- This was a service call on a Hoshizaki Ice machine that wasn't working properly. I found the machine to have several problems and in the end the customer chose to replace the machine rather than repair it. Let me know what you think about the video in the comments.

thank for watching! I am going live on RUclips this evening 1/7/19 at 5:00pm pacific standard time to discuss my most recent uploads, come on over and check it out ruclips.net/video/UXpVzsY0gzc/видео.html
Every time you service a gross ice machine, I rethink ordering iced drinks in bars or restaurants.
Me too. I always wonder how they can go so long without doing any cleaning or maintenance.
Said every tech that works on ice machines.
You all prolly dont care at all but does anybody know of a method to log back into an Instagram account..?
I stupidly lost my account password. I would love any help you can give me!
@Leonidas Levi Instablaster ;)
@Hank Omar i really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and im waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Love watching how other techs approach stuff. I learn from an older gentleman who does everything by feel.
I have no idea how I got here, as I’m a welder/fabricator by trade (thanks RUclips I guess). But your videos are strangely fascinating!
Thanks bud
I have said it before Chris...You make it look so much easier than it really is lol
You are the best ,explaining and working at the same time, thank you
Outta the box, on a hoshi turn dip switches 1&2 on for extended harvest, and I may be wrong but I thought hoshi requires a 1/2 water line feed, looked like that ecolab had a 3/8 line running to the machine. Again. Good video
The story of my life ...... wrong water lines on hoshis
If you see Ecolab anything just assume that filter is long past gone. I have had the best longevity from those old Hoshizakis. Eventually the evaps split and won't release ice in my experience. I love the new Manitowoks too but the Hoshizakis with floats go on and on. That compressor rotted out is from the water being thrown all around out of the evap. But you know that.
Honestly it’s sad knowing Hoshizaki isn’t used as much anymore. At one time they were the best. I actually still have a 1991 Hoshizaki R-22 Ice Machine that runs like a champ. And it looks real good while running as well. It sparkles in the kitchen light.
Thanks a lot just got five these machines to service
Replacing a Hoshizaki with a Manitowoc!? BLASPHEMY!!
Regardless of this atrocity another well done video. Good Job.
to clarify the customer is supplying the manitowoc, I just install it. if it was my choice I would put a hoshi back in for sure. thanks for watching I am going live on youtube tonight 12/10/18 at 5:00pm pacific to talk about Hoshizaki Ice machines come on over and check it out ruclips.net/video/JhM0UMnL7YU/видео.html
If I was to buy an ice machine myself it would be a hoshizaki, just make sure it is properly installed with a hoshizaki water filtration system the proper water line sizes and the delivered water meets hoshizakis gpm requirements. The machine will last you a long time
Wow , in my 25th year of refrigeration and I’ve never seen a compressor bottom that rusty !
After watching his videos, i turn to my home fridge and wait for it to turn on.
For your calculations: 2:51 is not the same as 2.51 - it’s really 51/60 + 2 = 2.85
All great points👍! . I've had several freeze ups, broken deflector shields jamming the water pump, leaking check valves and evap plates coming apart. Other than that there great machines 🤣. Keep up the quality work my man!!!
Thanks Rick!
Great walk thru.
Have not worked on Hoshi, but so much of what you covered applies to all IMs. My only comment would be for new techs to realize an X lb rated machine is label rated at perfect conditions; ambient condenser and water supply temps will affect real world production.
So many of my facility's concessions ice machines are crammed into unconditioned closets. Insane.
Nice, thorough walk-through on your process with these machines. I appreciated your adding the calculation factors as well! Great detail. I have no doubt that customer was super well educated and informed by you, a lifelong customer if that keeps up! Glad they got the new units, (I was afraid I was going to have to break out my ball-peen hammer there for a second! "Tap-tap") ;-) But seriously, great work as always, well done!
Thanks for watching and thanks for the nice words
Manitowoc Ice machines are great as long as you take care of them. I’ve seen so many have to have the sensors replaced just due to them not being cleaned like they are supposed to be.
Love these videos. Since time isn't base 10 though the GPM calculation I would think would be 5 Gal / 2.85 min (where 2 minutes + 51/60 seconds) so the GPM is 1.75. Of course perhaps there is some other basis that took this into account.
I was going to write the same thing, he is calculating the gpm wrong. Seconds are base 60 not 10. So TheObiwantoby calculation ii right. Hvacr calculation is 2 1/2 min because calculators are base 10.
Great check out of Hosi. Nice area, most I've worked on were next to front entrance of store, everyone stop asking you what your doing to the ICE machine. :)
Good thorough check. I’m pretty limited with only servicing ice-o-Matics in my career but the convenience store we service are now getting the new hoshizaki cubelette machines. So trying to do a little research on them. Got Manitowok books but no hoshizaki’s. Gotta get on top of my game
Great breakdown and review on what you did.
I just wanted to say I’ve enjoyed your videos :). Thanks
Damn that thing look horrible! People dont take care of anything
Casey Smyth no shit they buy it and forget it until it breaks down
Yea I cant tell you one customer we have that gives two shits about there ice machine unless it isnt operating
@@brianmilburn4213 right.....ive had my share of customers who dont care. I caught an employee punching the damn unit that i had shut off while i went to my truck and got a part....a unit that was 2 years old and i couldve done it under warranty to take care of the customer. After seeing that i refused. The customer was pissed until he watched the video....Needless to say he had an immediate opening lol
Good instructions on those machines Chris ... Help's the young'ens coming up ...
Btw 2:51 is not equal to 2.51 minutes i would be :51 ÷60 = .85 or 2.85 minutes fyi i am enjoying the video sir.
5/2.85=1.75 Gallons per minute
Great job again
Thanks for all the great tips
Excellent work , sir ! I do like your prospective and insight into Hoshizaki machine. it help a lot for me to understand since I started read this tech manual. Thanks for sharing.
Chris you gotta get me more info on ice machines. That’s one refrigeration thing I would like to learn more about
GREAT JOB AGAIN
nice find!! Had something similar those plastic guards sometimes break and end up pinching the ice has happened to me a couple of times... actually had one like that today...but I like your vids keep em' rolling...
what do you think on checking the float switch to see if staying stuck causing it to run leading to freeze up.
I’m dealing with helping to run an ooooooold Corner Store in a small community on an island; it has 2 walk-in coolers and a 4-door stand up freezer with the big compressor and everything else right on top like self contained systems... which there are even more of: 2x 3-door Pepsi pop coolers and 3 Nestle ice cream freezers, which makes for a hot store in the summer, and because they’ve made some crude holes and vents to the outside to help the hot air escape, it doesn’t even help heat the place much in the winter due to all the cold air getting sucked in from the negative air balance... we need to figure out how we can optimize the ventilation for both situations, even get it on a thermostat so that it just switches back and forth from summer mode to winter mode automatically as needed. 🤔
Might be as simple as adding 2 large ventilation fans with those flapper vents that only let the air travel in one direction, one on the outside vent hole and one facing the store through the plywood box that’s hiding the area the compressor is in so that in summer only the outside one runs venting all the heat and in winter only the inside one runs, making the warmed air recirculate... shouldn’t cost a whole lot but it should make a difference... I think.
This is so helpful thanks for the video keep them coming 👍🏻
Hi good video. When I cam purchase the ice machine book ? When I cam see all specification of the machine
Chris, Sure would like to get ahold of some of these ice machine books for various models but I have been told you can only get them online now
i went to the factory parts store and they gave me the new orange book that has all the ice mechines for free
My Hoshizaki deal has stopped carrying them:(
if you attend a training session you get the book... they come every 2 years here and I always take em'
Time for a new one. Is it worth a compressor change out?
What`s the purpose of the condensing unit on the roof in this case?
4:41 aaand demonetized
Why?
😂😂😂
Michael Gabriel LOL
🤣😂😂🤣
Another great video 👍👍
Thanks bud
Hey Chris. My question is more related to charging to the customer. I believe this diagnostic is more or less 2 hours. Do restaurants care if you charge good.
Where in the world did you find out how much water the trough carries? I can not find that anywhere in the tech book. Thanks in advance !
good job
Should have been 5 gallons divided by 2.83 because 2 minutes and 50 secondis is 2.83 minutes, not 2.5. Just thought i'd add. That would have made the flow rate around 1.7ish gpm.
Oopse. Didn't realize someone already made the comment. Thanks again for the videos!
Great video!
Good job!
thanks bud
One of the things that’s interesting to me is when the ice guide loses tines and they make up into the water distribution channels
what about water treatment for human consumption, what is the procedure????'
Outstanding breakdown of going through the machine, always enjoy your videos. Where can a guy get one of those Hoshizaki tech manuals?
I got mine at a hoshi class my work sent me too..Hoshi will send ya one for a price I'm certain
Michael Balke you can order them direct from hoshizaki, thanks for watching I am going live on youtube tonight 12/10/18 at 5:00pm pacific to talk about Hoshizaki Ice machines come on over and check it out ruclips.net/video/JhM0UMnL7YU/видео.html

What machine in you’re opinion is the most reliable? Or is it like a car now a days, it’s all the same garbage and just have to get what you like better?
I will be going live on RUclips this evening 4/15/19 at 5:PM (pacific time) if you can come over and watch the stream I will answer your question there ruclips.net/video/Ft4L_-G7zzI/видео.html
Make you wonder how often do they clean these machines and do up keep to them. Maybe I should start asking for no ice please lol
Any reason they getting manitowoc and not hoshi. Just curious, noticed a lot of restaurants getting manitowoc. I hate troubleshooting them but I guess someone has to do it
Manitowoc gives the restaurants crazy deals. Plus MANITOWOC, DELFIELD, CLEVELAND,FRYMASTER, GARLAND,KOLPAK, LINCOLN,MULTIPLEX AND SERVEND are all the same company so basically they can provide a restaurant with everything they need to operate.
I didn't know they were all the same company.
Yeah they all exist under the welbilt brand
www.welbilt.com
Great stuff
Do you set your leak dector on High or Low setting on most of your troubleshooting?
I leave it on high 100% of the time
Wow that compressor is surely eaten up, kind of bad design it seems. Totally rusted through.
Got to adjust that drain tube over the floor drain
Where do you get that guide book from
i love you vids
Im running out of videos to watch haha
Manitowoc is better than hoshizaki? I always recommend to my customer that just get the hoshizaki.. haha
This customer needs a new compressor
Does any one remember when Manitowoc IMS had a problem with the Teflon (like) coating flaking off there evaporators? Not fun!
What timer app are you using?
Just the clock app that came with my phone.
Where can i get that hoshizaki book?
You can order it directly from Hoshizaki
HVACR VIDEOS thank you!!
When aren’t there issues with a Hoshi. Lol
Hoshizaki is a bitch to deal with :D
Damn your good
My brother. Teria como fazer um vídeo em português?
Awesome 👏
I'll take a medium soda pop NO ICE please (don't look inside the soda gun)
Km 1300 want 3/8" nominal
🤯
if the compressor is leaking why waste the time? the machine isnt going to last even a few weeks. this only shows that your tactic of checking everything and looking at it all.. is in the end just milking the clock.. i agree with it dont get me wrong but in this instance you needed to walk away. this machine is hopeless.
AND in the end you didn't change the compressor. so you can't argue that was cheaper. these hozi machines from what ive seen watching your videos as a bored person just tell me these are flawed machines. why not encourage the owner to a newer machine that runs probably less power per pound of ice and has the capability of doing basic cleaning on its own? just a thought... if i were in the situation with a pile of crap like this... id just move on to a new appliance.
This is the farthest thing from a waste of time. I find these videos full of such great content. Thanks Chris for being so thorough on your explanation and troubleshooting. You could have condemned the unit and stop recording but did not. Because you kept recording there is now a great video on the operation of these ice machines. Keep up the good work bro.
