    Great video! I was blown away when I captured a clip of a gradient sunset sky with my Blackmagic Pocket 4K, and my old GH4, keyed it and graded it heavily in resolve, and realised how weak the 8 bit footage from the GH4 was and how elastic the 12 bit footage from the Pocket 4K was. While the GH4 shown extremely noticeable different areas in the sky, the Pocket 4K shown a actual gradient. Everything is more tridimensional.

    Very timely with the X-S10 releasing this week with only 8bit. The 8bit looks a lot more harsh with clear, darks, lights and some mids. While the 10Bit has a lot more gradation of exposure and color to it. For $1000-$1700 you can't find a cheaper 10bit camera which is so feature packed as the X-T4/3. The new X-S10 at $1000 is best for international travel for personal photography with a bit of video or blog on the side.

    Chroma subsampling could be another decisive factor. Like maybe 8-bit 4:2:0 vs 10-bit 4:2:0 is not gonna make a huge difference, but when you go 10-bit 4:2:2, maybe you can really get the benefit of those 10 bits and 100 extra megabits per second.
    Just a thought.

  • @aristotle_4532

    The difference is in PSNR. The noise of the compression is higher in lower bitrates and lower bitdepths. The shadows of the 8bit compressed formats of the XT4 are very bad, blocky and quarantized, but the shadows of the 10bit format are pretty good. PSNR noise is visible in anything that has low exposure (shadows and mids) and anything that is raised when boosting exposure in post. Every extra dB of PSNR counts.
    The same applies to the Prores formats. The difference from one format to the next is only a few dB but many people need that difference.
    If one will just shoot, cut and upload without raising shadows, the lowest quality format in XT4 is more than enough for 5-10Mbit/sec H264 1080p distribution.

    • @aristotle_4532
      @aristotle_4532 3 года назад

      @@johnstamw Apple have some PSNR values in page 16 here:
      www.apple.com/final-cut-pro/docs/Apple_ProRes_White_Paper.pdf
      Formats are compared using PSNR. There are some comparisons for GOP here:
      www.researchgate.net/publication/273187466_Impact_of_H264AVC_and_H265HEVC_compression_standards_on_the_video_quality_for_4K_resolution
      A given PSNR is an horizontal line, so bitrates are compared by drawing horizontal lines. Any bitrate savings are shown this way.
      Intra requires higher bitrate for the same PSNR.
      Quality depends on implementation. Cameras have to operate in low power and work fast, so they do not employ the best methods.
      I got an XT4 with the three f2.8 zooms, so I'm doing tests these days. 10bit is really good.

I’m currently looking to upgrade my X-E1 which I loved for photography in order to be able to pursue personal video documentary projects of my own but am low on budget (ie can’t go for the X-T4 which basically ticks all the boxes!). I know this is ultimately very personal but would you recommend going for something with IBIS or the T3 which has internal 10bit? I just feel like I’ll only know what I’m going to appreciate more through weeks or months of work which makes the decision hard without the hindsight! Ultimately both could be addressed going forward by investing in either a Ninja V or a gimble I suppose, but that would potentially a few months for me! Wait a second. If you shoot with 200 MB per second, does that mean that you have one GB every 5 seconds? Or do I misunderstand something?
    I am currently trying to understand this whole Bitrate topics but I don't really get it yet. I recently shot with a borrowed camera (Canon 5D Mark IV) and the footage is 4k 25fps and has 4GB for a 1 minute clip. My computer is unable to even play it and I dont understand why the camera produced such huge files. Normally I also shoot in 4k 25fps with a Sony A7 3 and I don't know a specific file size, but its much much smaller, after hours of shooting its only like 100GB of footage. What did I do wrong with this Canon?

    • @johnstamw
      @johnstamw  2 года назад

      I find this tool helpful -- frogsoft.com/filecalc. The 5d4 is notoriously awful for the massive and awful video files, which I understand is largely due to the archaic container, MJPEG. You didn't do anything wrong, just old canon, awful file type.

    One question which I feel didn't get answered though! How about the 1080p vs 4k? Do you think it's a must with 4k or can you scale up 1080? I compared my old Canon M50 (8-bit 1080p) with shooting 10-bit 1080p on the Fujifilm and it's such a difference in quality. I couldn't believe it!

    John, first of all thanks for the video! I'm new to Fuji so I came across a little problem. I used to shoot interviews with Sony A7 iii, but now I have to switch to Fuji Xt3 for some reasons. So the problem is that the files on Fuji are really larger. I've inserted a formatted 128gb sd card in Fuji and it shows 99 minutes (fullhd 16:9, 25p, 100mbps, h264, 8 bit, long gop) whereas Sony could record up to 150 minutes with the same settings. Maybe you know or somebody who is reading this knows what could be the issue here?
