "antagonist." Any villain in a franchise is, by definition, an antagonist. What you're describing is what's known as the "rival." A specific type of antagonist that's made as a foil to the protagonist.
