I used to do the exact same thing on my xt3, It definitely gave more dynamic range, The problem is that it kinda mushes everything in the middle, so face/skin didnt look natural and it was hard to bring out detail and shadows in the skin in post. So I actually had DR100 or DR200 as default and just touched the DR400 and shadow and highlight if i really had to. If you use a monitor and can se the histogram, you can dial it back if something hits the bottom or top otherwise keep it default
Don't put the Eterna LUT on FLOG. You will have more dynamic range if you equalize by hand. The best way to understand this is to use (and show us the RGB parade). If you touch but do not exceed top and bottom limits, you will see more info in the FLOG than the Eterna image done in the same manner. Just slapping on the Eterna LUT, will blow out that info otherwise., The shadows are completely crushed on the face doing that for instance.
Hey Sean, good test! I was wondering, do you grade in Davinci Resolve? Perhaps the color space transformer will get a different result than using a LUT and get better dynamic range with FLog.
Hey there, I use Premiere but plan to get into Resolve at some point. Its possible there is some more room to be squeezed out but it might be slight. This test was more casual for sure. I've gotten some pretty cool/interesting results transforming the footage in Cinematch as well which I'll post soon.
A big part of the comparison was to compare the Eterna profile vs Eterna F-Log. There is a before and after edit of the two. Also, I would assume that the Eterna profile should also be blown out. Ill be doing a Standard profile vs WDR .709 soon too.
What settings did you use to export your video to RUclips? This is probably the softest XT4 video I've ever seen, even way softer than the XT4's 1080. Doesn't do the camera any justice.
@@seanmarkbaxter I don’t see that. But Log is not RAW, it is just a low contrast image. And recording in camera the closest possible to the final image is always the best choice in terms of quality. With artificial lights and high ISO (1600-3200, and probably also with a lower ISO), if I record in Log and then apply the Eterna LUT, I get much more noise than if I record directly in Eterna. Especially in white interior walls, and in shadows, I get colored blocks of pixels, like cyan or magenta. And also sometimes there is notorious banding. These things are not present shooting directly in Eterna. Thanks for the video!
Flog cannot rec lower than 640 ISO. the camera automatically bumps you up to 640. 640 is also the native ISO for the xt4. the dual native ISO kicks in at 1600
quick tip shooting video on xt4 in iso 800 Flog gives you more dynamic range than the base iso of 640iso

My only thought when you flipped the cards and F-log turned out to be so much contrastier:
"WHHHHAAAATTT?!!!!1"
Love the attention to detail! Hope all is good with you bro!

Actually the best way to normalize Log footage is through Davinci's Color Space Transform tool, it transforms using math to calculate the right way.
@@GabrielOliveira-bu9gd CST in Davinci works the same as official WDR 709 LUT. And yes, it’s the best option
@@galachiev So there's no way to get Eterna equivalent when shooting in FLOG?
When I apply the Fuji Eterna LUT on FLOG footage, it crushes it.
Thank. YOU.

Eterna LUT is not the best option. WDR 709 gives biggest dynamic range from the flog, while eterna blows up the highlights

Thought the same. Very fluffy image, almost felt diffused.
Very interesting find Sean 👍👍
f-log seems to have less noise for me
I noticed that too. It is slight and I'm wondering if that could be cleaned up in camera with the right settings.

the question is what is the ISO set at? Eterna 400% boosts the ISO to 640. was your flog footage set to ISO 100 only?

Fine but didn't need the f bomb. Jarring.
I actually liked the F Bomb. I'm about to fucking subscribe now.
Waste of time video in all honesty.
