Hi. Just discovered your videos, thanks so much. As a 71 yr old technophobe I bought my first camera at the start of covid lockdown in the UK, a used X T20. To me it was a black box full of witchcraft and wizardry. I have now made a quantum leap forward.thanks again. John.

I have been a cannon user for a long time, ( just a hobby ) , but they just got too heavy. I have recently bought an old Fuji XT 1. All I can say is thank goodness I found your videos, it’s been such a help . 👍🏻
I think back button focussing is a natural progression as your photography improves. Thanks Chris for explaining it so well and giving some settings to start with, again a great help to me.
This is gold. Thank you for explaining what to do and actually show how you do it. Could you make a video on what focus settings to use on Fujifilm (and how) for wildlife, like capture moving animals ? I think an explanation from you would help so many people, like me who just does photography as a hobby.
Great tip! But I would recommend not switching AF-S shutter focus off, but instead just let the camera live in manual focus all the time and focus with the back button. That way you have both options at your fingertips: if you need the shutter to focus, you just toggle the focus switch from M to S. Particularly handy in situations where you need to give the camera to someone else to take a picture and everything needs to be as automatic as possible.
Sorry to ask this but I am newbie and AF-S focus off? Are you talking about the Focus Mode Selector or a menu setting could you explain a little more in simpler terms as I am struggling getting to grips with this tip? I have zoom focus issue appearing all the time when selector is in M setting ie the little sub focus area in the main screen
@@nigelblanchard5571 I am talking about the menu setting. In the video Chris suggests to go into the menu and switch your shutter focus off for AF-S. That way your shutter stops focussing when you half press it. On the back of the camera there is an AF-ON button. That AF-ON will auto-focus, even if the camera is in manual mode with the switch on the front of the camera. Chris points this out in the video too. Often people refer to this method of focussing as "back-button focussing". My suggestion is not to follow Chris' suggestion for switching the shutter focus for AF-S off in the menu, because then the shutter focussing behaves the same when the focus switch is set to M as set to S. If you don't switch shutter focus off in the menu then your camera will still focus when half-pressing the shutter if in S, but not do this when you are in M. Your zoom focus sub area will not appear if you press your AF-ON button when the selector is in M. It only appears when you change the focus using the zoom ring on your lens.
As an ex Canon user, I can relate to the struggle hahaha... It's really hard sometimes. It feels like the more you understand the system, the more you're happy to have switched. But also, sometimes you hate it when you can't figure out what the hell is happening. Your channel is a huge reason why I didn't freak out and switch back.
As another ex canon user to Fuji, any idea how to get sharper photos? Shooting portraits at a F2.8, shutter 1/250 minimum, and eye AF.. looks like it’s in focus then you zoom in and it’s honestly not very sharp compared to my EOS-R
Best video dedicated to focus on a Fuji and explaining the back button focus. Straight to the point. Decoupling the shutter button from the AF half press is a good idea when using AF lenses that don't have a clutch focus ring (or AF MF switch). When using a fully manual lens or a clutch one, and if the SMC selector is on M the half press just doesn't work and it's a good point. Also for the back button to take over when manually focusing on an AF lens (with or without clutch) I think the AF+MF setting must be ON. I wish Fuji makes a separate AFL AEL back button on the next X-PRO4.
Excellent presentation. This video is a great refresher and reminder why many of us love the Fuji cameras. I knew some of this but never slowed down enough to fully comprehend the combinations and solutions available to us. Bravo....Wayne
I really wish Fuji would take a note from Nikon and have a help function when navigating menu screens that displays a description of what that menu functions does. That single function is what attracted me to and kept me using Nikon for YEARS.
Your genuinely one of the reasons why I love fujifilm lol like honestly I was a complete beginner a year and a half of ago and other channels help me with composition lighting and etc with the theory of photography and you practically rewrote the fujifilm manual on how to get these ideas in practice. Seriously thank you!
Thanks so much! Love your work. In under 9 minutes you’ve answered the many questions I’ve had about focus. You’re a fountain of knowledge and infectious enthusiasm.
This really clears up questions about the AFs. My X-T3 is already set to the back button focus and has been working beautifully. Hopefully, I won't mess things up by trying this out as well. Thanks for this video, excellent!
You've really helped me better discover my new X-T4, thank you! I have a question though: what's the use of AF-L and AE-AF lock when you can just do that with half-pressing the shutter? I've been seeing it on so many DSLRs throughout the years, and dedicated buttons no less, nd I could never understand the use, personally...
Pal, you keep reading my mind. I was playing with the back button option this week. I find it to work out fantastic because you can quickly require focus and lock it there. I didn't know you could turn off the shutter button. That's a great tip. The back button option makes shooting my xs-10 a joy now. Great job!
Everybody i know in my club photo like the back button focus, pretty helpful and nobody want to go back :-) Thx for the great Friday video and enjoy your weekend.
Thank you for your video and this helped me a lot as I’m a new Fujiflim user. I like your explanation to be clear, detailed and easy to understand. I’ve been confusing about this few feature. Thankyou so muchhhhh 👍🏻❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you very much for your clear explanation! Fuji should pay you for doing teaching videos on cameras, instead of the sub-optimal manuals;-). I had never understood the function of AF-ON, but now I will give it a try...
Excellent excellent tutorial that clears away confusion, Chris. 👍 It's worth repeated watching to really get a hang of the Fujifilm AF techniques. Thank you for doing this and have a great weekend! 🙏🏻
Great video as always Chris!!! I've been using AF-ON + disable shutter autofocus for more than a year and I love that configuration. I use Fn2 (front button controlled by my middle finger) for AF-ON because I have a thumb grip on my XT4 and I like to keep my thumb on it for a more stable grip. Another benefit of this setup is that I give my middle finger an honest job 😉.
Hello pal2tech, the best you have To forget. A few days ago I found out that the Back Button Focus can also be used for manual focusing. That’s really great. Now you don't have to focus for a long time Manual mode but only need to press the button briefly. In connection with Focus Pekin mega good.
Thank you for posting this video! I just switched over to Fuji from Canon and the one area I’m having a tough time figuring out is the auto focus. On my Canon, if I pointed my camera at any scene on auto focus and half pressed the shutter it would guess and auto focus at a certain single point of the scene. If I didn’t want that point to be the focus I could just tap the screen to readjust to a different point. I understand you can move the focus point and tap to adjust on Fuji, but I am having a hard time figuring out on single point focus how to get it to “guess” where the auto focus should be first. If I am on autofocus I would think I should be able to aim my camera at a baseball bat, and it auto select to focus at the tip of the bat, but if I wanted it to instead focus on the handle, I should be able to tap the handle to refocus there. The only mode that seems to guess the focus is Wide on Fuji, but I can’t then tap on a specific part of the scene to focus on that instead. Could you please explain how to achieve that? It seems fairly simple to me but written out sounds a lot more complicated! Thanks for all your help!
As always great video. Back button focus has been something I've always avoided with no real reason as to why. As I'm ignorant to the process what would the benefit be to using back button versus holding down the shutter button and recomposing? I'm struggling to understand the application where back button focus would be ideal?
I’ve got the AF-L set to AF-On because I think you mentioned previously; the advantage of this over how it works on Other cameras is you can have both; half-press to focus like normal, or by switching the front to Manual, you have full back-button focusing. So no need to switch half-press focusing off, you just turn the front switch to Manual. Best of both worlds.
Superb explanation, I often found it confusing at times, i have mine set to continuous with back button focus as I like to have the best of both especially when photographing my daughter as she never sits still 😂
Thank you! I love your videos so much! You taught me so much on my newly purchased XT4 which even the user manual can’t. Your videos saved me so much time to understand the XT4 setting and functions. Looking forward to more videos of yours!
Great video! Only one thing which you did not mention - if you have lens with manual clutch and you activate the clutch manual focus - back button focus will not work anymore.
Actually, after I've had my Fuji on backbutton-focus for a while when in AF-S, I realised some time ago that putting it in manual focus is a much better option to get backbutton-focus! Because as you have shown, you still get all the benefits of back-button AF when in MF, and you get the extra benefit of having focus-peaking. So the MF mode already works like having back-button focus, and better (because you don't get focus-peaking when in AF-S mode).
awesome video man. i was getting a little confused myself about all the AF this, AF that, AE, on/off, lock etc. stuff, but now it's a lot clearer to me. still figuring out though (after years of taking pictures!) what is best for me and the situations i tend to find myself in (AF-AE, together or apart, via shutter or another button, back button focus or not etc.). compared to my x-h1 it is not as confusing on the newer x100v that i recently got because there are actually explanations to many settings shown in the menu which is quite helpful. not as helpful as your videos, though, so please, keep em coming. i do appreciate manuals, but nothing comes close to a knowledgable guy explaining it to you in an entertaining way. ♥
Hi Pal / Chris - I was missing THESE settings, to practice "The Brenizer Methode" - Thx a lot for that, cause NOW i can procceed this Method i automatic Mode with my X-T4 ;-) Greetings from Hamburg Germany
I know you did this video 2 years ago, BUT I just found it. I chose to put my X-H1 in AF-ON with AF-C, and the AF-C switched to "C". I am going to an airshow this weekend, and I THINK I should use WIDE TRACKING to cover AF instead of ZONE. That being the case, do I need to CONSTANTLY hold down my REAR BUTTON FOCUS (AF-ON) without letting up as each jet passes? Why can't I just press it once, let go of the button, and keep making exposures until I re-focus on the next plane? Thank you for your DETAILED EXPLANATIONS!!!😁
For my own needs I prefer to keep the shutter button as AF-ON while in AF-C mode. As the mode is only really used when tracking (potentially fast) moving objects I always find the fewer buttons you need to worry about the better - having everything at your index finger is much handier. Totally agree with the MF/BBF combination however, this is what I use 90% of the time.
Your videos are SO HELPFUL! And so timely! I was out shooting landscapes the day before I watched this video and discovered (after about a dozen shots) that I had inadvertently hit the AF-L button and locked the focus. Fortunately, I caught this pretty quickly, but it could have led to some disappointing results. Your videos have taught me so much about my XT-3, and they are definitely helping me to enjoy the camera and get the most out of it. Thank you!
I become an X-S10 user and am trying to familiar with the operations for my use but the camera setting is bit complicated than other brands. Therefore, your video helps me a lot. One strange concept is "AUTO" position. Even it is auto, the focus setting remains what I used by other position. I believe focus behavior must be also AUTO decided by camera. Another complaint is that the click of ISO(400,500,640,800), Apeture(4.0,4.5,5.0,5.6) and Speed (400,500,640,800) 1/3 EV and no choice to change 1/2EV or 1/3EV respectively. As I normally use M mode+Auto ISO, I have to turn dials much.
I’ve read that by using back button focus while the camera is in manual focus mode, the camera will auto focus with the lens wide open. This provides shallow depth of field for focusing so is more accurate. When you release the shutter, the lens will stop down to the correct exposure while maintaining accurate focus.
Dear Chris, I use the af-on settings only on my afc mode to have 3 modes in 1. (xt3) -afc -afl to af-on -shutter button without focus only in afc So if i want manual focus i don't touch the afl button, if i want afs i push the afl button to focus and i release it so i compose and shot, if i want afc i push and keep the afl button (here works well also face/eye detection and tracking)... 3 in 1 😉 I used the same settings on my nikon d7200 for years. When i give my xt3 to my wife i turn the front lever on afs and the shutter button work also for focus. Hope you understand my bad English 😅
I try to understand your settings :) i don't see how you can use manual focus in this configuration ? if i'm in afc, i can't turn the ring and make focus.. ? :)
@@ewen9133 i don't know where is the issue but if I'm in afc mode and the af command is assigned ONLY to the af-l button i can focus by the lens focus ring 🤷🏻
@@ewen9133 you are right, i try just now my settings and yes i can't adjust manually the focus when i'm in afc mode, i made a mistake sorry 🤷🏻 When i was with nikon it worked i think because the focus ring wasn't electric, Fuji turn off the focus ring sensor when afc is selected.

Thanks for the explanations. It looks so simple but I keep getting confused or forget all the things you said. So I will have to watch over and over again. Do you have videos especially for the x-s10?
Does the AF-ON also take care of locking the exposure? - Essentially I'd like to only use the AF-ON button for focus and exposure lock while holding the button down. Thanks for your very informative videos!
Very nice! If this is your first camera there are a few things that can be useful: Some type of bag or pouch for safe storage and transport Maybe a small cleaning kit with one of those blower things Maybe an additional battery None of these are "really necesary" but can be really convinient.

I actually will also use the vertical battery grip cos I found it 100€ off the original price and I got big hands, non enormous but defenetly big so I would probably need it for better grip. I never thought about the blower thing but you're right, I might get it later, first things are lenses (18-55mm Kit and 85mm f1.8), a tripod and a filter. I'll get a V60 SD. For now that's all, but in the future (since I'm a telephoto guy) I'll also get a XF70-300mm and 56mm f1.4, maybe later I'll also get 16mm f1.4.

What a mess! This is the Achilles heel of the mirrorless systems, especially the Fuji. Thank you for the illustration, Chris.
This is the Chanel I always look for learning how to use my camera. Can you do a video on the best lens for shooting videos?
Great job of explaining the AF possibilities of Fuji cameras.
Love being in manual but having back button focus available at any time
Thank you! I love your videos so much! You taught me so much on my newly purchased XT4 which even the user manual can’t. Your videos saved me so much time to understand the XT4 setting and functions. Looking forward to more videos of yours!
This was an important video. I like having both of my back buttons on either side of the dial set to AE on.
Thanks Pal another great video. Im always confused by these modes and you helped me understand them.
awesome video man. i was getting a little confused myself about all the AF this, AF that, AE, on/off, lock etc. stuff, but now it's a lot clearer to me. still figuring out though (after years of taking pictures!) what is best for me and the situations i tend to find myself in (AF-AE, together or apart, via shutter or another button, back button focus or not etc.).
compared to my x-h1 it is not as confusing on the newer x100v that i recently got because there are actually explanations to many settings shown in the menu which is quite helpful. not as helpful as your videos, though, so please, keep em coming. i do appreciate manuals, but nothing comes close to a knowledgable guy explaining it to you in an entertaining way.
Hi, I just discovered your channel, and you have a new subscriber ! Thank you for your incredible work and contagious enthusiasm !
Thank you!
im soo glad i found ur channel. been watching alot of ur vlogs for tips. i really hope fujifilm are sending u a lot of gear to try.
Brilliant YET AGAIN Chris📸👍
Dear Chris, I use the af-on settings only on my afc mode to have 3 modes in 1. (xt3)
-afc
-afl to af-on
-shutter button without focus only in afc
So if i want manual focus i don't touch the afl button, if i want afs i push the afl button to focus and i release it so i compose and shot, if i want afc i push and keep the afl button (here works well also face/eye detection and tracking)... 3 in 1 😉
I used the same settings on my nikon d7200 for years.
@@mattiazeny3543 thank you for your answer ! ;) it work's in afs for me because of the option af+mf is on, but in afc it don't works for me :(
@@ewen9133 you are right, i try just now my settings and yes i can't adjust manually the focus when i'm in afc mode, i made a mistake sorry 🤷🏻
When i was with nikon it worked i think because the focus ring wasn't electric, Fuji turn off the focus ring sensor when afc is selected.
@@mattiazeny3543 no problem ;) it would be great if we can ! :)
Thank you for making this as simple AF. 😁
Thanks to you and videos like this, I'm finally starting to understand my Fuji. Keep it up, please!
wow in 6 month you reached 50K follower nearly. Great job!!! Don't forget to do a live q&a with your subscribers 🙏
You keep putting out great tips. Your videos are very helpful, especially for someone like me who has recently transitioned from Canon. Thank you for the excellent videos and the hard work that goes into your videos.
Thanks, in just two videos I've learnt so much! Subscribed.
Thanks Alice!! 👍
Great vid, love the fuji focus tips! Are you going to be picking up the new Fuji 70-300mm? Would love to see a video on it
Your video always make to buy Fujiflim t4 camera..
Im live in India
Buen dia, siempre aprendo algo al ver sus videos. Gracias por su dedicación
Thanks for the explanations. It looks so simple but I keep getting confused or forget all the things you said. So I will have to watch over and over again. Do you have videos especially for the x-s10?
My gali! Thank you! I had my camera since 2017. Never knew that
Subscribed. Thank you youtube's algorithm. Learned so much from this video 💙
Chris! Have a great weekend!!! Thanks for the valuable info!!!
Thank you!! You too Carlos!!! 👍
3rd one is fantastic! Thank you as always.
Thanks for another great video. Have a good weekend from the Rock of Gibraltar.
One more setting cleared up! Thank You Chris
I would be interested in a video on the back button focus technique while recording video
Does the AF-ON also take care of locking the exposure? - Essentially I'd like to only use the AF-ON button for focus and exposure lock while holding the button down. Thanks for your very informative videos!
Thank you so much for your videos, they are so useful!! In which situations do you recommend using it AE/AF-LOCK Mode? thanks a lot
Thank you :) I've got a lot to learn from you :) Best regards from GREECE !!!
Awesome! Thank you!
Tomorrow I'll buy my X-T4! Looking forward to try it. Any last minute random suggestions?
Very nice!
If this is your first camera there are a few things that can be useful:
Some type of bag or pouch for safe storage and transport
Maybe a small cleaning kit with one of those blower things
Maybe an additional battery
None of these are "really necesary" but can be really convinient.
@@swisshoumi Thank you for your suggestions!Actually It's almost 3 Months that I'm using an old Nikon but this is my real first camera. I really like Fuji software, look and features. I'll be 18 in 3 days and I'm so excited to get my first camera. Btw I'm getting a raincover, I like shooting rainy scenarios.
awesome videos..im not confuse anymore about this af ae and so forth settings hahaha
I’d love to see a AF-AE settings tutorial specifically for the XT-4 as well. Did you already have one or did I just miss it?
Nevertheless, I really enjoy your channel specifically on all things Fujifilm. I just upgraded my XT-2 to an XT-4 and discovered your channel just recently. Instantly subscribed and bashed the notification bell! Yeah I know I might have been (too) late to the game.
Already learned a ton of useful stuff that I didn’t even know about my XT-2 ! I’d really encourage you to continue this channel just the way it is and I’d consider a donation to do so. Your enthusiasm combined with your knowledge is a game changer for all of us Fujifilm users!
Thank you!!! 🙏
Very good video, thx!) but what about tracking autofocus?
I like AF-C with back button focus. While I hold it down, I can track birds in flight. If I want to refocus quickly from one subject to another, I just press and release on the new subject. Now if only the X-S10 had the big X-T4 battery, ...
Your explanations are always clear to me. So helpful! New sub! 😉
