To be clear, both these heads are cast foam latex, then flocked, just like Miss Piggy. They are later than the era when the heads were hand-sculpted polyurethane - that was only a couple of years, when they first debuted on The Muppet Show. When the show became massively popular, and Muppets also started making movies, the heads had to be endlessly repeatable because they were getting a lot of use. Hand carving polyurethane is incredibly time consuming and impossible to duplicate precisely absolutely every time, so sculpts were made in clay and molds produced so they could be cast in foam latex and be consistent. I don't know how the heck anybody got hold of these in any legitimate way - when Muppets are retired from active use, they either get refurbed for museum display, or destroyed so no one can copy them. It's hard to imagine how someone got their hands on these without actually stealing them...
When Adam said there must be like hundreds of these muppet replicas I laughed cause they only make like a few they have some for back up but not a lot. They do mostly repairs

I can still here the intro in my head. I was too young to know who many of the celebrity guests were as a young child, but I have so many fond memories of the show and just the Muppets in general.

So the first Statler and Waldorf puppets built for the muppet show were hand carved foam. The first miss Piggy was also carved foam. But as the seasons progressed Statler and Waldorf and Piggy were made from cast foam latex and flocked. It was easier to reproduce multiples of the same puppet this way.

It's easy to criticize and tear down because mentally that puts you "above" whatever it is you're talking about. It's harder to talk about something you admire because that means you're putting something above yourself. I love how Adam has absolutely no hesitation when it comes to works of art by truly incredible makers. The world is in such desperate need of that kind of humility. And yeah, the Muppets are absolutely above all of us in every way.

I was the recording engineer for the pilot for the muppet show. It was called "sex & violence with the muppets" I would venture into the studio during breaks & spoke with Jim, Frank and the rest of the puppeteers. The puppet handlers would take the puppetts out of locked cases, fluff the feathers and hair then hand them to the puppeteers.. One set was that of Mt. Rushmore. Even getting super close to it, they seemed to be so real looking. Jim was super nice to tall with.
I met Jim Henson in the most amazing way. My wife and I were visiting Disneyland and had just boarded the train at the main street station. In the distance, I saw Jim Henson walking into the front gates with a guide. We immediately got off the train and followed them at a respectful distance into Fantasyland. We all got in line for the Peter Pan ride. (At that time, he was just signing the Muppets over to the Disney company and they were considering a ride based on the Muppets.) We had a chance to talk with him briefly. What a wonder man! Sadly, this was just a month before he passed. So glad we had the opportunity to meet him.
I was almost offended on behalf of Statler and Waldorf as you talked about them like they were pieces of meat. I half expected them to say "Excuse me! We're RIGHT here!"

The DREAM, wearing a real Muppet! One of the high points of my life was getting to see a Muppet exhibit at the Indianapolis Children's Museum in the early 80s. Kermit and Piggy on bicycles, Sweetums opened up so you could see the interior...it was great!
I was only a kid when I watched the Muppet Show but I remember that Miss Piggy varied drastically from episode to episode, especially her eyes. One new Miss Piggy per show, wow!
wow this opened up a string of memories I hadn't thought of in years. a complete tangent of thought unstringing from grade 3 music class singing Rainbow Connection. but it shows how iconic Muppets are as a touchstone for so many people.
Back in the late 80s, a friend of mine in NYC worked for Henson. He made a lot of Miss Piggy heads and they were cast (definitely not carved) foam latex with flocking.
Adam learned a good lesson: DON'T DISS PUPPETRY! It takes real talent! Jim Henson left us much too soon. And how cool is it to see the "I Dream of Genie" bottle in the background, there?
Don’t worry there are extensive Henson museum collections at the center for puppetry arts and museum of the moving image, to my knowledge I don’t think there is really a lot of his work in private hands, the family kept most of everything and has donated or lent the items to museums.
@@TribalGuitars that’s also very true, for example the Kermit that’s in the beginning of Adam’s video on the Jim Henson exhibit at the Museum of the Moving Image is very clearly a very early Kermit, the eyes are still half ping pong balls, Kermit as we have known him for most of his history and still today has proprietary eyes that are a little smaller, I believe they’re 35mm as opposed to a ping pong ball’s 40mm but I could be wrong.
I just wanna say how much i loved The Mask and how cool it was to see it in the background. Also how weird it was just to see the severed heads of two characters i loved and adored as a real little kid
I don't know if it's been mentioned already, but Henson are very protective of their puppets - i.e. they never sell them. A Kermit puppet was famously stolen from the set of Treasure Island, and has never appeared again, and a non-screen used Rizzo has been on eBay some years back, but never have any main Muppet Show characters been for sale officially like this. Also that they are from separate decades (looks like it to me as well) makes me wonder if they were originally obtained as a pair or not. Some of the B-list characters could and would be used for years, so these to may very likely have had screen time together. This is awesome to see. As someone who is interested in all things Muppets & replica building I believe the Statler & Waldorf puppets were foam latex especially from the later seasons of The Muppet Show & onwards. In fact there is pictures of the moulds for them & Miss Piggy online which shows the amount of details in the original sculpts before they are cast & flocked.
I can't take my eyes off the background of these videos. This one has Batman Returns Penguin Banner, Chest and cape, The Mask, Who Framed Roger Rabbit cartoon gun, Ghostbusters dog, Ghostbusters 2 painting, Troy disc. I would geek the hell out.
Half a million years ago I was in an "Animal crossing" commercial shot At north shore studios North Vancouver. In the sound stage next to us was the sets for a muppet Christmas special no work was going on but you could see the sets they where fantastic. While we where on lunch someone was moving one of the Kermet puppets next to us. A few of us said "Hi Kermet" then after that they where all covered. the other cool thing was the person that made the heads we where using for animal crossing also worked of JR Puff-N-stuff. The heads where finished the night before still the smell of glue in them. It was a fun day.

Half a million years ago I was in an "Animal crossing" commercial shot At north shore studios North Vancouver. In the sound stage next to us was the sets for a muppet Christmas special no work was going on but you could see the sets they where fantastic. While we where on lunch someone was moving one of the Kermet puppets next to us. A few of us said "Hi Kermet" then after that they where all covered. the other cool thing was the person that made the heads we where using for animal crossing also worked of JR Puff-N-stuff. The heads where finished the night before still the smell of glue in them. It was a fun day.

I legitimately had to pause the video several times so I could geek out. One of my favorite people got to handle two of my favorite Muppets. And he's a bigger Muppet nerd than I am.
