Its .5 milli-amps. I know this because I once found out what 12kv at 30 milli-amps feels like like across the chest. And yeah, my heart, it didn't beat right for 3 DAYS!
And if you think dog poo is closest, you've never seen pig poo. Like, the big pigs at the fair. Looks and smells exactly like human poo. I don't work the fair anymore.
really miss Mythbusters as a show, in hindsight it helped a generation think more critically about these "myths" and really encouraged kids like me to be more skeptical and curious and not accepting things at face value
I suck at math and after watching MythBusters I still suck at math, but it was cool to see how they applied mathematics to figure everything out. It made more sense to me watching it in action instead of trying to figure it out from my textbook.
In hindsight during it's run it was used, at least to some degree, by teachers for math, science, engineering and tech or STEM. And there was real interest from a segment of kids and of course parents. Fast forward to today and it feels like almost complete apathy on those topics to the point where people almost seem to have the view point of something approaching the early 19th century.
My son was born in 2001, from a toddler on he watched the show. Even talking grandpa into doing some experiments. As a teen he asked for the whole serious on DVD. It was the only thing he watch. Picked up on Grant’s robotics. Started a robotics battle bot club in HS and college, now 22. The club in HS he started he is now a mentor for.
My biomedical engineering design students built a bidet for spinal cord injured patients, and needed a way to test it. Somehow, they managed to contact your show, and Jamie shared his recipe with them. I consider that our brush with greatness.
Omfg I love that. Love the quest for "the formula" too- in both cases, just not smthn you would ever ordinarily think about. It just seems so simple, but then I imagine your students learned a lot about thinking a lot about things no one else thinks about, from that 😂
My favorite myth was the barrel-pulse jet. I liked it because, unlike most myths, Adam and Jamie were willing to admit that they were defeated and called in a rocket scientist to finish the build off.
I just lost my dad 6 days ago due to liver cancer. One of my fondest memories was back around 2004 -2010 watching mythbusters with him. Everytime the show was on mybdad would call me into the room and we would watch the show together and we both enjoyed every second of it. We didnt care about reruns or older episodes because we loved the humor and passion dedicated to the show. My dad was 73 when he passed on the 29th of august 2023 and i have found myself coming back to the old things we use to enjoy together and of course one of the first things i came back to was mythbusters.
I know your feeling. My father passed on the 28th at 84. A couple weeks prior I showed him an episode of Tested. The one about the fractal vise. He was always a tinkerer and thought it was really nifty. It was one of the last times I spoke to him. I can still remember his smile when he saw it. Stay strong, things get better every day.
Hey Sir, I'm sorry for you loss, I also would watch mythbusters religiously with my dad on Saturdays, was an essential part of my existence as a 10 year old.
Former law enforcement here. The Taser was the most painful 5 seconds of my life. For those unfamiliar but willing to hear, the electricity travels through your body by completing a circuit between the two probes (the barbs on the ends of the wire that are shot into your skin). This is to say that you are electrocuted across a span of your body and not just at the barbs, as is a common misconception. The average spread at the average shooting distance is around 1-2 feet and should be to the subject's back. This, assuming a good connection, is generally enough to incapacitate an individual who is otherwise not responding to verbal direction and has escalated the encounter to such a point there is reasonable risk of bodily harm or death to them or to others. Taser exposure as officers in training was not mandatory but recommended, and we had a somewhat sadistic instructor. Our first cadet received the Taser via shot to the back. The rest of us (I was second) received our exposure via alligator clips, to save on shooting 50 Taser cartridges in one day (again, for those unfamiliar, you can deliver repeated shocks via already-deployed probes). I was given one alligator clip to my right shoulder and the other alligator clip to my left ankle. I still have the scars a decade later. To complete the circuit, the 50,000v (low amperage, as you observe, though there has been at least one confirmed death) had to travel across the entirety of my body to complete its circuit. It's the feeling of complete paralyzation combined with high-voltage electric shock. Every nerve between those connectors is on fire and non responsive. You are someone else's plaything until the five seconds are over. I wouldn't do it again, though many of my compatriots have since had repeat exposures. I give you the respect due for not caving to peer pressure to "get the shot" for TV. Finally, to answer the question of why cadets are often given a Taser (and CS gas/OC gas) exposure, there is an important justification: So that officers understand the pain they would inflict by deploying these non-lethal measures. Having experienced it helps instill empathy in an otherwise healthy psyche, which hopefully reduces the incidence of unnecessary deployments. Be Well and Be Kind to Each Other, - Chaz
That instructor doesn't sound like a great instructor. It's possible to appear sadistic to get the most out of the trainees, but that was perilously close, perhaps over the line of torture
@@dawnmoriarty9347 I appreciate the kindness I perceive in your reply. I should acknowledge the importance of greater context that is beyond this medium (it's easy to draw battle lines on the Internet with incomplete information). What I mean to say is that my comment hopefully describes the experience of a Taser exposure and supports Adam's decision -- rather than being a vehicle for sympathy or to condemn a man who spent decades saving lives and imparting his experience to the next generation. He always did what he believed was best to make us strong enough to survive when the lives of others depended on our actions. Much like military training, there is a fine line to walk between asking too little or too much. I survived, and my empathy grew. I was made an example of, as it were, but I was also expected to be an example to my peers by virtue of rank. Thank you for your thoughtfulness, - Chaz
@@wellfuckyoumr That's completely fair. TL; DR: Former peace officer. Tasered during training, had a non-typical exposure, found the experience painful and unsettling. Kudos to Adam for knowing his comfort level and not falling to peer pressure for television. Be Well, - Chaz
The discussion of what constitutes death reminds me of the idea that when hypothermia is involved you don't pronounce death until the bodies warm and dead because of the crazy stories of chilled bodies coming back from near total inactivity.
I always think about that! It’s actually why my department won’t allow you to call death in the field unless it is super super obvious because of the different crazy situations where someone was for sure “dead” and came back.
There was a parachutist who got sucked up to 30k feet by a storm and survived severe oxygen deprivation because of the cold up there. Stories like that make me think that maybe we will be able to freeze people like in Futurama one day.
I love hearing Adam talk about Mythbusters and some of the behind-the-scenes info about the various episodes. He is a gifted storyteller in addition to being an amazing builder/creator.
Adam Savage, if you’re reading this, I can’t say how much I enjoyed watching you on the original Mythbusters. It was amazing to see you and Jamie bust, confirm, or prove a myth is plausible.
Right, I forgot there was that poor spin off with the persons who replaced Grant and the women during her pregnancy (sorry for forgetting her name) that failed for Discovery+ after it was pulled from TV after the first season and creating the streaming service that was tanking on TV anyhow. The one they started in 2018 and was done by 2020, not due to Corona Virus but due to the ratings was finished after that season.
Adam is just the very best. His joy at the opportunity to point out that -40°F is equivalent to -40°C is just so great to see, especially because it's a very "know-it-all" kind of moment. Nine in ten people pointing that out would come off as know-it-alls, but not Adam. He's just delighted about that little quirk, and he wants to share it, period. There's not a condescending cell in that guy's body.
And for the rest of my life I'll never forget that fact. When he said it I thought to myself oh that's interesting, but I think in part at least it's his genuine enthusiasm that boosted my attention. Adam Savage may be my 4th favorite person on the planet only being beat by my wife and children.
It's currently below -40 where I live (after wind chill), so I'm quite familiar with this fact 😅☃️ (though I do still get a similar joy of quirk sharing it with long distance friends)
Adam seems like the kind of person that everyone is already best friends with. Such a magnetic and genuine personality…which I think is a big reason for the show’s success.
For sure. The show was originally just going to be Jamie, but he didn’t think it would be too boring with just him. He had worked with Adam on some commercials and asked him to join. I think that was a good call.
The height of the curve for me were the years after Grant joined and you guys had two teams and tons of myths to do - brilliant television in every way and I still enjoy watching my old Mythbusters DVDs
"The closer you look, the blurrier thing get" This is deeper and more philosophical than I had realized on first listening. I legitimately had to stop and wrap my head around this. Words of wisdom from the Savage himself.
Pretty sure that's the exact same thing he said about binary sex and gender. Words of wisdom indeed. (just to be clear: yes I'm 100% serious, and Adam Savage is a champion)
This is an important thing to understand in general. Zeno's Arrow and some analogues thereof apply to a lot more than most of us realize. Real (specific) binaries are pretty hard to come by.
This really is true of just about anything we look into in science. What counts as a living creature? What counts as a star or planet? Are the bacteria in our guts independent commensalist creatures or are they just part of us? What counts as a multicellular organism in the first place? If someone is selling you a simple view of things then either they haven't thought things through very carefully or they're selling you a product or religion
@@patheddles4004 yeah except thats not even remotely true. The closer you look, the more absolute it becomes. The entire gender debate hinges on keeping things abstract and unquantifiable. This was settled science until it was politicized and we started making scientists jobless for disagreeing with what is essentially, twitter users.
I literally think Adam and Jaime, even if they didn't get along, did more to educate and develop people than almost anyone else. Responsible pop science, presented in an understandable format, with great visual effects, and an enjoyable dynamic (maybe especially when you could see the rough edges). I miss the hell out of this show, my children have seen every episode, and our discussions together have helped them grow to be thoughtful, curious, and question-capable people. I love it!
Mythbusters was one of the finest shows I've had the privilege of watching and being a fan of. To me in many ways it was the grand finale of the Discovery channel I remember as a child, pure educational nerd fuel. I deeply appreciate all the years you guys put in. The Mythbusters squad will always be part of my TV Extended Family.
As someone who’s cousin once convinced them the cattle fence was off, when it in fact was NOT, highly don’t recommend messing around with the electric cattle fence.
Adam's comment about some things in James Bond just being too impossible reminds me of how badly I wanted a Harry Potter episode of Mythbusters when I was little, and then realizing that all the myths would be, "magic doesn't exist, so no, we can't do that." 😅
I imagine there are "MageBusters" in the Harry Potter universe, dedicated to exploring questions like: "What if you did say "wingardium levi-oh-SA" instead of "wingardium levi-OH-sa"?
I think the taser thing is extremely fair, especially with the heart condition involved. Police officers don't even get tased as part of their training unless they volunteer. Most people forget tasers are still legally considered a deadly weapon.
Agreed. I didn't even realize he had a heart condition when he first said it and I thought "Meh, that's fair." I mean, the barbs on those ranged ones are pretty big. As in, you bleed quite a bit just from those.
The usual (but not always) policy for police department is if you haven't received it you dont carry it. Ive been tased for training wouldn't recommend 😂
I really wish after all these years that a definitive complete collection of mythbusters seasons, shows, behind the scenes, and loaded with extras was available on Blu Ray. I hope someday it'll happen! Best show ever!!!
I hate that Discovery rarely ever releases their shows and documentaries to DVD/Blu-ray :( Especially when it comes to the point where those shows or documentaries aren't being aired anymore.
Considering cross-promotion on Discovery, I wonder how much of Mythbusters today would be *debunking* other shows on Discovery and History - like _Ancient Aliens, A Haunting,_ and _NASA's unexplained files._
They're disgusting pander. In different surveys, 40% of US adults believe in ghosts, believe in Strict Creationism (the 6,000 year old universe thing, and believe that dinosaurs are walking around now. The pander is why some of these statistics EXIST. They used to be LOWER.
I usually felt that the cross-promo shows were handled pretty well. It often came across that you (not Jamie so much) were communicating to us, "Yeah, we know this is contrived, but we've gotta keep the lights on and we're going to do our best to get you and us through this together and hopefully have a little fun along the way." Which is the best you can ask for in those situations!
I enjoyed watching the personality changes between you and Jamie over time. In the beginning, the dislike between the two of you was palpable. As time progressed, you were able to get Jamie to laugh and loosen up. I watched every episode and loved your laughter and being okay with failures and loving the successes. Jamie become more likable and the relationship worked better over time. No matter what, your laugh was infectious, in a good way of course. 😂
Adam I love how you speak so honestly and candidly about the show, but also so respectfully to the show. I hope you’re loving your best life! Watching MB as a kid really stimulated my interest in science.
Wow - I never knew Adam had a heart condition. That puts a whole new light on that time when Kari and Tori hooked up the Ark of the Covenant/ancient battery to deliver a shock to him when he touched it as a 'prank.' He was clearly upset with them, on camera - which I could understand even without knowing that context - but knowing it now, that makes it a lot worse!
He didn’t have a heart condition, not then anyways and he didn’t say that he did. The reason he mentioned the phrase “heart condition” is he was saying the medical checkup showed that the condition of his heart was healthy enough that the insurance company was OK with him doing the stunt.
Adam, the dedication you, Jamie and the build crew and everyone else behind the scenes we didn't see that brought Mythbusters to life. Think how many future scientists and engineers you guys have helped get started or even get interested in science. My son started watching the show was he was 5 or so and watched it religiously until it ended and now that he's almost 14 he still watches it when it comes on. He still talks about different myths that were on the show, and has taken engineering classes, loves science and tech and loves to tinker and build and work with whatever he gets his hands on. Some days he starts rambling off with physics, energy, various things that I am glad I know a little bit about. I can tell you that desire and love of all that came from him first watching Mythbusters and now he's watching every science show coming his way on builds, engineering, even hours of "How it's Made" but it all started with Mythbusters, so thank you for all the effort and dedication and no small amount of bodily risk you all did getting that show out for so many years.
Adam is just what you want as a well rounded, curious, calibrated scientist. His excitement is infectious, & take on things - well reasoned. Always great to listen to.
I'm surprised Adam didn't bring up the Ark of the Covenant shock prank as part of the reason for not wanting to get tazed. He knew from THAT experience what it's like to get a really painful, debilitating shock. Once bitten, twice shy! I wonder if there's still some bad blood there, and he doesn't like to bring it up...
I think it's something they don't want to bring up. There's been some drama around the internet not too long ago on it, so I think he's tactfully avoiding picking at that scab.
Being a kid is thinking Jamie was the rational, levelheaded one and Adam was the crazy wildcard. Being an adult is realizing Adam was the rational one and Jamie was the batshit crazy one
I cried real tears of defeat as a 22 year old man when mythbusters stoped. For all of my middle school and high school years my one and only true dream was to be on the myth busters team. I still have not found anything close to a passion for work. That being said, I love you Adam. You were an integral part to the molding of my mind. ❤
The same year that Mythbusters ended, Discovery aired this God-awful documentary on the green anaconda called Eaten Alive. I was breeding snakes at the time, several species from the Amazon rainforest. I watched the documentary, and I was so offended that this fantastic series was no longer being made, and it was being replaced by a sub-par documentary series that I cancelled the entire network from my cable package.
0:23 love how you can see him visibility react, and by the cut in the video you can see it took him a while to remember. Really adds to the authenticity.
Thanks for being a formative part of my childhood, Adam! You, Jamie, Tori, Kari, and the late, great Grant Imahara were a driving force behind my love of science. "I reject your reality and substitute my own" is the best quote from the show
1:50 Yep, been there done that 3 years ago. I'm told they did CPR for 40 minutes before they got me to a hospital where they got my heart beating again. I was told they shocked me 3 times before the ambulance left for the hospital, but I don't know how many times I got shocked total, but I kept going back into V-fib. I guess I wasn't completely without oxygen the whole time, due to the CPR, but they told my family to be prepared to make a tough decision the next day, e.g. pull the plug if I was brain dead. But, the EEG showed brain activity and I woke up the day after that. Other than some mild aphasia and some forgetfulness, I came back to normal for mid-40s.
As long as you are fibrillating they can still do something, but once that stops you are done. They can’t do anything for you. Edit: ie they can’t shock you from a flat line. They can give you Drugs to attempt to get you back into a shockable rhythm, but a flat line isn’t one of them.
OMG. Watching Adam is such a pleasure. So many interests, so much knowledge. No wonder he's just a ball of energy! I always say, "OMG, there's something bigger than Phil." What fun to go back to these after a hard week.
Man Mythbusters was like a core part of my childhood. I’d watch it with my brother and our grandpa for hours. So it’s really fun to listen to Adam talk about the behind the scenes of it
One of my most enduring memories from watching Mythbusters was seeing just how pissed off you were, Adam when Tori and Kari tricked you into touching the wings of the cherubim on their replica of the Ark of the Covenant...giving you a 10,000 volt shock...right across your heart!!! The restraint that you displayed for the cameras...as good as it was, nevertheless betrayed the true, inner rage you were feeling, which was plain to see in your face's expression. I am convinced that the scene was MUCH MORE INTENSE after the cameras stopped recording!
@@Alex-zi1nb Yeah, Grant wasn't a regular cast member at that point. When they did the special episode showing how upset Adam was, they mostly edited out Scottie.
Longtime Mythbusters fan here, happy memories of my daughter and I watching you guys (she's a Science Teacher now). I don't blame you one bit for passing on getting tasered, even without the entire 'What Is Death?' thing. Actually, given all the weird stuff that you guys subjected yourselves to over the years, I am rather amazed that nobody ever developed full-on superpowers of some kind.
My dad was a deckhand on a charter fishing boat for a company that runs off the Washington State coast. Sig and his family actully went on a fishing trip through the same company. I worked for this same company years after that had happened and I can tell you two things for certain: 1) If the guys on the boat (or in the company at all, really) think you're a jerk, they will let you know.....and they will let everyone they come in contact with (that is willing to listen) their feelings about you too. 2) Not one person there had a negative thing to say about Sig or his family! Nothing but praise. 👍 that tells me that he must really be a great person
I just wanted to say how much I loved this format of answering questions and just chatting to the camera. You come across as the king of person I could spend hours just chatting with you and never get bored Thank you for this and please do more.
As someone who has been through all the training classes for these types of things, I can absolutely say that they are not considered, even by the manufacturers and trainers, to be Non-Lethal. They are classified, in class and by both departments I have worked with, to be Less-Lethal. They are less likely to cause death, but they might. As far as what constitutes death? If you wake back up and you are still legally married, you werent dead.
Absolutely. Less-lethal options are a fantastic alternative to straight-up lethal force where that would otherwise be justified, but I have a really big problem with their routine use for purposes like pain compliance. And don't even get me started on deliberately injurious usage, like bean bag rounds fired directly at unprotected faces at close range.
9:49 I spent almost ten years running CNC lasers that could cut through steel, and I know exactly how much room a laser that can cut through steel can take up.
Adam, you and Jamie are my heroes. You were with me when I decided to make a career in science and you were there for me through the entire beautifully agonizing journey of getting my PhD. Now my son watches you and I can see the same sparkle in his eye that you gifted me. Thank you !
I loved the original show with Adam and Jamie and certainly welcomed Grant (RIP) into the fold. You guys gave my science nerd son many ‘ideas’ and busy hours…. good thing that neighbors got used to the explosions in my backyard instead of calling the Police. They just shrugged and said ‘that must be so-and-so doing his experiments’. 😊
I know you’ll probably never really see this, but I wanted to thank you for always staying humble and teaching us all. Myth busters taught so many and you could have just gone on your merry way, but you are always there to answer anything you can about not only the show, but science. We love you for that.
It would. That is already fact, not a myth. "Would a small slot full of highly combustible fluffy fabrics light on fire if left in a high heat capacity machine was left running" the awnser seems obvious.
@@KoiSplash-wk5tmI think a better question would be: how many cycles until it actually catches fire. Probably too many dryer brands and other factors that would make the results skewed or something. Still would be cool to do.
@@Warlock_Sack depends on the clothes type, my jeans and clothing are small and usually lightweight but my 6'7 300 pound brother shoves like 4 pairs of jeans into our dryer and halfway through the load that lint trap is trying to get pushed out, the lint trap has a layer about an inch or two thick with not light able to get through.
Let me just tell you now that it will. I did clean the filter every time but apparently the inside of the machine needed cleaning because it caught fire
I wanted to thank you for all your work you and Jamie did on MythBusters I really enjoyed that show along with the supporting calves and I really miss the marathons but I enjoyed this little segment you did especially since it's my birthday I used to enjoy going home this time of year and watching the marathons on Discovery Channel thank you again for everything you did with Busters you made science so fun to learn
That first one reminded me of the 'Babylonian Battery' story, because of how upset Adam got over getting unexpectedly zapped. Now I don't know if he knew he had a heart condition back then, or the team simply didn't know it... but watching that it really felt like a line had been crossed.
The one thing I remember from the Deadliest Catch episode was when you guys tested the effectiveness of the power nap. If I remember correctly, you guys put yourselves to work on the boats with less than 10 minutes sleep between shifts. I always think of this whenever I'm very tired but have work to do, wondering if just a few minutes of sleep could be enough to reinvigorate me.
This helped me fix my sleep problems as a young adult. I just remembered that closing my eyes and relaxing is important and it’s not perfect but it’s better than worrying about everything I have to do tomorrow and not relaxing at all
@@Michael_Hunt That was part of the results the Mythbusters found. They FELT worse, but their mental capacity was actually BETTER. It was surmised this may be why sailors swear so much.
Whenever I see an interview with one of the cast members from Friends, it turns to questions about Friends, and I think, "I bet they wish they didn't have to always answer questions about Friends." I mean, they loved their time on the show, but they have other work, and I bet they'd like to talk about that. Watching Adam talk about Mythbusters is kind of like that. He has an endless supply of stories he can tell us all, but I wonder, what is it that Adam wants us to ask him about?
I was just thinking the same thing. I do get the sense that he honestly loves talking about MB. Whether that's because he knows we still love hearing about it, or for his own pleasure I can't say.
@@mrmeestah6177 It's not his own time. This is at least one of possibly many jobs for him. He gets paid to do this, either by RUclips revenue or something else. That's not a bad thing, though. But this isn't his free time.
I honestly had to stifle my laughter (cause of the time) on the Jamie and the 'hitting the fan' story. My maternal grandfather loved the movie Caddyshack, and his favourite scene that would make him laugh, without fail, was the entire 'Baby Ruth' sequence - so had he wandered in while watching and that aired - he probably would have started cracking up figuring it was fake (and possibly just melted 'Baby Ruth' bars.
I expected "didn't want to do, but did it anyway" to include things like "pyramid power". I remember one of those episodes ending with Adam asking "Can we not do things like this again?"
In Season Three, Episode 14 they tested the claimed "magical powers" of pyramids, like sharpening blades and preserving food. I believe at the end of that episode, Adam asked that they not do any more of what he called “oogie boogie myths".
I don't blame you for getting tazed. Tori was willing to do most anything, I loved Mythbusters, especially the Hot Water Tank thing, now that was wonderful.
It is absolutely, 1000% astounding that Tori was not the first one to pass away out of the whole A/B host cast. I don't know about the crew... I think I remember one of the crew members passed? But Grant did, and that was just such a damn shame. I certainly don't want any of them to die but, man, surprised that Tori didn't Evil Kinevil or something.
Always love/d your work Adam! Keep it up mate! (Yeah, as an engineer I used to shout at the screen hoping that you would hear me. But i still tuned in every week... the whole family did.)
Sadly, I didn't see The Mythbusters all the way through the series end because my dad would fall short on bills and had to cancel our cable subscription. I remember crying because I would never see Mythbusters again. I was never bored watching you guys!
Discovery+ has every episode for like $5.99/month. I think the first month might be free as well. Either way, that’s like less than $0.10 per episode. Enjoy!
Thanks to all of you. I'll be subbing to Discover+ or take the free legal route to see the rest of the Mythbusters that I missed during my teenage years.
Now I'd love to hear about the other crossover episodes. The Storm chasers episodes where always a favorite of mine. Putting their modified cars behind a plane maybe wasn't a myth, but it felt like an important test anyway, to test just how safe they where
The thing about "quantifying death" made me remember 2 things that happened when i was little, and these two events were really close together...one was after bathing while i was still damp i accidentally stuck my fingers into an open power socket that my dad had been working on and hadnt capped off yet (this caused the breakers in the house to all trip and a transformer to go boom just outside our house)...the other thing that i had happrn around the same time was after finishing up swimming lessons with my older brother, the two of us and the rest of our family went to a nearby lake and the whole way up to the lake we were arguing about who could swim to the boui (floating thing that was chained to the bottom of the lake so it stayed put), well that year it had rained a LOT and the boi was under water, and i wound up swimming past it while the rest of my family was doing other things and not paying attention to me...well a lot of people drive boats on that lake and i got rolled by the waves they made, i'd blink and see the bright light blue sky with a couple little fluffy clouds and the big bright sun and then i'd blink again and see the town that had been in the area before the damn was put in and the buildings were all flooded, so old roofs down in the dark...i was spotted by a person who was a lifeguard at the coast who was at the lake on holiday, they got me back to the shore, but i was out (not breathing) for well over 5min, and was told that they shouldnt have been able to bring me back, but here i am...so yeah i can attest to both that being shocked/electrocuted , and drowning are both NOT fun and very much are things i would suggest people avoiding.
Something I've been wondering is what would be your funniest fail? I.e. it was so far away from what you were expecting or an error occurred during production or whatever and you and the crew just all had a good laugh about.
I deeply appreciate the dedication from the mythbusters team in making learning about science, physics, and engineering fun for me as a child. I owe you so much !!
I am an RN and have attended over 1500 deaths. I can tell you what dead is. The problem is determining the moment of death. You are correct about Tasers, they can be Lethal if the charge goes through the heart.
I do enjoy these glimpses behind the scenes of one of my favorite television shows. The only problem is I keep getting distracted by all the cool stuff in Adam's shop. Today, I noticed a "Scaled Composites" sticker on a drill press (or was it a bandsaw?). That set off several minutes of free association thinking about Burt Rutan and the airplanes he's designed. Good mental exercise, though. Thanks!
I still can't get over how The B team made you touch the Baghdad battery, then Kari asking, "Did you feel god?" It was a horrible prank towards you by the B team.
when I watched that I was literally scared for a sec, like... yeah the battery MIGHT be safe, MIGHT not kill, MIGHT just not work... but like, why risk anything?
For some reason, the two Mythbusters episodes that come to mind right now are the Diet Coke/Mentos one and the quicksand one. I remember your pure joy at watching the Diet Coke geyser! 😆
I know you and Jamie never got along the best personally, but do you ever keep tabs on him? Like call him on the phone every once in a while or something like that?
Adam has said he has had no contact at all with Jamie pretty much since the series ended. They weren't friends, they were colleagues, and most people have no further contact with most of their former colleagues when they leave a job.
@@dunebasher1971 Actually, I've seen one of these videos where Adam mentioned going over to Jamie's house to get something. I was surprised to hear it, for all the reasons you mention. When I heard that, I assumed that they'd sorted things out and become friends, or at least friendly acquaintances...
i don't think either hold any grudges or anything . jamie is older than adam and was his employer in the past . they both got hired for mythbusters and it was jamie that called adam to be on the show . he said he knew that his own personality was not going to carry a tv show but figured adam was the perfect person to add excitement to make it a success. so again JAIME WAS RIGHT
As a fan, I'm grateful for the level of thoughtfulness you put into answering these questions. MB was such an important show in the canon of science education for more than one generation. It was entertaining too, but you gave so many millennials a greater understanding of physics and the physical sciences in general. These shows are so dear to us because you made us smarter. I thank you for all of your work, on and off screen. I'm amazed at all the things you tried to do, and now, hearing the stories about it, just make them that much better because these questions are like the "bloopers and outtakes" from some of my favorite episodes. I also am happy that you still do new stuff, it's a good way to keep learning and enjoying the experimentations!
I love Mythbusters so much!! My husband and I would spend date nights binging the show when we first started dating a decade ago, I just finished rewatching all the seasons on Max, and I love sharing the show with our daughter to inspire and encourage her to explore STEM. Thanks so much for all the work the show did.
Hats off to you Adam... the last question.... you spent 7 mins talking about it... but never went into specifics and most people wont even have noticed, very well done lol!
Ive learned two significant lesson on life. 1. Just because it won't hurt most people, doesn't mean it won't hurt you. 2. Listen to that gut feeling telling you no. I've seen too many friends and colleagues badly injured by things that shouldn't have gone wrong and often right after ignoring that "I shouldn't do this" gut feeling. Also, am I the only one now wondering what the blue fake poo tastes like?
The fragility of the human body is really something. My mom was an avid horseback rider when she was young. There was a girl in the area whose horse spooked and accidentally bodyslammed her into the barn. It turned out that it was just the wrong timing, and her heart stopped instantly. She'd fallen many times before, been kicked, all the accidents that other riders experience. But this time was just perfect, terrible timing. I was just reminded of this by the part of the video where you were discussing how there was literally just one millisecond, and a tiny fraction of electricity between a taser (a weapon used every day) and what is considered potentially fatal.
The poo story reminded me of the months of working at a western university and attached to the area I was working at was their combustion research lab to maximize burning processes and working with the dog poo was part of the testing. Thank for bringing back that memory.
I remember the episode where a foil covered Ark of the Covenant was constructed and Adam got zapped. I do believe this is as close as he's ever came to going nuclear on Tory, Kari & Grant. Damn he was mad.
While I appreciate his reasoning in video for not getting tazed, I'm pretty sure the Ark thing was in the back of his mind. The look on his face said it all, part "have I been betrayed?" and part "did these a-holes just almost kill me?".
I have ALWAYS wondered what the fallout from that was. The look on Tory's face when he saw how pissed Adam was has stuck with me since it aired. @tested is there anything you can share about that incident?

Watching adams videos brings me so much nostalgia, back when I was young I used to sit with my mom and we’d watch NCIS, her favorite show, at 6 then my favorite show, mythbusters, at 8. It was like clockwork every Thursday and I really miss Adam and Jamie acting like hooligans for an hour in the name of science.
I always thought it was interesting that TV commercials for diapers and feminine hygiene products always use blue liquids. I imagined aliens from outer space watching our TV commercials, coming to earth to infiltrate us looking like ordinary humans and the way we are able to detect the alien invaders are that they pee and menstruate blue. 🙂
I'd imagine there's some sort of FCC regulation about using a liquid that resembles actual bodily fluid in a commercial which the viewer didn't ask to watch. On a TV show, where the viewer purposely set out to watch, no issue. Either that, or advertisers want to appeal to the widest audience and not gross out and chase away the squeamish portion.
I have seen recently ads using red liquid in menstrual pad ads. I guess blue is/was used for it looks clean and hygienic and that is what these ads want to convey. Cleanliness for your (or baby's) bottom. This red liquid is a bit too close to the real thing for me despite being just colored water and the real thing is just gross. And that blue liquid in porta-potties. Yack. It looks cool only in its container before pouring into the potty. But I guess that thing is just disgusting no matter what color it is.
My favorite episode was the one where they either coated or lined a shed with spray on automotive bed liner. They were then going to set off an explosion in the shed to see if it would hold up. I thought that there was NO WAY the shed would hold up, but it did. I was shocked!
I noticed that Mythbusters has returned to reruns every Thursday. I don't know if that was just for this month, but it's been fun rewatching and I hope to continue to. There's some episodes I'd love to see again, like the imploding tanker car and the snowplow of doom.
Just want to say thank you so much for doing myth busters. Although I had really expected some more controversial content as the show progressed, it was still by far much more interesting than most science based shows ever created.
Hey Adam! On the subject of stopping a heart with electricity, I have a few notes. Timing is hyper important when it comes to current - or really any force applied to the heart - stopping it. When looking at an ECG, it’s broken down into P-QRS-T at the most surface level. P represents atrial depolarization, the QRS complex represents ventricular depolarization, and the T wave represents ventricular repolarization. “R-on-T” phenomenon occurs when ventricular repolarization is interrupted by an extrinsic impulse, which interrupts the action potential and stops the heart. That being said, the timeframe to introduce such an impulse is fairly small and the impulse has to be strong enough to overcome the resistance imposed by the skin as well as the pacemaker cells in the heart.

Myth Busters was such a good show. Perhaps they ran out of good myths to bust.

Apparently it was a crew member who was behind the plot, not Tori, Carey and Grant.
I was thinking about this event when he was talking about the taser and wondering if it was before, after, or around the same time.
@@cheeto4493
Indeed!
Grant was there? I thought it was Tory Kari and Scottie. Either way, they’re all responsible even if they got goaded by a production member
Seriously. I dont even remember everything they did to themselves.
My dad was a deckhand on a charter fishing boat for a company that runs off the Washington State coast. Sig and his family actully went on a fishing trip through the same company.
I worked for this same company years after that had happened and I can tell you two things for certain:
1) If the guys on the boat (or in the company at all, really) think you're a jerk, they will let you know.....and they will let everyone they come in contact with (that is willing to listen) their feelings about you too.
2) Not one person there had a negative thing to say about Sig or his family! Nothing but praise. 👍
that tells me that he must really be a great person
I love deadliest catch 😊
I just wanted to say how much I loved this format of answering questions and just chatting to the camera. You come across as the king of person I could spend hours just chatting with you and never get bored
Thank you for this and please do more.
@@patheddles4004 Yep! Police officers, use them all the time, where they are not needed! And then lie on reports to cover themselves.
9:49 I spent almost ten years running CNC lasers that could cut through steel, and I know exactly how much room a laser that can cut through steel can take up.
The Q&A vids with Adam are always great. He‘s just such a good story teller
They're the reason I subbed! It's been worth it to see some of the other cool archival collection pieces in science and cinema as well.
Adam, you and Jamie are my heroes. You were with me when I decided to make a career in science and you were there for me through the entire beautifully agonizing journey of getting my PhD. Now my son watches you and I can see the same sparkle in his eye that you gifted me. Thank you !
I can spend as much time looking at the background of your shop as you present. So many cool things to observe.
Adam, your candidness, your humility and your wonderful handle on the english language is always a pleasure to tune in to.
you nailed it!! Adam is just "The Guy". I feel good after watching his videos.
@@darinjohnson4275 yeah he comes off as so approachable and everyone’s friend. Can just listen to him talk and tell stories for hours lol
I loved mythbusters. My dad and i used to sit and watch it together. Some great memories with him laughing about the show. Thanks Adam!!!
4:09 Pretty much the greatest sound anyone ever made
I know you’ll probably never really see this, but I wanted to thank you for always staying humble and teaching us all. Myth busters taught so many and you could have just gone on your merry way, but you are always there to answer anything you can about not only the show, but science. We love you for that.
I always wanted to see you guys test whether a dryer would actually catch on fire if the lint was never removed.
@@mbgal7758 thank you for the new fear
It works. If you're ever driving drowsy on a long trip, a short 15 minute nap is enough to reset your brain.
This helped me fix my sleep problems as a young adult. I just remembered that closing my eyes and relaxing is important and it’s not perfect but it’s better than worrying about everything I have to do tomorrow and not relaxing at all
I always feel more tired from sleeping just a bit than staying up. Maybe I'm broken.
@@Michael_Hunt
That was part of the results the Mythbusters found.
They FELT worse, but their mental capacity was actually BETTER.
It was surmised this may be why sailors swear so much.
... honestly I think of that episode where they found driving tired is worse than driving drunk
Clearly he enjoys it or he wouldn't do it on his own time.
Which episodes are those and why?
@@mrsteamie4196 Jessi died in an accident involving a jet car before Grant passed. She was going 550 MPH. So a bit more wild than Tori.
Enjoy!
Pluto TV is free and has a mythbusters channel where its on 24/7
Dude discovery plus! Also the mega movie myths episode is on it's own DVD I think for 20 bucks on amazon. Mines coming in a couple weeks 😄
Thanks to all of you. I'll be subbing to Discover+ or take the free legal route to see the rest of the Mythbusters that I missed during my teenage years.
@@KevinBelmontLuna and I cant recommend mega movie myths enough 👀😄
Now I'd love to hear about the other crossover episodes. The Storm chasers episodes where always a favorite of mine. Putting their modified cars behind a plane maybe wasn't a myth, but it felt like an important test anyway, to test just how safe they where
They should let me crash the storm chaser cars
They should give one to whistlin diesel to test. If it passes. It MIGHT be kinda ok. 99999/ 10 it would be destroyed🤣
Adam, I really enjoy these segments. So great to see listen to your narratives based on the episodes that we all know and love. Thank you!
Wow! That is some crazy stuff. Thanks for sharing.
Buoy is the word you are looking for.
yes I have experienced both. Not fun at all
Something I've been wondering is what would be your funniest fail? I.e. it was so far away from what you were expecting or an error occurred during production or whatever and you and the crew just all had a good laugh about.
I deeply appreciate the dedication from the mythbusters team in making learning about science, physics, and engineering fun for me as a child. I owe you so much !!
On the topic of tazers, there is a reason they are referred to as less lethal tools.
Let us know how it turns put
I am an RN and have attended over 1500 deaths. I can tell you what dead is. The problem is determining the moment of death. You are correct about Tasers, they can be Lethal if the charge goes through the heart.
Especially if the ticker isn't up for the strain.
Thank you Adam, for preventing Mythbusters from having a "Pink Flamingoes" moment!
Thanks!
That's funny, I noticed the ghostbusters one on the mill, and was wondering if there was a story behind it being there.
I'm just glad that Adam still enjoys talking about Mythbusters. I wondered if he'd get bored of everyone asking about it after all this time
Probably not as its his hobby, not a acting job.
Man I just love hearing Adams viewpoint on the world, he is such a treasure!
I still can't get over how The B team made you touch the Baghdad battery, then Kari asking, "Did you feel god?" It was a horrible prank towards you by the B team.
Imagine dying mad about it
when I watched that I was literally scared for a sec, like... yeah the battery MIGHT be safe, MIGHT not kill, MIGHT just not work... but like, why risk anything?
If I remember right, that was producer involvement, not the B team.
He was paid very very well, you should probably not take it so personally.
Never saw Adam more pissed off than that moment.
When I heard that, I assumed that they'd sorted things out and become friends, or at least friendly acquaintances...
i don't think either hold any grudges or anything . jamie is older than adam and was his employer in the past . they both got hired for mythbusters and it was jamie that called adam to be on the show . he said he knew that his own personality was not going to carry a tv show but figured adam was the perfect person to add excitement to make it a success. so again JAIME WAS RIGHT
I can listen to Adam talk about Jamie for days. I hope to see them both on camera one day again.
Thank you for your willingness to revisit and analyze the material.
Can’t believe Adam and Jamie had an argument for hours about fake poo coloration. XD
I've a feeling that arguing is a lot of what Adam and Jamie did together. They didn't really get along perfectly.
I can't believe that it was Jamie who wanted to eat it ... :D
@@NotTheStinkyCheese I can see Jamie being a Bill Murray fan. ruclips.net/video/TPxiXGr9nFM/видео.html

I love Mythbusters so much!! My husband and I would spend date nights binging the show when we first started dating a decade ago, I just finished rewatching all the seasons on Max, and I love sharing the show with our daughter to inspire and encourage her to explore STEM. Thanks so much for all the work the show did.
Huge respect to the mythbusters cast - these people were practically my childhood - and I'll never forget that.
7:01 Note that he says "you haven't seen it", not "it doesn't exist". Say no more, mr. Savage.
The taser bit potentially explains your reaction to Tory's shocking Arc of the Covenant prank.
I was just thinking that!
They were put up to it by the Australian production team who wanted more "drama". Honestly it sounds like they weren't well liked by any of the hosts.
@@Weezlenut I've heard it was a producer that put them up to it, and pushed them to do it. I've also heard that said producer was fired. (3rd hand info, for what it's worth)
@@Weezlenut yeah that had to have been a heck of a conversation.
According some other comments the build team was put up to it by a producer, which makes a lot of sense. The build team looked mortified almost before it was clear the "joke" wasn't funny to anyone.
I'm with you, buddy. I actually had a heart attack back in 2003, at a relatively young age, and no one is getting close to me with a taser.
You've got a wife and kids.
@@simonagree4070 you replied to your own comment an hour later ? I'm confused.
It wasn't an hour later -- just a few minutes. I forgot to say something that I wanted to say. No big deal, it happens all the time.
"There's somebody bigger than PHiiIIIIllll" - I grew up listening to the 2000 and 2013 albums in the 70s. Awesome reference!
The path the electricity takes plays a big part in if the heart stops or not.
