  • What made Zoids Chaotic Century so good? From its awesome Zoids like the Blade Liger and Geno Breaker, to it's great characters and fantastic war story, Zoids Chaotic Century may not be the best anime out there, but it has a lot going for it.
    I hope you all enjoy the video and if you did, a like and subscribe is always appreciated, and don't hesitate to leave a comment down below.

    This is a review of Zoids Chaotic Century, and here's a quick synopsis:
    Zoids: Chaotic Century is set in the far reaches of the Milky Way, on the planet Zi. On Zi, there are metallic life-forms known as Zoids, which possess powerful fighting capabilities. Throughout the recent history of the series, Zoids have been used as weapons in an ongoing war between the Helic Republic and Guylos Empire.
    The series follows the story of Van Flyheight, a teenage boy who discovers a mysterious girl named Fiona, and an Organoid named Zeke.

    Hope you all enjoyed another Zoids video, I got plenty more coming in the future as well as videos based on different series and games coming too!
    Typically I’d upload once a month but I’m trying to push that to 2 a month and potentially more frequently in the future, I don’t get a lot of time to make these but if you’re all enjoying them I’m more than happy to try and push more videos out!
    Thanks for watching.

    I appreciate how Chaotic Century managed to keep a mostly serious tone and didn't dumb itself down too much for the audience. It's still a war story and it's clear the stakes of the story are high. The dub isn't perfect but they didn't shy away from the gritty reality of war.

      Greatsaiyakirby exactly! The Zoids themselves and the awesome fights drew me in as a kid, but the overall themes surrounding war and it’s characters are what makes me appreciate Chaotic Century so much as an adult.
      As I grew up with the Dub I do prefer it, and one thing I liked is that Van was 17 in the dub as oppose to 14 in the sub, it’s a small detail but him being those few years older suits the character a lot better in my opinion.

      @@Viseak Glad you think so, given when the anime came out the CGI on the Zoids is groundbreaking. The Zoids move with a real weight to them and they feel massive and imposing.
      Like take the Dinosaur King anime that came out about a decade later, another anime based around a toyline. Despite the advantage of time, the Dinosaurs depicted with CGI look much worse, the Dinosaurs move in slow-motion and look weightless and floaty. It's a testament to Chaotic Century and New Century Zero that the Zoid CGI is superior to Fuzors which had the benefit of time to enhance the CGI - but we got the opposite. But even Fuzors had better CGI than Dinosaur King.
      I'm glad you prefer the Dub as well, I'm definitly a Dub guy when it comes to anime, though Sub purists will insist Dubs are inferior. The way I see it, it's a different approach to telling what's overall the same story, and some things simply do not translate from Japanese to English. And the aging up of Van makes it more believable he could become a Zoid pilot with those extra 3 years life experience.
      I don't know if you've seen Avatar but I get a similar feel to Zoids Chaotic Century. Given both take place in a war, but neither side is wholly good or wholly bad. You have the wide-eyed idealist protagonist, the animal sidekick, the team who become something of a family, and the aloof, moody rival. But they team up with the heroes to take down the real villain.

    • @Viseak
      @Viseak  3 года назад +2

      To this day it’s hard to believe how good the Zoids CGI was for it’s time, I think it’s aged really well and the only thing you start to notice after a while is reused scenes like the blade liger running for example but as a kid I definitely never noticed that haha
      I’m generally more of a Sub guy if I’m perfectly honest but I’m definitely not a purist, I’ll watch a Dub if it’s good and of course if it’s nostalgic to me, as I grew up with Zoids in the English Dub it just feels unnatural to hear the Sub voices.
      I have Avatar yes it’s a fantastic show and I can see the parallels between them, personally as much as I like Zuko, I find Raven a lot more interesting, and the fact he never truly becomes good and basically just fights against a common enemy in tandem with everyone else is pretty different from Zuko joining the gang. Although I do admit while it would’ve been kinda nice to see Raven interact with everyone and apologise etc, I feel like it’s just not in his character to do it, granted he did change a lot by the end of the series so hey maybe he did have some regrets and remorse for what he’s done.

    • @PlanetZoidstar
      @PlanetZoidstar 3 года назад +1

      @@Viseak Yeah, especially when you consider that good CGI is expensive and TV CGI is never going to hold up to Movie CGI. And Chaotic Century debuted in 1999, when CGI was still in its infancy, and Japan especially is not known for good CGI because they place alot of value and emphasis on traditional animation. Look at any anime that incorporates CGI and 9/10 it looks terrible. Like early 90s terrible. So for Zoids CGI to look as good as it did when it came out is a small miracle. And I totally can agree that certain shots like the Blade Liger extending the blades being recycled ALOT can be repetitive, but it's a cool shot and if you're going to reuse animation to cut corners, it should be pleasing to the eye.
      I know what you mean, I'll watch a Sub if the option of a Dub is not there, and to each their own which is the better way to enjoy anime.
      I'm glad you see the parallels, which I am sure are entirely coincidental. The scene where Van frees Zeke and Fiona from the facility reminds me of Katara and Sokka freeing Aang from the iceberg, in that this is the inciting incident that kicks the main plot of the series into motion, giving the main characters the overarching goal of the series to pursue.
      I agree too that Raven is a great antagonist and rival, though he doesn't develop or change as much as Zuko does, he's an effective opponent for Van and he's got enough going on to keep him interesting. And Raven is easily one of the best, if not the best Zoid pilot in the show, you know when he's onscreen, it's gonna grab your attention and there's going to be some serious destruction.
      I'm cool too with Raven never really reforming or amending his ways, it makes his character more tragic in a sense, especially since he loses Shadow. Like his refusal to open up to others and insistence on doing things his way (until he and Van team up against the Death Saurer) ultimately cost him his only friend. Like you can be the best Zoid pilot on the planet with a mighty Zoid, but you won't necessarily have a happy ending if you live primarily to fight and be the best.

    Characters , story , the military concept and differences between the two mayor nations ( one being an monarchy and the other being a republic state) the ancient culture and ruins of zoidians , the direction on battles and CGI was amazing back then . And the rivalry between Raven and Van was one of the best ever made in anime history.
    Writters cared about other characters besides the main ones.( even Viola sister having her moment ) .
    For me still the best mecha until this day and by far the best Zoid season ( well , Guardian force was better , but it's the same world and plot so i don't count it as different seasons) and it was kinda Dark and really serious at times ( this is the main reason i put down New century compared to Chaotic century. Aside the conflicts being something from the past , some characters were just stupid as hell.. ) and well , those are the reasons i love this series so much.
    Ohh , Raven and Lizzye , those two made this series at least 5 times better. all hail the ancient zoidians!!

    • @Viseak

      Chaotic Century/Guardian Force was just done so well and it was in a sweet spot where the west wasn’t censoring every little thing like violence and guns so it’s still mature enough to stand on its own legs as an anime, while also being light hearted enough and flashy on the surface to appeal to a younger audience.
      It’s also so different watching the show as a kid compared to as an adult.
      With Genesis I honestly love it but agree it just wasn’t as good as CC was at least in my eyes.

Guylos Empire's Prime Minister Gunther Prozen actually has a similar arc in Battle Stories representation of the events albeit altered for CC as they didn't want to convolute the story with 10-20 years of Zoids backstories.

    Greetings! I grew up when the first original Zoids came out in 1982 and was a huge fan as it was one of the earliest tastes of Japan we got in the U.S. in the world of toys. I enjoyed that entire run until it ended in 1990, although many of the models never came here to the states.
    I admit I don't know anything about Zoids in regard to the 1998 stuff, such as the anime, manga or when Zoids saw a "second wind" and came out with more models. I actually just re-discovered them again through the impressive HMM model kid line, (which does for Zoids what the Masterpiece line does for Transformers!) That said, my main interest in HMM has been in recreations of the original early Zoids.
    Zoids and Transformers came out at a time when Japanese anime and culture was NOT accessible like it is today in the West. You couldn't just "turn on the tv" to see it. In fact, the powers that be here. went out of their way to censor or hide anything they deemed inappropriate or too "foreign," which was very common in early NES games for example. (Just look at the cover art for the early Megaman games. Often anything that looked too "anime" was removed, as well as changing Japanese names to American names, as is what happened in River City Ransom.)
    Sure, there were earlier attempts to bring Japanese inspired toys over, like Shogun Warriors, and Diaclone, but it wasn't until Transformers that it became successful. For that reason Transformers is very special to me, acting as that "stepping stone" to greater things to come. (Zoids was the same way) With the success of Transformers and Zoids, it likely led to Mattel bringing over MUSCLE keshi figures a few years later. Even though the Kinnekuman anime they were based on didn't come over here, the toys themselves were unchanged from the Japanese versions, in all their anime inspired glory! (The 8 bit Nintendo hit shortly around this time too of course.)
    Back then the only was to see anime was through fan subs at clubs etc. Importing uncensored SNES games and getting them to play was another matter altogether.
    So under these conditions, you can imagine that anime and Japanese culture would bring a certain "forbidden fruit effect" for so many of us who grew up at that time. TO THIS DAY anime is INCREDIBLY special to me with all these aforementioned hoops we had to jump through. It all led to a life long love of anime from everything from Gundam to Death Note, Full Metal Alchemist, Madoka Magica, Lie in April, K-On etc to modern iterations like Promised Neverland and Attack on Titan.
    That said, my digging around on YT led me to your channel, and particularly your video about the Zoids anime. I honestly assumed it wouldn't hold up as a series to the adult demographic being based on a toyline. But it sounds like it's actually a pretty awesome anime from your video that is inclusive to the original adult Zoids fans!
    Transformers too went on to make some fantastic more mature content. The 1986 cartoon for starters had a serious edge to it, actual death and swearing etc. I have a lot of love for the live action Bumblebee, and I've heard nothing but AMAZING things about the IDH comics, especially "More Than Meets the Eye."
    I noticed the back of the Blu ray for the Zoids anime listed it at "G," so I didn't have high hopes. But thanks to your video, I'll be sure to keep an eye open for it. Thanks!!!!!!! 😀

  • @drnewbek7567
    @drnewbek7567 3 года назад +2

    It was my favourite anime for a long time too. Definitely aimed at kids, and the simplistic and sometimes awkward dialogue in the English dub (especially in the earlier episodes) is a symptom of that. However, the multiple threads in the plot and the depiction of the complexity of war is quite developed for what’s basically a kids series. There were plenty of emotional moments, pretty much in every episodes, which really endeared the series to me when I was younger.
    It’d be really fun if there was another series, either set between Chaotic Century and New Century Zero or evening a prequel that looks at the war prior to the ceasefire at the start of the series or even the decline of the Ancient Zoidian civilisation/arrival of humans on Planet Zi. Did they ever actually explain where Zoids come from (aside from Zoid Eve) Are they manufactured do they just grow somewhere?

    • @Viseak
      @Viseak  3 года назад

      It definitely did go pretty heavy into the war themes for a kids show hey.
      Another series in this same timeline would be great, whether that be a prequel to chaotic century, something in between chaotic and new century or even a sequel to new century would be great.
      It’s never explained in the anime regarding where the Zoids come from, besides them being bio mechanical life forms native to planet Zi, which more than likely were modified by the humans who migrated there in order to pilot them, my guess is the ancient Zoidians never piloted Zoids in the same way as humans did due to them simply fusing to the Zoid core with the help of an organoid, this is pretty evident as the only Zoid really preserved in time is the original Death Saurer which didn’t have a cockpit of any sorts.
      So I guess humans basically came over and metaphorically chucked a saddle on these wild mecha beasts which eventually were used for wars.

      I wish there was a bit more from Chaotic Century, maybe even just an epilogue to see how the characters were doing in 5-10 years after the completion of the series.
      I would’ve even loved to see a show set at some point between Chaotic and New Century with a bit of fan service to tie the two series together even more, maybe something to explain why the Berserk Fury was in a giant metal box on the ocean floor?
      But who knows, I doubt they’ll ever revitalise the original series, they seem pretty set on continuing with the Wild Line, and hey Wild Zero isn’t bad by any means so that isn’t a huge problem, I just miss the old Zoids as I’m sure many others here do as well.

    I wonder if Zoids could ever try something anime-wise like Pokemon Origins but where they have some major battles from the Original Battle Story such as the Orudios/Gilvader battle, or the Deathsaurer/Mad Thunder, or perhaps when the Dark Continent Zoids, with their eerie green glow, first showed up, maybe?

    • @Viseak
      @Viseak  3 года назад

      Now that, is a great idea.
      Just 5-10 episodes filled with pure OVA action from the major battles in the battle story that never got any spotlight. I would watch the hell out of that and it would be a fantastic way to boost up the series a bit.

    I agree that is it kind of implied that the Empire is at least the lesser good between the kingdoms (mostly because of Prozen). But to be honest, because Prozen was so ambitious, I think he would have tried to pull what he tried to pull no matter where he was, it just so happens that he was in the Empire.

I want to see whats going to happen with Raven would he be a pro/antagonist. • @Viseak
      @Viseak  3 года назад +1

      Cipher422 yeah I agree the size and cockpits was a huge thing that made the Zoids feel so oppressive, badass, and almost more realistic akin to driving for example, you wouldn’t ride a car right?
      If you haven’t already I’d recommend checking out Wild Zero, it’s directed by the same guy who made Chaotic Century and the story has been great from what I’ve watched so far, the scale of the Zoids is still smaller than what we’re used too however they at least have actual cockpits again.
      In addition to this, in the new Wild Zero Switch Game coming out in Japan (not the one we’re getting here in the west next month but the ‘sequel’ which hopefully we’ll get eventually) they’ve actually brought back some of the original Zoids such as the Blade Liger and Geno Breaker which is amazing to see in a modern Zoids game
