There is a great difference between your 10bit and 8bit footage, but I wonder how they would look if they were bot f log and colored the same way, as film simulations could be the reason I don't like 8bit in this example. Thanks for the great example)
Yes the color and look is different because of F-Log as you said, however the screenshot I provided of the curves from Davinci is a helpful example of the data difference! Also the reason I recorded this way is because I personally don’t recommend F-Log in 8bit because I think it needs more data in order to safely withstand grading.
Nice vid bro! Really great to see the difference in the quality. 10 bit def better but I don’t think one would notice if it wasn’t side by side. Just got saving data sake on long wedding days I think 8 bit will do. But perhaps 10 bit would help during receptions or low light scenes for editing? I should do some testing myself instead of speculating hahaha
I was surprised to find that my eyes actually can tell the difference between these two shots. Its a noticeable downgrade in quality going to the xt3 footage here. I'm just not sure what changes in settings are the main reason for that. Is it the 8 bit? the mbps? the baked in simulation? So far I shoot 200 mbps, 10-bit, usually using classic chrome on my xt4. Not sure if should try changing it up yet. I have a powerful machine, but still need to use proxies.

Very practical presentation! I am barely functioning with 10-bit 200 myself but I can manage if I convert the files to Pro Res first (I use EditReady but there must be many other options). Just to add another layer, here is what is perplexing to me, as I am considering getting an Atomos Ninja V: If I understand the menu screen on my Fuji, if I send a signal out to the Ninja it will go out at 10-bit 4:2:2 (no other options). So my question is, does that change the mbps as compared to recording internally at 10-bit 4:2:0? I would imagine so but I haven't noticed the answer anywhere yet. Perhaps I am confusing different issues. Anyone's insights appreciated. - Dave
Extremely useful..Thanks a lot.. Right now we are struggling to chose between xs10 vs xt4 for these very same feature differences.. Do you think 8 bit vs 10 bit , or 1080p vs 4K 60 matters for Instagram uploads for bridal portraits¿
thanks for the breakdown and samples. Those shots with the white boarders look super sharp.. is that a layout you uploading into ? Or made those boarders in your editing software? Thanks!
is there any other way to shoot 10bit on fuji other than to buy the atomos ninja v? i want to shoot 10bit but at a low budget. would truly appreciate anyone's help.
old video so this question might go under the radar, but here goes...! I’m currently looking to upgrade my X-E1 which I loved for photography in order to be able to pursue personal video documentary projects of my own but am low on budget (ie can’t go for the X-T4 which basically ticks all the boxes!). I know this is ultimately very personal but would you recommend going for something with IBIS or the T3 which has internal 10bit? I just feel like I’ll only know what I’m going to appreciate more through weeks or months of work which makes the decision hard without the hindsight! Ultimately both could be addressed going forward by investing in either a Ninja V or a gimble I suppose, but that would potentially a few months for me! Thanks for the very helpful content, finding it very handy as I navigate through my choices 👍
@@johnstamw Thank you for your feedback! So hard to decide at this point, the 4k60 of the T3 is a big selling point too, especially since it can effectively help in stabilising handheld shots by means of slowing down... Or else the H1 makes a good alternative to the S10, older sensor but still highly regarded and a few pennies left to put towards the Ninja... Decision decision... 🤔
Great Channel :) Do you adjust your classic chrome settings in camera (tweak color, sharpness, shadow/highlight) and/or make additional color grading in post to achieve the look for this video? Or just straight out of camera? Having the X-S10 for two weeks now and not sure if I should go with Classic Chrome or F-Log. 8 Bit 4:2:0 not perfectly suited for color grading, but I also want the flexibility the create different looks based on F-Log instead of having already a look out of camera (although I really like classic chrome!)
Are there any 3rd party lenses you'd recommend for the T30 or any of the X series cameras? Just bought a 7artisans macro lens and an XF Fuji 35mm. Better to stick with Fuji or try 3rd party? Might be a good video to make

Wait a second. If you shoot with 200 MB per second, does that mean that you have one GB every 5 seconds? Or do I misunderstand something? I am currently trying to understand this whole Bitrate topics but I don't really get it yet. I recently shot with a borrowed camera (Canon 5D Mark IV) and the footage is 4k 25fps and has 4GB for a 1 minute clip. My computer is unable to even play it and I dont understand why the camera produced such huge files. Normally I also shoot in 4k 25fps with a Sony A7 3 and I don't know a specific file size, but its much much smaller, after hours of shooting its only like 100GB of footage. What did I do wrong with this Canon?
I find this tool helpful -- frogsoft.com/filecalc. The 5d4 is notoriously awful for the massive and awful video files, which I understand is largely due to the archaic container, MJPEG. You didn't do anything wrong, just old canon, awful file type.

Great video, you skin looks slightly different but both could be used in film to me.
Hey friend, i have a xt3 the only thing i am struggling with is the dynamic range. I see your videos and your skys are sometimes bright but not too blown out. Id love to see a video on how you shoot something with your settings and how you treat it in post for color corrction to achieve the dynamic range you are getting. Thank you for everything, you're one of the reasons i got a fujifilm x-t3
@@johnstamw thank you i appreciate it, dynamic range is my biggest struggle
When choosing a new gear to film, what should be the ranking of priorities?
8 bits vs 10 bits? 4.2.2 vs 4.2.0 or 4.0.0?
Or the bitrates?
@@Tavostor Thanks. This helps in the choice of my future gear (S5, X-t4 or R6) Videowise, then the X-t4 seems the best with 10 nits 400 mbps and only 4.2.0 internal.
@@johnstamw Interesting about F-Log and 8bit, I wouldn't think so, thanks :)
I'm curious which looks better, 8 bit 4k or 10 bit hd - both in 60 fps.
Good video..
@@johnstamw ya true. From what I’m seeing, h265 is still a pain at the moment eh? But ill have to play around with it!
I have a question. My monitor is only 8 bit, could i edit 10 bit video files with it? Like colour grading and have the information to do it so.
Hey John. Very helpful video. Just out of curiosity, do you mind sharing your Editing Workstation specs?
I was surprised to find that my eyes actually can tell the difference between these two shots. Its a noticeable downgrade in quality going to the xt3 footage here. I'm just not sure what changes in settings are the main reason for that. Is it the 8 bit? the mbps? the baked in simulation? So far I shoot 200 mbps, 10-bit, usually using classic chrome on my xt4. Not sure if should try changing it up yet. I have a powerful machine, but still need to use proxies.
My XT-3 doesn't let me select 4K 24fps 10 bits All-Intra below 400Mbps. If I select Long GOP, it allows me to do it. Why is that?
I don't use All-Intra, only Long Gop for me. ALL-I is always 400mbps
Hey bro! 400 bits is 50 mb/s in sd card. 200 bits is 25 mb/s?
@@johnstamw It's because I would like to know how long I can record before filling a 64-128 card, you know? In 4k, 10 bits, 200mb/s. Would you know how to answer me?
Great video man! Im having a really hard time getting high quality youtube videos, any export suggestion for youtube?
Hmmm as long as your exporting 4k h264 and it looks good on your devices locally I’m not sure why youtube compression would be too much?? I’m sorry it’s not exactly my expertise!
@@johnstamw thanks man! Yes indeed exporting at those exact settings however when I watch my videos on a laptop or TV they look awful. Someone suggested a ProRes 422 export, does that make sense? I’m ok FCPX too. Thank you loads for the feedback!
@@isaacmaxpaul that's odd:/ I'm sorry i know it's frustrating, but I would just move to trial and error! Prores might help!
wow ! the diffrence is so big for someone that has been studying cinematography, i jut got a xt3 and i filmed on 8bit im tottaly doing in 10bit 200mbpnow, im wondering what sd they use
I use the most basic sandisk extreme cards, they’re in the description. You don’t have to buy into the whole uhsii high speed thing.
- Dave
Is there much difference in quality between 200mbs and 400mbs?
Extremely useful..Thanks a lot..
Right now we are struggling to chose between xs10 vs xt4 for these very same feature differences..
Do you think 8 bit vs 10 bit , or 1080p vs 4K 60 matters for Instagram uploads for bridal portraits¿
thanks for the breakdown and samples. Those shots with the white boarders look super sharp.. is that a layout you uploading into ? Or made those boarders in your editing software? Thanks!
Would have been cool if you said 8 bit 100mbps / 10 bit 200mbps a few more times ;P Great vid, very informative. Cheers
is there any other way to shoot 10bit on fuji other than to buy the atomos ninja v? i want to shoot 10bit but at a low budget. would truly appreciate anyone's help.
old video so this question might go under the radar, but here goes...!
Great Channel :)
Do you adjust your classic chrome settings in camera (tweak color, sharpness, shadow/highlight) and/or make additional color grading in post to achieve the look for this video? Or just straight out of camera?
Having the X-S10 for two weeks now and not sure if I should go with Classic Chrome or F-Log. 8 Bit 4:2:0 not perfectly suited for color grading, but I also want the flexibility the create different looks based on F-Log instead of having already a look out of camera (although I really like classic chrome!)
Thanks for your feedback and advice:) will have a look to the video!
With XT4, you can shoot 4k60 in 400mbps. I dont understand why you tell at 3m39, it's only 200Mbps in 4K60.
@@johnstamw strange really, so not 4k60 at 400mbps ? Onyly with 30/25/24 ips ?
Are there any 3rd party lenses you'd recommend for the T30 or any of the X series cameras?
Just bought a 7artisans macro lens and an XF Fuji 35mm.
Better to stick with Fuji or try 3rd party?
Might be a good video to make
@@johnstamw Fair enough, thanks for getting back to me, I'll check them out! When I had a Canon I heard about Sigma a lot. Long shot but if you reached out to some of the 3rd party lenses and showed them your channel they might send you one to test. But time is a separate issue. Great videos John, keep it up
I need you to help me.
I want to record 4K 60fps 10bit 4:2:0 directly on the camera body, can I use this type of memory card?:
" SDXC SanDisk Extreme Pro U3 V30 1133x 64GB SDSDXXY-064G-GN4IN 170MB/s "
Can you advise me a memory card suitable for the parameters I want to record? Thank you very much.
We’re you using the 18-55 for those clips?
I have one question , does it make sense to shoot 10 bit with let’s say classic crome or Astia soft rather than flog as I am really bad at colour grading and I like to get good colours straight out of camera
@@johnstamw thank you I will see what I can do
Great Video! Found it to be helpful. Question can firmware update improve Fujiflim xs10 8bit to 10 bit internal? If some one can answer this for me it will be very helpful, while I just purchased Fujiflim x-t4 that has 10 bit, but I would prefer sx10 to save cost.
You must use atomos ninja for external monitor and you get 10 bit with xs10
Hi John, which lens do you use for the most time shooting wedding? Like shooting weddings with xt4 hanheld?
@@johnstamwDid you work maybe with gh5 to compare with xt4? I have 18-35 on my board and it's great lens but gh5's lowlight is sometimes very noisy
Ps. Really nice chanel :)
Thanks sooooo much for your video - really useful. Thinking of getting the XT4 but worried about my laptop and work flow. How is the 1080 footage on the XT4? That is probably something I am considering for RUclips. Your thoughts on this would be appreciated :)
Here is a Video Idea... Help me figure out why I cant playback or edit ANY of my X-T4 files. It doesnt seem to matter bit depth or h.264 or h.265. Any video is not working like at all. All of my sony, panasonic, and canon video files work with no issues. Im so confused, help a brotha out lol.
Even you shot 8 or 10 bit we all watch 8 bit RUclips quality video. So how possible we see differences in here? Thanks
And all these are .mov files, right?
Good informative video 😀 How to export files that are 10 bit and do 10 bit render on any screen? Like they work on cellphones too?
@@johnstamw No worries. I'm on its quest and I will let you know once I get some clarity...

Great video John! I bought my X-T4 like a month ago and trying out a bunch of different settings on it! I love this camera 😍
One question which I feel didn't get answered though! How about the 1080p vs 4k? Do you think it's a must with 4k or can you scale up 1080? I compared my old Canon M50 (8-bit 1080p) with shooting 10-bit 1080p on the Fujifilm and it's such a difference in quality. I couldn't believe it!
What's your take on 1080p vs 4k on this camera?

John, first of all thanks for the video! I'm new to Fuji so I came across a little problem. I used to shoot interviews with Sony A7 iii, but now I have to switch to Fuji Xt3 for some reasons.
