    I just opened a Wilderness Trail Family Reserve Cask Wheated store pick; ~115p and it absolutely blew me away. I've had most of the WT lineup, minus the htf higher age statement products (7yr/8yr) and just couldnt believe how good it was. I cant find much info on it but it has to be at least a 7yr. I immediately went and got a backup. Im really looking forward to what these guys put out in the future. Cheers.

      Wilderness Trail is doing some great things. I have a couple as well including the wheater and found it to be complex and delicious. Really opened up about a week after uncorking for me. For this review I think that's sometimes the breaks for a brand when you're putting a SiB against standard consistent production runs.

  • @OttoBoy
    @OttoBoy Год назад

    I’ve only tried Wilderness Trail and Maker’s Mark standard line up plus some of the experimental barrels - not the 101.
    Agree n Wilderness Trail but it’s got its place for easy weeknights for me. Wilderness Trail seems to often have pronounced grain forward flavors. Thinking of their ryes in particular.
    Maker’s was easy to ID when the musty character was mentioned. All Maker’s that I’ve tried has at least some of that musty “frunk” in the nose which also rolls into the palate - not something I prefer.
    Weller anything is allocated and heavily marked up around my area. Full Proof runs around $200-$250 if it’s on a shelf. Special Reserve is around $70-$100. Don’t remember the Antique 107 price. Not paying those FOMO prices so…
    Keeping an eye out for that Bardstown wheater. I’ve seen it posted by a local shop, in their “Coming Soon” page. Almost all Bardstown Discovery series have been great as has been most of their collaborations. Been very luke warm on their Fusion series - 4-6? But hoping as their own stocks age more that this will show in future Fusion expressions.
    Someone above mentioned Old Elk double wheater - I second that. 107 proof, it has some classic wheater character but also has a tempered assertiveness and great mouthfeel. Surprisingly showed up at a local Costco for~$89.

    I agree somewhat with Mr. Cheung except I would demand a rematch that includes my favorite daily bourbon, the regular Old Elk Wheated Bourbon (not the Wheated Whiskey). Old Elk Wheated Bourbon is a delicious sleeper that deserves more publicity. It has the chops, being made by former MGP master distiller, Greg Metz. Give it a try. You won’t regret it. Also I love what they are doing at Wilderness Trail. What a back story.

    Question for you Jason - I had a fantastic 34y single grain from Strathclyde a few months ago and believe one of the reasons I enjoyed it so much was the wheat content (plus the age...)? I am looking for a similar taste profile in a wheat forward bourbon and don't know if this is realistic, and if you have any suggestions? I really liked the buttery slightly biscuit/savory palate and was curious if you could point me in the right direction? Cheers!

    Ha, as I was watching you describe “very wheat forward” I actually thought to myself that was the Wilderness Trail. I have a bottle myself and half to admit that I’m not a huge fan myself. I think it’s a bit overrated and don’t get why it’s so expensive. Imo regular Larceny slaps it around and it’s basically half the price.

  • @TheNewRevolution
    @TheNewRevolution Год назад

    I knew the young tasting wheat forward one was Wilderness Trail. Every bottle I've ever tried from Wilderness Trail has tasted young and grainy. I've tried several. For me, it's really expensive whisky that just doesn't cut it. I will say that they have a unique profile that you don't get with a lot of other whisky....it's just that I don't find it enjoyable. Because it's very grain forward, it always tastes young to me. It's one that you may want to try just to see if you like their profile because, like I said, it is unique. I'd be interested to know what kind of char they use on their barrels. If I had to guess, I'd say it's not a heavy char, but I could be wrong.

      @Best_Served_Neat_On_Ice Год назад

    • @TheNewRevolution
      @TheNewRevolution Год назад

      @Be There Again Productions I was not aware everything they did was 4 years old but it makes sense. I tried a bottle when they first came out in Kentucky in 2018(I think). It almost tasted like moonshine to me. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't good. I'd definitely age it longer or change the barrel char. But I guess they don't need my advice. If they're putting out younger whiskey because they can't keep up with demand, I guess they're doing quite well. Apparently, a lot of people really like it. It wouldn't be the first time my taste clashes with a popular product. I don't care a lot for a lot of the 4 Roses releases. They have a floral note in them that I don't like. Everyone else seems to love it. I've been drinking Bourbon and Scotch for almost 25 years. I live in Kentucky and have almost tried them all. I guess you can't like every distillery's products.
