I was sold on Eterna. I still like it. But Classic Chrome, in my opinion too, just has something special. If you're in high contrast situations, then Log will definitely help you out. But, on the whole, I agree, it's not necessary to shoot Log ALL the time, especially indoors. Maybe on high-end cinema cameras, but not when working with the XT3/4. 🙂
That 8bit CC footage exposed so low, held up so well. I just blew me away. my 10bit footage starts to fall apart by just basic white balance adjustments. obviously I am beginner and know very little, but still, never thought that was possible.
@@johnstamw yes. I remember when all this revolution started with 5d mark 2 having full HD (shit) video. People were making movies with it. It was like that's all they needed. And now a days no body wants anything less than 120fps 4k 4.2.2. internal. (Me included)
I love the colorful look you gave this video especially from 2:41 to 2:51. How do you achieve it? Only with classic chrome? Could I achieve the same with a Fuji X-S10?
As you said log is a good profile but not for quick turn arounds, I use classic chrome plus s few other simulations and when it comes to contrasty situations I bump up my DR to 400 and it does a perfect job which saves me tons of time to color correct and color grade.
Hey I'm a pretty new color grader, I wanted to ask at 9:01 what you meant by "f log gets noisy". Is shooting log more noisy than other picture profiles? Also why shouldn't I shoot log in darker scenarios? Just curious, thanks.
One thing I noticed with the log trend is how it's essentially eliminating the extreme/dramatic lighting. It's ok to have completely blown highlights or totally crushed black.
Log profiles arent eliminating anything. It's preserving the most tonal range information possible. It's up to the colorist to adjust the look as desired. You can blow it out in your editing software all you want.
Sometimes I think the people who preach the log format, regardless of the enviroment and situation they shoot in, haven't really understood what it was actually intended for. They want all the dynamic range they can get and yet they keep shooting log in scenarios with low dynamic range, which introduces a whole lot of issues like noise and ugly shadows with purple patches etc. I made the mistake once by taking the advice about shooting log all the time and came back from a shoot with almost unrepairable footage. Since then I've switched to using a flat Eterna profile for the majority of what I shoot to get the cleanest image throughout the spectrum, and only switch to F-log during high contrast situations like indoor scenes, where I want to retain the highlights coming through the windows, while being able to expose correctly for the subject I'm shooting 🙂
@@johnstamw I most certainly have and at least I learned the lesson on a low budget shoot where nothing major was on the line. Thanks for this video and sharing your thoughts and experiences, John! I shoot 95% 10-bit F-Log and I love it. ☺️ The remaining 5% I shoot with flat Eterna, typically in very dark spaces, when lower ISO is better, or in very cloudy spaces, when it is better not to squeeze the information too flat. I find shooting F-Log pretty straightforward with always checking the histogram not to clip the highlights and exposing a bit to the right. My color grading with Resolve is also very quick and flexible with power grades, i.e. clear and preset node trees including different LUTs (your LUT of course (!), Eterna, some other LUTs including e.g. Buttery LUT and with CST the ARRI-like Phantom LUTs originally made for S-Log!). I get great results with a couple of clicks only, thanks to Fuji's fantastic image quality. I have not yet fallen in love with Classic Chrome, I don't know why. 🤔 I should give it a try some time!
Could you explain how would Eterna give you an advantage in terms of noise? I understand you could go below iso640, but 640 is not really noisy. I do agree that LOG is noisy, but once you grade it or put a LUT over it, it is pretty much the same as Eterna would be.
Thank you for this video, it's great. I agree that CC is wonderful. I understand that you shoot CC and then color grade it using LUTs. When you shoot CC do you alter the tones? Would it make more sense to shoot CC at S-tone -1, H-tone -1? The second point I'd like to make is that I find Pro Neg Std even better than CC because it has wider DR and even lower noise.

Don't really need LOG. Agreed. Great work brotha. The film emulators/creative looks that are built into some of todays modern mirrorless are actually really great for most small projects.
I agree. I think people are usually missing the whole point of Log or maxing your DR. You just have to ask your self what is the actual dynamic range on the shot/scene what you are shooting? You don't need +13 stops of dynamic range when shooting for example overcast day. There might be only under 10 stops of dynamic range on certain light conditions. Or is maxing your DR even desirable? Blown out highlights or otherwise strong contrast might the desired look sometimes. So those extra stops of DR just makes your life harder at post production. And even if you would so to speak ''benefit'' from those extra stops it might still be making your post harder thus taking a toll from something else more valuable at the edit. Especially if you are (Like my self) not so into learning pro color grading stuff and rather focus on what really counts = what happens in the front of the lens :)
Good afternoon. Can you please tell me if it is possible to shoot video on Fuji without film stimulation? I mean to get video with pure color, without camera correction?
You can use Log recording, however that's still not "pure color without correction". In that case you would want Raw video output which gets closer to "pure color" and a few fuji cameras are capable of this.
What is really weird to me is that we can download the Eterna LUT and the Eterna BB LUT, but no LUTs for other film simulations. That should be really easy for them to offer. I hope they will in the future.
Awesome content man, just subscribed to see more. As an amateur videographer myself who shoots on Fuji cameras this gets me excited as colour grading is the one area I struggle with. Considering CC is my favorite colour profile to shoot still with, why not try using it for video too. Thank you 🙏
How do you combine CC and F-log considering there are no official Fujifilm LUTs for CC and for the other sims? Do you do it manually, do you use your own or third party LUTS?
Hola John!!! Si uso el CC, con la configuración de cámara que tú usas... qué preset debería comprar, el Fuji F-Log Lut? o el Fuji Lut ? Gracias hermano por siempre responder y ser tan amable ....
my question is: why don't we have a LUT for F-log to CC like the F-log to Eterna LUT you can get from fuji? When shooting Photos, I like to shoot raw, and choose the film sim in lightroom, that way I het the sim as well as the extra data. its a win win, and Having a LUT to do the same for video would be ideal, but i cannot for some reason find the F-log to CC LUT anywhere!
Really great video again. I'm new to videography, but after using 120fps on my X-T4 videoing skateboarding I can see myself falling in love with just as much, if not more than photography. After using the X-T4 for just a month, I can already tell that it's an amazing hybrid camera. With photography I shoot Raw+JPEG and for videography I'm only using Eterna at the moment, but I've definitely been curious and willing to try Classic Chrome. Even though Classic Chrome is your go to film simulation. I would love to see you do a video comparing it to Eterna.
I'm happy to hear you're loving the camera for video too! I tested Eterna quite a bit in the early days of my Fuji use, but never found it to my liking personally!
Good info, i realized that if you want to film a footage less than 4k is better using f-log option, now if you want to film like a footage or style of moving camera more natural than sharp right images or more linear and cleaner, avoiding f log is better, because you are doing more detailed landscapes or close people moving and face expressions with clarity what do you think?
I played with F-log and IT8 chart both reflective and transparency using 3DLUT creator. It didn't work. Best was negative std. - very little difference after correction. Haven't tried classic chrome. I'd like simulate film scans but 3DLUT Creator cannot deliver good result using match function.
Thanks a lot for the video John, and thanks for always having so much good footage to help get your point across. I got an X100V and have made two videos with it, both in classic chrome, and I'm really impressed with how the footage has come out. Especially in scenes with lots of midtone the colours really shine. All the best
Thanks for making this video John. As someone who shoots Classic Chrome almost exclusively in JPEG, I'd never really considered this in my video profiles. What else are you baking into this CC settings for video? Also I assume when you say rec709 you mean you apply that as a base lut to the footage? Cheers again.
@@johnstamw Right, gotcha. I think what maybe confused me here is you'e shooting in Classic Chrome but then started talking about rec709 (I assumed as base LUT). Camera Classic Chrome > any LUT or basic adjustments after. Now I'm up to speed.
On classic chrome, I have such dark shadows that I just don't use it because of this. How can you remove a lot of them? You have a very good contrast, not strong.
Great video, very informative and practical insights! Do you use DR200% or DR400% on those high dynamic scenes (+ highlight and shadow tone at -2)? And what about Eterna vs Classic Chrome, why do you prefer to use CC?
@@johnstamw Cool, thanks for the reply. I agree, Classic Chrome has a great look for video without much tweaking in post. I was surprised to see how much dynamic range it retains because it's mostly considered a picture profile for photos. Hope to see more Fuji related videos from you in the future.
Just be careful when using dr400 and highlight at -2, its so agressive on the highlight rolloff that you can mess up highlights in the face and almost smear out the luma on the skin. It doesnt look natural. I would only use that setting on extreme dr encironments and wide shots, not on closeups or midshots where you see face details. I only tweak those when the sky barely clips and i dont want to change exposure, gives you that extra bump down of exposure in the highlights.
@@johnstamw yeah, the great thing with the DR200/400 is that you can adjust the highlight compression in steps (they hardly affect the shadows, lifts slightly). In dr200 yo can go down to 320 ISO i think instead of being locked to 640. Its a great middle-ground. In f-log you are pretty much locked in and not much of adjustment freedom. You save time in post and can monitor exactly what you record withoul loading luts
Yes your colors are very nice, but its not the classic chrome? Its your grading for the most part I think? I have some weddings planned in september. Any tips how to get those (dreamy) colors? Starting with classic chrome and then ... ? :D
Aw that's kind of you to say! I do think color grading plays much into the conversation. My point here was mostly about Log not always being 100% necessary as the advice so often is portrayed online. Here's my best quick advice: expose properly while shooting, practice your color grading, then maybe you can use LUTs(even mine haha) as a base point (you can even lower the power%) for a grade or at least inspiration, then you grade it aiming for a distinct style while remaining somewhat subtle, not overdone, and then receive some critique, then grade it again. Oh, and give yourself lots of grace during practice and in the final result knowing that you'll be getting better all the time! Hope that helps!
Finaly someone that does the same lol Class Chrome and not be bothered with boring post process bla bla nice! I got 0 on shadows and highligts sharp +1 using pro mist 1/8 also but still not sure whats the best. Need to play with DR200 and 400 as never tested them before on video. Like the way how simple it is. Cheers.

I really like the way you color grade. the footage and all
appreciate your encouragment!
what's you parameters to shoot in Classic Chrome? highlights/shadows etc-? my camera is XT4
I do have a recent video about this! search "cinematic chrome"
How do you combine CC and F-log considering there are no official Fujifilm LUTs for CC and for the other sims? Do you do it manually, do you use your own or third party LUTS?
I don't combine them, just using my LUTs i'm able to color match them pretty well.
@@johnstamw Yeah sorry, I meant color match. Not a native english speaker.
I completely understand where you're coming from. That would be awesome!
Good info, i realized that if you want to film a footage less than 4k is better using f-log option, now if you want to film like a footage or style of moving camera more natural than sharp right images or more linear and cleaner, avoiding f log is better, because you are doing more detailed landscapes or close people moving and face expressions with clarity what do you think?
that's an interesting thought, I see what you're saying! It's all about the results that you get for your workflow!
Love this video John! Do you just use the standard classic chrome setting in the camera or have you changed anything else to the film simulation?
Are you using any nd filters or polarizers?
I played with F-log and IT8 chart both reflective and transparency using 3DLUT creator. It didn't work. Best was negative std. - very little difference after correction. Haven't tried classic chrome. I'd like simulate film scans but 3DLUT Creator cannot deliver good result using match function.
what did you mean by "classic chrome rec 709?"
not sure exactly where I say it but I probably meant classic chrome slash rec709 profiles meaning anything not-Log basically.
Do we have to use CST in DaVinci resolve for Film simulations as well or is it only for F-Log?
CST can technically be used for anything really, but most useful for Log to Rec709. Film simulations are default Rec709 so not necessary!
Great job! Watched this video at least 4 times..
thank you! Wow, northern romania looks beautiful through your lens!
@@johnstamw Thank you so much!
why don't you put classic chrome lut on your site
@@johnstamw I dont think fuji has the classic chrome lut. Only eterna and eterna bleach bypass
Thanks a lot for the video John, and thanks for always having so much good footage to help get your point across. I got an X100V and have made two videos with it, both in classic chrome, and I'm really impressed with how the footage has come out. Especially in scenes with lots of midtone the colours really shine. All the best
@@johnstamw Wow that's awesome to learn about log and midtones I definitely didn't know that, cheers!
Please make a tutorial to tweak classic chrome in post
@@johnstamw I turned on the notif bell for you
Thanks for making this video John. As someone who shoots Classic Chrome almost exclusively in JPEG, I'd never really considered this in my video profiles. What else are you baking into this CC settings for video? Also I assume when you say rec709 you mean you apply that as a base lut to the footage? Cheers again.
@@johnstamw Ah sweet man. I getcha. "Provia" in other words for us Fuji users. I'm going to pickup you Chrome LUT, seems to be lovely.
@@johnstamw Thank you very much, great service !! You are like fujifilm support))
Fantastic video
Interesting. man.. I need to upgrade to an X-t4. X-Pro 2 sucks for video
Your videos are the best. Thanks for sharing!
Hi, I'm a new subscriber and an x-t30 shooter. Love the channel and your focus on Fuji! Have you looked at the X-S10?
@@johnstamw Thanks for the quick response and for the videos.
@@johnstamw ow and I think maybe golden hour also gives you much of that nice brown beige warm colors! Am I correct?
@@johnstamw thanks for the advice! Just got my xh2s, exposure the subject 😎
@@bvmproductiesbe definitely the choice of time/location/lighting/environment all affect the color palette significantly!
Only fuji has film sims that's are basically graded and done
it's definitely a fun benefit
Finaly someone that does the same lol Class Chrome and not be bothered with boring post process bla bla nice! I got 0 on shadows and highligts sharp +1 using pro mist 1/8 also but still not sure whats the best. Need to play with DR200 and 400 as never tested them before on video. Like the way how simple it is. Cheers.
Hi John 😊 I loved this because I’m starting out with Fuji and love their sims on video. My favorite I thing is classic negative and if I’m right, that may have better dr than classic chrome. I’m not sure though. Would be killer to know your thoughts on that or even better to see how you would tweak it. Especially with night time filming because that’s where I think the magic happens
@@johnstamw That's exactly my plan! how cool. Would you have any advice on those filters for saving some cash? Yeah just trial and error is the way to go.
Those first 30 seconds had me like 😲
I was already planning to use a film simulation for my vlogs, you may have helped my decision.
@@johnstamw thank you for doing amazing work
Thanks for sharing sir! God bless!
thanks pierre!!
Why the heck does this only have 56 views wtf!
@@johnstamw haha I guess i didnt refresh the page for a while but i'll re phrase it "WTF this only has 1,100 views! Good work on your videos by the way, I have been learning a lot about Fuji.
Hello from France. Thank you for this video ! Your work is very inspiring and I love your color grading. In wedding, I shot in Flat Eterna but I'm not 100% convinced. I never thought to take the CC on video but I love it in photo. I'll try it, now ! 2 questions : You use your FUJIFILM LUT with the classic Chrome ? and you shoot in 100mbps or 200mbps ?
ok tomorrow i’ll try classic chrome! thx bro!
have fun with it!
my first review using @jhon stambaugh settings, on June 11 I worked on a wedding video client from Korea, using fuji xh1, the results were amazing, for photos, the colors and characters produced were very beautiful and encouraging , haven't had time to try color grading for the video, I'll update it soon, Thx a lot Jhon , your information is really helpfull!😍🙌🏻
@@anginlaut3476 that's so exciting!! For video, if you exposed properly(slightly underexposed hopefully), then when color grading you'll have to learn how to lift the shadows well without causing noise, but otherwise you should love it!
This is very helpful! Thanks.
what lens(es) did you use to shoot some of the b-roll? looks kinda anamorphic with those flares haha
great tip! thanks pal!
Hey John buddy! I'm leaning to using Classic Chrome in most scenarios because it makes my workflow, life much easier and it's more fun filming and looking at now when I'm rocking the Ninja V. I already bought your Big Sur for F-Log and now I'm thinking I need to buy Big Sur for film sims too? My understanding is if I use the F-Log version it will crush my blacks, right? And probably mess up the shot. I'm cheap skating hear a bit - because I already know the answer but I'll ask you anyways haha! Oh and when are you realising your new holy grail of honey Luts? Please name them that! You're a rockstar!
Hello there Stefan!! I do love me some classic chrome! When using the ninja V with classic chrome it becomes especially important to make sure to adjust the clip data levels before editing in Davinci. And yes the fastest workflow would be using my Big Sur Fuji LUT (rec709) howeeevverrrr technically you could sorta reverse convert your footage back to F-Log with Color Space Transform then apply the F-Log LUT haha! You’d get the perks of shooting with classic chrome and possibility of editing with it but yeah technically you could kinda fake convert it to F-Log😂 the name isn’t quite finished yet but thank you for the compliment my guy!!
@@johnstamw Broder! Thanks for the feedback. I will buy the correct Lut and keep the workflow short and sweet 🌞 You mean changing from video to full? I already do that on all Prores from the Ninja. I had to watch Geralds video a couple of times and also tried the ‘full to legal range’ lut but it makes filming so grey and tame. I want to feel excitement and see a beautiful image plus I kinda want to get the “image” in camera if that make sense. You’re awesome - thanks again for taking the time to reply! It helps a lot! I’m shooting my first real wedding this weekend and I’m going to go classic honey chrome all the way!
Gravei um vídeo usando o CC e achei que ficaram com muitas manchas escuras principalmente na pele.
Crack bro !! God bless you !! greetings from Chile 🇨🇱
Así es !!! Me cuesta expresarme en inglés , pero no pudiste haberlo dicho mejor. Eres bendecido y tienes la mente de Cristo ! ❤️🙏🏻
Excellent points!
Idk the couple looks like they're glowing in some scenes
idk either about that
Heh - Chrome (with my personal tweaks) is what made me jump 3 generations of Fuji, the moment I saw pics taken in Chrome. It's fantastically balanced and versatile. Fuji was the first camera I didn't shoot all in RAW... and we all know why :D I know I'll use f-log, but Fuji has taught me to trust the camera for years, and I know it will will not let me down with video :)
@@johnstamw SO true! I'm pretty accomplished with color & monochrome work in still photography, so when Fuji came out with simulations in both that I could not reproduce on my own, I was SO EXCITED! Also, I grew up in the 70s, so Super 8 film and Chrome film both stir up tremendous nostalgia for me :) It's why I'm hoovering all the color-work videos I can find, so I can turn our crystal clear modern digital work into classic film-looks LOL (Fuji lenses have a ton of character, which always helps :)
I fully agree with your approach.
Great video👍
Fyi..when it comes to “You must do it this way” “You should be doing this” “You should be buying this”
“I hate that”, and regurgitating the opinions and styles of the more active RUclipsrs, Americans are the No1 in the world.
😂😂 look at the idiots who all must buy straps by Peak Design.
PD must be laughing at all thess kids. So easily manipulated😂
Same goes for shooting in RAW, F-Log, must have dual card slots etc. The market itself is so highly manipulated.
Keep up the great work👍
